Post Office unveils Star Wars stamp set
Time
Ah great word, immortalizing. Exactly, that is what I was expecting, something the represents the legacy SW has been for thirty years, not another marketing campaign. That the Luke stamp, the Han and Chewie, and the Leia are the type I was expecting. Anybody see the recent D.C. comics stamps? I think I was using those as my standard when I first heard the announcment of the SW stamps. Those were cool because they were not the modern depictions of these heros but they were the classic depictions of them. Not as they are drawn in comics today, but as they were drawn 40 years ago.

Questions

Do you think the display is eye catching?
No, it us kind of hard to tell what is going on. The Darth Vader head thing is good, but the part with the label is could work better with some more images. The three ghosts are kind of vague, maybe an image of the droids, the Falcon, or the the three main heros.

Do you think you would notice this display at a till of a store?
Yes

Would you be tempted to buy the box set displayed?
Now that depends more on internal content anamorphic original trilogy is a big selling point to me. So yes, I am sure I would.

Do you think the Darth Vader and Leia characters on the stand are iconic?
Yes, but I had to stop and think for a while to figure out why Leia was a force ghost, until I realized she was suppose to be a hologram. Maybe a white Leia would go more.

Do you think the design of the box set is interesting?
I really like the Death Star box idea. I knowyou have limited resources and that is why it is not so detailed, but I really like it. It reminds me of the Planet of the Apes Ultimate ape head set.

Would you display the box set?
By bex set we mean the Death Star DVD case right? If so then yes I would.

Would you automatically associate the box with star wars?
Yes

Is there enough information on the box?
I think it could stand to have the name of each movie listed, and maybe images to represent the entire saga.

Would you pick the shaped box set over normal DVD cases?
Yes, depending on how much more it costs. If it is considerably more, then no. Also it has the disadvantage of not fitting on the shelf with the rest of the films, but like I said, I really liked the whole Death Star case idea, so for the sake of this questionare I will say yes.

That was in bad taste.

Oh and the Marvin Gaye one wasn't?

Oh, I missed the Marvin Gaye one. I found the Cobain joke funny, I laughed at it even. But now I feel really guilty about. I haven't been able to sleep at night. I think I'll take a trip to his grave an apologise in person. Maybe leave some cigarettes on his stone. Then maybe I will be able to sleep again at night.

I agree about the killing of Chewie thing. I never precieved it as trying to make the series more real, but rather as the "super weapon of the week thing", that was pretty obvious from the beginning. They even marketed off of that. I think it was in the SW.com email that they made a big deal about Salvatori (sp?) killing off Chewbacca with Lucas' blessing. The article talked about how Salv. decided that it was Chewie's time to go and when he asked George what he thought he told him he liked the idea, go with it. That is very much marketing, and I am sure that was much more effective than saying that this novel features a new super duper, ultra, mega Star Destroyer 5150 times larger than Vader's and with 27 laser cannons, each able to destroy planets 88% more efficiently than the Deathstar.

Hmm, I was expecting something different with the stamps. I guess they are not that bad, but I really am not that impressed. Reminds me too much of the covers from the last three DVD releases, which I have always hated. Some of the stamps are cool, but being for the 30th anniversary and all I was expecting more images that had to do with a 30 year old movie, and less that have to do with a movie only seven years old. At least there was no General Grevious stamp.

Wow, I had no idea Billy D was really going to be on the show, I thought stinky was just being himself and saying something random. Sucks he was only on screen for a matter of seconds. I bet they put him on to compensate for their murdering or kicking off every black guy/woman on the island.

So what did everyone think about the last episode? I thought it was total crap and truly a waste of time. After the last two episodes becoming more interesting this one was an undersirable change of pace.

The Go-Mer-Tonic™ Thread - Today's Topic: Whose your favorite author and why?

Wow, I am surprised nobody has an opinion on this. Weren't we just here less than a year ago? I remember something about a couple of Israelis, but I am not quite sure. Seems it lead to a silly little war or something like that. But hey, that was almost a year ago, ancient history these days. Not even worth considering.

Oh, one more thing, what is the purpose of the UN again? Because I keep forgetting.

That is all.

Seems the "in" thing to do these days is to call authors hacks. You can do it with anyone really, J.K Rowling is a hack, J.R.R. Tolkien was a hack, G.A. Henty was a hack, Tom Clancy is a hack... Not even really sure what a hack is anymore, but most of my favorite authors have been or could be accused of being hacks. That said, Kevin J. Anderson writes in an easy to read style which makes him very popular among casual readers and he usually writes very cheesy and exaggerated stories, which is what makes the tale of IG-88 so likable, you feel no obligation to take it seriously.

You have reached the last of the good episodes. Your in for a lot of crap until you reach the 13th and 14th episode of season three. But since you are watching them on DVD (the smart way to go), once you get over the initial search of waiting for the DVD release, you wont have to wait for the next episode, which makes watching crappy episodes a bit more bearable.

Could you answer Klaatu's question: 'Who is the greatest thinker?

I should have put Gandalf as my fictional greatest thinker. Gandalf is awesome, especially if you have never seen the movies.

All right, so seriously this time,

Alive: Ray Bradbury (my favorite Bradbury quote: "Michael Moore is a screwed asshole..." it makes me laugh everytime.)
Dead: Solomon (come on, even if you believe the Bible to be a complete work of fiction, Solomon's stuff is great "nothing new under the sun" good stuff.)
Fictional: Sherlock Holmes

Yeah, but it shouldn't be hard to write stories for both locations. The show could easily have two things going on at once, but it seems like it is unable to multitask. We either get excitment on the beach at the cost of nothing with the others, or excitment with the people hunting out the others camp with nothing at the beach. And when there is nothing going on at the beach the writing for those scene is very half assed. The show use to be able to juggle multiple things, they could squeeze a lot more into that forty two minute time slot.

See that is the thing, these things have pretty much no repeat value at all. I think they do have a "master plan", but they are adding a lot to it. I think there is a general direction they want to head and a place they want to end up in the end, but they are spending as much time as they can beating around the bush in order to make the show last the currently planned five season and maybe more. I thought season two was great, even the transition from season one to season two was excellent, but since three things have slowed to an extreme hault. And some things are getting too stupid and predictable.

I agree the show is starting to pick up a little, but no where near as good as it was at parts of season two. It is sad, the show had great potential. All my friends who could not stop talking about the show up to and after the finally stoped watching after the first six episodes of season three. But I guess enough people still watch it that ABC has been talking about stretching it out to seven seasons. To me the show has already jumped the shark, now it is only mildly amusing. It is like reading a mystery novel where there is another murder every single chapter, but no luck in the search for the murderer, and you already know nothing about the murderer is going to pop up until the very end of the book in a chapter yet unwritten. So, where is the motivation to read the book? Might as well wait until the last chapter is writen and start reading from there.

Also the interaction between the characters is piss poor. Only the part of the story the writers are currently focusing on has any substance, they might as well not include scenes in which they have no idea what to do with them. All the scenes with the beach people are all really poorly done, it is like the writers have no clue where to go with those characters, but they feel they have to include them anyway so they just scribble down bits of drivel. Nothing is happening there at all, they just sit around all day, some guy finds a mysterious Volts Wagon crashed out in the middle of the jungle (where there is no road or even terrain vialble for such a vehicle), tells every one and they treat him rudely and have no interest whatsoever in checking it out. Uh, yeah...

The Best Star Wars Books?
Time
To address Starboy's original question again, I also remember enjoying a couple of the stories from the "Tales of the Bounty Hunters". It is one volume with several short stories all by different sci-fi authors. The stories focus on the life stories of all the bounty hunters who are after Han in ESB, sounds pretty boring huh? Well actually it is. But I enjoyed the story of Boba Fett (I like the way Fett's character was portrayed, somewhat like a more rational version of Timothy McVeigh, who makes a living killing rather than committing mass murder), though I read the thing right after it was first published which was in sometime around the mid nineties, so it has been a while. I also really enjoyed the story of IG-88. It was actually one of my favorite bits of the EU. It is a pretty goofy story about IG-88 becoming self aware, killing his makers, and then scheming galactic domination. It is kind of like the Borg meet Terminator as he goes around planting his memory in everything. He even eventually "becomes" the second Death Star and has complete control over it. At one part he slams the lift doors shut in Palpatine's face, who then uses the force to rip them open again. So, as you can see it is terribly cheesy, but it is short and a fun decently written read (IG-88's story was written by Kevin J. Anderson). Aside from IG-88 and Boba Fett's stories the rest of the book is crap.
