Doctor Who

It was neat, but they were clearly streaming it live. Some framerate stutters, and once or twice in Part 1 (they stitched both parts together with just a title card for Part 2, no recap or opening title sequence) the screen pixelated significantly. I also suspect they were streaming it in 720p, the image wasn’t particularly sharp. This was likely because they had a live Q&A with the cast (minus Graham) after the episodes.

I did the same thing for the Series 6 premiere (but for that one, they did it the day Part 1 premiered, so I had to wait 2 weeks to get new content, but hey, I saw Part 2 a week early!), but that definitely wasn’t live streamed, picture quality was crystal clear all the way through - and it was fucking packed. The show has definitely fallen off in popularity in the US since Smith/Moffat…

Honestly, seeing Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon for the first time in a theater packed with other Whovians who were all also seeing it for the first time was such an incredible experience. This sadly paled in comparison, but it was still cool.

Info: Aspect Ratios of Original Trilogies
Time

You’re buying a projector screen to perfectly fit one movie…? That seems kind of absurd to me, sorry.

Also, not every release of the same movie will have the exact same dimensions due to the nature of how it was scanned and restored. So, for example, the new 4K box set coming out in a few months might be slightly wider than the 2011 Blu-Ray, which might be slightly wider than Despecialized, which might be slightly wider than 4K77… etc. etc.

Not to mention when you pop in another “scope” movie, it won’t be exactly the same dimensions either.

And what about 1.78:1 content? 1.85:1? 2.00:1? 2.76:1? Good old fashioned 1.33:1?

That does happen, but it varies, and often when something is released open matte, effects shots and others are cropped anyway. The original aspect ratio is the way the director and cinematographer designed their images, regardless of whether an open matte version is available, and in my opinion it’s always best to respect the intentions of those who made the movie or show you’re watching.

Is this author referring to the Despecialized Editions, or is he referring to something else?

“But if you want to see high-quality versions of the original Star Wars trilogy as it appeared to audiences in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with some visual effects mistakes from the old versions fixed without anything else being changed, then they are out there.” https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2019/03/disney-acquired-fox-star-wars-meaning.html

That or any number of other similar fan projects.

And to what is this author referring to?

“Unaltered versions of the original trilogy are available — but, because they’re out of production, they’re not available through official channels.” https://www.inverse.com/article/3942-why-finding-the-original-1977-star-wars-verges-on-the-impossible

Same, or any of the out of print official releases (VHS, Laserdisc, 2006 “GOUT” DVD).

Just found this quote from George: “…The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it.” By “other”, he means the original, but what version of the videotape did he mean? https://ew.com/article/2016/02/16/star-wars-restore-1977/

Literally any VHS of the movies released before 1997.

Info Wanted: Is there a way to see the Prequels in their original theatrical version?

I believe the general rule is you need to own an official product that’s the same perceived quality (that is, resolution) as the project you’re downloading, or the highest-quality official product available.

I may be conflating FE’s rules with OT’s on that one, but if the project you’re getting uses the Blu-Ray as a source, you definitely need to own the Blu-Ray.

Why don't people hate the Palpatine re-casting in ESB yet despise Force ghost Anakin's re-casting in RotJ?

Marjorie Eaton with chimp eyes looks like “a guy in a cheap mask”, whilst Ian McDiarmid in cheap ROTS makeup looks “remastered”.

I don’t share that opinion, either.

Both have make up effects applied, the original holds up poorly whereas Ians make up looks a lot more organic and believable. In fact while watching the original version i always felt the emperors face was about to melt off at any stage of the movie.

Well, if you compare Revisited Palpatine to OUT Palpatine, of course the former’s gonna look superior to the latter.

I assumed that was the comparison :p
Unless there is yet another change i haven’t seen.

We’re discussing the 2004 change where George replaced the original ESB Emperor with the horrible RotS monster face Emperor. Not Adywan’s excellent fanedit.

I honestly never noticed the difference, in my mind the emperor was always Ian.

You don’t seem to get what we’re saying - the comparison you posted was 1980 monkeylady Emperor and Adywan’s fan edit alteration of the 2004 Emperor, which is vastly superior to the official 2004 Emperor because he literally cut and pasted images of McDiarmid’s ROTJ makeup on top of it.

THIS is the official 2004 one, which is just McDiarmid in his ROTS makeup and it looks like absolute trash.

I don’t see that I’ve commented on this before.

Ep VII Blu-ray/DVD/Digital
Ep VIII blu-ray/DVD/Digital
Rogue One Blu-ray/DVD/Digital
Solo Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital

And I expect
Ep IX Blu-ray/DVD/Digital
18 disc Blu-ray saga set

why do you buy this 3 times as bluray, dvd and download??
weird…

Weird that you’ve apparently never come across a Blu-Ray bundled with a DVD and a digital download code…they’re extremely common (though including a DVD is becoming significantly less common).

Per forum rules, you must own the official release nearest in quality to the fan project you’re seeking before you can download said fan project.

For example, if you’re trying to download a standard definition DVD release of a fan project, you only need to own the official DVD first. But if you’re trying to download an HD project, you need to own the official Blu-Ray first.

I just saw this film again and one thing stood out to me this time - at least three times in the first half of the film a character says something along the lines of ‘if we fail, it was all for nothing’. It gets rather tiresome, and the final time this happens is with C-3PO before he is mind wiped. I think a far stronger version of the scene would be to simply mute his dialogue, so he would walk away from the group in silence. Poe would ask what he was doing, and only then would he reveal his decision.

I really like this idea.
