I wish Disney would just release his restoration. It looks phenomenal!

Mike’s “restoration” (if you can call it that, it’s really more of a fan-made special edition) is not a professional restoration. From feedback I received from someone who has seen it, it’s inconsistent and the best looking shots are ones where the camera is static since Mike focused on resolution and dirt removal. The reason why it looks phenomenal in his previews is because he’s hand-picked his best looking shots. Since resolution was his focus he also oversharpened the entire movie, not unlike the 2004 Lowry Digital restoration. As per his own videos he rotoscoped certain elements to make them sharper (for example the opening crawl) resulting in them looking nothing like they do on film. The re-compositing is ironically the same thing that GL did in 1997 as the main changes for the Special Edition, and Mike has also fixed things in the original the he didn’t like, so it’s odd that MV calls his edition a “restoration” when he’s making similar changes to what GL did, just using different tools and techniques. From what I understand the quality of the movie is not consistent since the techniques that he developed only work well for certain shots and not others. Mike’s creative decisions aside, he doesn’t have the tools or expertise for correct colour timing, to fix warpage, or reduce flicker.

This isn’t to criticise Mike, I haven’t seen Legacy myself. It’s his project and up to him to decide what he likes. It’s just to let people know that Mike’s idea of a completed restoration is an edition that he is happy with, with a bunch of changes in it, which looks different to the original film due to his own creative decisions, and without many of the restorative corrections made which most people would expect out of a professional restoration. If you want the original Star Wars, the O-OT, Legacy isn’t it. If Disney released it, well I honestly don’t know who it would really please (besides Mike obviously) we’d still be asking them to restore and release the original 1977 movie without any changes.

Interesting though, of course I was happy to hear what he did but also I questioned the volume of his „restoration“. He put out a 3h stream and shows only 4 images, if I recall it correctly. It is really funny that someone always know someone in this microcosmos^^ Thanks for that insight! And I agree, with legacy, we still would scream for oot 😄

Ok, than I appear to have false information. Long time ago I heard from someone who knows someone at Lucas film, the negativ wasn’t stored as it should’ve been and therefore most of it lost its quality. But alright, it is a delight to know it is intact.

Edit: I think, mike verta is telling something about fading, eroding of the original negativ, also.

Do you mean the image stacking approach with several prints? Surely an interesting and quite perfect approach. But as he stated, he invested (ten)thousands of $ in this private project and though i think not possible for this preservation community.
I do respect his ethical choice to not make it public, but deep inside me I wish he would for the sake of preservation of modern culture.
It would be interesting what Disney thinks about this particularly project and thoughts of doing it also. From my point of view it wouldn’t be a hassle for them with their resources. They could launch it to cinemas and after that physical, nearly everyone of the fanbase and half or three-quarters of other people would watch it several times in the cinema and buy the blu-ray (1080p and 4K).

Thanks StarkillerAG I’ll keep working on this. CMMAP, I could try and cut the tail end of Obi-wan’s impact into the wall, but it doesn’t really bother me. I’m more inclined just to cut the force throw altogether but that would mean I have to cut Vader slamming closed the blast door which is cool.

Edit: CMMAP, I trimmed the tail end of the impact and found it to be an improvement. While at it I also brutally cut more earlier portions where the SC38 derpfake was on so crooked poor old Ben looked like a weird bobblehead.

Do as you please, it is your edit and I’m just expressing my thoughts, I don’t have the ability or experience as you do in editing 😃
It certainly sounds now more promising.

0:11 till 0:14 still not a fan of this, but it blends in really good for the transition to the original.
to remove obi-wan gets pushed arround is the right choice. I certainly like that vader force pushes obi-wan, but what do you intend to do with the impact? pretty obvious it is an fan production. Or do you think, this will be something to live with to have sc38 project in this edit?
Overall all other changes are pleseantly. Do you intend to add grain to the sc 38 footage at the end?

Work will resume of the Revisited edits on September 14th. 😁😁😁

At the end of this month we will finally start to have a wage coming back into the household. Sadly a lot less than we had before, but at least its enough for us to cover our bills and food. And there are a LOT of people that are suffering a LOT more than we have than still don’t have this luxury.

Thank you so much to everyone that helped support me through these difficult times. I really can’t thank you enough. Yes, this period has created a hell of a lot of debt for us, but at least, thanks to you guys, we were able to cover some of our bills.

I must apologise for not doing the Q&A video that i originally promised. To be honest i just haven’t been in the right frame of mind to do anything like that. But it will be coming shortly after i restart work on the edits.
Things will still remain quite quiet until the start date because i’m still severely limiting the time spent on the computer to keep the electric bill low until we can start affording it again.

I’m also going to go back in this thread to try and answer as many of the questions asked that i have missed

Thank you all for being so understanding.

No worries. Only the best for your private life.

Maybe FATE OF THE REPUBLIC could be Order 66 Origins and Siege of Mandalore instead? I wanted Ahsoka to be the main character of the final film, but her side adventure with the Martez sisters isn’t as important to the final arc as Fives’ discovery is.

If ORDER 66 ORIGINS is in the final film, the rest of the Domino Squad arcs won’t really be necessary. The opening crawl can just explain that Fives is a clone and a friend of Rex.
Also, then Ahsoka’s return in THE SIEGE OF MANDALORE would be as much of a surprise to the audience as it is to Anakin and Obi-Wan.

Sorry to ask, but what do you mean with „order 66 origins“? The seventh season?

I think 0:11 to 0:14 is unnecessary. The camera movement is to fast, it doesn’t match the rest of the film
Also 0:23,5 to 0:28 (starting to show Vader with ignited lightsaber and end with the „aerial“ shot). Perhaps like 0:05,5 - 0:11 then cut to OT approaching Vader (0:30). Problem would be to incorporate the line „I’ve been waiting for you obi-wan…“.

Do you plan to „enhance“ the visuals to match with OT?

I would really like to fit NIGHTSISTERS, MONSTER, WITCHES OF THE MIST, BROTHERS, REVENGE, REVIVAL, EMINENCE, SHADES OF REASON, and THE LAWLESS into a single film to cover Savage Opress’s whole arc, with him as the main character of this film.

MASSACRE and BOUNTY aren’t really that important, so they could be left out. When Savage reunites with Talzin in REVENGE, she explains Dooku and Grievous attacked the Nightsisters, but they’ll survive as they always have. That basically covers the Massacre episode. When Ventress shows up later, it can be assumed she decided to become a bounty hunter without showing her first bounty hunting mission in BOUNTY.

What do you think? I don’t know if I could get nine episodes down to a reasonable 2 1/2 hour film length or not.

Simply put, do your thing. You probably could get hundreds of advices (Wishes) how it should be, but the thing that counts is your idea.
Regarding Nightsisters, Monster, Witches of the mist, Brothers, Revenge, Revival, Eminence, Shades of reason, Lawless: just try it, it’ll be difficult for sure, but maybe you could get in 2 4/5h.

I’d drop Mortis. A lot of people like it, but I think it’s super ham fisted and clunky - to me it doesn’t feature the ‘right’ mysticism for Star Wars. I’d replace that with the Yoda arc (The Lost One, Voices, Destiny, Sacrifice), which does a nice bit of mysticism and also shows Yoda starting to recognise the failings of the prequel-era Jedi order, preparing him for his Dagobah exile, a spiritual clash with Palpatine, and leading nicely into some of the plots of the sequel era.

Absolutely.
A bit context for padmes political skill would be nice though.

For your third episode, I would use the first title.

It would be a welcomed idea, but it is a massive undertaking. I linked you some threads, to gather ideas for yourself. The most anticipated - unfortunately never finished approach due to losing the files - was smudger9´s.
Since then we didn’t had any real finished projects. Just separate sequences as a maul only, mandalor only.

Great news smudger 😃
The poster is awesome, the stylistic choice appeals to me. Only the roman letter I feels strange. It is a good idea, but maybe it should look different, perhaps less opacity or incorporate the I into the title (got no idea for that unfortunately).

Really interesting, as I have always wrapped my head around how to introduce cow and rebels to my friends without watching the whole series.
I am eager to see your maul approach, if you don’t mind?

An edit for cw with Ashoka and Anakin would be appreciated As well as rebels. Smudger9 unfortunately lost all his files and therefore we will never see and end.

And just so everyone knows, in case you did not… Snooker sent me an updated version of the Naboo shot after seeing workprint #4. Just so everyone is on the same page, here is the most recent clip I have from her, in context:

My two cents:
I think it looks great, but regarding the naboo shot: the smoke on the stardestroyer should appear while/after the explosion takes place.

Has it been considered to change all of the dialogue about Anakin’s saber to reflect that it’s his? For example, Maz’s line in TFA is fine: “That lightsaber belonged to Luke, and his father before him” but there are lines in TROS that call it Luke’s when it’s, well, not. Luke built his own. For example, when Rey tells Leia “I will earn your brother’s saber” could brother somehow be replaced with father?

Luke owned it for two films while Anakin only had it for one. It was definitely Luke’s just as it was Anakin’s before that.

I think it’s more that even when Luke used it, he treated it as his father’s lightsaber. Just as you’re making the connection that Luke used it for two films, Rey used it for three. If you instead wanna go by years, Anakin had that saber throughout the five years of The Clone Wars, Luke had it about 2-3 years, and Rey had it for a single year. With that, then we have Anakin building it and using it for longer than Luke and Rey combined, and Luke building and using a different saber for 25-30 years.

With all of that, I understand re-emphasising the lightsaber as Anakin’s rather than Luke’s, especially with Kylo’s desire to obtain it as part of his devotion to Darth Vader (as it was Vader’s first lightsaber as well).

There was someone quicker than me with a response🙃

Lots to do but a look at some updates. Diplomatic tv, de-aged Dooku at council and pyre, added saber flicker to all sabers, Sidious and the younglings, and changed saber clash look. Still experimenting with color grading on various scenes, like ATOC arena (trying to get a more natural look, but also trying to bring out the darker tones other than just upping the black levels.). I also added a glow to sith eyes and experimenting with a build up of energy in Old Seev before he fires his lightening. Also greyed his skin some and sharpened his wrinkles some. Not really working on the other two right now, just scenes that appear in the trailer for conceptual purposes.

First of all, nice concepts that you got for these specific scenes.
De-Aged Dooku looks good, palps sith eyes very nice (a bit to bright in my opinion), awesome space shot of Naboo with the city lights (but what is the greenish glow?).
The explosions at 1:31 are inadequate, meaning it doesn’t fit to the rest of the scene it feels very c-edited. But I assume you’ll be working on that.
Personally I don’t like the approach with the „building up energy in his face and eyes when shooting“, stands out to much.

I’m looking forward to your project:)

Thanks. I actually lost the whole project about a month ago but managed to finally recovery the files a few days ago. I’m now only 6 fx scenes away from completion but I can’t find anyone with the level of skill to finish them.

Looking for someone with 3d camera tracking and element 3d skills if you know anyone?

Relieved to hear that, even if I can’t provide the help you need for the last effects.
