This particular form of audio preservation isn't without it's pitfalls.  How I decode the encoded stuff especially.  I do not have a problem decoding audio for people to use.  As for the software used for the process, it is a singular creation that had a lot of time and research put in to it to make it come this far.

The anonymity of my partner and all my fellow members is always on the forefront of my concerns so that we are all able to enjoy the spoils of the battle.

My internet connection isn't a viable solution for online transfer useage.  I can however offer being able to send out a particular request already decoded so that one could make a go at a project they feel strongly about.

Are you planning a project for this?

but it is more instructions on where to get the best materials and mux it altogether yourself. Not really a finished disc at the end.

There is discusion in there about how awesome the audio mix was at the cinema compared to the home video releases, with the original R1 discs AC3 track being the best available.

The Cinema DTS track would be perfect.

For Matrix 1, the best source is a torrent someone uploaded in RuTracker in March based off of an old HDTV capture. It therefore has unaltered color timing. It is open matte but could be cropped if necessary. I find when you do that though it comes out to be a bit zoomboxed (missing image on the top, bottom, left, and right).

Got that version and synced the original R1 DVD Dolby 5.1 mix to it.

Might be worth making 2 versions for both the HDTV and bluray versions.

Would be nice if somebody colour corrected the BR to the theatrical colour timings for a complete preservation.

No need to gather, they were found and decoded by myself.  They do need to be spliced together and then be synched up to a video.  The small issue I see is that due to the editing not being a perfect match, usually the audio is being time shifted to match the video.  Since I am not an audio editing expert I cannot tell you how it might affect the quality of those sections but as a whole it's been effective.

Could you send me one? Lets say the Matrix (1) and Ill have a bash at it.

Given the fact how long this has taken to get a Blu-ray release, I was hoping they would finally release the Director's Cut but there's no mention of that.

I wonder which version it is? Got a horrible feeling its going to be the Theatrical Cut and not the unrated one.

Don't think were gonna get a Directors Cut, such a pity. Fingers still crossed.

After battling with Adobe Encore to build a Bluray over the past week I have decided to do a 720p mkv release first.

Story so far.....

I have a 1080p master rendered out of Premiere at a whopping 238GB. It is in the UT 422 Codec which is the best compression on a lossless codec available on the net. Looks good.
I have a uncompressed 5.1 wav rendered of my custom ReMix and the original Mono Laserdisc.

I encoded a .h264 1080p @ 21000 bitrate file. Looked good. Went in to encore o.k. All was fine untill it came to building the finished disc which through various error messages at me that I finally tracked to the video file which according to encore support must not 'exacly' be in Blu-ray spec!
O.K need to re-render it (last encode took 20Hrs)
With me having to do this re-encode I went back to my timeline in  premiere and made a few more tweeks to the edit, toneing down the grain a bit and alittle more colour correction.
Did a variaty of test encodes to try and nail the settings with no luck (tho the quality because of my tweeks looked better). until I used Adobe Media Encoder which worked perfectly.
But when i compared the Adobe Encode to my x264 encode the Adobe one looked poor! Not happy with it.

Went ahead and did a Blu ray Disc build anyway. It worked Menus and all apart from the subtitles which were out of sync and had lost alot of the formating (Italics were gone).
There are other options to import subtitles and maybe a way to patch the final Disc image. If anybody knows anything about this let me know:) Ill continue to research and try various methods but it may take sometime.

So for a 25gig BD image to be finished and uploaded I want it to be perfect really, or at least close. So the battle goes on.

I thought a 8gig 720p encode using x264 with all the audio options would be the best option for now. Ive made it compatable for AVCHD also by encoding the 5.1 to Dolby Digital Plus (640kbps) and keeping the Mono track (Dual mono) PCM (which is what a few wanted anyway).
Compared to the original 1080p master the 720p x264 encode is almost as good. It looses no resolution with it being a upscale anyway.
The Dolby 5.1 remix track sounds good. not quite the same as the DTS-HD encode Ive done but close enough where most people would not notice.

I noticed the lower case "l"/upper case "I" thing when I took a quick look at the sub file. I think the substitution only occurs when the subs are presented in italics and was likely intentional for aesthetic reasons.

This is my fault. I passed on the subs to Matt so he could do a re-translation with a friend of some moments. It was a fresh rip from the R2 DVD by me and the character map in the programme is not the best. Thought Id corrected all of them but missed the italics like Griff said.

Noticed a few in The Killer ive done also.

Any chance of somebody sharing the corrected version?

Thanks for the kind comments. Glad you enjoyed it. Would be interesting what you would think of the Theatrical Cut with you having fresh eyes to it.

Yes didnt slow any down myself. The unrated cut of the film has more / alt angles in the last shootout, like repeat shots from different angles. Alot more like Woo's Hong Kong movies.

The only complaint I have (more like a little peeve) is that a bit more color correction could have been done to avoid overly reddish-skin hues. A slight shift to green would have been nice. The video quality is good though for an SD to HD upconversion.

Strange on my set up it looks alittle to yellow in the skin! will have to try it on a few different set ups.

Sorry for late reply Justicefrog been busy with work and on another project and wanted to give this your post all my attention.

Thanks for your comments, you certainly know the film well and have picked up an alot of changes others ive talked in detail to have not. One of the reasons I did not do a cut list is because I did'nt want people to know what had changed before viewing to see if it gelled.

Yes, I added it from the Back To The Future BD, love this Universal Logo.

2. Binder jumping into the shack before it blows up, from the trailer. This was perfect, and exactly how I had imagined it would look.

3. Different music cues. Did you take these from the original CD soundtrack? Overall, I think I really liked these changes. Completely changes the mood and feeling for their respective sequences. ESPECIALLY Chance's street fight after first meeting Natasha. Keeping it closer to Woo's first cut really adds another dimension of suspense and danger to that scene, instead of it just being another scene where Van Damme sleepwalks through a butt-kicking. The two music variations I'm still back-and-forth on are the additional Creedence songs. I love CCR as much as the next guy, but I still haven't made up my mind if I like the addition or not. It could be because I'm so used to hearing Creedence in every single Vietnam War movie ever made.

Yes took the cues from the OST CD.

I wanted to add more music to help pace the scenes faster in the first half of the film. with them using creedence on the end credits i thought it would tie in nicely and add to the atmosphere. ;)

4. Different plot structure edit. I think you've convinced me to finally realize that Woo's first edit sequence was the best.  Keeping the Mr. Zenan meeting before Chance's dogtag discovery makes a lot more sense, and now I'm scratching my head wondering why the US release changed things around. LOVE the transition between Van Cleef plunging the scissors in the door and Fouchon's piano sequence.

5. Mr. Zenan's hunt. I noticed right away the different sound effect you used for his gun. I like it, but again I'm kind of back-and-forth on it. I understand why you did it, since the gun has a suppressor.  Speaking of sound effects, I probably did myself an injustice listening to this through headphones on my laptop. Hopefully soon I can get this baby on disc so I can listen to it through surround sound.

Took the sound effect from T2, Added it very late on in the edit once I put it in, then took it out. I missed it when I did one of my final watches so returned it.

I recommend wathing it on a Digital Surround Sound kit and use the DTS-HD track.

6. Overall lighting. I think I may have noticed some scenes being a little 'brighter', did you mention before that you had lightened up the night scenes?

I lightened up the whole film quite a lot as the DVD master I was using was to dark. It looked like it had been mastered with the wrong gamma settings. Maybe I went to far!

7. Motorcycle surfing scene. PERFECT. I saw where you had trimmed off just enough of the motorcycle stunt where Chance wasn't balancing himself while standing on the bike. That has ALWAYS bugged me and I'm glad to see that it most likely had bugged you, too :)

Everytime I watched it I would laugh for completly the wrong reasons.

8. Uncle Douvee montage sequence, when he throws Chance the shotgun. I thought this was beautifully done, and mirrors the Woo edit perfectly, but once I saw it I knew that you were going to have to make some kind of change at the end of the movie, resulting in a quick edit when Chance kicks the burning plank in half.  I'm really torn on this.  I like the montage in BOTH sequences, so I really don't know what choice I'll make when it comes time to put my edit together.

Tried both, went with sticking to the workprint. You maybe able to make it work better. Thought about using different shots for both sequences? maybe when/if the Bluray comes out.

9. The final gunbattle. Great as always, I didn't really notice very many changes except for the part when Chance hits Jerome at the top of the stairs. Did you flip another scene with Jerome to get that effect? I'll have to watch again to get a better look. I imagine it was probably tough to get it to look and flow just right so I commend your decision in doing that... I know that in the rough cut you can actually see Jerome getting shot but the quality is just too bad. That would probably be one of the areas I would try to work on cleaning up when I get around to working on an edit.  Incidentally, there are a TON of scenes I'd like to clean up, but am wary of the time it's going to take to do that.

Yes fliped and zoomed in on an earlier shot of Jerome (Did'nt know that was his name.) and fliped the shot of Van Damme at the bottom of the staires plus added a bullet hit to Uncle Douvee from the uncut version.

10. The wipe transition when Fouchon finds dead Van Cleef. This was probably, overall, the one thing that stood out to me that I was unsure of. But you know, I am racking my brain trying to figure out what was originally there in the US version? I think it could work maybe... I don't know, it still sticks out in my mind. Maybe it happens too quickly after Chance aces Van Cleef... which might be why the US version added a short scene of something in between to break it up a little.  And then again it's probably just a preference thing.

 

In the original version it cut to the Uncle Douvee and Natasha "I can not dance..." scene which Id used earlier on like it was positioned in the workprint. As those wipes are used earlier in the film a couple of times and in alot of John Woo films I thought it would work. Tried repeat footage ect but just did not work.

 

My overall thoughts of your edit are that I want to congratulate you on such a fantastic job. Changing the music cues and shifting the plot sequences back to the original cut really do wonders in making it more like Woo's original cut.  I noticed even more now that I like the bad guys in this movie WAY more than the protagonists, LOL, but I just chalk that up to Henriksen chewing up his lines just as he always does.  I also noticed some continuity errors that I'll have to add to my original list that might be able to be fixed in Photoshop (I'll never be able to afford something as grand as Vegas or After Effects so it'll have to be frame by frame for my version unfortunately)

But you have indeed inspired me to keep at it, and revive my efforts at making an edit of this movie, no matter how much or little time I can devote to it. As you can guess I will have a lot of questions along each step of the process, so I'll certainly appreciate any help or advice you can offer.  Thanks again for all the hard work you put into your edit, you did an awesome job and I was super pumped to be able to finally watch it!

Hi all, here is an update on The Killer ive been working on.

VIDEO

Ive used the German E.M.S DVD and the U.K Hong Kong Legends DVD for Open and end credits, done an upconvert to 1080p and converted the frame rate from 25fps to 23.976.
This gave me a 1920x1080p AVI @ 23.976fps compressed using the UT 422 codec at a whopping 238GB
I corrected a few errors with the print in Adobe Premiere and added a layer of film grain over the image to try and help blend in some of the artifects caused by the DVD compression, it also helps cover some of the DNR.

AUDIO

Im working on a custom 5.1 audio mix using the DTS track from the Japanese Blu, it is more in line with the original mono mix and ive removed most of the added sound fx that really annoyed me. Some are still there but they do not bother me.
Other options ive synced are the Criterion Laserdisc Audio, English Dub in 5.1, and 3 Commentary tracks from the Criterion, Fox Lober and HK legends discs.

SUBTITLES


Synced the HK Legends subs to it with a section of the Criterion subs to cover a song that has been changed in the newer mixes, Ive also made some time ajustments and added some additional lines.

The subs I sent you are from the U.K Tartan Asia Extreme DVD release which are the best translation I know of available. I resynced them to the Japanese blu and they seem to work well, is there some problems you know of with the translation or timing?

Im going to attempt a new custom 5.1 mix at some point using all the elements Ive accumulated over the years.

The mei ah 5.1 remaster has a music and sound fx only option if you remove the centre channel. It sounds o.k like the clarity of the english dub. Adding the centre channel makes it phase horrible and on the whole contains some horrible gliches!

Hoping the Japanese blu is better in this regard.

Ive synced up as much of the CD soundtrack as possible to help with the mix but the opening Teahouse Shootout and most of the Hospital Shootout are not contained on the CD, as the tracks listed are ALT mixes or do not exist.

My custom mix will proberbly be a bit removed from the mono mix and be more a remix like you get on some Hong Kong DVD / BLU releases. Still pondering what to do with this tho and if its even worth it. I am somebody who is not bothered by remixes as long as there done well, preferably with the original mix available on the disc. Which on most of John Woos discs is not the case.

Just a heads up on the Hard Boiled / The Killer Ultimates.

Thanks to all who have contributed. Ive met some awesome people on this website through this project and it has been a pleasure.

Still looking for these things for Hard Boiled if anybody can point me in the right direction

A l'épreuve du temps : documentaire avec John Woo, Terence Chang, David Wu et Philip Kwok  From the French DVD's 2nd Disc.

There is also an interview with Tony Leung on the disc.

Looking for the whole of the Disc 2 of the French Release really!

Its a mess I know! Sounds like the Criterion LD version is a different version from the Criterion DVD because after the credits I found the it synced much easier than 40 edits in the first 25mins. This sounds closer to the french DVD that I mentioned earlier on in the forum.

Good luck tho mate. At least we have good english subs that sync good so thats a lot of work removed from a ultimate version.

Just out of interest is the audio mix on the Japanese BD the same as the mei ah remaster DVD?
