...and WE get the bad rap!!!!!
Time

Whenever someone gives me the Lucas orginal vision BS, I always cite this example:

1980 ESB Version (Theater):  Luke does not scream when he falls in Cloud City.

1997 ESB Version (Special Edition):  Luke DOES scream when he falls in Cloud City.

2004 ESB Version (DVD):  Luke does not scream when he falls in Cloud City.

This is called TAMPERING, and not having any vision at all!

Do these guys all read from the same script now? It's starting to sound like a mantra...

The PT gushers at TFN used to spew the same shit everyday when I used to post there a few years back.  Its all a bunch of baloney as they are just trying to make the movies seem more beloved if a section of the fanbase keep gushing about them.

The irony is I talked to many of these gushers off the record (Private Messages) and many of them admitted to me that the PT wasn't as good as they talk about on the internet.  But they were pissed the Bashers seemed to take over the SW boards, so they felt they had to defend Lucas on EVERYTHING.  That is why many of their arguments dont make any sense, because they just defend Lucas blindly.

In all seriousness, though, I do generally find your attitude in threads to be a bit snide, and while I haven't directly conversed with you often, the few times I have you never really came across as anything other than unpleasant.  So I probably am quicker to assume you're copping an attitude than with other members of this forum, even if that's not the case.  If I did indeed misinterpret the intention of your response earlier, then I do apologize.

Gaffer, he currently posts on TFN, so I think thats all you need to know about his attitude towards us.

And who is to say nobody challenged Lucas ideas even in the PT? Maybe not at the scale of Gary Kurtz, but I believe he was open to suggestions.

TPM Documentary is very insightful towards this issue, as it is very candid.  If you watch the process of TPM, Lucas is surrounded by younger guys who grew up as SW fans, and now finally got a chance to work with him.

If you watch the Doc, you can see they are not going to question Lucas, because he is frickin George Lucas!  I know if I worked on the PT back in 1997 as a 25 year old kid, I would have been intimidated as hell to question Lucas about anything.

The only person who really questions Lucas is Ben Burtt when they all watch the first rough cut of Episode I.  Just watch the reaction of everyone after the movie ends, it is a look of horror.  Ben Burtt sort of challenges Lucas about the ending and whether there is too much going on for the viewer.

As much as I am not a fan of Episode I, this documentary is really good.  Its a shame Lucas didn't do it for Episode II and III, but again I think it was too insightful and too revealing for his taste.

the reasons why episodes 7 8 and 9 will/should be made
Time

I would love if Lucas made 7,8,9 so that would totally contradict the story of 'The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker.'  That would shut up all the PT apologists who believe Lucas had this all planned from the start.

Then to jive with Lucas new story of Episodes 1-9, he would go back and start tampering with the PT, so then you could have these fanbases:

1.  OOT fans

2.  Saga Fans (PT/Original Versions) + OT/Special Editions)

3.  Saga Fans, Part II (PT/Special Editions + OT/Special Editions + ST)

It would make the OOT that much greater, because there would be so many bad sequels and prequels, and special edition changes, the only ones that stand out as great quality would be the original 3 OT movies!

As much as I despise the PT, you should show your kids all the movies and let them decide for themselves.  Trust me, as kids get older, their tastes will change, and quality always wins out.

When I was a kid, I loved Jedi more then Empire, I liked Rocky III more then Rocky I, I liked Temple of Doom more then Raiders.  As I got older, I changed my mind on all of the above movies because quality rules in the end.

Trust me, let your kids enjoy all the movies, and don't shelter them from anything, and let them come to their own conclusions.

Lowry Digital working on original unaltered SW Trilogy?!
Time

I actually believe we will see a remastered OOT sometime in the future.  The fact that Lucas is releasing the Saga AND the PT and OT seperate on BluRay tells me that Lucas has conceded that idea that everyone will be a Saga fan of all 6 movies.

He has preached and preached for the past 10 years that it is one big movie that is supposed to be watched from 1-6, yet he releases the OT seperate from the Saga?  Purely for financial reasons, because they fear that many OT fans WONT buy all 6 movies and just want the OT.

Lucas can get away with this BluRay set by not putting out the OOT because there are a market of OT fans who prefer the OOT, but put up with the SE changes and will buy this set. (I have several friends who prefer the OOT, but will be buying this set.)

Which leads me to believe that Lucas will release the OOT fullly remastered in the next few years, and he can make more $$$$$$$$ that way then include it in this set.

Lucas has repeated a lot of B.S. time and time again. It means nothing. And what does SW being his "baby" have anything to do with Spielberg directing or not? Georgy didn't direct Empire, nor was he even on set for most of it's filming. I don't see how him asking Spielberg to direct Jedi is even remotely far fetched.

I will have to find the quote, but Lucas was asked when they were filming TPM if Spielberg would direct Episode II & III.  Now I am paraphrasing but he said, "Spielberg has alot of great movies:  Jaws, Jurassic Park, ET, etc, but Star Wars is my baby."

Pretty much Lucas is saying that HE is known for Star Wars, and Spielberg has enough great movies to be a part of  ANOTHER great movie series.

Thats why I found the revelation that Spielberg was going to direct Jedi in the 2004 documentary seemed out of nowhere.

How has Star Wars aged with you?
Time

I saw Star Wars as a 5 year old in '77, so I have been there from the start.  Here are some random thoughts that come to mind when I was a kid:

-I always wanted to get as many stormtrooper action figures, so I could re-create when The Emperor enters DSII and they are all lined up like a huge army.

-When SW appeared on HBO in February 1983, it was an event!  Very few people at the time had VCR's, so it took 6 frickin years to see SW on a regular basis!  I probably watched it everytime it was on during that year, as my brother and I would see the 20th Century Fox logo and then hear the music, "Star Wars is on again!!!!"

-I remember in the summer of 1982 hearing the 3rd SW movie was called, "Revenge of the Jedi."  And that was the first time in my life I couldn't wait for a movie to come out when it was still a year away!

-I still remember exactly where I sat in the theater when I saw Empire and Jedi, but faintly remember where I sat for SW.  Empire, we sat on the right side about 10 rows back, and Jedi I sat in the middle/left about 20 rows up.

-Around 1985-86, I was hoping for the Sequel Trilogy, and really wasn't that stoked for the Prequel Trilogy.  At that time we were suppose to get 9 Episodes, but it wasn't decided which trilogy Lucas would do first.

-My mom gave all my SW action figures to either a neighbor or one of my cousins, and we still joke today how much my collection would have been worth:   The Death Star, Millenium Falcon, Hoth, X-Wing Fighter, Tie Fighter, and every action figure.

-SW, Empire, and Jedi are the only movies that I have seen a zillion times and STILL not sick of them.  Even great movies from that time like Superman, Back to the Future, and Raiders, I gotta take a break from them.  If the OT is on Spike, or if I pop in the DVD's, still just as great as they were from 77-83.

chainsawAsh I understand people are upset that the original cuts of EP 4-6 are not going to be on the blu-rays but it's not like it's the end of the world.

KenKraly2007,  you are on a site that's sole purpose is geting the originals on DVD and now on BLuRay, what did you expect around here?

Of course it is not the end of the world if you put it in perspective of problems like war, poverty, etc.

But we all have that in perspective, so it is a big deal in the context of the little things in life we like to enjoy, and Lucas has never given us that.

I know this is off-topic, but the Beatles broke up because they didn't want to dilute the product anymore or taint their legacy?

Also, Seinfeld did do a Season 9, and many (including I) think it's easily the worst season.  But it doesn't affect me when I'm watching a gem from Season 5.

The Beatles stopped touring in 1966, so they could concentrate on Studio albums, and they went on to make great albums like Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, and Let it Be.  Ultimately, they broke up because they hated each other (like most groups), and Yoko Ono was in on every studio session too.  But the point is that the Beatles never did anything crappy, and that is what makes their legacy that much more incredible, they never jumped the shark.

As for Seinfeld, I meant he never did a Season 10, as the first 2 seasons were half seasons, so I always count them as one.  But Seinfeld has said, he felt the quality in the last season wasn't as great as others, and he knew it was time to retire on top.  I can't tell how many great TV shows went on and on and ruined their legacy.  Case in point, The Sopranos was THE BEST DRAMA I have ever seen on TV for the first few seasons, and then it went about 2-3 season too long, and I honestly don't look at it the same, because it got really bad the last couple of seasons.

My point is that Jedi was probably the tip of the iceberg to Star Wars jumping the shark, and if Lucas stopped in 1983, I guarantee it wouldnt get much flack.  But after the SE, PT, and the other crap he has put out, now people realize that Jedi WAS the beginning of the end.

So I disagree with you, even I look at Jedi different then I did before the PT, because I realize alot of bad shit in the PT seems to have started with Jedi.

I've never understood this point of view.  I remember having this discussion (if you want to call it that) with vaderisnothayden several times.  You don't have to consume the new product.  It's pretty easy to ignore, even on this forum.  I do it all the time with the EU.  But why take it away from those who might enjoy it?

I agree it is easy to stay away from SW stuff, as I have never gotten into EU, or the new Clone Wars stuff.  But there is a point where dillute your product just to make money, and to me it cheapens it a bit.

Why didn't Coppola make Godfather IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, etc. ?  Why didn't Seinfeld continue on with Season 9, 10, 11, etc. ?  Why didn't the Beatles continue making music together after 1970 up until John Lennon's death in 1980?

The reason all of the above are iconic is they knew when to stop, and didn't dillute their product. Godfather III was savaged, as even Coppola admits it wasn't that good and he did it because of financial problems, but he knew when to stop.  They all could have made more money with more movies, TV episodes, and albums, and there would have been a market out there that would have paid for it.  But that doesn't mean it is the right thing to do.

Sorry, but Star Wars and George Lucas is not looked at the same as it was in 1983.  Star Wars was iconic, and in some ways the OT still is, but it has been dilluded by the SE, the PT, and the endless knockoffs that puts it in the same vein as Star Trek.  It is now created a fanbase that is a punchline of virgins, and losers who camp out on the opening day.

If George stopped after 1983, he wouldnt have made as much money, but he and the movies would be looked a whole different way in 2010.

What is there against Rick McCallum? Does he have any creative input at all? Isn't he a logistics man who does Lucas's bidding? I know his voice is grating, but seriously, how does he even deserve blame?

Because he is such a lacky in every interview, and he is everything different then the guys who worked on the OT with Lucas who would stand up to him if they disagreed.

I know McCallum thinks like us, he's an OOT guy, he probably thinks the PT is crap, and probably thinks most of the SE chagnes are ridiculous, but he's on the payroll, so he has to be a corporate guy.

He is like listening to someone from the Presidents Staff on a TalkShow, he is not going to criticize anything because he would probably get fired.

I don't give two shits.

If they were gonna do a sequel trilogy, they should have stuck with their post-ESB plan and given us an Episode VI with a more open ending, then done the sequel trilogy in 1987, 1990, and 1993, followed by a different prequel trilogy in 1997, 2000, and 2003.

I remember reading Lucas plan right after Jedi came out, and all through middle school I would wait anxiously for the Sequel Trilogy.  Back then without the internet, you just kinda hoped when the spring rolled around for that first TV spot of a Star Wars movie.  By 1987, I was in 8th grade, and finally gave up hope for the ST.

What is it in Empire that shrinks the universe? I know you don't like Vader being Luke's father but besides that. I agree with you on ROTJ, though.

I am a OT diehard fan, but I was never a huge fan of Vader being Lukes father.  I thought that is where SW all went wrong, as the focus went TOO much on Darth Vader starting with Jedi, and then onto the Prequels.

Now don't get me wrong, I still think ESB is a great movie, and I enjoy Jedi too.  But I am a SW fan because of Luke, Leia, and Han, not because of the Darth Vader revelation that later led to Luke/Leia being siblings, which later led to Darth Vader building C3PO, to Owen owning C3PO, Boba Fett being the clone template, etc.
