Do you think the average citizen of the Star Wars galaxy would even be aware of the Force?

Maybe the Millenium Falcom isn't as powerful a ship as the ones in the new movies. When Luke first saw it, he called it a piece of junk. Maybe Han's ship took a little longer to travel than some of the "higher end" models that were around.

Ah, yes, that would make sense. Especially since Han brags about how his ship is ridiculously fast and can out run Imperial Cruisers and make Kessel runs in impossible short times. Han is even surprised when Luke and Obi-Wan say they've never heard of the Millennium Falcon before. And doesn't Lando call it the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy? Also in the EU always talks about it being superlatively fast.

It feels like the Falcon has always been built up to be this insanely fast ship. So I don't think the idea of it being older and slower stands too well. I am pretty sure this is a case of "let's do it this way" then later changing direction and doing it a different way.

Best Jedi?

Ikrit. He played the role of Anakin Solo's mentor and his pet. It is like every small Star Wars fans dream to get a cute bunny-kitten-puppy-squirrel hybrid thingy that also happens to be a wise old Jedi Master dedicated to helping you learn the ways of the Force.

He's like a version of Yoda that has never picked up a lightsaber and he is clearly more badass than Mace Windu.

Also- not in that thread, but I do recall thinking that Tatooine->Alderaan was about 5 minutes, but someone suggested that they could be on the Falcon for days.  It all seems to make more sense to me that way.  Also- I think Zahn writes hyperspace as still taking significant time to travel.  Not compared to realspace, but still not instantaneous.

I've always felt that the trip to Alderaan was the only place in any Star Wars film where they made it feel like space travel took a long time. Han walks out and gives them an arrival time, and the characters waste time playing chess and playing with laser swords. I've always gotten the impression that the trip took them several hours.

However, starting with The Empire Strikes Back, you start to feel getting from one end of the galaxy to the other takes about as much time and effort as getting from one end of a big city to the other. Though once you get to the PT, space travel suddenly feels instantaneous as they zip around from planet to planet. If Star Wars makes space travel feel like an intercontinental flight, and ESB and ROTJ make it feel like traveling around a big city, then the PT makes it feel like an extremely hyper kid on his bicycle bouncing around his neighborhood from one friend's house to the nest.

There weren't a whole lot of games that let you run around with a lightsabre hacking things up back in 1999...

Star Wars: Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight (and the expansion pack, Mysteries of the Sith)

Yeah, I think Jedi Knight and its stand alone expansion, MOTS, are the only 3d games that turned you lose with a lightsaber prior to The Phantom Menace.

I liked both of those, but even with nostalgia factored in, I find them both unplayable today.

Wow, I swear I looked back at that very post and the rest of the thread trying to find that info before I asked. I feel like a little forum newb now. I even made a double posted a bit ago to go along with it.

Frankly, I want to see something like this

That sounds kind of cool. Is much of Star Wars Tales like that?

Back in the 90's there was a one shot Tales from Mos Eisley comic. It was just a small collection short sci-fi stories of random people taking place somewhere in the SW universe. I loved it. I wish I could find more like it. The best part was they weren't even characters we had see or heard of before (unlike the "Tales from..." books that take background characters and give them a story).

I've always been disappointed that was a one off. That storyteller thing reminds me a bit of it and sounds like it might be the kind of stuff I am looking for.

You stick to your 35mm deluxe prints:

You wouldn't happen to be gloating about the OUT not being available in some high quality modern medium, would you?

Because that would be pretty trollish of you, if that is what you were doing.

No---I was reacting to the very trollish response of Dural energizer to my hypothesis that digital has some advantages over 35mm film.

I didn't think his response was in any way trollish, but, ah, that makes sense. Seems obvious now, not sure why I didn't catch onto that on my own.

Of course, film well taken care of lasts a bit better than that, but that is certainly a downside of it.

Also looking forward to Farcry 3 and that's about it, not much else on my radar.

Maybe we can hook up with some Halo 4 - but at least one of us will probably need to be up at 3am. - I'm in GMT +10, you can do the math.

If I do manage to get it at midnight I probably will be up at 3 am..

xhonzi is probably getting really excited or Halo 2 right about now...

It does look fun, and that is all that matters.

Funny you ask if this friend is a Call of Duty every year kind of guy. He's not, but when Modern Warfare 2 came out he was obsessed with it and always telling me how great it was, while I held the position that it looked stupid and had no interest in it. A few months later I met some girl and she got me into it, and after a month of trying to figure the game out and repeatedly getting my ass handed to me all so I could spend time with this gorgeous girl, I kind of got into it. I bought Black Ops on release, really enjoyed it, and burnt many a hour on it. Also got Modern Warfare 3 on release, which this same friend of mine who tried to get me into Modern Warfare 2 refused to play because it is now sold out and lame, apparently.

Farcry 3 does look cool, but I think it is the type of came I wouldn't mind pulling a Xhonzi on.

As for hooking up for Halo 4 after it comes out, absolutely. Time difference shouldn't be a problem for us, I usually work a 7p to 7a shift, so I tend to be up all night on my days off (which are random).

Haha! That Halo 2 Xhonzi joke was great! But I've already played some Reach with him, I think Halo games have traditionally been above his waiting to get dirt cheap rule.

(For the record, I'm only a "casual" Star Wars fan. I couldn't tell you where Chewbacca went to college or anything like that. I might need the "Star Wars 101" answer.)

Kaaasssshyyyyykkk (sp? Can never get that planet name right) University. Graduated with honors with a Useless liberal arts degree. Later he went to Cambridge and got his Ph.D in English Lit.

Agreed on the whole Scientology notion. Aside from Han's comments on the force, Bib Fortuna and Jabba the Hutt scoff at the idea of Luke being a Jedi. I guess that could be taken as, "Wow, a Jedi. Haha, what a kook" or a, "Him? A Jedi? Yeah right!", I've always taken it as the first.

Prior to the prequels I imagined the Jedi as a monastic group of hermit superheroes who sensed trouble and came to the rescue where they were needed, but had a small range of influence in the massive universe. However, it turns out they are pretty much the central law enforcement of the entire galaxy, playing the official role of intergalactic peace keepers for a society that doesn't have any armed forces. Given that, you'd think everyone would know about them and believe they are legit. But that is kind of the role they had in some of the old script drafts too, so it seems that idea was always there.

It has a taste of the original trilogy, but there's way too much pretentious-epic shit flying around that screams prequels.

That was my take on that 1313 clip too. While I was thinking this is great, normal people and not Jedi, they go and do Jedi like stunts like jumping into a massive bottomless pit and grabbing onto a crashing ship in mid air.

I guess this is what it means to be Star Wars these days then, people jumping off edges with no regard for their personal safety. :(

If the first Star Wars film were remade today, Luke and Leia would come to the retracted bridge on the Death Star, shrug for a second, then make a running jump for the level just below the one they are on, land on their feet, and continue running. Han and Chewie would run down the hall into a room full a Stormtroopers, stand there for a second, look at each other, let out a chuckle, roll their eyes around a bit, then proceed to clear the room in a matter of seconds with a stylized mixture of their blasters and hand-to-hand combat, the go on like it was something they do on a daily basis.

CP3S, I can't help but notice you completely left out Republic Commando. That was a good one.

Agreed, even though it was PT crap the game was very enjoyable, better than Jedi Outcast (which wasn't THAT great in the end).

I've never played Republic Commando, or even heard much about it. It came out during a several year period that I didn't play video games and had very little interest in them. Plus it has to do with the PT, so I never doubled back to check it out after picking up a new gaming habit.

Maybe I should check it out. I do have a hard time imagining it being better than Jedi Outcast though. I rather liked Outcast (especially the beginning before you get your force powers back, though they were kind of fun in that game). I even liked Jedi Apprentice, though, which most people don't.

I am really looking forward to Halo 4, which surprises me.

A friend of mine and I have had a back and forth about this lately. He was really pumped for Reach and absolutely loved it when it came out, I wasn't at all enthusiastic about Reach, and after it came out felt it was a total disappointment and a waste of time. Like the video game version of a clipshow episode. It felt like I had played it before, only now it was less exciting, lacked any kind of emotional connection with my generic character, and with a story line not even remotely interesting enough to want to consider trying to follow.

Interestingly, my friend and I have swapped places with the announcement of Halo 4. While I was excited at the news, thought it was great 343 was taking over and Bungie was out, and felt it had been just long enough since we have seen Master Chief to make his return a welcome one; my friend's reaction was to roll his eyes and say, "Wait, who asked for more Halo?"

His arguments are that it will be the exact same game as Halo 3, that 343 will feel the need to make it as much like the others as possible to reassure us that it really is Halo, and that Master Chief's storyline was nicely wrapped up in Halo 3 and should have been left that way. For my part, I kind of think 343 will bring a new feel to the game, and I had always thought the Halo 3 ending felt like a cliff hanger rather than a definitive ending.

Having watched the trailer a couple of days ago, I am still excited and really looking forward to it. Looks like my two release date purchases this year will be Borderlands 2 and Halo 4. Nothing else has struck my interest. And I am even skeptical of Borderlands 2, since I don't have any Xbox Live buddies to play it with anymore, and it isn't the kind of game you play alone.

The rumor is that there's a 3DS redesign in the works. Rumors have especially exploded this year with Nintendo, but that one might be one to take some stock into - because, unlike the other more ludicrous ones, this one has stuck around for some reason. I'd hold off, C3.

That is something I've considered as well.

However, I believe Nintendo has projected that they will just be reaching the point where they are turning a profit this September. I am not sure if that would be the point they'd turn around and prepare to push a redesign out the door or not. In some ways it would make sense.

Either way, just waiting for more colors would be worth it. The only games on it I am really interested in are Ocarina of Time, Snake Eater, and Resident Evil: Revelations. I already own multiple copies of two of those games on other systems, so I've settled on it not really being worth it at this time.

If there was a 3DS XL, I think I'd go out and grab one. Fondled my friend's 3DS today. Pretty slick. He had me play Kid Icarus for a bit, not really impressed at all, but the 3D was kind of neat. He had the original Zelda game on it, so I played that for a bit, controls felt kind of weird with the d-pad being so low and the circle pad didn't feel right for it at all. In comparison to the XL, the screen is really tiny. Even though the 3DS has a bigger screen than my original silver DS, the screen is smaller when playing old NES virtual console games, so it would even be a downgrade in screen size from my old DS, which I use to emulate old Nintendo games on all the time. After messing with his 3DS I went home and played some Zelda on the DSi XL. I think that sold me, it looked really nice on that big screen and the controls felt a lot more comfortable.

Plus it looks like there may be more issues with homebrew and emulation on the 3DS, which is mostly what I use it for. Virtual console is an option, but I've already paid full price for these games once and still have them all, paying $5 - $10 dollars to repurchase them seems silly.

Kind of weird, the man has been on my mind today then I discover this sad new. I have had the song F*ck Me Ray Bradbury stuck in my head all morning, and had a few minute discussion with a friend trying to convince him to read Fahrenheit 451, both prior to hearing this news.

I am pretty bummed. Another one of the few living writers I love gone.

So, I was in Gamestop the other day and impulse purchased a burgundy DSi XL. Gorgeous device, perfect condition, pristine screens and scarcely a light scratch to be found on the top exterior. Ever since the DSi XL came out I have really wanted one, and every time I've seen the burgundy model on demo somewhere, it has made me want to turn around and buy one.

I've been using an old silver original model DS. Probably the absolute ugliest looking device Nintendo has ever released. So an upgrade was long over due, and seeing the price drop, discovering it was in perfect cosmetic condition, and being that it was the burgundy color, I broke down and impulse bought it on the spot.

Never having used a DSi before, getting it home and booting it up I was struck by how archaic the menus seem, and how lousy the DSware store pickings are. Running games on it on those massive screens is extremely pleasant though. And not getting hand cramps using it is nice.

But now I am kind of thinking about taking it back to GS before the return period is up and instead throwing the money at a 3DS. I kind of feel like if I am going to spend nearly $100 on something like this, I might as well put it toward the current model. I've never had that much interest in a 3DS, but there are a couple of games I'd like to play on it, and it still does everything my old DS/new DSi XL can do. Plus it will interact with my friends' 3DSes and it has the modern Nintendo store rather than the poor excuse that was the DSiware.

Tough call, since I've wanted this exact unit since hearing about it, and those huge screens are fantastic.

Ah, I hate when achievement glitches like that happen!

It is kind of funny, when I first got my 360 I really got into the achievement thing, having a goal to accomplish and having the evidence that you did it exist outside of that game was kind of appealing and made accepting the challenges feel more worthwhile.

There was that girl I was dating for a couple of years, the one you splitscreened with 005. She wasn't into the achievement thing at all before she met me, even though she was a lot more into video games than I was. Somehow my achievement obsession wore off on her and we both became pretty hardcore achievement hunters. It was a lot of fun working together and helping each other get multiplayer achievements and cheering each other on as we took turns in the pursuit of single player ones. Looking back at all the time we spent on getting a few silly achievements seems like a really ridiculous waste of time, like Mad Moxxi's Underdome riot to name one notorious one (we've got every achievement for all of Borderlands), but we had a ton of fun doing it... well, it wasn't always fun... sometimes it was very frustrating, but the sense of accomplishment and high fives at the end were worth it.

Anyway, after all of that for some reasons achievements aren't very important to me anymore. Not having someone else as excited about getting them as me to work with kind of kills the whole thing. Since splitting up this girl and I still play together from time to time, but the last few months we've both been too busy for games and living a million miles apart kind of took away from the achievement earning buzz.

Not sure why I just wrote all of that. 005's story of Mrs. 005 not getting credit for beating the game on legendary brought back a lot of memories of how fun that sort of thing can be as a couple. You're pretty lucky, 05, to be married to a woman who will not only play Halo with you, but will play it with you on legendary, and not only play it with you on legendary, but play it with you twice on legendary because she is determined to have all those achievements too. It is pretty rare.
