Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?
Time
This feels like 1998 to me, as I do remember holding off buying a DVD player that year as the DVD/DIVX war was in full swing that year. Finally in June 1998, DIVX folded its tents, I bought a DVD player that summer, and in 1999-2000, the 'A' titles starting coming out in droves on DVD. If all goes well with this decision by Warner Brothers, I will buy a BluRay player this summer, and by Christmas this year, hopefully we get to see a couple of 'A' titles come out that were probably held up cause of the format war. I think a true gauge would be to see an Indy Boxset of all 4 movies released on BluRay in the fall, as that would put Spielberg/Lucas in that camp, and then we can start enjoying movies in 1080i.

Yeah, I think Lucasfilmed has pretty much given up on the Standard DVD market with any future releases, and I believe once the HD Format War is settled, then The SW Saga set will appear. I firmly believe that Lucasfilm has totally botched the DVD set since DVD's inception in 1997, by not pioneering that great technology with a release. If anyone remembers, the excuse back in 1999 as to why SW was not coming out on DVD was because they wanted the market to grow that way they can maximize the dollar when they do release the set. The market grew, but no OT DVD's in 01, 02, 03, and finally I believe they gave into public pressure and put out that half-ass set in '04, and also gave into public pressure into releasing the half-ass OOT set in '06. Now when I say the '04 set was half-ass, I meant in terms of no OOT, and the skimpy amount of bonus material compared to a LOTR DVD that had loads of documentaries.

The HD market will be a chance for Lucasfilm to get things right, cause they dont' have the excuse of working on the PT movies, or waiting for the end of Episode III to put them all out together. The 6 movies are waiting for a 1080i release, with multiple versions, documentaries, deleted scenes, etc, and hopefully they can get it right this time. Will it be in 2008, no way.

I think as long as he keeps talking about SW, the fans will keep getting hyped up waiting for "the next big thing". Mind you, the fans I'm referring to are probably mostly hanging out on TFN, still buying SW toys and other collectibles, and watching the 6 movies in order from 1-6 (typing that was hard, especially since I don't even acknowledge the existence of 1-3). The rest of us have moved on. Yeah, we still watch the original trilogy from time to time, but we're not analyzing every frame and every shot and we're certainly not buying the umpteenth repack of some Anakin Skywalker figure.

If Lucas would just move on, so would everyone else. Maybe once the cash starts to dry up, he will move on to something else, but I'm not holding my breath.

SW will never die from a merchandising end, which I believe is the only reason Lucas keeps the train going with the EU books and TV series. He has learned from his mistake in the 1980's, that even though there is no new movies coming out, there is a market for SW stuff.

I don't care about this stuff, most of the fanbase like us doesn't care, but most of my friends kids got some type of SW toys for Christmas, and look at the way Transformers toys sold to kids this year, do you think it would have been as big if there wasn't a movie to get those kids into it? I honestly don't have a problem with Lucas milking the series for all he can get, cause in the end, supply=demand, and someone out there is still buying this stuff, so you have to concede that there is a market for it. Remember what Mel Brooks said in Spaceballs when he was playing the Yogurt character, "Merchandise, it's all about merchandising!!!!"

I think this is whole problem with SW fandom, we expect something every year even though we shouldn't, and mostly because Lucas never does things right in the first place! So it is sort of a double edge sword to being a fan these days.

I could care less about the EU, the TV shows, the videogames, etc, and if someone enjoys that part of the SW universe, I think its great, I just want a nice DVD set of the originals, and what happens is you wait....wait....wait....until you just get annoyed anymore, yet you can't stop hoping.

If Lucas would have done the DVD Boxset right in 2004 putting the SE and OOT remastered in a nice boxset, most fans would have bought it, enjoyed it forever, and moved on from SW fandom, just like every other movie I love I have in my collection. I bought the Back to the Future Boxset in 2002, it was done right with great bonus stuff, and I have never logged onto any BTTF Forum wondering what is next?

I really wish i could have my computer set where it alerts me with an email when the OOT is properly restored. That way I won't have to care anymore about whats coming out in SW-ville.

Star Wars Holiday Special on ABC's "Nightline"
Time
Can you imagine the internet back in 1978 after the Holiday Special? You think Jar Jar bashing was bad! I remember watching it live around Thanksgiving of that year, as I was about 6 years old at the time, and even I thought it was brutal as a kid, as I still remember Chewbacca's family as we were all laughing at how bad it was. I think Bea Arthur was in it too? WTF?

I would buy this again just watch.....and cringe.....

Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?

It still looks like BluRay is holding the market share during the Christmas season, even though HD-DVD has tried to win the price war. From what I read, the big change could be if Warner Brothers decides to choose one format, and the president of WB was quoted as saying that if they believe that 2 competing formats are stunting the growth of the HD market, they may have to chose.

I believe this could all be settled by Christmas 2008, and that is why I am still holding off from buying anything. I really wanted to buy an HD-DVD and BluRay cause there were alot of good titles sitting there calling my name in 1080i, but I resisted and I am just going to wait for the format war to end. If the HD market is still like this at this time next year.....I don't know what I am going to do.

See I never thought it was a jedi mind trick or Kenobi would have never wanted to get out of there so quickly, as he says they will come back in larger numbers. I think it was some howl that scares them off that he probably learned from living on Tatooine for 20 years. I mean the guys got to wait 20 years for Luke to grow up and has ALOT of spare time, so he learns the force ghost trick and figures out how to scare sandpeople!

If Huckabee gets nominated, the Democrats will win the election in 2008, simply because Huckabee will not be able to bring over independents, cause he will be the religious right candidate if he takes the nomination. He doesn't believe in evolution and that will rally the right wing of the party, but will probably turn off all moderates for pulling for a republican, and independents usually decide elections.

The problem with the democrats and why they always lose is that they put up candidates who try to appeal the looney lefties, like Dukakis, Mondale, and McGovern, and forget about the center. The republicans usually win cause they put a candidate who is appeals to the religious right, but is able to not be perceived as a right winger, and that is tough to do. We can debate what George W. Bush REALLY believes in, but in 2000, he was able to please the rightwing in the primary, and then run as a compassionate conservative to win the election......well win the Electorial College

Politics is all about perception and how you sell yourself, and unfortunately issues usually come in second to how the candidate presents himself.

I really wish for once a credible third party candidate would run and shake up the washington establishment. The problem I have with Republicans/Democrats now is that they are so afraid to touch huge entitlements like Social Security/Medicare, cause that is a huge reason why our budget is in a huge deficit. What happens when a Dem or Rep gets elected, most in their party tow the party line, and nobody thinks indepedently, so you just have the usual partisan bickering, and nothing get done. There are simple measures that could fix Social Security like changing the retirement age to 70-72 for all baby boomers who will start receiving it in 2010, as I know many friends parents/aunts/uncles who are in the workforce in their 70's and DONT want to retire. But neither party is afraid to touch it because they may lose seats in congress.

And for taxes, we don't need them raised, they are high enough in this country! We pay Federal, Gas, State, Local, Property, Fica, Sales, and it all adds up to a heavy burden on every citizen, and if we got more of our money back, we could save or spend to help the economy instead having the govenment finance many of the needless programs.

Right now, I am leaning towards Guiliani, but he doesn 't have a shot unless he gets some social conservative support in the primaries.

Fall to the Dark Side?
Time
Originally posted by: Number20
For me, the whole turn to the dark side bit was ruined by the prequels. In the OT, the Dark Side is like a drug. Once you use it once or twice, your hooked on it and it comsumes you, and controls you. So for me, thats why Vader said things like that he "must obey his master" because he was a slave to the dark side at this point. In ROTJ, the emperor and vader are both pretty sure that all it won't take much to turn Luke dark, with Vader simply telling Luke to 'join us', or make him mad enough to use the dark side once or twice and the emperor wanting Luke to get angry enough to kill Vader. So at this point, it looks like to me that it doesn't take much to make a person dark side.

Now enter the PT. Anakin pretty much is always angry, slaughters a whole tribe of Sandpeople in a blind rage, and cold-bloodedly killing Count Dooku, and he stays light. Throw in the EU with him also using the darkside to defeat Assaj Ventress multiple times, and it seems like it is really hard to actually fall to the dark side. I guess it helped draw out the movie, but I was expecting something more quick, sudden, and not this drawn-out process that it became. I mean, something slower makes sense for something like Smallville, were we are talking about personal choices and personallity, but in Star Wars, the dark side seems to be much more of a controlling force.

This is so true, as I have always contended if you really watch the movie, Anakin never turns to the darkside, he just uses Palps to get info on saving people from dying. He is never stronger, which the darkside does to you as it did Luke when he was kicking Vader's ass in ROTJ, witness the lame battle between Obiwan/Anakin on Mustafar. Think of it, ObiWan gets his ass handed to him twice by Dooku, Anakin beats Dooku in ROTS, and then they pretty much have an even fight all the way on Mustafar, yet Anakin is supposed to be consumed by the darkside?

Zombie has talked about this before, and he can go into greater detail, the reason why the turn makes no sense in ROTS, is cause Lucas changed the whole context after shooting the original turn scene where he is protecting Palpatine instead of just doing for this trick of saving Padme. That is the dirty little secret that the PT gushers don't talk about, all of the stuff that was suppose to be built up from TPM/AOTC on Anakins turn is literally thrown away after Lucas thought the original turn scene was too quick and held no emotional weight.

From the first time I saw the turn scene in the movie theater, I always thought something didn't make sense, and once Zombie exposed Lucas for rewriting/reshooting the turn scene, I realized it wasn't me.

I never had a problem with the setup in TPM/AOTC of how Anakin was going to fall, and I didn't think at first that a dream was a bad idea for his eventual turn. The problem is all ROTS, and how Anakin just leaps to the darkside within seconds, as most people in the theater were like, "That was it?"

He has the dream at the starting of the movie and is looking for answers, then Palps tells him he can save people from dying to lure Anakin to his side. That was a pretty good setup in the first half hour. Then the whole thing falls apart when Anakin doesn't even question him about this trick, let alone this is the guy who has been lying to the galaxy for the past 10 years! Then he turns within seconds after killing Mace, and doesn't even question why he is killing kids 5 minutes later? It didn't make Anakin naive, it made him just come off as stupid, and in a movie, the viewer has to put himself in that persons shoes and say, "What would I do in that situation?" I know I would atleast ask Palpatine, "How does one accomplish this trick?" The ROTS Novel does a much better job of handling Anakins turn, as it is much longer then what is shown in the movie, and he does question Yoda, himself, and even Palpatine, but as usual in the PT, it wasn't the story that bothered me, it was the execution, and the turn is the key to the whole PT, and I was a huge defender of the PT after TPM/AOTC cause I thought they were setting things up great, and then once I saw ROTS and laughed at the whole turn scene, the whole trilogy fell apart for me.

Remember Vader says to Luke in ROTJ, "You don't know the power of the darkside, I must obey my master!" I always thought that meant something big in the grand sceme of the PT as maybe Palps electrocuted Vader when he disobeyed him, but again it is another great line from the OT that means nothing in the PT. Vader didn't obey his master because of the darkside, he just used him to learn the trick of saving his wife, and then after his wife dies, why would he still obey him?

I honestly think that all of us will have to wait for atleast 2009 for anything SW related on DVD/BluRay/HD-DVD, cause I believe next year will be dedicated to Indiana Jones, with the movie in the summer, the DVD release next fall along with a new boxset.

Hopefully BluRay/HD-DVD format war will be over by next Christmas so maybe in 2009 the 'A' titles like SW and LOTR can start coming out and that is our best chance of the OOT in the right quality. Think of it this way guys, the OT didn't come out on DVD on the 25th Anniversary in 2002, why do you guys think they would take advantage of the 30th? Lets all put aside logic when it comes to Lucasfilm anymore.

If I recall correctly, he stated that he made the Ewok movies to appeal to his kids. This makes sense since he was already divorced by that point. And don't forget that the only reason we got to see the conclusion of the Clone Wars cartoons was that his son wanted to know what happened. And consider all the cameos his kids had in the PT.

I have always contended this played a huge role in the tone of the movies. Not necessarily his kids had an effect on what he was doing, but having kids changes anyone when they become a parent. Just think of it this way: Who would you want to make a cool scifi movie? A 50 year old guy with 3 kids who are all young and about to become teenagers, or a 25-30 year old single guy who just wants to make a movie to please himself? We got that 50 year old guy in the PT, and that 30 year old guy in the OT.

If so, would this have a subconscious effect on the viewer by making them feel more/less intimate with the on-screen characters?

There are definitely more landing platform shots in the PT, and I not saying this in a joking way. Just watch the PT movies again, Lucas puts a ship on a landing platform in almost every scene, compared with the OT where the viewer kinda gets that they land on the planet, and doesn't need to be shown EVERY time! The only time Lucas uses landing platforms in the OT, minus the SE additions, is when there is something that will affect the plot. Luke crashing his x-wing into dagobah, which then results in Yoda lifting it out to show Luke the power of the force. The millenium falcon landing on the deathstar and every Stormtrooper plus Darth Vader surround it and you wonder, "How are they going to get out of this one?" Then fastforward to ROTJ and when they land on Endor, you never actually see it except them flying into Endor to show the viewer they have arrived, mainly because it doesn't nothing to drive the plot, so there is no need to show them landing. Now think of the PT, Anakin/Padme in AOTC land on a platform on Tatooine, The crew land on a platform on Coruscant in TPM, ObiWans lands on a platform on the planet he fought Grevious in ROTS. Why does Lucas show us this? Cause it looks cool!!!

I had no idea about where they were going, who was winning, etc. It was just a confusing blur of CGI and sound effects and there was absolutely no suspense in the editing. The same goes for the end battle in TPM, and the opening scene in AOTC (or was that ROTS? ).

But the battle scenes in the OT totally sucked me in. I felt like I was IN the movies. I'll never forget when I saw ROTJ for the first time on opening day, how everyone in the audience ducked when the speederbikes had that near-miss with the fallen tree trunk.

I agree that the OT space battles were light years better then the PT space battles, but in the end doesn't it come down to the characters, and that has always been my contention as to the PT's biggest flaw.

Think of the podrace and little Anakin, does anyone really care if he wins or not? Did anyone of us really gravitate to that character? And this has nothing to do with whether we wanted Anakin to be 10 or 20 in TPM, the character, or the characters in general in the PT really don't lend the audience any chance of caring about them.

Does anyone of us really care what happened to Padme/Anakin when they are in the Geonosis arena in AOTC? Think of the OT when Han & Leia are flying through the asteroid field, or Luke going down the trench to blow up the death star, or even Luke/Leia on the speeder bikes in ROTJ on Endor. Sure those scenes were well done, but when you watch a movie, you can't just watch it cause of the plot and cause it is 3 more SW movies of how everyone got to Episode IV, there has to be some connection with the characters.

Characters, Characters, Characters, that is the biggest flaw of the PT.

None of his friends understood, the studio criticized it, the cast and crew didn't believe in it. But Lucas pretty much said, "Screw all of you guys, I'm doing what I want," and we ended up with a great movie. So he did the same thing on the prequels... and it didn't quite work out. The question is: when do you accept other people's opinions and when do you simply charge ahead? It can be pretty difficult to figure out that line. At least, I think it is.

I will agree with you guys that Lucas does not listen to people anymore, or he has become more autonomous since the success of SW.

I guess I am going to defend Ol'Georgie for a second, and TPM IS what he wanted, and that movie is pretty much crap to me. He wanted Jar Jar to be this clumsy sidekick cause he thought kids would gravitate to him. He wanted Anakin to be 10 years old, cause he wanted a character arc of Darth Vader to be from a good kid to a guy who is burned up, broken and dies in front of his son. He wanted a huge amount of CG that he couldn't use in the OT.

Then look at AOTC, he uses Boba Fett/Jango Fett to appease the crowd that has loved him since 1980. He toned down Jar Jar to next to nothing in that movie because he heard the cries that this guy is ANNNNOYYYYING!!!! Remember the first reviews of AOTC, "It not a great movie, but it is sure as hell better then TPM!"

Then look at ROTS, he heard cries from the fans that the romance is nauseating, so there are only a few scenes with Padme/Anakin that make you want to vomit. He throws Chewbacca in there to appease the OT crowd who wanted the Wookie planet in ROTJ. He makes it more adult and PG-13 for the first time by having Anakin slaughter children and burning up in front of ObiWan.

Lucas did listen to people and the fans during the PT, and it still went all wrong, as I think you can't expect him to listen to EVERY criticism, because he is an artist. The PT is average or bad simply because it is an exhausted movie series that doesn't have the great characters from the first trilogy, so right you dont' have that magic of Luke, Leia, and Han to grab the viewer in the movie. You then have a 50 year old guy with 3 kids from the age range of 5-14 who Lucas definitely wants to appeal to, compared to a renegade guy in the 70's who just wanted to make a cool frickin movie for himself.

Lucas changed and that is just a fact of life, as the PT was never going to be what fans like us wanted it to be, and I am guilty of thinking it could have been great too. Sure it could have been better, but the magic was slowly dying in ROTJ in 1983, and once a movie series loses that magic, all it becomes it just a retread of living off what made it great. You can say what you want about Lucas, but I think he did what he did, tried to appease this fanbase and that fanbase, and in the end, it was impossible and should have never been attempted. But hindsight is 20/20.

Tiptup, the difference between us and people like George Lucas, Spielberg is they have a huge amount of talent for their craft, and that is a double edge sword. When they use that talent, and work their hardest, they come up with movies like Jaws and Star Wars. The problem for many people in their field (sports, entertainment, music, etc) when they hit the jackpot, they lose alot of the drive that got them there in the first place.

Is it a coincidence that most directors greatest work is in their first 10 years? It is just like many actors when they finally win that Oscar, their careers are usually never the same. Look at Robert Deniro, he won for Raging Bull and Godfather II in 74 and 80, and he hasn't even been nominated for an oscar since Awakenings. He just doesn't take those demanding roles anymore that forces him to gain 60 lbs like he did with Raging Bull, and that is because he hit the mountain top and now he is just taking lightweight roles that are fun to continue his career now in his 50's/60's. Is Deniro still the great actor of our generation? Of course he is, but he lost that edge and you just won't see him in that hugely dramatic role anymore.

The same happened to Lucas, he just skated by for 3 movies saying, "good enough is good enough." but you can't honestly say he had the same passion for the PT that he did with SW in 1977, and that goes a long way to making a great movie.

Just look at Tarantino and all his movies, the guy LOVES making movies, and has never lost that edge, that is why he doesn't put out any crap movies.
