The Starlight Project Addendum: The Rise of Skywalker (Freeform Brainstorming Session)
Time

Excited once you’ve finished your episode 7 edit. But i have a question, probably i don’t understand a certain story point:
In my head it seems a bit abrupt from kylo consumed by the sith spirit, losing to to rey on the ds and becoming redeemed at the han scene. Or is there a fair amount of time till this scene even happen?

I’ve got the Sors Bandeam lines from Ross and I’m currently trying to integrate them into the Jedi Voices scene, however, I’m having difficulty because the audio mix is so dense at that point - the Jedi voices move across all the different channels, and have reverb and echo across some channels as well. I could really use some help from someone who’s good at separating music and voices from audio; I know it can be done with EQ tools, but I don’t have the technology or know-how to do it.

Alternatively you could ask danieldubb for assistance, he seems to be an audio engineer:

I like the subtle correction, too.

What do you have in mind for a new grading?

It would be similar to what I did for ANH, with an approximation of a Technicolor look. Scene by scene regrading to give them a older, more filmic look and make the skin tones sing. I don’t want to do that for this version however since the governing principle is for changes to be less-noticeable whenever possible…

I would totally dig the technicolor feel, nice to hear. Could you share an example how it would look?
Do you intend to regrade it for the „starlight“ version? Or will you take a well deserved break after finishing this version?

So i was able to watch your edit. I do like the much more shorter film length, but i think on some scenes you could reintegrate some sources for a little more breathing and context e.g. last moment of fight between palps and mace. You establish anakin arriving without him flying to the scene (which is fine) but he standing besides maces last blow and out of the blue anakin interfering feels absurd (even though i think you tried to make him look impulsive? This didn’t worked for me).

On a technical hand, the only thing that really occurred to me were the audio transitions in ~60% of the time. Some examples:

  • 0:37:46, before next scene and new soundtrack, there is starting another soundtrack from another scene for a brief moment
  • 0:36:25/26, audio transition not fluent, kind of abrupt
  • 01:04:46, same
  • 01:27:55/56, same

Did a little more smoothing out on “I” and “am a.” Is it any better?

Also, maybe I’ve watched this clip too many times, but what if Palps says, “I am all the Sith. You are nothing. A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me.” Sade, you’re the expert - did we try it that way already? Would it make any significant difference to the scene?

Hell if I know.

Didn’t heard it in a while, but i think it is close to fluid. I would think it’s a natural swallowing of the „i“ before „am a jedi“ (i’m no english native speaker).

Yeah, I’m trying to stick to music from the film wherever possible and I think I tried the darker music and felt that it wouldn’t work as well.

I think this piece of music from Rey’s TLJ force meditation would work really well.

PS: It’s an honour to be on the credits.

Could be working, i stumbled it upon myself. You‘re faster in providing it for the thread^^

Also Nev: Thanks for the honor and the work to type all these names😅

oh boy, didn’t expect another iteration: i do like the third version as well!
i can relate to the people opposing my thought. Another idea but don’t know if it is possible:

  • the one time sith eyes may work great if we could get rid of the „i hold your arm and you mine“ before her final blow. This way the presence of her dark side/anger is felt more continued and the scene is more dynamic.

I´m gonna repeat myself: gorgeous

Something that came to my mind while watching:

  • is it possible to track the sith eyes throughout the rest of the fight until after she had hit her final strike and than is drawn out of her anger due to the crumbling ground WITHOUT being a massive workload for you?

This way it would be even more convincing she defeated Kylo.
