I’m not a fan of Rey’s new Palpatine lineage (I really liked Rey Nobody) but I don’t think the common complaint that it’s a copy of Luke’s lineage twist is valid.

Luke struggles with learning his dark heritage, but overcomes it and helps Anakin redeem himself

Rey struggles with learning her dark heritage, but overcomes it and ends Palpatine permanently, then redeeming the bloodline by taking on the Skywalker name

I think there’s a lot of nice stuff that comes out of Rey Palpatine too. Things like how Palpatine tried to create a dyad of darkness with Anakin but couldn’t, and then their grandchild form a dyad of light. Or how Palpatine took a Skywalker’s name away when they chose the dark, and later a Palpatine took the Skywalker name when they chose the light.

FWIW I really liked Rey Nobody but would’ve been cool with Rey Kenobi. I love that she takes the Skywalker name tho

I Just wanted to say, Hal, jonh, and all who participated a lot in this edit. Guys, you are amazing. You did such amazing and creative work. It’s what this fandom should be about: sharing the SW world together in a positive, productive way. It’s just incredible, how you all basically remade and SAVED the last chapter of the saga we all love.
Hal, you basically made this movie watchable. When I left the theater in December, i was devastated. I waited So many years for TROS and I truly believed in this movie… and I was so disappointed.

My thoughts exactly. The movie has gone from nearly ruining the franchise for me to being an ending I truly enjoy watching. Are there still gripes I have with the original that can’t be fixed? Of course. But I am truly grateful for the work we’ve done and I hope we can see it truly finished with the crackling saber 😃

I’ll be basing my edit off of Hal’s (only a few changes to it really) which includes numerous changes for this scene: Leia’s purple lightsaber, Anakin’s crackling lightsaber, and the Force ghosts behind Rey. I don’t know if Movies Remastered plans on editing that with red lightning or the original film, but I think alongside the other edits it would get messy looking and overdone with red.

The thing is though I love the red lightning, especially for when Palpatine blasts the entire fleet with it.

I’ll probably just use the red lightning for the fleet-frying scene and then back to blue for him against Rey, I have no issue headcanoning it as only being red because of the insane power to nuke a fleet (juiced up on the dyad) vs blue for just attacking a single person as we’ve always seen.

Is anyone working on the green mist?

What I took out of RoS which I really liked the idea of was how it explained Palpatines “stike me down” lines both in RoS and return of the jedi. I like to think that meant that if Luke struck him down in return of the jedi with anger he would of possessed Luke the same way Rey would of been possessed if she stuck him down in RoS through the sith ritual.

I realize that doesn’t literally make a ton of sense given Palpatine’s ambition and ruling an empire, but it makes sense in the context of the morality tale that the original trilogy was. This added motivation means there’s a reason for Luke to resist temptation other than showing poise and maturity in the face of evil.

I think it can work both ways at the same time. Luke doesn’t know about the spirit transfer so he is still resisting darkness solely to not corrupt, while it’s also really cool from a lore perspective as a viewer. Plus like we’ve talked about it adds depth to Vader in this scene by knowing that the gears of redemption are continuing to turn for his son.

Last Jedi used Sidious and Rise of Skywalker used Palpatine based on the desire of one filmmaker to tie into the entire saga, and the other to just make a sequel to his film from four years prior and tie into his childhood toys.

I’m inclined to agree. I looooveeee TLJ and man… JJ just worships the OT 😕

The reason is that this wasn’t how Sith worked back then. This is perhaps the single good thing TROS did in making the Sith spirit canon, and I’d gladly take a retcon that improved the OT even if it makes the PT a little more silly.

I don’t think I understand this- by Sith spirit do you mean the idea that literally every spirit had transferred down the line and they were “all the Sith” inside Palpatine that he mentioned? I thought the general assumption was this wasn’t literal

But then why does Palpatine seem to gloat as he describes Darth Plagueis not being able to save himself from being killed? Shouldn’t he just be Plagueis?

Maybe because Palps killed him in his sleep and the person being killed needs to consciously transfer their spirit to a new host?

Well that confuses it a bit more- if the original point is the case, would all the Sith have built up in Plagueis only for Palpatine to not take them?

I simply saw it as Palpatine saying all of the Sith had figuratively led up to him, but he was just trying to use the transfer-power with Luke and then Rey (or Kylo) to get into a younger, healthier body.

I assumed that Palps meant that the spirits of all the Sith literally resided within him, otherwise he would have some new power that previous Sith did not have when he tried to transfer his consciousness to a new body. It would be weird to say that he was the first Sith to figure this out when this theory of spirit succession fits so well into the otherwise bizarre practice of the Rule of Two.

I think that makes some sense in the context of the movie, but not in full. The Sith are built on selfishness and the idea of living your entire life to continue building power for a future Sith contradicts that.

I thought the point of the Rule of Two was that Bane’s goal was for the cycle to eventually create the perfect Sith who would destroy the Jedi- Palpatine thought he was this perfect Sith and did almost succeed in destroying the Jedi.

Honestly now that I think about it, the Rule of Two makes no sense in the context of what the Sith believe

I really like it too, it retcons ROTJ nicely. Instead of seeing it as Vader protecting Palpatine, I now see it as Vader protecting his son

It’s instant-gratification social media in general. People have self-inflicted ADD and do not have the time to actually digest the latest media, they just want quick explanations and then forget about it 48 hours later. It’s why READING is becoming a problem in society as people can barely focus on a book, much less an article–notice how articles come with “5 min read / 10 min read” at the top nowadays?

Absolutely, people are completely losing any attention span. I’ve shown two different friends the saga for the first time recently and both of them couldn’t watch the movies for more than a couple minutes max without looking at their phones constantly.

And we can play the ageist game of “back in my day…” or whatever. That’s irrelevant. The purpose of the scene is that Palpatine gets rejuvenated. If he goes beyond rejuvenation to more powerful than before, his motives for the rest of the film no longer make sense. It’s always been implied Palpatine was stronger than he let on in other films, and he didn’t do the crazy antics like he does with the fleet, because he never needed to and it would go against his goals in those films.

What? The implication was already that he was insanely more powerful than before in the original cut- see him fry an entire fleet of ships from the ground. Also how does his goal change? Once he saps the Dyad power he just wants Rey/Ben dead so he can rule the galaxy.

Also, I’d make sure every time he uses his Sith Lightning is red. So both when he’s firing it at the fleet and when he’s shooting it at Rey. Otherwise it’d just get confusing.

Oh yeah it would def have to be red the entire time.

Also, has it been already suggested to making the Sith Eternal Acolytes chant “Sidious” instead of “Palpatine” (them calling him by his Sith name makes more sense)?

I wasn’t even aware they were chanting actual words, but I’d be down for it to be Sidious.

I have my problems with TROS, but none of them can be solved via the power of fanediting, so minor changes like Leia having a purple saber, Palpatine red lightning, and the Knights of Ren actually having dialogue go a long way in giving me more enjoyment. But to each his own I guess. I should work on a minimalist cut of TROS that only makes minor tweaks and changes…

Well let’s hope someone with the ability will come through 😉

More of the same visual signifies more power. New visual suggests new power.

What kind of logic is that?? It’s still obviously force lighting, and given that Palpatine was rejuvenated by the Dyad, the red lightning is apart of that. It’s just more powerful force lightning. What makes it red? The force! It’s Star Wars! It’s really not hard at all. I sound like a broken record but you’re overthinking this way too much.

Exactly! And it’s Star Wars, so applying real world logic like “Red lightning doesn’t exist” makes no sense. The first time Palpatine used Force lightning after sapping the Dyad power was his insane blast into the fleet- the audience goes “woah!” and assumes it’s extra-powerful from the Dyad (although the static-y atmosphere definitely helped boost it). The same assumption plays out if it’s also red lighting, and the audience thinks “woah!” but even more now lol.
