Hard Target - Ultimate Cut. (Released)

Hi NickIan

Thanks for the feedback.

My two cents (From a Hard Target/JCVD Fan):

Video/Audio - almost flawless, notieced at the start the Audio was low with the machine gun shots before a small building explodes as her dad is rolling down a hill, I kind of remember that from the original version too though.

I didn't alter the mix in anyway here from the R2 PAL DVD, I think it all depends on the Audio setup you have.

The new video scene (I think) where JCVD and Yancy are in the bar looked great as with the whole movie and every frame looked as good as they could be to me.

This is in both the Theatrical and Unrated cuts released, I toned it down a bit in the audio mix and added a exterior shot from 'No Mercy' mainly to help with cuts as this section is re-arranged to the order of the workprint.

The main differences I remember from my screener copy which I finally viewed last summer are the scene where the police lady, Kasi Lemmons, dies (seemed much more emotional, read that she recieves more wounds and he fires way more back at the killers), then the piano scene cut with the African hunting footage, the Arnold Vosloo character trying to convince Lance Henrickson that they should walk away near the end (more realistic and convincing), and then all the somersaults!!

This version didn't have the more powerful scene of the police ladies attack, the piano scene didn't intercut the animal hunts, hmm, Arnold Vosloo wasn't trying to convince Lance Henrickson like in the screener, but I'm really happy it didn't include all the somersaults!! I only counted three (well timed) ones here instead of the 15 or so from the screener!!

I didn't use any video footage from the 'screener / workprint' only some audio. I tried to create the mood by remixing the audio ect. If I could find some decent HD footage to replicate the 'Animal Hunt' sequence its certainly something I would have done.

Again thanks for your comments.

Info: Hard Boiled and The Killer
Time

Just incase anybody is interested there was a 3rd version of The killer released on VHS in the U.K by Palace Pictures, that contained a few seconds more of the shootout at the end.

Chow slids forward across the floor fireing 2 guns when they exit the church.

You can see it on the HK Trailer and the Tiawanese Print. I think it was included in the Made In Hong Kong VHS release also.

I noticed it missing on the Hong Kong Legends DVD back in the day and thought it was weird only to find it the same over all the DVD releases available.

Hi tnt737373

The Killer is not finished yet. I supplyed an early unfinished version as an mkv to all who had helped with the project as I was/am on a big project for work and will not be working on it for a while.

Recently had a quick look at cleaning up the Hong Kong blu-ray version, as its the highest resolution scan at the proper frame rate available, but boy is it a terrible transfer! I mean real bad. Ive gone back to the German EMS DVD.

In your opinion is the PQ on the German EMS DVD better than the French special edition? Just bought the French OOP TF1 by HK video. It includes the Taiwanese extended cut (with burnt in English subs) which is 7 minutes longer than the US theatrical cut. DVD beaver thinks the theatrical edition of the French release is the most definitive release of The Killer out there. Also wrote that the extra footage on the Taiwanese cut improves upon the final sequence at the church, so I'm interested to see.  (I know there is extra footage where more baddies get gunned down, but not if it's included within this edition.)

I just hope the film reel which contains the extended cut still exists, ha. Criterion reacquired the rights to Le Samourai, how much longer until they buy The Killer again? FortuneStar went under, so who the heck even owns the rights to The Killer now? Ughh. I'm praying for you CSchmidlapp, I need a worthy cut. Thank you again for your continuing efforts.

I think the German EMS is the best print of the film Ive seen, It contains more detail than any of the Blu-Rays! But it has English opening Titles.

The French DVD is great also as the extra features and Tiawanese Print are sweet.

Im praying for Criterion while you pray for me ;) Am trying my best tho.

Just have a question for CShmidlapp, if you're still working on the Killer..

Many releases..Both DVDs and Blu-rays seem to make an edit in the beginning scene where Ah Jong walks through the nightclub and knocks on the door where all the triad members are.

This edit has the music that Sally Yeh is singing continuing right through the door knock sequence.  This really irks me because IMO it kind of ruins the seriousness of the scene and what is about to happen.

On the Criterion DVD edition the music is supposed to cut out right before he knocks on the door and I feel that this is the correct version.   Just wondering if your version is going to make this differentiation.

Edit: torrent seems to be working okay for now.  Will keep seeding!

Hi Chowfattony

PM Sent.

Thanks for your kind words.

I have not finished The Killer but have a pre-release version I sent to all that helped with collecting matrial for the final version.

I have restored the audio the best I can on the DTS - HD track including the opening song edit. There are still some sound fx contained from the terrible Blu-Ray sound mix's, but over all Im happy with it.

It also contains the Criterian Mono in PCM format from the Laserdisc.

Im very busy with work at the moment and have no time to spare on the project. Will update when I can.

Nice fan tweak from CSchmidlapp, using sources from domestic US release, as well as the harder international cut, and the VHS “Sneak Peek” workprint.  The result seemed much closer to Woo’s final stage of Hong Kong output.
Several scenes seemed little more than echoes from Hard Boiled.

One of Van Damme’s better roles, with Lance Henriksen and Arnold Vosloo outstanding as baddies.  Wilford Brimley as Cajun uncle is a classic of imbecile acting.

The edit was top rate.  Smooth, nothing jarring.  Music alterations were well done, also, and seemed to unify the structure better.

Thanks for the feed back Vultural. Glad you enjoyed it.

I was never happy that the DVD offered nothing beyond my Laserdisc copy.  This was great fun.  I'd say send a copy to JCVD to cheer his mood, but I guess not.

I don't think he likes Hard Target much.

Speaking of the workprint,I read somewhere that there are Workprint A (2 hours and 34 seconds) and Workprint B (1 hour, 58 minutes and 55 seconds). Does anyone know the differences?

Here is a good break down of the workprints.

Wow! Great job Commodore!

This edit is absolutely flawless...in fact, the picture looked better than my good old DVD. The editing itself is great, nothing seemed out of place. Better yet, the bike surfing is gone (nice touch) so this is all good. I have never seen the workprint but I don't see how it could be better than this Ultimate Cut; therefore, this is now my definitive version of Hard Target that I will watch again for sure.

Thanks for sharing this with us!

Hi Eric.

Once again thanks for the kind comments.

Check out the workprint if you can tho you will be sad that we did not get this version in the first place.

Its awesome this is peoples definitive version of Hard Target.

Just watched :)

This is the definitive version IMO. I doubt the Blu Ray will even replace this version as my fav!

I love the soundtrack amazing quality lot of effort!

Especially love the building at the start when he jumps inside!

Overall the only issue was the flashback with the shotgun, it fit really well but when he grabs the beam on fire and it isnt there i had second thoughts... Not sure if its because i'm so use to it being there??

Great job with the picture quality and DTS was loud and I felt every punch kick bullet though my sound system!

I so hope we get the Directors Cut one day in blu ray! This will do until then or if we don't its the next best thing

Great job much appreciated!

9.5/10

Thanks for the feedback and Im glad you enjoyed so much.

The shotgun sequence has been mentioned before, wanted to keep as close to the workprint as possible so this had to stay.

The DTS is the way to go, only included the AC3 incase somebody could not decode DTS.

Thanks again nickwpearce.

This might be of interest.

Given the fact how long this has taken to get a Blu-ray release, I was hoping they would finally release the Director's Cut but there's no mention of that.

I wonder which version it is? Got a horrible feeling its going to be the Theatrical Cut and not the unrated one.

Don't think were gonna get a Directors Cut, such a pity. Fingers still crossed.

FYI this apparently includes both R rated and Unrated versions

Great. Hope there a good transfer.
