It’s not that I want to know the backstory about Snoke. It’s that Snoke shouldn’t exist in the post-OT Star Wars universe.

The Disney Trilogy is seemingly set in an entirely different universe from the PT and the OT.

We get ZERO recognition that the events of the OT occurred. We have to start realizing that TFA was a full-on J.J. Abrahams Soft Reboot of Star Wars back to the state of A New Hope. It’s like Endor never occurred.

We’re not expecting answers because Lucas and the PT gave us answers. We’re expecting the answers that the ORIGINAL trilogy gave us, such as the Emperor being defeated. When TFA comes out and the Emperor is still alive via Snoke, that’s why we need answers.

First of all saying there’s “zero” recognition is just absurd hyperbole. I’d laugh if this kind of statement wasn’t so popular.

Second, the OT never said that killing the Emperor would end the Sith once and for all (or anything like that). The PT said that. And even the PT never said that ending the Sith once and for all would put an end to the dark side once and for all. That’s a ridiculous notion. The dark side will always be there, and the light will always have to fight back. That’s a powerful and true sentiment, and that’s what the ST is all about.

All of this.

But I think George Lucas wanted to sell toys, and thus needed Storm Troopers and the Empire in the old trilogy.

Seriously, anyone who only complains about Disney marketing apparently is too young to remember the OT marketing.

I’m not talking about marketing that comes naturally out of a movie. But I do think they put the New Order and new Storm Troopers into the story to sell toys vs. it being needed or wanted in the progression of the story past ROTJ.

I mean look at the clone troopers in AOTC. That was there to serve the story i.e. Luke in ANH talking about Obi-Wan fighting in the Clone Wars.

LOL (and I never use LOL). Do you really think the Phase II clone troopers, different color armor paint, and different clone trooper classes in ROTS had nothing to do with marketing and selling toys? That all that was there to “serve the story?”

The problem is that the first part of this new story strongly hints, that Rey’s parentage actually matters and then suddenly this other guy takes over the story and just goes “yeah, we’re not doing any of that”.

I strongly disagree. JJ’s statements about the force show he had the same reveal in mind. Rey’s parents only matter in terms of it matters to Rey. No one in TFA says her parents are important besides her, in fact if anything they say the opposite.

I’m talking about her Force vision, Anakin’s lightsaber calling to her and Ben Kenobi’s voice speaking to her. They have absolutely no idea what this meant when they set this up and it will probably amount to nothing at all. Maybe some clever writer will deal with that in a comic book or something.

The lightsaber represented Luke, the mission to find him, and the force in general. When she touched it she saw Luke’s history (and heard from his mentors) because it was once his saber. It called to her because the journey to find Luke and learn the force called to her.

At the end of the film, Kylo Ren claims ownership of the saber. Yet who grabs it when it’s stuck in the snow? It ties into the whole idea of the force belonging to everyone and not just the Skywalkers.

Cool. Maybe you could be the clever writer who fills in the gaps. 😃 How about that ship leaving Jakku? What should they do about that?

Two options:

  • Ben wasn’t 100% right - they didn’t trade her for drinking money, they traded her for a ship to get off Jakku.
  • She tried to escape from Unkar Plutt aboard that ship, but he caught her before she made it.

Was there a “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” line?

I hate that ‘tradition’ and it was never a ‘tradition’ until the prequels anyway, so fuck it. Good riddance.

Um…it was a tradition that started in ESB* and continued in ROTJ, so…?

*Because it isn’t a tradition until it happens more than once

Could it be more that it was a coincidence at first before becoming an OFFICIALLY MANDATED THING in the prequels? I dunno. I’m honestly just asking.

Oh shit, Gaff! 😄 I was sad when I came back and realized you weren’t around anymore. So happy to see you pop back in!

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

New ranking after seeing TLJ a second time last night:

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars
  3. The Last Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. Rogue One
  6. Return of the Jedi
  7. The Phantom Menace
  8. Revenge of the Sith
  9. Attack of the Clones

It should be noted that TFA and TLJ are extremely close, but the highs of TLJ outweigh TFA for me, for the moment. As I’ve made peace with the one thing that I loathed about TLJ the first time, it’s gone up a couple notches, but in the final estimate it could easily bump back down under TFA. I feel confident in saying I like it more than Rogue One now, though.

Also I was real lucky getting a good seat. I got there 30 minutes early and there already was a huge line inside.

Wait - you didn’t have assigned seats on the ticket?

Where do you live that movie theaters have assigned seating? The Navy Pier IMAX in Chicago is the only one I’ve ever been to with assigned seating…

Why would you want to cut the bit with Kylo’s mask?

Mostly because I thought it made sense thematically for him to lose the mask when he kills his father. (And it’s never shown being recovered from the catwalk.)

I was willing to let that go when I found out he’d have the mask again for TLJ, but then it turned out he only had it…so that he could get rid of it in his first scene.

I understand the thematic purpose behind this, but think the same message is gotten across with Snoke’s dialogue, and I think getting rid of the mask in TLJ altogether won’t be all that much work, and the important dialogue can be preserved.
