This stuff is way more fun that it should be.
This stuff is way more fun that it should be.
Had a weird conversation with a friend the other day.
He confessed that he does not get why people like waiting in lines. When he sees a long line out side of Starbuck's when they have specials like half priced lattes, he says that he just doesn't see the appeal. He feels it is a pack mentallity thing. That people think, "Oh hey! Look at this crowd of people! I must go join them. If they think it is cool, then it must be cool, so I will wait in line to seek the approval of the masses!"
My response: "Dude, you're doing it again. You're overthinking life. Maybe they just want cheap coffee and are willing to wait in line for it."
He shrugs off my answer and continues. "Imagine there is a long line waiting for something, but it consists of opinion less robots who do not care if you are cool or not and cannot provide you with a feeling of approval, would you still wait in that line?"
My response: "???! Yeah, depending on how long the line is and how badly I want whatever it is I am waiting for. I hate waiting in lines. I avoid them at all costs, I don't care about total strangers giving me their approval in exchange for me occupying space in their line. I don't think anybody does."
In the end, he was still convinced lines are a matter of popularity, and a very sheep like characteristic of humans.
And this conversation took place when neither of us had been drinking.

Oh and since i havent been here for a while and dont know what people thought of Avatar. It was good but i was honestly a little underwhelmed by it.
It was shit. But for some reason everyone drops their pants and rubs one out at the mere mention of its title. I don't get it. Even let myself be dragged into going to see it a second time and still didn't get why the mention of its title causes mass euphoria in the general population.
Both times I saw it I went with friends who paid my way and absolutely loved it, so both times I felt obligated to pretend I liked it. I have never felt that way about needed to pretend I liked a movie when I didn't just because someone else paid for the ticket, but in this case it wasn't just that they liked it, but that they were practically buzzing on some kind of thrill high on the way out of the theater to such a degree that I felt obligated to be happy for them and avoid any negative comments.
Kind of like your friend who excitedly shows you his newborn baby and asks, "Isn't she the most adorable thing you have ever seen?" when it fact it is by far one of the ugliest babies you have ever had the misfortune of laying eyes on, but you don't tell him that you just excitedly respond back, "Yeah, she is a really beautiful baby. Congradulations."
Am I just really weird, or has anyone else thought that way about this movie?
Yep. This time next week it will all be over folks.

It's like I'm back in college again (university for you Canadian-types, as I remember this conversation popping up half a decade or so ago, and I don't want to be thought of as having a lesser education).
Oh yeah, I remember that conversation.

You are dead to me...
Yeah! Seriously! Paper Mario is pure bullshit in comparison. Super Mario RPG is one of the most amazing things to come at the end of the 16 bit era. Such a great idea, and so well done. That game never got near as much credit as it deserved, thanks to it being released when its console was on its very last breath.

Dirty, if you mention that in a SINGLE RP I'm going kick you off the site... This proboard is supposed to be serious! If you're not going to be, then this RP just isn't for you...
No FAT-AT for you!
(btw, I'm not giving up on my Death Star...)
I'm not gonna leave the FAT-AT....I will have one!!
FAT-AT..haha...Cracks me up...a flying AT-AT..Poor, poor Solo.....hahahaha
Haha! That is funny! My old Kenner AT-AT had a really tragic accident... which ended in an AK leg amputation. And a three legged AT-AT is pretty useless. Soooo, I amputated the bastard's other three legs and turned him into a spaceship!!!
Never thought of the name FAT-AT though, that would have been awesome!
Octorox just made me feel really old. But that is okay, because Fink made me feel kind of young.
Super Mario Bros. with my sister, Pac-Man and Pac-Mania with my dad, Battle Toads with my cousin, Metroid, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Lengend of Zelda by myself on the NES as a kid. Later on the SNES my fondess memories are Donkey Kong Country with my sister, Super Mario World by myself, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past with my friends (we would kind of tag team it, one person would control and the rest of us would brainstorm ideas for getting past the puzzles. When we got to a boss battle we were constantly ripping the controller from each others hands after every death). N64 era was definitely dominated by Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark with my friends, and I also have many fond memories of playing Ocarina of Time in the same manner and with the same friends, only now much older, as I played through A Link to the Past with.
And that is really where my time with consoles ended and I switched to PC. Half-Life and Grim Fandango are probably my fondess video gaming memories from this short time period. They were probably just about the last games I played before retiring from video games for a while. Only picking the habit back up again just a few years ago.

Haha! As I was reading over this thread, the first thing I thought when I read Stinky's comment on fiddling with his curly tail was, "If I had a curly tail, I would definitely fiddle with it", only to read on and discover that my 2006 self thought pretty much the same thing.
I predict droves and droves of season sets of Lost selling dirt cheap on amazon over the next several months...

So… here’re the questions. You are one of three of the last men/women on Earth.
1. What two companions would you choose, assuming you could, to be stuck with?
2. What two companions would fate stick you with, assuming you couldn't choose.
3. If you went to bed tonight and woke up tomorrow to find yourself in this condition… what would you do?
Hehe, this is funny because it is a topic that comes up almost daily in my circle of friends. I have very long drawn out and detailed plans regarding each of those questions. Unfortunately, I can't really talk about them on a public forum. Sorry.

maybe, but all sorts of injuries and death can be had as well. I would advise Sean to take a class in gun safety before getting a gun.
That is exactly what I advised him to do. All sorts of death and injuries happen from motorcycles, fast cars, and speed boats too. It is a dangerous world out there.
Warbler said:
why would that be dangerous as long as you never pick up a gun?
It wouldn't be. But there are all all sorts of situations where someone might come across a gun. If they know nothing about guns, they are likely to do the wrong thing with it, or think they have it unloaded or disarmed when they don't.

The answer to your question really depends on what you intend to do with it.
If it is for fun
why would someone get a gun for fun? A gun is not a toy.
Sean, if you're really serious about getting a gun, I can't stop you. But please, for the love of god, BE CAREFUL WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A gun is not a toy, in the same way a slick red convertible, a motorcycle, or a fancy speed boat are not toys. Those things can be quite dangerous too, but people still buy them for fun. You can by guns for fun. They are a lot of fun, this isn't to undermine the fact that they are dangerous, that is a given. But when used safely by responsible people, all sorts of fun can be had.
I actually wouldn't consider myself a "gun nut" by any means. So Ferris is probably the better one to listen to on all this, but I'll toss in my two cents anyway.
Have you had any previous firearm experience? If not, I think comfort around firearms is something that is extremely important. I think when it comes to firearms, ignorance and discomfort are extremely dangerous. You might consider taking a competency course, or finding someone you know who is into gun and having them teach you the basics. When you do get a gun, one of the first things you should learn is how to field strip it and reassemble it. I'd recommend you do this until you can do it with your eyes closed. This will really help familiarize you with your firearm.
As for a starter gun, I am really fond of the Ruger MK III .22 cal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_MK_III
One of the nice things about this gun is it is fairly inexpensive to start with, a used one would run you even less, and being a .22 cal that uses standard long rifle bullets, you can get ammo very cheap and spend hours shooting it without costing a whole lot of money. You can buy 50 .22 rounds for under $2, or a box of $375 rounds for around $10 (compare this to 9mm ammo, which cost $11 for fifty rounds). I don't own one of these guns myself, I was first introduced to it through my best friend who has one, and I was really impressed with it from the start. My local shooting range offers one for rent for just $5, so when I feel like really doing a lot of shooting, I'll buy a box of 375 rounds and rent one of those. It is surprisingly accurate, and a lot of fun to shoot.
So, for starters and affordability, the Ruger Mark III would be my highest recommendation to someone who is inexperienced with handguns. Just don't count on it for home protection. It is a good way to get used to handguns, and will still provide future enjoyment for inexpensive target practice even after you upgrade to a higher cal. gun.
My other recommendations would be one of these,

And THAT'S my problem with Halo. The good players rub it in, and the bad players think they're good and try to trash talk their way to the top. We went from having full teams of 8 having fun to my wife and I and maybe one other person in a Party so we don't have to listen to anyone else. I don't enjoy being competitive really, that's why I like L4D so much.
That very last bit kind of sums up me and video games as well. I just don't have time or the desire to play often enough to really get any where near as good as most other people playing online. So for me, playing online is usually about dying over and over and over again. I like to play online with my friends, but a lot of them are better than me too.
Which is EXACTLY (or at least one more reason) why ODST is beyond a doubt my favorite Halo. Firefight is great fun, the competition thing is out, now it is more like L4D, just help each other stay alive and survive wave after wave after wave of Covenant forces. There is no way to win, they just keep coming, it is all about endurance and better yet, about shooting things with your buddies.
Have you ever tried firefight 005? If not, then I think I'd feel safe in recommended ODST if you can find it at an affordable price. Between firefight, and being able to free roam the streets of New Mambasa in a team of four makes it a really great multiplayer Halo game. Yeah, the campaign is really short, but I think I actually enjoyed it more than any of the other Halo campaigns. It is quite a bit different than the other Halo games, and I guess the differences just really appealed to me because I love it, despite all the hate it gets.

c3px, If your mood lightens, i'll probably be playing it on and off a fair bit during the weekend, gonna get the boys around and try some split screen, party up stuff.
Oh, my moods always lighten quickly, and am pretty laid back and slow to anger/annoy, but the stupid download setup for this thing managed to do the trick ;)
I think it is at 75% last time stopped it, I'll go fire it up again in a few minutes and see if I can finally get the thing downloaded all the way.
xhonzi said:
I know... I had to go outside and play with my kids for most of an hour. It totally sucked. ;)
I was worried that when the screen saver came on or the wireless controller shut down that I would have to start over. Thankfully I didn't...
I guess I have just come to reply on my Xbox for everything. It is the only device connected to my TV. I watch movies on it and play my music from it. I wanted to listen to music while I was downloading it and doing a few things around the house, but instead all I was aloud to do was listen to the ODST menu music. Oh well, it is now 91% complete, the annoyance is almost at its end.
Okay, so you so much as press the guide button on the Xbox controller and it stops the Reach Beta from downloading. So stupid. While its 1.5gb are ever so slowly downloading, the only thing you can do with your Xbox is stare at the ODST menu screen.
doubleofive said:
Not I. Didn't get ODST, haven't really looked into Reach. If a bunch of my friends get into the full game when it comes out, I'll grab it. They're still on their stupid COD kicks. I don't care for those games. Giving awesome players more perks doesn't seem fair to REALLY mediocre players like myself. And not being able to take splitscreen online hurts it for my house, since I don't play Xbox much without the Mrs.
Yeah, my relationship with COD began because of a girl, so I sympathize with you on the splitscreen annoyance. Kind of lame I can only play it with her when we are both on opposite sides of town, and that when we are sitting right beside each other we have to find something else to do (though that is never a challenge).
As for Halo, yeah, I like the rank thing in theory. Though it seems about the time I start to get good enough that I am not dying every second or coming up last place or close to it every single round, I get promoted and find myself on the bottom again. So I feel like this function keeps me perpetually the worst player out of whatever group I am playing with, which is exactly why I don't play Halo online at all anymore. With COD, even though I am only at level 17 and often playing with a lot of 70s, I still feel like I have far more of a fighting chance to hold my own on COD than I ever did on Halo. On Halo I am usually dead before I can even pick up a gun.
Meant to download Reach Beta the day it came out, but was feeling too lazy to get up and put my ODST disc in. When I finally did get my ODST disc in and got the download started, I ejected the disc, put the game I was playing back in, and put ODST back in its case and back on the self and sat back down... only to discover that exiting ODST CANCELLED the download. Absolutely ridiculous! Wasn't about to pamper the stupid thing by getting back up, switching discs again, and leaving ODST running without being able to do anything else on my xbox while I waited for a long, slow download to complete. I heard some people get codes to download it without having to have any disc in the drive at all. Not sure why they didn't just include one of those codes with ODST in the first place. Kind of unfair that some people "choosen" to try Reach Beta and get it easy, while those who actually spent $60 on ODST have to screw around with a dumb disc and stupid nonsense such as having to have the game running for hours while the thing downloads.
Maybe when I am not in such a bad mood I will try downloading it again.
NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE 5TH!!

Did you finish BioShock before dumping it? I really liked that game and would be surprised if you didn't find it compelling.
Also, I have to recommend Halo Wars again. I really dug that game... though I understand it's not for everyone.
Oh yeah I finished Bioshock before dumping it! Remember I mentioned Bioshock 2 as one of my unfinished games. Also, I am the guy who made the thread admitting that I spent my precious time poking needles through a baseball in order to make my very own Bouncer Doll. You don't get that kind of dedication to a game series that you have never even finished the first installment of. I not only finished Bioshock before dumping it, but I have gotten each and every achievement in that game, and I am not that big into the whole silly achievement thing to begin with, I just loved the game that much. Even before I played Bioshock my deep yearning desire to play it was one of the reasons I decided to buy a 360 (that and HL2EP2, which my computer just barely couldn't handle). Even with 100% completion on the achievements, it was still kind of hard to part with. A good friend of mine had never played it, but is big into shooters and owns a 360; so I figured I might as well give her my copy as my gentile way of saying, "Seriously? Time to stop playing silly games like COD and Gears of War and pick up this amazingly awesome game that actually has some substance to it!" Sadly, it now sets among her other unplayed games collecting dust while L4D2 and COD:MW2 monopoloize her 360's optical drive.
...
Or, short answer: Yeah, I beat it before dumping it. It is a good game.
As for Halo Wars... yeah... never really been huge on the RTSs, enjoyed a few of the lighter and faster paced ones well enough over the years (the original Red Alert and earlier C&C games, and even Red Alert 2, and a few random non-C&C titles), but have never been huge on them. Halo Wars, definitely being definable by the term lighter RTS, was/is something I could definitely get into if it were on PC. But playing an RTS on the TV is something that has never appealed to me in concept, and even less appealing to me now that I have tried it.
And wow, that Boomer doll is amusing. I think it is pretty cool they are making a whole line of plush special infected, never something I would buy though. I am looking forward to seeing how the others look.
I love triffids!
I am with Sluggo on the fart jokes things, not that I am afraid of them, but seriously? Fart jokes? Ech!
As far as a phobia of something that when it appears in a movie ruins my enjoyment of it... I can't think of anything at the moment.
