Can we stop talking about TLJ in this thread (with the exception of how it impacts this edit)? There are other threads where you can talk about how much you didn’t like the movie. If Hal or Neverar or Ridley wants to do a TLJ edit they will talk about it in the ideas thread and eventually make a new thread when it’s allowed.

Agreed. I was only talking about it in the context of stuff that could possibly be pulled from it for a TFA:R V3, but I tried to keep it spoiler free. Apologies if I crossed that line for any in my posts. I’ll refrain from here on out.

Some unconnected thoughts upon first viewing:

They put Luke’s X-wing underwater so they didn’t have to show it covered in bird shit.

Nice ‘Raiders of the Lost Arc’ moment with the Imperial laundry room.

Yoda looks the worst I’ve ever seen him.

Interesting that the only prequel-specific reference was to the name Darth Sidious. Regards to L8wrtr.

Someone earlier in the thread said they’d like to change Luke’s saber to green at the end. It seems likely that Luke had long since discarded his green saber. Plus, him using Anakin’s saber is a very good hint that he’s not actually there, because we already saw broken in two. (Assuming it will be reforged in 3,000 years’ time.)

I was so certain Leia was going to die in space. Then I was so sure she would simply remain unconscious; the characters were already grappling with how to continue in her absence. I know the story and plot were finished prior to Carrie Fischer’s sudden death, but it still surprised me. Not sure how Ep9 will address this at all.

I found myself in tears, but was a little surprised at when that occurred. For me, it was when Luke and Leia were onscreen together and John Williams’ “Luke and Leia” kicked in.

I’m happy with Rey’s parentage. Good. Less so about Snoke; I’d really have liked to hear who this guy is. Rey as a rando is good, Snoke as a rando is bad.

Why have ‘caretakers’ on Luke’s island? To me, that slightly undermines his solitude. I didn’t mind the porgs so much. Sort of made me want to go to Chik Fil A afterward.

Maz felt totally unnecessary. And WTF is she doing as Finn and company are talking with her?

I think it was a misstep to introduce Rose at all. Just keep Finn around and have him do something without going off on a side adventure.

Can’t put my finger on it, but it seems like having so many characters or things going on made it feel like an overstuffed blockbuster movie. Maybe like all these Marvel movies I don’t care about.

I found Luke perplexing toward the end, and not necessarily in a negative sense. I wonder why Luke died. I also wonder why he suddenly has such conviction that Rey will become a Jedi and that the Jedi will continue. I thought Yoda joined him in agreeing it was time for the Jedi to end.

The novelization doesn’t come out until March?!

I agree about most of this, but Luke’s death angered me more than confused me (though it did also do that). I feel like that’s the one thing they should have changed after Carrie’s death (as in, keep Luke alive).

And I think Yoda looked slightly better than TPM puppet Yoda. Maybe we can convince Ady to work his magic on that scene when the BR comes out…?

I just joined too, and so far I’ve been very welcome. Here, from my understanding, you’re treated the way you treat people. Don’t be an asshole, or rude, or annoying to anyone and you’ll be fine.

I think if you like the movie you will be treated well. But if you don’t like the movie you might get banned. I hope I will like it or else! haha…

You won’t get banned for not liking the movie. You’ll get banned if you’re an asshole and hostile to others, regardless of your opinions. Many longtime members have expressed their dislike for TLJ so far, so you have nothing to worry about as long as you’re not a dick. 😃

Silly question, but does anyone have an opinion on whether I could take my 6-year old to this. He’s not really allowed to view anything violent however I make an exception for Star Wars. I don’t want him to see Tfa as I find Kylo’s murder scenes a little too dark. This didn’t seem nearly as violent. Is it just me?

It’s more violent than TFA in my opinion. For the entire Snoke throne room sequence alone.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

Currently, but I know this will change because TLJ absolutely NEEDS two or more viewings before I can fully digest it:

 1. Empire
 2. Star Wars
 3. Awakens
 4. Rogue One
 5. Last Jedi
 6. Return
 7. Phantom
 8. Sith
 9. Clones

If it weren’t for that one thing I’ve been constantly bitching about since the movie ended last night (see my first post in the review thread, it’s a super spoilery complaint), it’d be above TFA right now. Hopefully it’s a thing I can come to terms with, but I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever be able to.

The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit Ideas thread

One thing that every edit needs to cut out:

Finn’s “Who do you think mopped up on that Star Destroyer?” comment (or whatever it was he said).

I didn’t mind the “sanitation” thing in TFA, since it was implied that he was only in sanitation while stationed at SKB, and he almost certainly had other, more stormtrooper-y posts when he was stationed at other locations.

But TLJ implying that he was also in sanitation on that Star Destroyer implies that a janitor is all he ever was. Which doesn’t sit right with me at all.

Oh, also, regarding my family viewing of TFA:R-V2, everyone loved it. My dad and grandma didn’t notice anything different (not surprising), but seemed to enjoy it more than they have in the past. My brother immediately turned to me when the credits started with a huge grin on his face and said, “Holy shit that was so much better,” which led to my mom going “I knew something was different! Was this one of your cut-ups” (what she calls fanedits) “or is this a new Special Edition?” When I explained to her what was changed she agreed that it was a massive improvement and that she never noticed anything was different at all until Han’s death - the whole Takodana sequence felt “right” and like it had always been that way for her, even though she’s seen the theatrical version about 5 times.

I played off the framerate stuttering during Chewie’s rescue of Rey and Finn as a glitch in the file.

Oh, and I should point out that I haven’t been able to get this to work when burned to a BD50 at all. Anyone successful yet? Did you have to do anything special?

Haven’t read any other posts yet. Just got back from the movie. Still collecting my thoughts, and probably will be for some time.

Overall, what I liked I really liked. What I didn’t like, I didn’t hate, it just felt…off to me. With one exception.

I really, really, really, really, really fucking hated Luke’s death. Not the Kylo “duel,” that was one of my favorite parts of the movie (even though I called Luke not actually being “there” based on both beard color and lightsaber hilt). The way Luke actually died. For no fucking reason. At all.

Not. Fucking. Cool. Rian.

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)
Time

I know I said I’m off the Internet until after I see TLJ, but I just finished watching V2 and I had to comment on it, so now this will be my last post until TLJ!

It’s been a while since I’ve watched TFA, and I haven’t watched Restructured V1 since work began on V2. Holy hell I’d forgotten just how much the restructuring improves the movie, and V2 polishes it to the point where it’s almost indistinguishable from an official theatrical release.

The Maz’s castle sequence is flawless and flows so much better without the tonal dissonance caused by the Starkiller/Hosnian destruction parts. The new VFX shots are seamless, and while Finn’s new line is still the tiniest bit rough, if it had been exactly like that in theaters I wouldn’t have second guessed it at all. Stellar work by Sir Ridley!

The deleted scene is integrated smoothly without damaging the pacing. I agree that it could use one more color pass, and the visual quality does take a mild dip, but it really helps clarify the political situation (helped along by the new crawl, too, which also looks indistinguishable from an officially produced version) - I can’t imagine watching the movie without that scene now.

Same goes for the subtle changes to the Artoo subplot (once again, agree that Threepio SFX are needed there), which I remember being against for this particular edit (though I don’t remember if I ever voiced that opinion). I stand totally corrected when it comes to that. A very subtle, but important difference IMO. I was surprised at how effective I found the recoloring of the firing (now charging) sequence, too.

And of course, the third act has so much more impact now. I thought the repurposed shots during the firing sequence were perfectly integrated, and didn’t notice any awkward slow-motion at all for what it’s worth.

The only critique I have is a technical issue: at least on my media player (watching the 1080p MKV untouched, without the PCM muxed in), the entire sequence of Chewie rescuing Rey and Finn in the Falcon after the lightsaber duel suffers from a choppy/stuttery framerate. Not sure what happened there exactly.

As for the other v2.1/v3 improvements suggested so far, the Kylo hood/mask removal is definitely a good idea, but it’s not immersion-breaking for me. I also do agree that the Republic should be acknowledged in the briefing if that can be done seamlessly.

This (well, the next/final version of this) will absolutely be the closest-to-theatrical version I ever watch again. (Not quite calling it a shelf replacement just yet - Neverar’s Starlight edit still has me very intrigued.)

Stellar work by everybody! 😄 And I get to watch it again tomorrow night with my family - and I’m purposefully going to start it after the fan edit disclaimer just to see if anyone notices it’s different! Muahahahaha…

Also, the PCM file is a WAV larger than 4GB, which I’m honestly not sure how you created as WAV has a 4GB limit.

I converted it to W64 using eac3to, which allows you to mux it into a Blu-Ray folder with tsmuxer. I’m making the disc now so I can’t confirm that it works, but it’s super easy to convert the WAV to W64 for anyone that wants to use the PCM track but can’t get it to work.

Download eac3to and stick it in a folder that has a relatively simple path (mine is D:\Editing\eac3to).

Do the same for the PCM WAV file - it might be a little easier to rename it, too. I renamed it to TFA.wav.

Open up your command prompt and type in the eac3to directory, then the original WAV, then the new .w64, and hit enter and let it run.

For example, here’s what I typed into command prompt:

D:\Editing\eac3to\eac3to.exe D:\TFA.wav D:\TFA.w64

Basically, the syntax is, first point it to eac3to, then point it to the input file, then designate the output file.

Then you should be able to load the PCM into tsmuxer with no issues.

For some reason, mkvtoolnix can’t see the .w64 and won’t open the .WAV, but you can probably mux it in tsmuxer then remux it back into an MKV with mkvtoolnix once the .w64 is part of an m2ts instead of on its own.
