OK, when I watched a trailer for TROS, before I went to see it, I was practically dancing when I saw a scene where Vader is talking to Kylo and calls him Ben before a brief glimpse of what looked like Kylo striking Vader down.

Anybody else see the Vader moment in the trailers?

Uh…nope. Got a link? That sounds like a fan made trailer to me.

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

He gets his ROTJ look at the end for a brief time, though, after siphoning Rey and Ben’s energy. It looks way, way better than ROTS for sure, but it has a similar issue with the neck being too fat, but that’s just down to McDiarmid’s aging/weight compared to his 1982 self.

It’s also much more shrouded in shadow, even more so than ROTJ, which helps.

To add to others’ descriptions of how he looks before that - basically like McDiarmid today (no real prosthetics applied), but with all-white “dead” eyes, white skin, and blue/black lips, as if there’s no bloodflow/oxygen. If he has hair, it’s hidden under the hood. He’s got tubes hooked up to him, somewhat hidden by his hood, that supply a white liquid, and he’s connected to a mechanical “arm” that moves him around. His hands are gnarled with parts of a couple fingers missing.

And the lightning/strobe effects really add to the creepiness, though it might be a bit much for photosensitive people (the theater I went to for my second viewing had photosensitivity/epilepsy warnings posted outside the theater door and one popped up onscreen after the trailers, right before the movie started).

I’m still trying to wrap my brain around Palpatine’s resurrection.

My current theory is Exogol Palpatine is the same one from the prequels. ROTJ was a clone being controlled like a puppet, a la Snoke. This would explain why he’s so decrepit and withered in TROS, and why he still has the face scars after being regenerated. My thinking is that Palpatine cannot simply clone a new body and transfer his soul into it, he can only control them remotely using the Force. This explains why he needs Rey. Eventually his body will grow so old (and possibly withered by excessive dark side energies) that even his life support equipment will no longer sustain him.

What do you think?

I think Dark Empire’s idea was way better then the shit sandwich TROS gave us.

How would you know? You haven’t seen it or TLJ, right?

I can’t stress how strongly I disagree with this.

As has been mentioned, “Who talks first” is the moment that won me over to TFA after going in very apprehensively. I’ll be pretty immediately stacked against any edit that removes it.

Are you trying to say how much you enjoyed the theatrical cut? Why where you in that position of fear or awareness when entering the theater, and one more thing, to what extent does it benefit the character or the significance of the scene in motion. Could you elaborate your answer a little bit more.

I mostly enjoyed the theatrical cut, yes, though I strongly prefer Restructured at this point and am excited to check out Starlight when I get the chance to.

When I sat down to see TFA the first time, I was worried that it would suck for a myriad of reasons. Up until “Who talks first,” I was still apprehensive, but that line sold both Poe’s character and the tone of the movie as a whole to me.

It’s one of the “joke” lines that I honestly don’t understand any logic behind removing. Others (“cute boyfriend”) I’d definitely like to see gone, but this one establishes both Poe’s character and the tone of the movie very effectively.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Yeah, the action of them clamping down is off-screen - we’re inside the Tantive watching Threepio, Artoo, and the soldiers reacting to the sounds of the clamps attaching to the ship.

Clip looks great by the way, Ady! I think maybe Artoo’s red/blue light flashes between colors a bit too quickly but I haven’t compared to the other films to see if I’m mistaken on that.

Yeah, I was wondering, why did you keep that awful jokeful dialog at the opening segment. ¿Does it really work? I see it as a horrible statement to a terrible character. (Poe being the central victim here)

I absolutely, 100% disagree with this comment. There are some folks that are very anti-humor in Star Wars. I am not one of them.

While yes, I believe there are some jokes that run on or just miss the mark (C3PO’s puns in Attack of the Clones come to mind), Poe’s snarky comments to Kylo Ren are lighthearted and “feel” real. They sold me on him being an awesome character from the start.

If it were my fanedit, I wouldn’t get rid of either line. I think they are both a welcoming introduction, especially for folks that aren’t as familiar with Star Wars — keeps things fun and fresh. Puts some life in Star Wars without being too meta or overbearing.

There is no reason why either of Poe’s intro lines should be removed. Just my opinion, of course.

You can’t take that character seriously from that moment on, it is not anti-humor we are talking about it is a mock up performance, looking for the audience attention as you pointed out. If you want to bring a more realistic comparison, you should look at the original set of films, with those late 70’s expressions, where people could really rely on the characters carisma. Now as “real” as that out of tone conversation might seem to you, someone in these circumstances; with the possibility of dying, failing their mission, seeing his fallen comrade right before him, would not react in a comedic way, while at the same time, while he is saying that, you can see he comes off as uncomfortable, and bewildered. This is unrealistic human behaviour, he recieved no pleasure from these comments! If they wanted to imitate a scoundral, scruffy looking, nerf hearder, we’d ought to have seen that out of tone joke follow up with a grind atleast. American movies have relied on this type of mock up scenary for many years now, this is partly because people accept it as it is, and it is boring, unrealistic, and most importantly not funny to the mass mayority of media consuming maniacs.

I can’t stress how strongly I disagree with this.

As has been mentioned, “Who talks first” is the moment that won me over to TFA after going in very apprehensively. I’ll be pretty immediately stacked against any edit that removes it.

That is correct…

My Top 10 that need something done…Re-Edit and Restore

1.An American Werewolf in London*

2.Conan The Barbarian

3.Star Wars (A New Hope)

4.Enter the Dragon

5.Apocalypse Now! (Still pending the Apocalypse)

6.Total Recall uncensored*

7.Dune David Lynch Directors Cut

8.Gladiator Uncensored version

9.Alien Further Extended and Uncensored

10.Stargate Extended and uncensored with completed special effects

*Never had alternate version

I Can dream though… Let’s face it. I’m still not Happy with most of the re-cuts that these films already had and this is the main Reason why it is important to always keep the theatrical versions. you always have that to go back to.

Star Wars stands out as a totally different beast to these films though.

Highlander would be 11th but it’s no biggie over the rest of these.

Raiders of the Lost Ark would be 12th but again it’s done well but it’s a tease on some deleted scenes.

13th Would be Jaws for the Alex Kitner Death Censorship amongst music cues removed and stuff.

Essentially when a alternate cut and deleted scenes surface or you know about what is missing you can get a syndrome about it some what, and It can be hard to shake off… But only on films of huge magnitude with amazing artistic merit.

Just as an aside. I am looking forward to Villeneuve’s Dune next year more than I did with TROS. I know, I’m a heretic.

As a huge fan of both the Dune novels and Villeneuve’s films, you’re not alone.

Isn’t the reason Rey snoops around Kylo’s quarters in the first place because she’s looking for the dagger? If she never ends up needing it, that might not be good to remove.

Yeah, after first viewing I thought “Man, that dagger outline bullshit has to go,” and then during my second viewing I realized this and went “…fuck.”

Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

NeverarGreat said:

Here’s how I might restructure the villain’s plan for the trilogy:

TFA

The crawl establishes that the First Order is intent on killing the last of the Jedi. This is the most important thing for them, though it is unclear why.

The Starkiller is multi-purpose. The interior has been hollowed out through mining to supply the ores necessary for the First Order/Palpatine’s fleet. After this it has been retrofitted as an experimental weapon by ambitious First Order leadership spearheaded by Hux. The fact that it was first used as a forge could be a mystery in TFA or only hinted at, but explained later on.

After Kor Sella is sent to the Senate the base begins charging, and everything from Restructured happens as planned except that the base is destroyed before it can fire like in the original. The Republic is not destroyed.

There are hints as to the true size of the hidden fleet and their provenance, perhaps placed into one of Rey’s visions or in Kylo’s interrogation of Poe.

TLJ

The crawl establishes that Kor Sella’s mission to the Senate has been a success and the Republic is in the process of relocating its fleet to D’Qar to bolster the Resistance forces.

However a Star Destroyer appears before the fleet is fully assembled and wipes out the planet (This uses footage from TROS and TFA). Only a few ships escape to join the Resistance, and these, we later learn, were tracked.

Cut to the island where Rey tries to convince Luke to join the fight. She doesn’t know that the Republic is gone, so doesn’t tell him that the First Order is on the verge of victory. Since Luke isn’t connected to the Force he can’t feel such a loss anyway.

Cut back to the Resistance base and Hux’s forces arrive to cut off their retreat. Cut the jokey attitude of the Resistance characters to match the grave knowledge that the Republic has been destroyed.

The film carries on much as before except that the final scene shows Kylo Ren finding Palpatine and his fleet instead of showing the Broom Boy scene.

TROS (or THE FINAL ORDER)

The crawl states that the First Order is moving quickly to gain control of the galaxy.

The first scene is Palpatine’s message to the galaxy. The full threat of his fleet is revealed.

Our heroes rush to find the Sith artifacts required to locate the Sith planet, etc.

The defeat of the First and Final Orders shows a montage of planets rejoicing, prefaced with Broom Boy relating Luke’s inspirational visage which reignited hope in the galaxy. This is bookended by him walking outside and seeing a First Order Star Destroyer broken and burning in the night sky above.

Rey visits the homestead. End Credits.

Oooh, I like it!

So, Ash, it sounds like you’re essentially saying this is a “Good-bad” movie, one enjoyable for being balls-to-the-wall bad.

I never said I thought it was bad. It’s not so bad it’s good. It’s good. It just didn’t try to please everyone or make any bold statements - it took the first 8 films into account and said “How can we wrap this up in a way that we can just have fun with?” And I had fun with it too.

What say you to the idea that trying to hold 9 alongside 7 and 8 makes them make no sense? In other words, must one divest themselves of investment in this particular story to then be able to enjoy the ‘fuck it’ approach?

I don’t see how 9 makes 7 and 8 any more nonsensical then they already were on their own.

Sorry you didn’t like it, man. I really wish you did, because I had a blast with it, especially the second time watching it, when I wasn’t watching it with a skeptical eye anymore. Hopefully one day you’ll be able to make your peace with it as I eventually could with TPM and ROTS…or maybe your hatred for it will continue to burn as mine does for AOTC. Best case scenario I guess is that someone eventually makes a fan edit that allows you to tolerate it the way I can with your TAS v5.

All I’ll say is that I just enjoyed the movie, and I really don’t have much desire to defend why I did over and over again like I did for months with TLJ, so I’m going to bow out of this discussion for good now.

They sat down to make this movie, talked about how everyone hated different aspects of each of the last two, and then said, “You know what? Fuck it.”

And the “fuck it” that they made was incredibly entertaining and I had a ton of fun watching it.

This isn’t the Episode IX that I would have made, and the ST as a whole is not the ST that I would have made. But I’ve enjoyed all three films to varying degrees for different reasons. This is the only one where it didn’t feel like they were trying too hard to either Please Everyone (TFA) or to Do Something Super Serious and Controversial but Also Silly at the Same Time (TLJ). They were just having fun and inviting the fans to join in on the fun.

I really wish we’d have gotten an entirely different approach for the ST from the start rather than competing visions and then a “fuck it” finale, but I liked each of the competing visions for different reasons and the “fuck it” finale had me grinning the whole time and when it did take some risks, I liked the risks it took (even if the one big one I really liked seems to be a thing no one else interpreted the way I did).

Jannah was a love interest for Lando.

Also, we need to give Rey’s father a third eye.

No, Jannah is Lando’s daughter that was kidnapped as a child, which is why he stayed behind on whatever the desert party planet was called.

The parts that actually make this clear were cut out of the movie, but that last bit was left in for some godforsaken reason (much like the parts with Finn wanting to tell Rey something that he never ends up saying, which was apparently supposed to be that he’s Force sensitive).

I saw the movie again today and decided I don’t know if I actually want a fan edit of it because I pretty solidly enjoy it all the way through, but I would very much like to see an extended cut that restores some of the cut subplots (especially Kylo learning about Palpatine on his own on Mustafar in the opening scene instead of putting that in the crawl and making the opening scene pretty much pointless).
