Yeah, you definitely want to swap out the G rating symbol with PG

Are you mad? Who needs a parental guidance ? Just to make like they decided 30 years ago ? Haha.

For the text I didn't try to make it the same shape than the original, I don't think. Just the same familly... You know, I don't really remember.

Not mad, I just want the covers to be as authentic as possible, and having the correct rating would go a long way toward achieving that aim.

And yeah, I don't really care whether it's justified or not.  It was just a thought.

Which versions of the lines are in Hairy_Hen's mix? (Sorry if that's been asked before).

It's the same as the 1993 mix, minus the sound effects added in '93 (the 1993 mix is a fold-down of the 1977 70mm six-track mix), so, just like the '93 and '77 stereo mixes, it has the more common Beru dub, no "Close the blast doors!", and no tractor beam line.

Basically, the only mixes that are any different than this (in regards to these three specific things, that is) are the 1977 mono (less common Beru dub, yes to "Close the blast doors!", and yes to tractor beam line) and 1985 stereo (more common Beru dub, no "Close the blast doors!", and yes to tractor beam line).

The Blu-Ray player is a PS3, so no, it does not have analog surround outputs.  The receiver has 7.1 analog inputs, though.  Like it makes a difference.  So we're stuck with optical 5.1 audio.

The receiver does have a ProLogic IIx decoder, which will upmix 5.1 audio to 7.1, so the speakers do get used.  It also has DTS Neo-6 for DTS tracks, but that will only upmix to 6.1, meaning the rear center channel is split between the surround back left and surround back right speakers in a 7.1 setup.  Which is exactly what the Philosopher's Stone 6.1 track did when playing as DTS-ES.

As I haven't watched the SEs in a very, very long time, I don't know how it sounds in that version.  But in the 1977 mono mix (my preferred mix), they're clearly different voices, i.e. one stormtrooper says "Close the blast doors!," then a different one says "Open the blast doors!  Open the blast doors!"  The second line ("Open") is a somewhat deeper voice than the first line ("Close").

And Tailguy, I agree about Beru's voice.  The mono mix dub sounds more natural - the other one sounds too obviously dubbed to me.

It was definitely recorded at a different time than the rest of his dialogue.  It sounds slightly different.

But yeah, the tractor beam line is present in the 1977 mono mix, 1985 stereo remix, and all SE mixes.  It is not present in the 1977 stereo mix, 1977 70mm six-track mix, or the 1993 remix (which is what's on the GOUT).

Short answer: None of them.

The only non-SE mix that has "Close the blast doors!" is the 1977 mono mix, which also features Threepio's tractor beam line, but has the alternate Beru dub (the only mix that has this).

The 1977 stereo, 1977 six-track 70mm, and 1993 stereo mixes feature the more common Beru voice, but don't include Threepio's tractor beam line or "Close the blast doors!"

The 1985 remix features Threepio's tractor beam line and the more common Beru voice, but does not feature "Close the blast doors!"

So the only mixes that have all three (more common Beru dub, tractor beam line, and "Close the blast doors!") are the 1997 SE and 2004 SE mixes.

So the best you can do is two out of three.  The tractor beam line is easy, that's present in two mixes (1977 mono and 1985 stereo), but you'll have to chose between the other two.  It depends on what you want more - the more common Beru voice (in which case you want the 1985 remix), or "Close the blast doors!" (in which case you want the 1977 mono mix).

Regardless, you'll get to listen to all of them and decide which you prefer when this set is released!

Yeah, 6.1 has a rear center channel.

It's largely been replaced by 7.1 (surround back left and right channels), as apparently the brain perceives sounds coming directly behind you (as it would in 6.1) in a strange way, so having two channels in the back, but on either side of your head, is a better way to do this.

And before you ask - in 7.1 setups, the regular surround channels aren't meant to be behind you so much as to your sides, and maybe slightly behind you.  I think that's what you're supposed to do for 5.1 as well, but everyone I know with a 5.1 setup puts the surround channels way in the back.

As a sidenote, my roommate has a 7.1 setup, which is awesome and all, but the receiver will not accept audio through HDMI.  Therefore, we have to use digital optical ... which can't carry a 7.1 signal (or lossless surround audio).  Thankfully, DTS-HD MA 6.1 is fed through as DTS-ES 6.1, so I was able to get the full 6.1 experience with Philosopher's Stone (spread across two channels instead of one, of course).

I wanna know who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to make a 7.1 receiver that can't decode HDMI audio...

Hairy_hen - I just watched Philosopher's Stone on Blu-Ray with 6.1 surround, and it was pretty freakin' awesome.  I'm planning on watching one per night until Deathly Hallows Part 1 comes out.

Too bad I only have the other 5 movies in DVD-resolution MKV rips.  They still have the AC3 5.1 audio, though - better than stereo, at least.

Slightly off-topic, but since you mentioned trade paperbacks, I just wanted to throw this out there:

Trade paperbacks are awesome.  I have all 7 Dark Tower books in trade paperback, and they're glorious.  With the full-color illustrations and everything!

Anyway, that is all.  Carry on.

aw crap - I didn't know such editions existed. I have the first 4 in ordinary paperback and the last 3 hard cover - and as far as I was aware ONLY the hard covers had the illustrations.

now I hate you a little bit...

Also, do you have the original first book or the tweaked reprint?

I've got the "Revised and Expanded" edition.  I haven't read the original, unfortunately - I didn't get into The Dark Tower until I was given the "Revised and Expanded" TPB of The Gunslinger for Christmas or a birthday (don't remember which).
