Terminator Salvation
Time

Every one who has seen The Dark Knight in the US has seen the trailer for the new Terminator movie. What do you all think?

I am excited about it just based on the fact that it is staring Christian Bale (who looks a lot more like a grown up Eddie Furlong than the guy that played in T-3 did) and that it is set during the future war against the machines.

This is exactly what I would have liked T-3 to have been (I hate T-3 with a passion). My ideal T-3 would have skipped ahead to the grown up John Connor and ended with him sending Kyle Reese into the past to defend his mother. It could have been a cool way to tie up the trilogy, making it come full circle, ending right where it began. From any information I have read about T-4, it doesn't sound like it will be anything like this though.

I doubt Terminator Salvation will be on par with the first two, but I am still much more excited about this than I was with T-3 after seeing the trailer.

The Dark Knight Movie Discussion (July 18th, 2008)
Time

Whoa! Really sad what the TDK thread has devolved into.

Maybe we can get back on topic now, though I suppose the movie has been out long enough that it is old news now.

I FINALLY got to see TDK yesterday. Been dying to see it since release, but things kept coming up, then all my friends had seen it without me and I was having a hard time getting any of them to go see it a second time with me.

I loved it. I am a very harsh critic of movies, and I usual manage to find something in modern movies that totally pulls me out of the movie and ruins the whole thing for me. The whole time watching TDK it was near perfect, little tiny things here and there, but nothing that ruined the film. I was impressed. Until toward the very end and Dent's face gets burnt off, I was expecting that of course, and all the story points worked fine for me. The only thing I didn't like about it was the look of the burnt face. Looked too zombish and unreal. I am surprised nobody else mentioned this before. His lidless eye would have dried out, even if it had somehow managed not to be burnt up with the rest of his face. Also I am pretty sure it would be hard to articulate words as perfectly as Dent does with only half a pair a lips. I was expecting them to go for something much more realistic looking. Just came off as really cartoony to me and not grotesque as I suppose the intention was.

So, that was the thing that managed to pull me out of the movie, but I am determined not to let it ruin the movie for me.

As for the convict throwing the detonator out the window, I thought that worked perfectly. From the moment the detonator showed up and was explained I thought that if I was the prison guard I would have thrown the thing out the window, or at least locked it away in another room rather than keep it there in the open in from of a mass quantity of hardened criminals. I can totaly relate to the convict, being a hardend killer himself and probably having spent a good deal of time in prison to reflect on how his life had gone wrong, looking at the prison guard holding the detonator and thinking what an asshole he was for even considering the possibility of blowing the other boat up. I thought that scene was very well done. Surprised it got complained about.

I honestly think politics ought not to be discussed on a board like this....A lot of boards limit discussion of politics, even in off-topic sections.

Yeah, well that is one thing that puts these boards a cut above the rest. Maybe that is another reason why so many of us here could be categorized as "right-wingers, because our stance for low level government control bleeds over into our forum visiting preferences. If you notice, the moderators around here take a hands off approach to governing this site (i.e. no silly rules such as "no political discussion", as it seems, according to Octorox, many other boards do. The moderators spring into action only when necessary.

I don't see the problem with discussing politics on a board like this, I never feel any differently towards fellow board members who have expressed different political view points from myself, that would be rather silly.

Also, I honestly do not believe that there are really an exceptionally larger number of right leaning board members as opposed to left leaning. There have been a relatively small number of members who hang out in the politics thread, mostly the same small group of us. The majority of that group may seem to lean to the right, but that says nothing about all those members who do not participate in political discussions.

Most wealthy people are stuck up assholes who couldn't care less about us. Money corrupts, the more you have, the greedier you get. We need the government to put a leash on these people so we can keep things in order from escalating out of control to a third world country like what has proven to happen all over the world and through history. If you compare government or union to non-union jobs, you will find the union ones have better pay, better rights for their workers, and better quality work to non-union industries in most cases. Then perhaps we wouldn't mind paying higher prices if it means we have higher salaries and the workers are happier because they have more rights, better pay, and the product is better quality. You don't realize how sick people are. We would still probably be having people work for slave labor if it wasn't for unions. The governemnt system (run under democrats) is looking out for people more then private businesses.

Wow. Some how you manage to say money corrupts, yet you want extremely wealthy people like Hilary Clinton, Barak Obama, Al Gore, John Kerry, etc., to regulate us from other extremely wealthy people. Interesting...

As far as realizing how sick people are, Ferris is perhaps one of the few people on these boards who realizes how truely sick people can be, but that has nothing to do with this conversation.

"The government system (run under democrats) is looking out for more than private businessess." Because only the government can protect us from ourselves and the evil corruption that comes from honestly earned money. Big brother is looking out for you, just stop thinking and trust his every word. He truely cares about you. When I see the Clintons or some other rich dems donate every last bit of their assets to helping starving children around the world and poor single mothers, keeping only enough for themselves to live a comfortable middle class lifestyle, then I might start believeing all that crap.

I am not rich, far from it. But I don't sink to the level of hating rich people because they have more than me. That is very childish. Why such hatred for the wealthy? There are many wealthy people who do very good things in the world. I think it is quite foolish to go around saying all rich people are stuck up assholes.

That comment very nicely sums up exactly why I am not a Democrat. That self righteous, we are so intelligent, if you think differently than us then you are by default an idiot, etc. attitude. It bugs the crap out of me, and most Democrats I have known have it. It is kind of like the popular kids back in high school, "if you don't wear __insert brand name here__insert product name here__, then you are not cool!" If you are not a Democrat, then you are not smart. Because all smart people are Democrats.

Once on these boards I accurately described myself as a real conservative, only to find some of the local Democrat types decided that the term was 100% the same as Republican (and hey, they are the only smart ones, so who am I to believe otherwise), since then I have decided it would be safest to go with the term libertarian, even though that is not exactly what I am, it is close enough. Better than being tossed in the same bucket as the George Bush/Juan McCain crowd.

Whoa, I wasn't trying to pick on you. I guess I just found it hard to believe that you were really so eager to dish out the cash for the stills books. Probably should have realized that 4 grand is not all that much money for people who have better jobs than myself. Didn't mean to offend, I was just curious if you were really serious or not.

As for being one of the most casual fans on the board, you seem quite a bit more hardcore than myself. I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore fan at all. When I was a kid I had my walls plastered with SW posters, three pairs of SW sheets that cycled on my bed, and SW toys often litered my floor. I went through a period where I read some of the books, but got tired of them quickly. Through my teenage years I'd play just about every SW game I could find, back then they were awesome. When the prequels came out I was hyped up, but then after seeing TPM then later AOTC, I gave it up as a lost cause. Nowadays I have very little to do with SW other than these boards. I have a set of LD transfers on my DVD shelf, Star Wars novelization and Splinter of the Minds Eye on my bookshelf, and an unbeaten copy of Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy burried somewhere in my desk drawer.

I'd still consider myself an SW fan, but nothing like I was when I was a kid. Since I spend most of my time in Off topic, half of the time I forget this place is a SW board.

So, don't get me wrong. I am not saying you should not be excited. Probably why you find yourself seeming to like Star Wars more than the rest of us, while still considering yourself a casual fan, is because many of us never took a break from being fans and have been... not sure what word to use, "burntout" is probably too strong of a word, but something along those lines. You on the other hand seem to have spent most of your life not being an SW fan, despite being fond of it as a kid, and have just recently rediscovered your love for the series. It makes sense you would be more excited about it than the rest of us.

Okay, back to the topic.

The quote by Lucas was:

“I am very concerned about our national heritage, and I am very concerned that the films that I watched when I was young and the films that I watched throughout my life are preserved, so that my children can see them,”

HA! If we read this quote carefully, we can realize that Lucas is not a hypocrite at all. "I am very concerned that the films that I watched when I was young and the films that I watched throughout my life are preserved, so that my children can see them."

Notice he doesn't use "we", "us", "you", or "everyone" in this sentence. He only uses the terms "I" and "my". So, he doesn't care about the films you watched when you were young (such as Star Wars) or the films you watched throughout your life, and he doesn't care if your children get to see them or not. Star Wars does not fit into Lucas' equation because he didn't watch it when he was a child or throughout his life time, he merely made it. Besides, his kid's can watch the OOT in fantastic quality anytime they want, their daddy's got connections.

So, I just proved the irrelevence of this Lucas quote.

Everyone knows I am joking around right? Good, just checking.

has anyone thought of editing the entire venom storyline out altogether?
you can still have brock be brock IMO, and you could perhaps tease venom at the end with the meteorite shot in central park?

That would be great, but pretty much impossible since the black spidy suit is such a centrial part of the story. It wouldn't make any sense for the meteorite to appear at the end of the film, when the suit is there from early on in the film.

I would really like to see somebody attempt a good edit of this film, but I am afraid there is not a lot to be done. It was pretty awful and beyond fixing IMHO, but I would love for someone to make me eat my words.

1) i NEVER SAID there weren't childish or cringe-worthy moments in the prequels, i've never denied it..............................but there are EQUALLY BAD IF NOT WORSE

moments all throughout the original trilogy also..

2) guess what, i was 10 years old when i saw star wars, and even back then i knew a lot of that stuff was written at my level, because i could understand it,

yeah C3P0 was embarrassing to watch, r2d2 wandered around desperately trying to communicate, luke bumbled his way through the dialogue, leia and han

hammed it up..................and darth vader over-acted, along with the rest of the 'british' actors..................and just how did the british accents survive that long?

gee, i guess modern cursing, sayings, and culture (not to mention the hair cuts), didn't date this movie as classic 70's fare.................

so whats your point about childishness, target audiences, and corniness?

i guess you could say we're both right...........

1)Equally bad if not worse dialogue in the OT? If those quotes are all you could come up with, then I am officially declaring that belief a bunch of crap. Exactly which one of those lines do you see as equally bad or worse than "Icky, icky, poo." or "Wessa in big doo doo now"? Here is something fun for you to do -1, Look bad at your post about crappy dialogue in ANH, and rewrite each of those phrases in an un crappy way. Perhaps if you show us how much better written they could have been, then we might agree with you. Along those same lines, feel free to post any PT dialogue you feel is crappy, and I will be happy to rewrite.

2)I was younger than ten when I saw Star Wars and I understood the movie pretty well, that doesn't mean it was written at my level. Plenty of adults saw it and thought it was brilliant. When I was 14 I read John Grisham's "A Time to Kill", I understood everything that went on in that book, but it does not mean it was written for 14 year olds. Things can be made to appeal to multiple age groups, Star Wars is one of these things.

Also, it is not fair to judge the dialogue on its date, this movie was made in the seventies and should be held up to seventies standards. You can't argue that the dialogue sucks because it is using lines that we don't use anymore at present day, when the PT, written in present day uses crap we'd never use anytime.

As for the Brittish accent surviving that long, just how did the American accent survive that long? Depending on your side of the pond, this question can work both ways. Just how did the English language survive that long? And when we are talking about surviving that long, it seems you believe SW to be in the future when it takes place in a different galaxy in the past. Why would they have Brittish or American accents at all? Why would they speak English? What kind of accents would you have them use?

You know, if I was a multi-millionare with a large mansion, I would consider doing that, putting a magnificent golden statue of him and hire toga clad maidens to dance around it and throw flower pedal in the air in one corner of my massive courtyard (filled with finely trimed shrubberies, I'd probably hire a full time shrubber too, just for the heck of it...), and somewhere in the opposite corner I would have the carbonite Lucas with vines of thorns growing around it. Too bad I will never be a millionare....

Time

I thought about writing this several times before this week, but have until now refrained.

What is up with all the Lucas hate lately? Everytime I come into the general SW discussion over the last few days and it seems like just about every other post has something bad to say about Lucas. I know it is a general stereotype that we OT.com folks are all a bunch of Lucas bashers, but this is just getting old.

Sorry, gethedgical, this post really was not aimed directly at you, hope you don't feel like it is.

Anyway, that is a cool picture. Your thread didn't really deserve this post, I just felt like speaking my mind.

Let us not forget that this is still the guy who invented the stories we have enjoyed so much. Even though much of what SW has become today has been through the hard work of those around him, the fact of the matter is, no Lucas, no Star Wars. It sucks that the guy hates his fans so much that he doesn't even care to give them the actual movies that made them fans in the first place. It sucks he seems to have come to the conclusion that he is the greatest story teller who ever lived and takes full credit for the work of others, as well as makes changes to their contributions to the whole simply because he likes it better done differently. And it sucks that he has had the chance to make three really awesome movies with a pretty much endless budget and yet only managed to make the OT. I love to make fun of the guy as much as the next guy. I don't have a whole lot of respect for the guy like I used to. He used to seem like a cool film making rebel, doing things his own way and bucking the system. The system sucks, so that is awesome, but in the end he became worse than the system.

Yes, all these things suck. But seriously, there is no reason to hate the guy, to feel disappointed in him yes, but hate is too much. He hasn't really taken anything away from you, you still have the same Star Wars you have always had, unfortunately it is in an outdated format and quality, but you still have it.

Yeah, picked it up when I was in Las Vegas a while back. I was able to talk my wife into going on the Star Trek Experience with me (hey, how about that, I am back on topic! Talking about a silly Gimmicky 3D show/ride), it was incredibly lame, I loved it. One of the cheapest and most worthwhile things in the giftshop were the plush tribbles, so I got one. The other thing that had me tempted where the six packs of Romulan Ale (beer with blue dye), but I decided to be contend with just the tribble.

In 2-3 business days my lovely little headcrab along with a Black Mesa coffee mug will be on their way to my mail box.

Hmm, crappiness, not sure I've noticed that aspect of anime yet. :)

Just different tastes. It is not that I don't care to explain myself, I am not sure exactly what it is, I just don't enjoy it. bkev hit the nail on the head when he said that it is a niche. I have nothing against people who like it, like I said many of my friends do. In fact, since so many of my friends liked it so much, I used to try really hard to like it. I was convinced that somewhere out there existed something I'd like, but I have still yet to find any.

My friend gave me a copy of Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for the PS2. He is not really a DZB fan or huge anime fan either, but for some reason he was really into these Tenkaichi games, and since he wanted someone to play against he got me a copy, in hopes that I would play it enough to get good at it and provide him with a decent challenge.

So, I spent some time playing this game, I actually liked it, it was pretty fun. Not a lot of lasting appeal though. After playing it quite a bit and kind of getting into the storylines, I decided I ought to check out some DBZ, so I borrowed a few episodes from another friend who had a pretty big DBZ collection, he carefully selected some episodes he felt could entertian a new comer to the DBZ universe. Long story short, I didn't make it past the first 15 minutes before turning it off (which I had wanted to do 5 minutes in) and picking up my PS2 controller to play some more Budokai Tenkaichi 2.

Don't get me wrong, I am not an anime hater, I have nothing against it. Just isn't my thing.

When they used Link, the Spawn, and the guy fron Tekken, they put them all on the box. It makes perfect sense. A SW fan who would not normally buy Soul Calibur sees Vader or Yoda on the box and decides to add it to his collection. I know a few Zelda fans who bought the old GC version for no other reason than the fact that it had Link in it. It also makes for advertisment for the Force Unleashed. As long as you are not ashamed to whore out your characters, and GL certianly isn't, everybody wins in a situation like this.

Unless something really big happens in the next 10 episodes of BSG that make some of the outlandish things in that trailer make sense, I couldn't care less about this.

Since it is a prequel series to BSG, the events of BSG could do very little to make it make sense.

I was slightly disappointed when I had heard they shelfed Caprica, and I was slightly excited when I heard that it was off the shelf. I am not sure about the trailer, but from the premise of the show I read sometime ago, it seems like it will be pretty interesting. However, I do not see it filling any voids caused by the loss of BSG. For me BSG was at its best during battle scenes and dog fights, and at its lowest during the "elevator" episodes, which seem to have become very frequent over the corse of seasn three. I forsee Caprica being one big "elevator" episode of a series. Which is kind of the point since they were looking for a way to keep BSG's fans with a lower budget spin-off.

I am looking forward to seeing this, but I am not expecting greatness, nor a second season.

Crappiness mostly.

Ah, you mentioned, Princess Monoke and Spirited Away, those are too others that friends of mine have said I need to see before dismissing anime, didn't watch either one the whole way through, but I hated what I did watch. Like I said, it is not that I haven't given anime a chance, I just really don't like it. I don't know why, I just don't get into it. I would rather spend my time with other forms of entertianment.

Do you think the PT will ever be remade that gives justice to the series?
Time

Quite an imagination.

Anyway, I hope none of it comes true. Sounds like any true film fan's worst nightmare. Movie theaters in turmoil, lots of remakes, iTunes becomes the prefered method of movie going to people everywhere.

If such a dark and gloomy future does become a reality, I highly doubt anybody would be rooting for the remake of three overly crappy movies from the late nineties/early zeros. And I certianly doubt they would be the savior's of the movie going experience.

I can honestly and wholeheartedly say the only thing I wish Lucas had done differently would have been to leave the episode numbers out of the original trilogy. Starting with episode IV makes it hard to forget there are three missing pieces. If they were just simply Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi sans the episode numbers, people might be able to simply forget about the prequels and let Star Wars live out its existence as an above average trilogy of movies from the 70s and 80s that stand perfectly fine on their own. No more beating of dead horses.
