STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>

So which version has 3PO's dialog and which does not? Growing up I mostly watched the version in the original vhs box set:

Did this have it? If not I'm unsure why it's so familiar to me. And if it does have it, what version did all of you who aren't familiar with it watch?

Before I got the set I used to rent an older copy that had different cover art. Maybe that's it?

EDIT: thanks Ash!

Yep, that set uses the 1985 mix, so yes, it has the tractor beam line.  That's the set I grew up with, as well - I even made DVD covers in that style (though I've since lost them, and no one else seems to have them, sadly).

I've been considering doing a mild edit of 2010 that brings it a bit more in line with 2001 - that is, get rid of any sound in space, slow down the pacing a little bit, maybe remove some of the political bullshit (which wasn't in the novel, IIRC), and get rid of a lot of shots that just scream "EIGHTIES!"

And I still don't like 3PO's recorded dialog about the power loss at one of the terminals blah blah. Still doesnt sound right mix-wise

I grew up hearing that line all the time, but I can't remember where. May have had to do with the version that the local TV stations played. I was more surprised the first time I didn't hear it.

Same here. I do agree that the mix sounds different than the rest of the dialog, but I think it's ok. Guess maybe because I'm used to it.

It's in the 1985 audio mix, so most stereo home video releases between 1985 and 1993 had the tractor beam line intact.

I also think it's mixed better in the mono mix than the 1985 stereo or SE mixes, but I'm not sure about this.

Question about Star Wars Languages
Time

Yeah, none of the languages in the Star Wars movies are full-on languages, like Elvish, Na'vi, or (apparently) Klingon.

There are some words that seem to mean something, though.  For instance, the prequels make it pretty clear that poodoo is Huttese for "shit."  Interestingly, in ROTJ, it's translated as "fodder," but I think it's funny to imagine that Jabba really calls Han a piece of Bantha shit.

Aurebesh, and other Star Wars alphabets, on the other hand, definitely are fully-fledged, in that each symbol is a substitute for a real Roman letter.  This isn't the case in the original trilogy so much (the text on the screens in Return of the Jedi are simply gibberish, I've tried transliterating them to Roman text before), but in the example you've given about the tractor beam letters, it transliterates directly back into the English seen in the original version.

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

Problem there is ROTJ becomes very difficult.  It's easier to get that kind of an outline from the 1995 logo than the 1983 one.

Don't forget that the actual "Star Wars" logo used in 1977 wasn't the same as the logo used on all the posters and print ads and such.  So why would the receding logos for Empire and Jedi be any different?

As everyone probably guesses, being that those mock-ups were made by me ...

I'm all for ditching the episode numbers, and doing all the crawls like the '77 one, with the "STAR WARS" logo replaced with each movie's title.

It makes it much easier for me to ignore the prequels, and I just like the look of the '77 crawl more than the others.

I'm not, however, sold on the different colors thing.  But it's true that the Empire script has the crawl in blue, over the backdrop of Hoth - I'd say that's worth a mockup...

Toy Story 3 *Spoilers* may follow:

I didn't cry.  There were two parts I found touching.  The "hand holding" and the box at the end.

I know I'm a cold hearted, senile old man... but when was I supposed to cry.  I mean, when did everyone else cry?  My wife was a little weepy at the end (the box) but why was that so sad?  She said it was sad because Andy was growing up.

First, I got misty-eyed during the "hand holding" scene, but I full-on bawled at the final scene (the "box" scene).  Here's why.

I feel like I was the perfect age for each of the Toy Story movies when they came out.  I was 6 years old when Toy Story came out, and I loved it.  I was 10 when Toy Story 2 came out, and I loved it.  And I was 21 when Toy Story 3 came out, having left for college 3 years prior.

Basically, I cried because I grew up with Andy, and seeing him going off to college, giving away the things he'd loved when he was a child and preparing to become an adult ... well, that resonated with me.  Hard.  It reminded me of everything I left behind when I left for college, and made me realize how much I miss being a little kid.

That's it in a nutshell for me.  It made me cry because not only will I never be a kid again, but even a fictional child I've related to all my life had to grow up, too, and he'll never be a kid again, either.

Shields?
Time

No, I don't think shields ever show up visually in a Star Wars film (with the possible exception of the prequels).  Even the Death Star II's Endor shield isn't shown visually, with the exception of in the hologram during the Rebel briefing.

But the Falcon, X-wings, and Star Destroyers all definitely have shields, with evidence from the films to back that up.

Off Topic Discussion About Adywan's Revisited Projects

Um, did you mean to send a private message to Ady?  This looks like a PM to me.

If you did not, in fact, post a PM to the Off Topic forum by mistake, and you actually meant for this to be a forum post ... why?

Since you didn't seem to get it the first time, I'm quoting myself, AND adding this:

This type of topic is not acceptable.  It is the type of thing that PRIVATE MESSAGES are there for.  Please PM Adywan instead of making a wholly unnecessary thread that he probably won't respond to on principle next time.

Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?
Time

I feel that, to answer this question, a range of sorts would be a better way to answer.  These are ordered by the frequency I choose each version - #1 is most often, #2 is less, so on and so forth.

Star Wars

  1. Dark Jedi's GOUT V1 restoration, usually with the 1977 mono mix, occasionally with the 1985 stereo mix, and recently with Hairy_Hen's wonderful 1977 70mm 5.1 reconstruction.  (I also cropped out the yellow subtitles in the letterboxing, and made my own SRT subs to replace them.)
  2. Adywan's "Revisited" NTSC DVD-9
  3. EditDroid DVD (if I ever want to see the '81 crawl, that is)
  4. Official widescreen 1997 SE VHS (second set, after they stopped calling it the SE)

The Empire Strikes Back

  1. Adywan's 1980 Theatrical restoration, either with Ady's 5.1 or Hairy_Hen's purist 5.1 mix.
  2. Dark Jedi's GOUT V1 with the 1993 stereo mix.
  3. ABC/Dark Jedi's "Imperial Edition" (isolated score w/black-and-white video)
  4. Adywan's 1997 AVCHD restoration
  5. Official widescreen 1997 SE VHS (second set, after they stopped calling it the SE)

Return of the Jedi

  1. Harmy's 1983 Theatrical restoration, with Hairy_Hen's purist 5.1 mix.
  2. Dark Jedi's GOUT V1 with the 1993 stereo mix
  3. Official widescreen 1997 SE VHS (second set, after they stopped calling it the SE)

The Phantom Menace

  1. Adywan's 1999 Theatrical restoration, with the laserdisc 5.1 mix
  2. Official widescreen 1999 theatrical cut VHS

Any other versions I pretty simply never watch.  I refuse to ever put the 2004 DVDs in, I have no reason to ever put in the official GOUT discs when I have DJ's restorations, I never have any desire to watch Clones or Sith, and I never have any desire to watch the official DVD cut of Phantom.

I really only put the SE VHS tapes on the list to illustrate what I'm willing to watch before any of those things I just mentioned.
