IN NEW YORK NOW...
Time
The Burton film does try to follow the plot of the book more closely. I liked the book a lot actually. In it the apes are much more modern, they even drive around in automobiles. The humans are dumb animals just like in the old film, also Nova is taken right out of the novel. But in the novel once it turns out he can talk, he becomes very popular and is welcomed by the apes. Only certain apes are plotting against him. Later it turns out he got Nova pregnant and after his son is born Cornelius and Zira are afraid his life is in danger, so they help him escape in his ship with Nova and his son. After years in his ship with his family they find earth and land in Paris (the book was written by a Frenchman) he is very excited to be home, even though he knows a couple of thousand years have passed since he left. After his ship lands he finds out that earth is now run by apes. The end. So it has a bit of the old and the new (or rather, they both have bits from it) but the ending of Burton's film is very clearly inspired by the book.

I had seen the previews for the 2001 remake and never had any interest to see it. I had also heard from friends that it was awful. Finally a couple of months ago I watched it for the first time, and couldn't believe how much I hated it. Especially lines borrowed from the old film, like "Get you hands off me you damn dirty human" that was pretty painful to watch. The worse part is where that female monkey is dancing for her husband as they are gettng ready to have sex. At that moment I felt embarressed to be watching the film on account of its lameness.

Revised? You talking about the 2001 remake? Yeah, avoid it. I absolutely hated it. It is pretty painful. As a die hard fan of the old ones, I couldn't bare the new one. It follows more closely the original novel in several ways, but it is pretty crappily done IMHO. Watch all the old ones though, there are five of them. There is also a live action TV show that ran for only 14 episode, it is also very enjoyable if you liked the movies.

Anyone else totally disregard Lumpy being Chewbaccas's son?
Time
I really don't think Itchy was created to end "Chewbacca is Han's lover" rumors. I think he was more part of a device to give a "plot" to the Holiday Special and make more money off this incredible popular movie. Most people disregard the HS, including George, so they probably disregard Itchy too. Did he appear in other EU novels? If they really wanted to make him canon, Chewies wife could have at least been in ROTS. I never liked the idea of Chewie abanddoning his family on account of a life debt and becoming a rotten father and husband. Also makes Han a jerk for not releasing him from it. The Chewies family idea was a bad one from the start, as bad as the rest of the HS.

Yeah, James Joyce tends to be that way. For people who like it great, but if not, I wouldn't waste my time. Unless you feel the neccessity not to let a piece of literature defeat you.

You've never seen it before? The Planet of the Apes played on the History Channel? Wow, talk about revisionist history! Those are some of the best films ever! They are the kind of movies I can watch repeatedly and never get board of.

My first step into a larger world.... Splinter Of The Mind's Eye
Time
Yeah, it is very widely available. Try searching amazon. National Public Radio has done the whole trilogy as well as a bunch of EU. They even have one episode (which is available for free on the net because it is nolonger commercially available) called Mission to Ord Mantell, which takes place between Star Wars and ESB. It also contains a Luke flirting with Leia scene. It is pretty poorly done though, all the characters have to reuse lines from the trilogy. One notable part is where Luke says "Come on Han ol' buddy, don't let me down" which is very annoying because he is using a Lando line that chronologically hasn't even been spoken yet. It is still an interesting episode though, but if you listen to it first don't judge the other NPR productions on its standards, they are far superior. Also the NPR trilogy feature Mark Hamill, Billy D, and Anthony Daniels repraising their roles.

I checked amazon,

here is the adaption of Star Wars on seven CDs:

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Original-Radio-Drama/dp/1565110056/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-4286046-5276053?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175993052&sr=8-2

And here is the whole trilogy on 15 CDs:

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Star-Wars-Trilogy-Episodes/dp/1565111648/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-4286046-5276053?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175993284&sr=8-1

I high recommend them, but as you can see, they are pretty expensive. Probably they can be found a lot cheaper on ebay. If you live in the US, I have found that they are very common in Public Libraries, and even if they are not in your local library chances are a nearby library has then and can obtain them through interlibrary loan for you quite quickly. There are 29 Episodes in all, the first 13 of which are all based off the first film, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi both being considerably shorter.

The Mp3 for mission to Ord Mantell can be downloaded from theforce.net here.
But again, this is considerably lower quality than the others, so don't listen to it and decide not to bother with them. The others are considerably better done.

I think it is something more like a S.E.P. generator, but can't be sure. Dude, you should finish Life, the Universe and Everything, it is a lot better read than anything written by J. K. Rowling or Hunter Thompsan.

I also never finished The Satanic Bible. But thats just a silly religion book.

Hunter S. Thompson, J. K. Rowling, Douglas Adams, Anton LaVey, your interests are all over the place Sean. Have you read anything else by Adams other than the (or most of the) H2G2 "trilogy"?

I hate leaving books half finished, but I do it all the time. This year I am working on completing all those abandoned books from the last couple of years, so far I have knocked a good number of them out already.

Info: "The New Planet of the Apes"
Time

ABC use to air certain episodes of the Planet of the Apes TV series edited together into a series of five “movies”. They filmed several short clips with Roddy McDowall as an aged Galen introducing each film. ABC called this series of movies The New Planet of the Apes. The Planet of the Apes TV series has been released on DVD, but they are the originally aired versions, which I much prefer anyway. But for preservation and completeness, I was wondering if anybody had decent copies of these? Or if an effort has ever been made towards preserving these? I found a site with poor quality clips of all the old Galen scenes, does anybody have these clips in decent quality?

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time
SADLY I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WORSE, THE FACT THAT THESE BOARDS HAVE DEGENERATED TO "THIS" (WHATEVER THIS MAY BE), OR THE FACT THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO CONSTANTLY COMPLAIN ABOUT THE BOARD DEGERATING TO THIS WHILE THEY DO VERY LITTLE TO MAKE IT OTHERWISE. Reading post from 2003 - present, I fail to see there having ever been more substance in the past than there is now. It has always been nonsense and fluff, only back then there were more people to post the said nonsense and fluff than their are now. I would love to see an example of "That" (being the way the boards use to be back in its prime) compared to "This" (being what they have presently degenerated to). And if you point me to the Ranking thread, the HLF thread, or the old Mangler Bros. thread I shall laugh violently in your face.

I honestly think Star Fox 64 is one of the best games ever. But I also agree with Billy, Donkey Kong is hands down the greatest game of all time. Anyone who says otherwise sucks just as bad as anyone who has never seen Billy Madison.

Personally, I find it very exhilarating to visit the Statue of Liberty, look up, suddenly collapse on my knees and to angryly shout the following lines:

"I am home. All the time it was… We finally did it!. You maniacs! Ah, damn you! Damn you all to hell!"

As you shout these words try tilting your head slightly to the side and only focus on the upper half of the statue. If done just right it will send chills down your spine. Truly exhilarating. Seriously try it.

Help Wanted: Shadows Of The Empire - cutscenes of the N64 game
Time
No, that is what I was saying, if I had access to a DVD recorder or a digital recorder or a capture device on one of my computers, I could get you all those shots pretty quick. I really don't have anything of the sort. I don't even have a VCR anymore. Honestly, somebody here has got to have a capture device and 64, maybe you should make a request in some of the other sections. I am sure there is a number on this site who never even check the preservation section. Maybe someone in off topic would be willing. If I were you I would post the request in the video games thread, being as it has to do with wanting somebody to play a video game for you. That is a very lively on frequently viewed thread too.

My first step into a larger world.... Splinter Of The Mind's Eye
Time
Yeah, my copy of Splinter of the Mind's Eye (with the exact same cover as Anchorhead's) and my copy of the original Star Wars novelization by the same publisher sit on the shelf together as their own little two book series. Anchorhead, notice how there is no "Star Wars" written on the cover? Isn't that great? Just "From the further adventures of Luke Skywalker". Another bit of "EU" I like is the NPR radio drama of A New Hope. Even though it has the name A New Hope, it is really done in a way to make it feel old fasion. And it has quite a bit more back story in it. It feels so far removed from the "Tradgedy of Anakin Skywalker Saga" we know today.
