Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)
Time

Here's what I keep getting when I try to extract the RARs for the 5.1 version (there are only meant to be two parts, yes?) with UnRarX on Mac OS X:

Extracting from /Users/****/Desktop/hairy_hen_70mm_5.1upmix_b_448kbps.part1.rar

Extracting  /Users/****/Desktop/hairy_hen_70mm_5.1upmix_b_448kbps.ac3
hairy_hen_70mm_5.1upmix_b_448kbps.ac3 - CRC failed
Unexpected end of archive

Extracting from /Users/****/Desktop/hairy_hen_70mm_5.1upmix_b_448kbps.part2.rar

Unexpected end of archive
Total errors: 3

I've tried redownloading both parts and just get the same thing.  Any help would be appreciated!

I agree-especially about theatrical stereo mixes for Empire and Jedi. I don't think I've ever heard them. It's nice to finally be able to get away from the 93 mixes.

So which Laserdisc set has these stereo mixes, I am sure I have them( I have all NTSC LD's) but not sure which LD's they are, if you know which ones they are and can post an image of the covers and info I can look into getting them.

I just bumped a post I made last year that has all the audio tracks listed with which laserdisc they appear on in a non-time-compressed form.

For the record, here's what I vote for (audio that would be default is listed first):

Star Wars
- 1977 Stereo
- Hairy_Hen's 70mm 5.1
- 1977 Mono

Empire
- 1980 Stereo
- Hairy_Hen's music-edited 5.1

Jedi
- 1983 Stereo
- Hairy_Hen's music-edited 5.1

Also, as far as subtitles go, I'd recommend checking out this thread - maybe you can use msycamore's script for Star Wars (hopefully he ends up doing one for Jedi as well).  I would never download another Star Wars DVD again if you could get near-theatrical-looking burned-in white subtitles, along with all the theatrical audio tracks!

Info Wanted: ESB/ROTJ Audio Mix questions...
Time

Well, this thread died back in October, but with Hairy_Hen's recreation of the 1977 Star Wars Dolby 6-Track 70mm mix, I felt it might be good to bring this up again.

So, here's what is, for certain, available now:

Star Wars
1977
- 1.0 Mono (Reconstructed Original Audio Available)
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Available from Laserdisc)
- 5.1 Recreation of 4.2 Six-Track (Reconstruction attempt from 1993 and 1977 Stereo Mixes; Original not available)
1985
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Available from Laserdisc)
1993
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Widely Available from GOUT/Laserdisc)
- 5.1 Upmix (Upmix of original 2.0; fairly widely available)

Empire
1993
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Widely Available from GOUT/Laserdisc)
- 5.1 Upmix (Upmix of original 2.0; fairly widely available)

Jedi
1993
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Widely Available from GOUT/Laserdisc)
- 5.1 Upmix (Upmix of original 2.0; fairly widely available)

Now, here's what is NOT widely available, or may not have been captured at all:

Empire
1980
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Available on Laserdisc 1425-84)
- 4.2 Dolby Six-Track (Not available anywhere)
1985
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Available on Laserdisc 1425-85)

Jedi
1983
- 2.0 Stereo (Original Audio Available on Laserdisc 1478-80)
- 4.2 Dolby Six-Track (Not available anywhere)
1985 (?)
- 2.0 Stereo (May Not Exist; if it does, it's on Laserdisc 1478-85)

So, if anyone has access to the above laserdiscs and has the ability to capture the audio and sync it to the GOUT - we would finally be able to have every audio mix readily available, minus (of course) the 70mm 6-track mixes.

It would also be wonderful if all these audio tracks could be uploaded in one place, so you don't have to go hunting to find which track you're looking for.

Editdroid's SW 1977 DVD (Mysterious 720p Anamorphic LD Preservation?) (Released)
Time

So, I just stumbled across this.  From the NFO:

Editdroid's 3rd version of Star Wars, released 2010.

Sourced from the 2006 DVD, with detail enhancement through Photoshop, burned-in subtitles, apparent grain reduction, anamorphic enhacement, as well the original mono mix plus a custom 5.1 mix done through Pro Tools. Color corrected to more closely match the 1993 Laserdisc (greater mid-range detail, less saturation, slight red shift). Full motion menus. Extras are technical description of capture process. ISO for a dual layered DVD. In my opinion, this is currently the best available version of Star Wars.

Anyone seen this?  Thoughts on it?  Is it better than DarkJedi's GOUT restoration?

I'm particularly intrigued by the 5.1 mix done in ProTools.  I worked with creating 5.1 mixes in ProTools this year in my post-production audio class, and there's a LOT you can do with that program ...

I noticed something on re-watching The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone.

WARNING - FLESH AND STONE SPOILERS!!!

.

.

.

.

.

In Flesh and Stone, pay attention to the Doctor when he leaves Amy in the woods with the clerics.

His jacket has been taken by the Angels before he entered the forest.  He has to leave Amy, and tells her he'll be back.  He leaves with River and the Bishop/whatever.  Amy says something like "You always say that."

Then the Doctor returns ... but he's acting completely different, worriedly looks back the way he just left ... and he's wearing his jacket.  He asks her what he told her when she was 7, she says she doesn't remember and asks what it was.  He gets a pained look on his face, kisses her forehead, and says that isn't the point - she has to remember.  Then he leaves.

The next scene is of the Doctor, River, and the Bishop walking toward the flight deck as if the Doctor hadn't paused to talk to Amy a second time at all.  And he doesn't have his jacket.

I think it's because he didn't.  The jacketed Doctor is the Doctor from the finale.  Remember River showing the Doctor how to land the TARDIS silently?  He used this information to talk to Amy without her realizing that he's just shown up from his/her future.

Also, note that in The Eleventh Hour, at the end, 7-year-old Amy looks up and smiles when the TARDIS sound is heard, as if she hears the Doctor returning.  We then see 21-year-old Amy wake up in her bed.  I assumed at the time that 7-year-old Amy was a dream at this point ... but what if she wasn't?  What if the Doctor actually came back to her when she was 7, but, because of the effect of the Cracks, she doesn't remember?

.

.

SPOILERS END.

I think this season is going to turn out to have a much more well-constructed overall story arc than the last four have.  Obviously, this remains to be seen, but based on the fact that I'm so carefully picking it apart in the first five episodes of the season (which would have been impossible in the last four seasons), I feel like it's much more well-planned-out.

It's more that the name "smiler" is just mentioned out of nowhere in the episode, and if you hadn't been keeping up on Doctor Who news/rumors, you wouldn't know what the hell he was talking about.  I know my buddy I watched the episode (only his second) with had no idea who the Smilers were by the end of the episode, just that there were those "creepy fortune-teller thingies everywhere," and there was "something else called Smilers that we never saw."

I guess that explanation about Timmy makes sense, I just didn't feel it gelled with the rest of the episode very well.

The episode was okay, as you said.  It felt like a lot was cut out for time - I mean, when did Amy record the message of herself?  Why was that kid at the beginning sent to the whale for a bad test score?  Or did he figure out about the whale, or what?  Plus the name "smiler" came out of fucking NOWHERE.

On the plus side, I like Smith more every time I see him.  "No bloody HUMAN has anything to say to me today!" sent chills up my spine.  Oh, he can do Angry Doctor very well.

And Amy is already my favorite companion since series 1.

Oh yeah, I didn't mention that in my post.

The theme pretty much just sucks.  It's not the worst, but the 2005 theme was better, and I was never a giant fan of the 2005 theme.

I don't mind the animation, though.  I wish the Time Vortex looked more alien and less like stormclouds, but it's more interesting visually than the last one.
