Therefore, pressure from the Rebellion would mean nothing!

I didn't mean diplomatic pressure, I mean "aggressive negotiation" type pressure. Think of the scene where Leia enters while everyone is sleeping, I imagine that, only a squad of about 10 or 15 guys with big guns who, once everyone wakes up and realizes what is going on, start blasting through pounds of alien flesh on their way to Jabba's beautiful commemorative Han Solo collector's idem. Luke could have gone with them just for fun so he could knock people around with his lightsabre.

That made me laugh really hard.

I guess the rational behind the "You will deliver Han Solo and the Wookie to me" was that they were making it look like Chewie got captured by Bossh (or whoever Leia was disguised as), so as far as Jabba knew, Chewie came into his possession the same way Han did, via purchase from a bounty hunter.

Honestly, Jabba's forces in his palace were pretty primitive, some weirdos standing around with blaster pistols on their belts, but the main guards are obese mutant hogs with "vibro axes" with I guess having the ability to vibrate makes them just that much deadlier than your run of the mill axes, but it still seems like once they had confirmation that Han was just hanging around as a decoration in Jabba's place that Leia could have pulled some strings and had a highly trained and heavily armed squad of Rebel soldiers infiltrate the palace and pull him out of there while probably leaving far less bodies lying around than Luke ended up doing.

Han is the guy who rescued the princess and helped blow up the Death Star, only to end up saving the princess again and ends up getting captured in the process. Seems like the Alliance would be willing to lend a few guys to securing his rescue.

The rescue in ROTJ has always been incredible unbelievable and made no sense at all. The Jabba palace bit of the movie is probably one of the worst bits of the OT IMHO. But the Rancor battle, the scene with Luke slashing up everyone on the barge, the original sarlacc, and Leia choking Jabba to Death in her metal bikini all make up for it... mostly.

Though I must say, there is nothing in the entirety of ROTJ that makes it worth sitting through Jedi Rocks for, NOTHING!

I can't BELIEVE this guy!? What an A**HOLE!!!! ROTJ Review
Time

The guy is a bit more uptight than he needs to be, but I can understand where he is coming from. Obviously he feels that film should be used to express great drama and teach people about life. Ebert really expresses my exact feelings on the greatness of film as an art form by saying that essentially every film is a special effect, it is not real it is a dream. In real life all sorts of horrible stuff can happen to us, and all sorts of great thing can happen to us, but some things can only happen through the magic of film. It is fun to imagine far off worlds that are very different from our own, and honestly, I think a lot more can be learned about life from fantasy stories like Homer's Odyssey, The Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and other works of fantasy than can be learned from more serious true to life stories. Fantasy can be a hyperbolic and magnified way of expressing and teaching very true things about life. But then again, I grew up with this crap making me certianly dumber than I need to be.

Watching this video reminded me of an essay written by C.S. Lewis about adults with childish tastes. Lewis was a very strong believer in fantasy stories and fairy tales. If he would have been born a few years later, or lived long enough to see it, I have a feeling Lewis would have been a huge advocate of Star Wars, even if he had only ever read the novel and never seen the film. I really like that, because her is a learned Oxford professor, in a world where science fiction is considered children's fare, and the guy considers the worls of Juels Vern and H.G. Wells to be on the same level of story telling as Charles Dickens and other "more serious writers".

Clone wars on cartoon freakin' network
Time

Umm, no, A New Hope was NOT a kid's film. Maybe you were a kid when you saw it, and it took years for the deeper meanings to dawn on you, but that was not the case for many people who saw the films back in 1977 and after. Many people were NOT kids when they saw it, and they never would have guest it was a kids film.

Yes, Star Wars was mostly family friendly, we have both the use of the words "damn" and "hell" thrown in there, which are not kid's movie words. We have a bloody severed arm, not kid's movie stuff, we also have people getting choked to death. SW was a pretty kid friendly movie, and kids absolutely loved it, but so did adults.

I hope you are not saying the Genndy cartoon resembled the OT, there was really no resembalance. The cartoon was clearly for kids.

problem is, it makes star wars seem like a kid film. its more mature then that!

I think the "Star Wars is more mature than that" argument was lost with all the fart jokes in Episode I. The PT was most certianly aimed at younger audiences, with a few akward exceptions like the murdering of kids and burning flesh. But this Clone Wars series is without a doubt aimed at kids, nothing about it looks mature to me. It would be an insult to the other shows on adult swim and to the people who watch adult swim for this to be on there. With the PT we could still try to pretend that they were blatant kids movies, but I am afraid you can't do that with Clone Wars, they are very tiny bopper, all the way from the animation to the jokes.

The 2008 '<strong>The Clone Wars</strong>' animated theatrical movie - a general discussion thread
Time

I don't think people should appreciate the prequels more, as it is I think they get way more credit than they deserve. Anyone who is honest with themselves will realize that the prequel trilogy consists of three awful films riding on the name Star Wars. Without that SW attached to the titles, The Phantom Menace wouldn't have gotten any sequels...

Not everyone hates the prequels, a lot of people like them, and that is fine by me. I didn't feel the story was amazing, I thought the story sucked through and through. I simply don't enjoy them at all, I get about as much enjoyment out of them as I get from watching day time TV (and I absolutely f ing hate day time TV...) I don't feel like I should appreciate them more, and I never will appreciate them, I dislike them, plain and simple. There are others like me that feel the same way. They really are not good films, but it is just dandy that some people really like them.

You also have to keep in mind that some of us waited for these for close to 20 years, even though most fans didn't expect them to be as good as the OT, they were expecting something slightly not as bad as what we got. This is a factor that adds to some of our dislikes of the film, also as Gaffer pointed out, not only did these films fall about a billion miles short of expectation, but since they somehow managed not to fit with the OT very well, we end up getting revised version of the OT that have been molded to fit the akward hole the PT left for them. Not only where the films changed, which is something I am prefectly fine with, doesn't bother me a bit, but then the originals are not availble and we are told to get the VHS tapes if we really want them so badly, but they will never be on DVD. Then we finally we do get them on DVD, they are nearly on watchable on many modern TVs. Just to let you know where some people are coming from, and why the quality of the PT is such an insult to them.

a possible Thank You letter to Lucas
Time

Wait until after the first season at least. Like Hotrod said, that trailer for The Phantom Menace was fantastic, it gave me chills the first time I saw it it was so cool. Then I paid money for a ticket and...

As for Janskeets TF.N comment. Come on man, there is no need for that, that is what sets us a cut above the rest. You and I can express our dislike for GL, LFL, the SE, the PT, the vast majority of DVD releases, and the poor quality of releases all we want here without getting flamed or even band. We don't want to spin it the other way around and become mirror opposites of the other places by indimidating anyone who likes the PT. I have great respect for people enjoy the PT and who have an optomistic outlook on the future of SW, I don't have to share that optomism, but I don't have to make comments to make them feel unwelcome either. Not trying to get on you buddy, just something to think about.

Look what I got for 25 cents! (a.k.a. Star Wars bargains)
Time

Oh yeah, now I remember back around 1996 or so, I went to Shopko (kind of like Wal-Mart back in the pre-Super Wal-Mart days) and just happened to wander into the toy section where they were clearancing off some of their SW toys, including their X-Wing fighters which were going for six bucks each!!! I had one of the old white ones from the eighties but I had been hard on it over the years and broke off the canopy and eventually the s-foils stopped working. So I bought three of these X-Wings for less than the retail price of one. Still have them in the box and unopened packed away somewhere. For some reason that store would regularly clearance out many of their toys, so I'd keep returning. I got many other deals from them. I think I got a Naboo fighter for under ten bucks as well. I also bought a large number of various figures for around $2 each from them over the years. I bought SW Monopoly from them for $5. I don't even remember all the stuff I bought from that place, it has all been packed away and unlooked at for years.

Wow, that was an amazing deal. I used to go to thrift stores to browse through their junk, and every now and then I'd find a treasure. I can't really remember any deals I have gotten on SW stuff though. Back in the early ninties I used to get bags full of SW action figures for about $1.99. Most of them were pretty loose in the limbs and where missing every single accessory. I found some SW ships back then too, but they too were really stripped down, still was happy to find them though.

Lately it seems that the thrift stores in my area go nuts with anything that they think might be of some value. For example, they usually sell hard cover books for $2 each, but they get a hard cover Harry Potter or some other currently popular book, they slap $9 bucks on the thing. Since Star Wars is pretty big, anything they recongnize as SW, they tend to charge a lot for.

I've seen them throw close to $10 dollars on old mid ninties SW games in cracked jewel cases. I have even seen them charge $2 for old AOL Free Trial! discs.

Wow, can't believe we wont be hearing that voice anymore...

This guy had one of the coolest jobs ever. I'd love to spend all day making recordings and getting paid for it.

This is a really cool short on him,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QPMvj_xejg

It is awesome that he'd sometimes record voice mail messages for people. Now, I really wish I'd sent him a request... but as I don't even own a telephone, it wouldn't have done me any good.

R.I.P Don, I'll miss hearing your voice, quite literally, everywhere.

Wow, this thread did a 180.

Between the original music, the Y-Wings, and the IG-88 style battle droids, that trailer was fun to watch. And now that they are not expecting you to pay 10 bucks to see it, I feel this isn't going to be the worse thing that ever happened to SW.

Someone complained about the "that was impressive" part, that part cracked me up, that is what I have always wanted to do to those stupid droids.

Very well, I too will consider the possiblility a departing with one of my testicles for this as well. Maybe we can start a campaign like they did for a second season of Jericho where everybody sent in peanuts, or how people sent penciles to the studios in order to encourage them to end the Writer's Strike by giving them what they wanted.

Perhaps, if enough of us send in disembodied testicles to our pal George, he'll hand the rights over to Del Torro under the condition he offers a minor role to Bruce Campbell, and get his people to work on remastering the OOT for a Blu-ray release. I think this could work. For the first time in years I see a glimer of hope for seeing a true release of the OOT!

Okay, come on, a remake of The Phantom Menace with Guillermo del Toro in the director's chair! How awesome would that be?!

Of course, we might as well also put a clause in said petition requiring Bruce Campbell to be on the Jedi Council.

Man, those would be two of the most amazing things. In a perfect world...

Oh I see.  So myself and my 10 friends will be the only OOT fans left in 40 years?  I doubt that.

No way man, only nine of your friends (wow, this is kind of like the JWs and the 144,000), I am a young whippersnapper and I fully intend to still be around in 40 years, and if there is still no true release of the OOT, I will still be disappointed about that 40 years from now.

Not going to read them again, however, when I see some hype about the new outstanding film to DVD or Blu-ray transfers for download or trade that make any need for an official release nonexistent, then I'll become a believer. Until then, I still feel no hope is to be found in this matter.

If you find some way to make it happen though, I will very impressed and grateful.

Yeah, it really is THAT bad and worse. Even after disliking Forever to a very severe degree, disliking the idea of George Clooney as Batman to an even more severe degree, and being terrified at the idea of Arnold as Mr. Freeze, some friends of mine managed to talk me in to going to see B&R together opening week... haven't seen it since, but I still shudder when I think about it.

Shit may be shit no matter how old you are, but there are some movies I loved when I was a kid, only to watch them again as a grown up and think, "How the hell did I ever think this was cool?" You have to keep in mind Sean, that many of us were much older than 7 when B&R came out. Had I been seven when it came out, I can imagine that I might possibly have liked it.

Doing it yourself worked well enough with the jump from laserdisc to DVD, but don't count on LD transfers looking worth much when converted to Blu-ray, and beyond LD, I am not sure what source you are going to use for doing it yourself. No matter how you spin it, unofficial or official releases, LD is currently the top quality OOT we have to work with.

The battle of Yavin.
Time

Small groups would have been suicide, strength in numbers. They were clearly out numbered by the TIEs, wouldn't take long for them to pick off small groups. Also would have been futile for them to turn around and engage the fighters, they would have endless scores of TIEs to deal with, they could never take them all out, it would just be a matter of time before each X-Wing bit the dust while wasting time looping around and chasing down and dodging TIEs.

The point was to get to the exhust port and shove some torpedoes down its throat. It wasn't that they were just letting themselves get picked off, they were fighting back, but they had to stay on their course or they would be going nowhere only to die in the process.

The stratedgy was very clear, get to the exhust port, stay low and avoid the turbo lasers, they knew it was likely they would have to deal with fighters, the stratedgy was evade, not engage. X-Wings and Y-Wings both have excellent shields, but when you are looking at one Rebel fighter for every ten or so Imperial fighters, there is just really no way to fight back. Evasion was the only hope to make it to the target intact.
