Yeah, that line made Lucas seem like such a git. It is so obvious. I can imagine him sitting in his lazy-boy eating potato chips and scribbling down his script in his notebook and laughing till his gut hurt as he wrote that line.

Hmm, I looked into the whole Bilbo and dragon thing a little more. Actually that whole sequence is very similar to parts of Beowulf. Tolkien borrowed plenty of things from plenty of different myths and legends. I think he would actually be proud that new writers and borrowing from the legend he wrote.

However, Rowling will never reach the level of Tolkien. Tolkien's work is unique and will remain forever unsurpassed. You can no more create a work culturally or literarily more significant than Beowulf, Virgil's Aeneid, or Homer's Odyssey. Tolkien's work has made it. No matter what is written in the centuries to come, there will always be collage courses on Tolkien, there will always be Tolkien scholars, his original manuscripts will always be protected and treasured documents, a hundred years from now, when these stupid movies are forgotten and considered visually and esthetically outdated, people will still be reading the tale of Nine Fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom. For this reason, no matter how many people try to copy his style, imitate his work, or even plain out steal whole sequences from his books, it will never bother me.

"Most rational people tend to ignore it."

In fact, I have hardly heard anything about it since Mortal Kombat was getting ragged on. You hear some complaints from time to time about games like GTA, but nobody really even cares about it in the US. Some parents complain about games they buy for their children that turn out to be a big surprise, then they say the video game companies shouldn't make these kind of games. Well, it is the same thing as a parent taking their kid to see an R rated movie, going into shock and complaining at the movie industry for putting swearing, violence and nudity in the film. Parents know not to take their children to R rated movies and they wont have that trouble. Same thing goes for video games, if there is a big M on the box, maybe you ought to consider getting something else. I think for the most part the video game problem in America is getting to the point of becoming a non issue. The media may still blame video games, but like Chaltab said, most people tend to ignore it.

Good-Bye
Time
I guess it is kind of nice to say goodbye rather than just disappearing and not ever posting again. But every single goodbey thread I have ever read on this site give a million reasons why they are leaving and how awfully bad their feeling got hurt.

An ideal goodbye letter would be something like:

"Alright guys I am moving on. I had a good time here, but it is time I move on"
or
"I don't feel like I get along very well with some members of this community, I have had a good time here for the most part. But I think it is time I move on"

If somebody ever posted something like that, I would not find it annoying at all. But every single good bye thread seems like it is either their way of giving the finger as they drive off, or it is them wanting to get attention and inform the whole community that all their troubles in life are due to us and that they will be accepting apologies.

I am surpirsed Zig's post didn't say he would stay if at least 70 of us would sign a petition asking him not to leave. In a way I am sorry to see him go, he was pretty funny sometimes. Things like the petition to get paint wars going again was fantastic. Not to mention Paint Wars was kind of interesting and made even more so by his flakey nature of abandoning it and returing to it constantly.

The Go-Mer-Tonic™ Thread - Today's Topic: Whose your favorite author and why?
Time
For todays (01/22/07) discussion,

I think it is wonderful that banking in America is private. I find great confort in the fact that the US dollar is not backed by gold and that our government can print off as much as they need when they need it. This truely brings warm fuzzies to my heart. I really don't think backing our money with gold is essential. It is not like the dollar is ever going to fall. Anybody else feel the same way I do about this?

Never paid much attention to the giant celephane "S". The thing I think of most when it comes to the 2nd Superman film is the shot where Superman throws General Zod into the giant Coke sign; that's probably my favorite scene from the movie.

Oh, I had forgotten how much I love that movie. The battle in the street is great. I love the part where the three convicts are blowing and everybody is flying away. It is things like this movie that make comic book fans seem like retards. I absolutely love it though.

This Ingo Sucks/Zigfried kid has been a constant thorn in our sides since he first registered.

Can't say that I'd miss him much, he really threw me off with that whole "my cousin cried cause you offended him" bit. What happened to the good ol' days when people weren't offended so easily, and if they were they just left wherever they were and didn't cry about it. It really confirms my theory that the world, especially my great country of the USA, are churning out pussies by the thousands.

I know, people are way to sensitive these days. But I think Ingo/Zig and his cousin's problem are that they are out of their age range. They are looking for TFN quality message boards complete with semi dirty word being edited out. It is hard to imagine Ingo and his cousin above the age of 13 judging by their posts. I really am not sure what to think about Ingo saying that he is in college. I guess I should give him the benefit of the doubt, but I am finding it very difficult.

What do you love about Star Wars?
Time
"I feel the trilogy has more in common with American Graffiti than I-III"

Yeah, so true.

"I love star wars for it's christian themes: Family, Forgiveness, redemption and Salvation.

(an effect which is totally lost with the destroyed 2004 RotJ Ending)"

Yes, great Christian themes like family, forgiveness, redemtion, salvation and WAR!!! J/K!

I don't know. As much as I loved those movies in my youth, I always found ROTJs original ending a little... gay. I liked the more somber music at the end. After all, it was the end of a great war, and much was lost. It is perhaps the one change made in the SE that I always felt was appropriate. Maybe it would have been better with less CG. Oh, but since you said 2004 instead of 97, then I guess you meant the whole "horny sailor" Hayden head pasted over Anakin Skywalker's head, not the Ewoks singing.

You work far too hard but we love you for it.

P.S. As for a title "STARTING WARS" perhaps?

I don't like the name "STARTING WARS", but I think "STARTING STAR WARS" has a cool catchy ring to it and fits nicely along with Building Empire and Returning to Jedi. I think sticking with a name based on Star Wars would be better than one based the name A New Hope, since it was added on after the movie was released. Really gald to hear you are doing this Jambe. I can't wait to see Returning to Jedi. I liked OCP's Deleted Magic, but it is quite a bit different from your projects, it is great to hear you are going to complete the trilogy. Please don't kill youself. We know you put a lot of work into these things.

Is it just me, or is this classification system... ridiculously stringent?

Anybody have any thoughts or explanations? This just seems so pointless.

I am not Australian, but any of the Australians I have met didn't care much for American Football. Perhaps it is absurd that it doesn't get a classification for containing drug use, but I doubt many Australian gamers would protest it if they don't have any interest in it to start with.

Not that it answers your question, just something that struck me. I am really surpirsed there is even a market for American sports games outside of America. FIFA selling in America makes sense, NFL selling in certian parts of the world surprises me.

Oh, I didn't pay that much attention to it. I figured it had the orientation it had to that it could stick in the ground properly. It is still retarded and doesn't make any sense.

Is that aimed at Moth3r or StarTrooper?

I am sorry Zig feels he has to leave, but the offending incendent he mention happened about two months ago. His point in leaving seems to be more about our lack of interest in video games and extreme interest in movies.

Whatever the reason, these goodbye threads get annoying. Seems like we get one a month, then whoever posts them always comes back again, or takes years to leave. It is very often a cry for attention. I can see why Moth3r responded as he did. But perhaps it is not the best exhibit of behavior for a moderator. Feels like the moderator kind of gave up on this place after the rift, back when everybody felt that pissing on the mods was the cool thing to do. Every other post was a complaint at the mods for the way they handled the FE situation. Personally I think their behavior in that situation was fair enough, but since that time I rarely see them post at all, where as it felt like they were fairly active members of this community before that.

The gynecologist thing was a bit of a joke, mostly so people would know who I was talking about. I never thought he/she/it was really a gynecologist, I was just making a reference to their name.

About them being a male however, are you sure? He/she mentioned something about defending her/his maidenhood, which seemed like a very feminine thing to say, but could have been sarcasm. He did mention being forty I believe. And from the moment he mentioned his maidenhood, I always refered to him as if he were a she and he never once protested. So I took it for granted that he was in fact a she. Why does this post keep making me think of Anakin and Obi-Wan entering a bar?

All his/her posts suddenly made sense to me when I realized that he was a forty year old woman. Now that he turns out he is not a forty year old women, he is again an enigma to me.

Uh... so the nazi's killed Jesus? That picture doesn't even make any sense. It is just somebody taking a piss on the idea of Christianity because they don't understand it. If that picture is equating Christianity as facism, it doesn't work very well. In some parallel universe somebody might get offended by someone depicting Jesus on a Roman cross because it will seem they are equating Christianity with Imperialism.

General Harry Potter Discussion
Time
I am not a huge HP fan by any means (wouldn't consider myself a fan at all). I do a lot of reading, and have read all the Harry Potter books. At the time I read them I was teaching English to foriegn students, I struggled to find topics of mutual interest that we could get any good discussion going with. Many of them really liked HP so I decided it would be worth the effort to check them out so I would know what my students were talking about and would be able to discuss the books with them and get them using their English more.

I am a big fan of Tolkien's work and the idea of myth in general. I don't think it is too fair to rag on Rowling for plegerism (however, I do not remember the specific moment you are refering to where she rips off Bilbo's exchange with Smaug). I looked it up on google and found a few sites that listed the places where she ripped off Tolkien, and I think it is a stretch most of the time. I think giant spiders are fair game and have occured in countless comics and b-movies. I don't even think it is fair to Tolkien to compare Rowling to him, as he is a far, far better writer. Rowling characters are pretty two dimensional (IMHO). I feel Tolkien's all have a good degree of depth and believability behind them. In one of the books Harry and his best friend stay angry at each other for hafe the book. This shows it was written by a woman. Only a woman would write to male characters not talking to each other for a month because they are mad at each other. In real life it would have come to fists and they would have been best friends again before the blood stopped gushing from their noses. Also all the parts of the book about Harry's attraction to the opposite sex are very akwardly written. No woman can really understand the feelings a young teen had towards the opposite sex, it is futile to attempt it.

I am not sure how well these books will hold up with time, probably they will be considered classics someday. I personally didn't feel they were that well written. I think their appeal is that they introduce imagination to a bunch of poor kids raised on the tube. When I was little I played Star Wars with my legos, I imagined this one was Luke, and I did my best to make this one seem Darth Vaderish, my imagination did the rest. Today they have Darth Vader and Luke lego figures. No imagination needed. Even the days of blocky Mario left a lot more room for imagination than the modern age of overly detailed video games. Any kid I have handed a copy of the Hobbit to, found the language far too difficult to consider reading it past the first page, yet they are no younger than I was when I first read it. HP is written in very simple language with very large print. The Time Machine is usually considered a kids book, yet we have to abridge it and simplify it to market it to our children.

I am going to attempt to introduce reading to my kids at a very young age, and I hope they have as much fun reading books like the Time Machine, War of the Worlds, Around the World in Eighty Days, and the Hobbit as I did when I was young.
