Doctor Who
Time

Doctor Who and canon are almost mutually exclusive things at this point. The BBC and the production team have gone out of their way to not codify any sort of canon for ages.

Pretty much anything can be explained by “time travel changed things” anyway.

Besides, at this point there’s so many different versions of Shada (the VHS “reconstruction,” the novelization, the Big Finish webcast with McGann, and now this animation), you can pretty much pick your poison as to which - if any - of them fits in your personal headcanon.

Chewie looks, if possible, even stranger than in TFA. This is the one thing that really bugs me about the whole trailer.

Agreed, though he looks better in TFA and TLJ than he did in ROTS. (ESB>ANH>ROTJ>>TFA>TLJ>>>ROTS as far as Chewie’s appearance goes IMHO.)

It almost looks like they went with some CGI “enhancement” on his face here for some reason, but that might just be my eyes playing tricks on me.

I found it boring and another exercise in loose continuity*.

*First the black oil’s presented as a sapient intelligence that takes possession of human hosts, then it’s a virus that sends people into catatonia, then it’s alien semen. I guess its effects are whatever the hell Carter wants them to be at any given moment.

Bolded that last bit since it’s the most accurate description of The X-Files as a whole I’ve ever seen.

For the record, I think season 8 was the best season of X-Files after Fight the Future. It was a great return to form after the “meh” season 6 and the mostly-abysmal season 7. They should have ended it with 8 and either not introduced the super soldier stuff, or kept 8 as it aired, took a few years off, and done a movie or two to wrap up the super soldier plotline.

Season 9 was hot garbage all the way through, I Want to Believe was aggressively average and handwaved the series finale away in terrible fashion, and the only thing worthwhile about season 10 was the Were-Monster episode.

For a while I pretended the show ended with Mulder’s abduction in the season 7 finale and disregarded season 8 onward because I remembered hating it when it aired, but I rewatched everything in the lead up to season 10, and season 8 turned out to actually be pretty damned good. So as it stands now, season 8 is the ending for me unless season 11 turns out to be absolutely goddamn amazing.

Yeeeaaahhhh…this might be the first season of X-Files since I was 10 that I’m not going to watch live.

It’s okay, I’ve got the eight good seasons (well, seven good seasons plus season 7) and the one good movie on Blu-Ray, and the remaster was good enough overall that I can overlook how they butchered the opening credits sequence and title card fonts, so unless I hear that season 11 turned out amazing, I’m good.

Gotcha. Wasn’t trying to berate you for not having watched foreign films before, mind you, I was just surprised that anyone would pick Solaris as their first foray into foreign films, as it’s not exactly an accessible film even by foreign/arthouse standards!

Oh, and I can’t recommend City of God enough. One of my all-time favorites. It’s about gangs/crime/drugs in the slums of Brazil, all involving kids. It’s intense and hard-hitting, but also surprisingly very funny. Such a good movie.

Solaris (1972)

A truly remarkable, poignant reflection on grief, identity, and humanity; this is an instant favorite for me. Also, my first foray into foreign films.

Wow, Solaris was your first foreign film? I’ve known people who are super into foreign films that couldn’t stand Solaris.

Might I recommend:

  • Pan’s Labyrinth
  • Let the Right One In
  • City of God (2002)
  • Rashomon (or any Kurosawa, but that’s my favorite)
  • The Lives of Others
  • Das Boot
  • Stalker (same director as Solaris)

I wish I never had to sit through any of the Alien sequels/prequels.

Oh come on.

Until visiting this site, I didn’t know that there was a single person on earth that disliked Aliens. I’m still considering the possibility that everyone who claims to dislike Aliens is actually lying.

I like Aliens, it’s quotable, it’s got great action sequences but boy is it overrated, not as overrated as the truly awful T2

WHAT?!?!

T2 is a long drawn out pointless remake of the first film that actively undermines everything the superior first film did. The ending is nonsensical too and the cheesy humour. T2 is, in its own way as bad as any of the other sequels. And like all the other sequels it’s got some good bits in it but I could live without them just to erase it and remember the original film as the only film in the series. I like the Sarah Coral Coracles though.

Everyone I know acts like I’m a weirdo for thinking T1 is a better movie, but damn it, T2 is still 8/10 at least!

Ranking the Batman films

My fondness for Batman '89 lies in the gothic atmosphere and Nicholson’s performance. That’s enough for me to prefer it over Returns, which I would’ve liked more if it weren’t for the absolute worst incarnation of the Penguin I’ve ever seen.

Pretty much this. I’m also not a fan of Catwoman in general and I really wish Billy Dee had come back so we could have gotten Harvey Dent instead of Christopher Walken’s random new character.

But Batman 89 gets Gotham right and Keaton’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne (not Batman) in it is pretty much the definitive Wayne in my mind.

Blade Runner 2049.

This might be hyperbole because I just got home, but holy shit it was perfect. I’m so happy right now.

JEDIT: After napping and thinking about it in my first hour at work, it isn’t quite perfect - there’s an abundance of overly-expository dialogue that isn’t needed which makes it feel less subtle than the original, and Harrison Ford felt too much like Harrison Ford and not enough like Deckard (who is one of the least Ford-y characters he’s played). The excessive exposition is something that can be fixed pretty easily IMO, but I dunno about the Ford factor.

I give it a 9/10, which means it’s pretty much equal to the original in my eyes. No small feat.

Here’s hoping Villeneuve’s Dune happens. After seeing this, I need it in my life.
