And those last two posts are exactly why I don't own a Mac of my own, though I would love to have one. Price and compatibility are the only two places I see PC beating mac. And unfortuanately for Apple, those to things are extremely important. I think eventually I will get a Mac desktop and keep a PC laptop. Then I will have the best of both worlds.

Movie Help Needed
Time
Concerning Dune, I guess there are a few versions floating around in bootleg form. But I think the longest cut is ADMs reconstructed workprint, which should be somewhere around four hours long. The only commercially available ones are the theatrical version (137 minutes) and the extended version (177 minutes) I believe. I don't know what that guy was talking about when he told you there was an eight hour long version, probably he was talking about the miniseries that came out about 7 years ago. Anyway, you don't have a lot of versions to worry about, you can either go with the extended or the theatrical, both versions are in the most recent DVD release.

As far as suggestions go,

One of the best movies ever made and it isn't really scary, The Last Man on Earth, staring Vincent Price. Very thought provoking (if you are into mythology of any sort), especially if you have read I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

Someone mentioned A Clockwork Orange. Excellent movie, very thought provoking on many levels. Can be a little depressing. So it fits your criteria. But I wouldn't watch it with a girl friend. It has tons of nudity, and a couple of rape scenes. Could be just me, but I wouldn't like watching it with my girl friend.

Phantom of the Opera is a good chic flick that can be thought provoking if you really focus on the whole unloved beast child thing, but I don't think the movie did as good of a job depicting that as the stage version did.

Probably one of my all time favorite movies is Lewis Milestone's All Quiet on the Western Front. Very beautiful film.

Another film that is defined by the words thought provoking and depressing is Terry Gilliam's Tideland. Unfortunately the thought it provokes most often is "Why did I sit down and watch this tripe" which is ashame because there is a lot more there.

A few others I can think of:
Dr. Strangelove (comdey)
A Perfect World (sentimental as hell, but I liked it for what it was)
Brazil
Casablanca
Strange Brew (not thought provoking in the slightest, in fact you will probably find your intelligence drops after watching it, but it is totally worth it)
Soylent Green
Blade Runner

We picked up a Mac Pro recently for the new designer we hired. My boss was stunned at how the Mac connected to our network and immediately recognized all our network drives and other stuff. Macs handle Windows networks better than Windows does

OS X ftw!

Exactly! I hate Windows networking, seems like it take an hour to get a unit to recognize the network, from my Mac experience (which is more of the Ford Sport Trac variety) you just plug them in and your going. Remember when you watched cartoons as a kid, and sometimes they would depict the year 2000 as this great technologically advanced space aged world. Floating cities, hover cars.

Several years ago I was thinking to myself how much those old depictions missed the mark, and that the world is nowhere near that advanced. Then one day I was traveling and took a ride on a very futuristic feeling subway train. And I thought to myself, You know, were not all that bad off technology wise. This could pass for the year 2000. Well, every time I use a Mac, I get that same feeling. So simple, so easy, yet so advanced and powerful. It is most certainly not a computer for people who don't know how to use computers, as I have heard Mac basher make claim. But the beauty of the mac is that it is can be given to a person who has never used a computer before, and they can learn how to use it much easier than they could Windows, this doesn't mean it is dumbed down, it just has a much less complicated and much more sufficient layout.

Hmmm, imagine a parallel universe where the Mac won out over PC. I wonder how much different the world would look...

I live in NTSC land too. I just didn't pay that much attention. As soon as I read you post I realized you were right. The point is that he doesn't live with his parents (Links seem to have a long history of being orphaned). I was just saying the thing about Vaati being his father because all the other SW references. I still think it is extremely lame and that they should come up with their own lines. Chaltab, you have played this then, are the Oracles any harder than this? Minish Cap really feels like it was aiming at the preteen level. Who I guess are what a lot of the Gameboy stuff seems to be aimed at any more. I am heading toward the fourth dungeon and so far it has all be laughably simple for a Zelda game.

And his uncanny ability to buy other peoples failed ideas, slap a new name on them and make 'em sell like hotcakes. But yeah, mostly luck.

Well, after all that discussion about Zelda on the last page, I had to get my fix. I realized that with the number of games out now, I have only played 50% of the total number of Zelda games, less than that if you include the CD-i games. So I have acquired The Minish Cap and have been playing that. I have knocked out the first three dungeons already. It is a little bit too easy. Feels like it was designed for a younger age group. Kind of a shame. However I am enjoying it, it is very reminiscent of A Link to the Past and the good ol' days of SNES RPGs. Also the story of Minish Cap takes far too many Star Wars rips. The opening words to the game are actually "A long, long time ago" (not kidding). Then the whole Vaati and Elzo thing. It was painful hearing Vaati say, "Now I am the master" (again, not kidding). I don't know if the game was designed this way (in the original Japanese), or if the translators were laughing themselves silly the whole time as they added these lame references. It really makes the story feel cheap. Unless it is paying homage too it in a cleaver way like Monkey Island 2 and the whole Empire Strikes Back ending (I don't care what people say, that was the best video game ending EVER!), then it comes off as extreme cliche. Zelda is its own franchise and shouldn't need to steal dialog from other stories to make it stand. Link lives with his uncle, so I am just waiting for the part where it turns out Vaati is actually his father.

Whoa!! This thread has grown way too kinky in the last two posts! Gomer, Sean, this is not really the place for that kind of thing.

Sean, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were not talking about THAT kind of role playing.

Gomer, you are unexcused from that really gay comment. Better watch out, Rob might start taking an interest in you.

There is really no reason to upgrade to this. I'll end up with it when I buy my next computer probably, but I definately wouldn't pay for a new version of windows. It is not likely to be as big of a leap as WinME - WinXP was. Now WinMe looks so outdated without the wet soapish buttons of XP.

I don't think it would have meant trouble for him. It would have been a thread where he could post about anything he wanted to and argue about anything, and people would only enter it for the sake of arguing with him. If anyone were to get tired of him they would merely have to avoid this thread. In theory anyway.

I love PETA! They are really cool... in a VERY dark and disturbing sort of way. It is hard to believe ANYONE can take them seriously if they have seen any of the publications they have released. Such as the very gory comic book entitled, "Your Mom is a Killer" which propagates children to completely turn against their own parents. Great stuff!

Hmm,
I think the "hardcore" guy is total wimp. I bet he isn't hardcore by any means at all. Unless hard core means pircing your lower lip and claiming it didn't hurt at all. That rave guy, holy crap! I wouldn't turn my back on that fruitcake, I bet he would jump you first chance he got. And I don't think the geek is a real geek. Geeks usually don't worry about the way they look so much, and this "gamer" is totally caught up in his looks. And what is with the untied shoes? How doesn't he trip? I still think the indie guy looks like a carnie. I would keep my hand on my wallet around that guy. All these guys are unbelieveable insecure. Sean, is there a feminine version of this thing? This one only covers male subcultures of the American youth, I think it would be interesting to see the female subcultures.

Well, it honestly wasn't all that funny. Having lived on the otherside of the pond (though not the UK) for a good bit of my life, and having enjoyed way too much Monty Python and Rowan Atkinson and Red Dwarf, and being as fond of Douglas Adams as I am, I tend to find the English sense of humor considerably funnier than American humor most of the time, at least as far as watching it on the TV. I have a lot more laughs with my American friends when it come to hanging around and having a good time. Culture, you know. I think it is really great Americans have the sense of humor they do, well except when they find it gut splittingly funny when Jim Carry makes stupid faces, then it is a bit embaressing.

You see, everybody eats bread. Those statistic that Sean posted are pretty accurate from what I understand. It is just a joke giving US statistics for everybody and saying look at the statistics for bread users (much like the statistics for drug users that are used to prove the negative effects of drug use). It's a joke. Bored people, you know.

I happen to be a pretty heavty bread user. In fact, my wife bakes our bread for us, so I don't even use the poor quality store bought stuff, but the real premium quality home made stuff. I admit, most of those facts you wrote seem to be true, but honestly, if I wanna use bread, what business of yours or the government's is it? I am not hurting any one! LEAVE US BREAD USERS ALONE! ITS OUR CHOICE!!!!

People hate to be labeled as goth? Then why to they go through all that trouble to make themselves look goth? A hint of advice for them, don't dress yourselves like a corps if you don't want to be labeled goth. I remember at one point it was cool to be different, I think that only lasted a year or so, but now we are obviously trying to look as much a like as possible. Sean, that picture was pretty useful actuall. I hear all these label a lot but I was not sure exactly what they meant.

Well, when I say it was amateurish, I'm not necessarily talking about production values. I'm talking about camera angles, lenses, editing, ect all seemed like he was filming it for tv, or was just relying on what he learned from filming for tv while making the movie. It just wasn't very cinematic.

For the TV show Joss wanted to give it an amateurish kind of feel. Not really amateurish I guess, but he wanted to give it kind of a rough feeling. Like I mentioned before, the whole show seems like it was filmed with handy cams, except for the scene with the alliance. Perhaps he was trying to carry that feeling over to the movie. I agree with you Windexed, the made-for-tv feeling had nothing to do with budget. It doesn't feel very cinematic, I was very surprised at this when I first watched it. From all the hype have I heard about it for various people, I was expecting it to be one of the greatest sci-fi movies of the modern age. I wanted to see the movie but my friend said it is better if you watch the show first, so one of the main reasons I watched the show was so I could see the movie. But in the end I liked the show a lot better than the film.
