It makes no difference which version of the film I or anyone else "prefers".  The original theatrical versions won seven academy awards including editing and special effects. Changing the editing and the special effects while not allowing a decent release of the award-winning versions creates an unprecedented historical artistic void that could and should be rectified.

As precise and perfect as I have ever seen it in writing. It simply cannot be argued with. Found my new signature.

???

That is really not related...

It is a matter of opinion anyway, to some people obviously the EE of TTT is a better film. But the point is, if I want The Two Towers theatrical version on DVD, I got it. If I wanted to spend extra and get the EE, no problem. If I wanted the theatrical of FOTR and ROTK and the EE of TTT, I could do that too. If I wanted the theatrical version of TPM on DVD, people are going to call me names tell me it is George's move and that they are fine with the hacked version and that I should be too. That was the point I was trying to make. Not begin a discussion on the merits of each edition of LOTR.

There are a lot of extended editions out there, but it is rare not to be able to find a theatrical release while the extended version is usually put on a premium two disc set.

Because the pacing of a film when watched in a cinema has to be a bit more ruthless than the pacing of a DVD.  Most films seem to get a few extra bits these days in their DVD releases.  Look at Lord Of The Rings - blimey, The Return Of The King is monstrously long now.  And check out Avatar: two more versions, each longer than the theatrical cut.

Wait, you must have that one disease that makes you defend anything, right? In that case, it isn't your fault and we love you anyway.

The Return of the King isn't monstrously long now... well, it was monstrously long to start with, but not more so now unless you choose the option of purchasing the longer extended edition of the film. The EE was made for extreme fans of the films who want to pay extra to get a bloated experience. The theatricals were still there and the more affordable option too. I really don't know much about the Avatar DVD/BD as I really can't stomach that awful film, but I have noticed there is an extended edition and a standard edition. How can you not see the difference between these instances and TPM were just a few poorly rendered extra scenes have been hacked into it for the one and only DVD release that has ever been made?

So, as I browse the PS3 library for interesting titles, for the first time I realize: If you are a first-person fan, buy a 360. If you are a third-person fan, PS3 all the way.

Killzone 2 and Resistance and Resistance 2 are still the only two games that really interest me.

I looked a little bit at Uncharted, and am not really sure if it is the sort of game I'd get into (I might still need to give it a chance though, but it looks very Tomb Raidery). I looked at Infamous and, while it looks really cool, I know it isn't the sort of game I'd get into.

Tried to give IGN's most recent Top 25 PS3 games list a shot to get ideas... but they kept talking about how certain games brought tears to their eyes, or how other games really moved them. Couldn't really take them seriously. I've never read a more over the top feature with such exaggerated emotion from IGN before, and I read IGN constantly. Not to mention, half the list (the ones that didn't draw tears) were games I already own on the 360.

The difference, overall, is not extreme like the SE of the OT, but the fact that I remember a version of TPM that was better is enough to make me long for it.

I agree with you. TPM, being my favorite prequel (okay, the only prequel I can stand to watch), it kind of annoys me that the better paced theatrical version isn't available. And I definitely agree that it was better. The taxi scene "buggers" up the pacing, as Gaffer mentioned. The podrace sequence feels a lot different, it was already a really long sequence so extending it was a horrible idea. Not to mention, once again we've introduced some serious pacing issues.

George didn't seem to realize that all those scenes that you cut prior to release because they don't "work", still don't work in the living room.

I knew they still had limited compatibility.

C3PX: Wrong since 2009.

On the back of the PS3 box in my living room it says, "Limited backwards compatibility". It is probably just referring to the ability to play PSX games though.

Sony has made so many various models of the PS3 with such a wide variance of hardware and capabilities, it is really hard to keep up with them all. If the list I looked at was a list for the so-called "backwards compatible" PS3s, then it seems that even when they contained the PS2 hardware inside of them the compatibility was pretty limited.

I knew they still had limited compatibility, I just didn't realize it covered so many of the games that it does. The earliest models came with a PS2 chip build into them, which from what I understand, allowed them complete PS2 backwards compatibility. The new models only feature limited backwards compatibility, like the 360 has with Xbox games. Sony has a list of the games that are backwards compatible but it is really short.

As for how do you get a $100 off coupon for anything, it just came in my usual Gamestop Rewards emails. Had a hard time believing it, that is quite a price cut. A few searches on the web seemed to indicate that it was only sent out to Rewards members who had no PS3 game purchases recorded on their accounts.

I actually anticipate that there is a full retail price cut for the PS3s near on the horizon. Either that or Gamestop was just really over stocked on the things and figured they could stand to take a hit on a certain percentage of consoles with the anticipation of recovering it in game sales. It is true, I buy most my games there for the Xbox, and if I decide to keep the PS3, I'll probably buy most my PS3 games there as well.

I was expecting Attack of the Clones to have Jedi fighting a shitload of Mandalorians in Fett-style armour.

Yeah, so was I and just about every other Star Wars fan I knew at the time. But that would have been extremely cool, and the prequels had this thing about trying hard not to be too cool.

The lightsaber fight at the end of The Phantom Menace set the cap for awesome imagery in the PT. For some reason nothing was ever allowed to surpass it (or come even close to it). An army of Mandalorian warriors fighting Jedi would have (okay fine, potentially could have, if done right) made that amazing scene at the end of TPM look completely underwhelming. Instead, nothing ever even came close to it.

I find the ps3 controller frustrating...

Actually, this in one of the reasons I haven't bought a PS3 yet. Every time I try to use my PS2 the controller feels really archaic and uncomfortable. Since the PS3 controller has very few changes from the PS2 version, the idea of playing something like Resistance with the thing makes me cringe.

Hehe, so, just the day after I wrote the above quoted post, Gamestop emailed me a coupon for $100 dollars off (!) a brand new 160 - 320gb Playstation 3. That is quite the price cut. Long story short, I now own a currently unopened PS3. I might keep it, I might Craig's List it; but $100 off was too good of a deal to pass up.

I've really wanted to play Resistance since it first came out, but other than that (along with its sequel and a third installment coming later this year) there are not really any Playstation exclusives that interest me that much. I liked the first two God of War games, so playing the third might be fun but it is something I think I could live without. Metal Gear Solid 4 would also be fun, but I still haven't completed Snake Eater. So none of these are really selling me on keeping it by themselves. And I still really dislike Sony's refusal to change their controller. Kind of lame when the base design of the thing has gone unchanged since the 90s.*

Looked at Sony's backwards compatibility list and was extremely amused to discover that almost every single PS2 game I own is backwards compatible with this model. Also, I hadn't realized that all PS3s are supposed to be backward compatible with all PSOne games. Definitely some major selling points.

Also, I do not own a Blu-ray player, so that is another plus for keeping it...

For those of you who do own PS3s, any exclusives that I am really missing out on by being an Xbox only guy?

*Other than the PS3 triggers, all the other changes have been rip offs done to keep up with the Joneses (Nintendo, mostly), they stole the joy stick idea from other consoles and actually added them in the middle of the first PS1's life along with force feedback vibration which was stolen from the N64 "rumble pack" add on. Kind of an "Oops, we should have done that in the first place. Silly us for not thinking big enough". Obviously every console that has ever been made has taken its controller design from the things that have come before it. That is understandable. But Sony never changes theirs; they keep their same overly simplistic original controller design from the original PS1, and they continually Frankenstein new parts onto it when they draw inspiration from their competitors. The fact that their answer to the Wii was to develop a Wiimote knock-off add-on rather than trying to actually out do or improve on the concept shows how bad Sony has been at thinking outside the box when it comes to their game consoles.

The "mishmash of stuff" is one thing that really stood out to me about Star Wars: Dark Forces IV: Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy. I haven't played the Jedi Outcast campaign since it first came out, and I only vaguely remember the storyline, though I do remember very vividly a lot of the gameplay moments that have really stuck in my head for being completely amazing. I've never played a Star Wars game with a story that really moved me or did anything for me for that matter, and Outcast wasn't an exception.

I think Academy's mission select idea was one of the very few steps that game took in the right direction. Its biggest problem was it came out a very short time after Outcast and had very little of anything new or different to offer.

It felt like an expansion pack that was being sold as a complete game.

"Easy A"

Isn't normally the kind of movie I watch, but I wasn't the one who chose it either. I swear it was in the comedy section on netflix, yet it had far less humor in it than most serious dramas I've seen lately. Maybe it needed a laugh track so I'd know when to laugh. I've always thought laugh tracks were dumb, but while watching this humorless comedy, suddenly the idea of some canned laughter sounded like a really great idea.

Tempted to give it -10,999 balls out of four balls, but since it used a piece of classic literature as a major part of its plot (I am a sucker for that sort of thing) I'll go ahead and be merciful to it and give it a nice even 0 out of 4 balls.

I'm going to bitch about money. Yeah, goddamn motherfuckin' money. The world would be better off tossing the shit in the recycling bin and adopting a gift economy.

I concur.  Trade-based economy.  Or even better, no possession.  Native American style.  Life would be so much better.

Would we really though? Hippies say this shit all the time, hell, even I spent way more time lamenting the ills of materialism than I care to recollect without feeling embarrassed for myself. But if you really stop and think of the implications of that, do you really like that idea that much?

As Rob pointed out, big screen TVs are kind of fun when you can afford them. And I am pretty fond of my car, my music collection, my personal library of books, and my computer. "It is all just baggage" is the usual retort, but so what? What is wrong with baggage? What is wrong with working forty hours a week and being able to eat whatever the hell you want and buy/collect whatever kind of worthless things you are into? Would the alternative of growing crops, hunting, and gathering really be preferable? I think most people who say things like this are talking out of their ass.

And a trade-based economy would be sooooo much better than the current BS we have going (which is BS), there'd be no poverty and everything would be so much better, fair, and more equal... because... well... you know... everyone always has something valuable to trade, and it isn't like one person would ever grow a particular crop (or produce a product or service) that comes out more plentiful and more appealing looking than his neighbor's making him... you know... more wealthy than them...

The fact is that George is a racist and sub-consciously injected his prejudices into Leia's character, which it is why it is ambigous. It is not a statement but a fuzzy reflection.

and we wonder why people this site is a little bonkers...

Because we are so quick to tear into our fellow forum members and call them crazy? Yeah, I can see that.

It was clearly a joke. Wookies don't exist in the real world... so George couldn't really be racist against them.

I do think it is evident that George (who claimed Chewie was inspired by his dog) continued to see Chewie as more of a pet like character than an actual individual equal to the other main characters. Among other things, he did just as much as Han and Luke in the princess' rescue and the destruction of the Death Star, yet no medal.

I would have read it, but the overload of caps and bolded letters hurt my head. It was like a Psycho Dayv post, only longer and way more intense.

However, from what I did read... YES WARB!!! Do it! Abandon your love of the NFL and follow college sports instead. More and more sports fans are doing that, and professional sports deserve to lose as many fans as are willing to venture elsewhere to have their needs fulfilled.

It seems to be mostly a Dungeons & Dragons kind of thing, though I can see them bringing in MMORPG elements. The main character is pretty much Drizzit from the Forgotten Realms book series by RA Salvatore.

I may have made up the MMORPG connection. Like I said I am pretty clueless of the whole genre, but I still find the thing really amusing.
