Hard Target - Ultimate Cut. (Released)

Just watched the cut over the weekend with my best friend and we both loved it, the editing and pacing of several scenes is definitely better. The differences in the score bring more tension and a serious tone to some of the scenes. This version should be viewed by all fans of Hard Target, I'm surprised I didn't have to pay anything for this.

I will be watching this version from here on out.

Thanks a lot CSchmidlap!

 Cheers James Cobra.

Glad you enjoyed, and thanks for the feedback.

Hope it comes out well.

Was any more progress made on Killer ?

Not at the moment. Had a stretch of work after a few hellish years without so that is my priority.

Having problems with Blu-ray compatibility when doing test renders! So need time to iron this out.

Its a pretty big upload to, 25gig for the main feature and extra feature disc/s. so it maybe sometime before a final version is available.

The coarse grain (that I called 16mm just to remember...) is actually the 35mm downscaled...

I'm aware that the "16mm" grain covers better the DNR, but it seems to me a little bit too coarse... maybe I should try something in the middle.

 I agree. Way to coarse.

Can you double up the 35mm grain plate?

It might help you hit the middle ground, but it depends on what method you are applying it. I use Adobe Premiere / After Effects. From previous posts you seem to use AVISynth or other Free software which I have very limited knowlege of. Especially in overlaying a grain plate.

Out of interest is there any way you can copy detail from on source (MPEG 2 Blu ray) and overlay it on another (UHE Blu) like you colour match scripts?

In my eyes the main problem with the MPEG 2 Blu is the compression artifacts because the way MPEG 2 handles the grain, which is why you are trying the overlay film grain method I suppose.

I showed Hard Target to my GF last week(and she loved it) just before I found this thread. I had no idea there were different cuts out there as its never been a movie I have looked into.

I live in the UK so would it of been the european cut I have seen all these years?

Could you PM me and let me know where I may find your edit as I am really interested?

PMed

Greatings peter_pan, im from the U.K also.

Wow a girlfriend to watch Hard Target with, got a good one there ;)

There have been 2 versions released in the u.k

The US Theatrical Version which was our cinema and Rental (Big Box) VHS version which had a big Uncut Version plastered across the top.

The European Version which was our Retail Version (Big Uncensored Version plastered across the top) and the one used on DVD, all T.V plays and now Blu-Ray.

Unoffically there are 2 more versions in the shape of workprints, there is more details about that previously in the forum.

The first scene I noticed was from the beginning where Binder is shown to be a more competent adversary by tossing the gasoline can at the hunters.  Binder jumping into the house before it explodes was new, too.  Some of the musical cues caught me off guard a bit as well, but I was not at all turned off by them.  Some of the different musical touches added a more dark atmosphere, in my opinion.

Adding a more dark atmosphere was what I intended, the Binder scene's are from the Euro cut apart from the Jump into the house that I inserted from the trailer. It is certainly more John Woo in my opinion.

For me, the most notable differences took place in the Mardi Gras warehouse battle.  A lot of the fights were fleshed out more and allowed to breathe.  Is all of this visible in the European edit of the film?

All but a few minor tweeks, I added a killing of a henchman (Discussed ealier in the thread) using repeat footage and some after effects.

One scene that surprised me was when Fouchon is hitting Chance with the wood plank.  In the U.S. edit, Chance grabs hold of the fiery plank and the camera slowly pans up to his face as flashbacks occur.  Fouchon and Chance have somewhat of a stare-down before the fight continues.  In this cut, Chance just quickly breaks the board and fights on.  I realize this was so because you rearranged the scene, but it was a moment I remembered well from the DVD.  Not sure which way I like better, but that scene stood out the most to me.

Quite a few share your view on this, I do as well. I tried it both ways but kept this.

I have yet to purchase the U.K. Blu-ray, so I can't compare to that one.  I had been hoping a U.S. release would see the light of day soon, but it still remains in limbo.

The German release is the one to grab as It contains both cuts in english. But it maybe region locked.

Have said that, I really enjoyed your edit, CSchmidlapp.  You did a terrific job.  Your edit easily bests the region 1 DVD I own.  I look forward to another viewing in the near future.  Thanks again for making this available.

Cheers, and thanks for taking the time to comment. Hope you enjoy multiple viewings.

Just checking in. I appreciate all of your hard work.

I can also appreciate your plight with the rent. :(

Very excited about the project that is for sure.

 Cheers.

Times are hard at the moment but im doing o.k compared to some.

Will update and finish when I get a chance, its been a long project and really all that it can be is an upconvert of the EMS / HK Legends DVD to 1080p. The rest of the prints I could find are really horrible.

Will be nice to have everything The Killer I could find collected on 2-discs tho.
