I don’t think he said they were in pristine shape, just that it wouldn’t be difficult/impossible to do. Doesn’t mean that they didn’t have to track down some second generation sources etc. to finish star wars. Who knows, maybe something was damaged or misplaced when the negative was recut in 1997.

I don’t want to sound rude, because I really like Bill Hunt, but I don’t get what authority he has regarding this. He seems convinced that it won’t happen this year because of the “news” about the negative being conformed, which I thought that we knew since 2006, but he’s also assuming that no work has been done on that.

What is this crap about digital being bad? Digital medium is by far superior in terms of storage and preservation. Unlike analogue recording (film), which starts to degrade/change from the point it is being recorded, the digital recording is basically time-invariant. For example, the colour encoding of digital video is strictly defined, while in analogue film it varies based on the current conditions.
Of course, you might still want to use analogue film camera for some reason to shoot the film, but in any case you should digitalise the film as soon as it shot (in highest possible resolution).
Who here has lobbied for not preserving film elements digitally? As far as I can tell this conversation is all about capture mediums.

That was really bad, even for them. “Just shoot them” is really lazy, and they use it multiple times.
Just shoot them does sometimes work, like in their Clones parody. But here it was incredibly lazy, and it was not even used realistically.

I think he meant Star Wars, Empire and Jedi. And your scenario would never happen. Unless there is an OUT, a multi-version release is inconceivable. Even if we get the OUT, having multiple SE cuts seems unlikely.
I wonder how long TFA and RotS have said “theatrical version” on their amazon streaming links.
Rogue One is noted as the “Theatrical Version” as well. If there were indeed plans to release the OUT, and if it were to be offered for streaming separately from but alongside the SEs, it would make sense to put the version note next all the movies to avoid people asking “is this the theatrical version” for the others.
But would such a release be a surprise? Or simply inevitable (in the long run)?
