Incredible work jonh! I agree that Ben is too large but that’s the only possible issue I see

Here’s a reference image I put together to show Kylo’s flowing hair and adjusted lighting to match Luke and Leia.

Looks pretty good! Aside from Ben looking confused lol
All good! No need to apologise. If people still believe it’s worth attempting then someone more skilled than me can try it out. 👍
+1 to being interested in seeing the castle 😃
I think his face needs to be a little less transparent and his hair needs a little more fluff. Besides that, great work!
+100 the face is hard to make out and his hair looks… flat and wet? Appreciate the edit though 😃
The norm seems to be that Jedi continue to, or tend to, manifest as they appeared when they died. I’m sure this is not a requirement, but a convention. And one has to venture into alternate versions of the films to break this norm (04SE or subsequent).
I’d rather they had filmed Hayden doing something substanative than used CGI to recreate Shaw. However, since they didn’t and using CGI is necessary to get either of them, I think Shaw fits better. Otherwise it’s three old men and Hayden. Shaw is the only Anakin ghost for me in ROTJ, and so it would seem to fit naturally for TROS.
That being said, I’m content with Hayden’s Anakin as he currently appears in jonh’s clip if Shaw doesn’t quite pan out.
I absolutely LOVE Hayden replacing Shaw in ROTJ. IMO it means nothing to see this person we have never seen before whereas it’s so, so satisfying to see the Anakin we know and love reunited with his old masters in the light side, looking upon his son and daughter. Even better seeing him return in jonh’s incredible work! If only he had appeared to Ben in the original movie 😕 (Or if he was with his family at the edit’s end 😉 )
Is there anywhere in the movie people have inserted the music from the final TROS trailer?

Especially the part that kicks in at 1:25… it’s so good. Gives me chills everytime! Would love to see it in the actual film somewhere
“Kylo wants the girl alive, kill the rest” would make much more sense at that point in the story. It doesn’t spoil the “reveal”, it works with what Kylo says in Passana, “I don’t want to have to kill you”, and it would be an opportunity to show Kylo’s bond with his Knights, as he trusts them enough to tell them his real plan, while he tells the people at the board room they’re going “hunting for the scavenger”. This would add more tragedy to their eventual duel, giving it a real sense of betrayal.
“Palpatine wants the girl alive” works to the opposite effect, making it seem the KoR are privy to more information than Kylo, since he believes Palpatine wants her dead, so it makes it seem like they had a direct link to Palpatine and were working on their own, always ready or planning to turn on Kylo. I don’t like this personally, we’ve seen enough bad guys plotting to betray their Masters, it would be more interesting to have the Leader betray his Knights, a bittersweet tragedy that results from his turn to the light.
Damn, really good points. +1
Well, Anjohan, I’ll welcome your thoughts once you see the whole thing! Thanks for posting.
And, smpearce1981, your post is entirely reasonable and correct. The TIE thing doesn’t bother me per se, but it was an opportunity to make a change that steered clear of what feels like an incongruity. Otherwise we’d never make changes like this and always defer to and accept official explanations.
Or we could all pretend someone had bothered to write the following scene for the actual movie:-
Ben searched the broken hanger for a ship. Any ship. All he needed was to get off the planet. He’d worry about how he got to Exegol later.
He tried two ships. First an old shuttle, but it’s power core was smashed beyond repair. Second an old TIE. To his disbelief it powered up immediately. And it had a hyperdrive! What was this? Some sort of prototype? What were the odds!
Ben didn’t waste any time questioning it. He’d learnt that from his father.
He attributed it to the will of the force and moved on, he didn’t need distractions right now. He needed to get back in the fight. He hit the controls and the TIE departed the twisted hanger.
As he entered the atmosphere, he laid in the co-ordinates for Exegol.
‘I’m coming Rey’ he said to himself as he waited for the navi-computer to finish plotting it’s course.
The lights signalled. He was ready. But for a split second before he hit the jump, he paused and once again heard the words of his old man echo through his subconscious. ‘Punch it!’
Ben’s caught his lips moving in synchronisation with the memory. As the star field began to wrap itself around the ship, he smiled. He suddenly felt a lot like his old self…
Fade out.
That’s so good. Wish we had seen it / read it in the novelization
That’s a reasonable idea, but my issue within the SW films in their own Platonic realm is that ANH makes a point about TIEs not having hyperdrives, so I’d prefer having something distinct that we do know to have them.
Because if a “well, technically” answer works, the question was invalid.
I don’t understand this point though. Is technically not allowed to progress over 40 years?
I’m just going to add my voice to the “Don’t mess with the original canon lore too much” crowd, as I’d actually like to show this cut to future fans who will ultimately be more satisfied with it as a valid alternative. It’s pretty darn good as it is right now. I’m already sad about the loss of the Episode III line, but I understand why you cut it. Changing the vats of Snoke Clones to Sheev clones is harmless enough as one would expect to see failed Sheev bodies in the same lab somewhere anyway.
Changing Kef Bir to the forest moon is also a small stretch, but I understand why you did it too and it’s easy enough for the casual viewer to overlook. No one who wants to nitpick will care about the color of Leia’s saber, and the purple looks pretty neat.
Outside of those changes, there’s a lot I like about this cut so far. Preserve the lore where you can so I can share it among others without big canon-debates, while only fixing the film’s real problems.
+1 I like most changes, but I think I’ll be adding the ROTS line back in and the Kef Bir -> Endor change, while I like it, changes canon too much for me so I’ll reverse it
Those lines actually were recorded, using impersonators. They were just buried deep in the audio mix to avoid standing out from the rest of the fleet dialogue.
Really? The only one I’ve noticed standing out was the Inferno Squad one. Are the files available somewhere? I’d like to make Kaz stick out too
Just learned that Christopher Sean (the voice actor for Kaz in Resistance) has a Cameo account where you can pay $30 for him to record any video/message. Given that his ship and a few others from the show were created for TROS but unused and the novelization included him along with a line of dialogue, would anyone be interested in group-funding him to record the line for the edit? Inferno Squad was included so I figure there will also be interest in this. The novelization goes:
“Zay Versio with Inferno Squad, standing by. Look at all these ships!”
“Fireball, here. Hi everyone!”
“Cut the chatter, Kaz,” a deep voice responded.
Given how short the line is I’m not sure if enough people would be interested in chipping in a bit so maybe the line could also be spliced together from show dialogue? Along with Yeager’s line in response.
Just want to see Resistance included 😃

Sheev seems genuinely surprised Kylo and Rey are a dyad in the force, yet Snoke says he bridged their minds and seems to have a better grasp of their force link then “The Senate”.
Pretty sure Snoke was just lying about that
By the canon of this cut, she heard Anakin’s voice and felt a connection with him during the fight against Palpatine, so I think it’s something you could get away with if done tastefully.
Plus, he literally endorses her in a sort of psuedo-chosen one way, so as controversial as it is, his connections to her keeps the prophesy more relevant while still letting fans decide for themselves who precisely the chosen one could be (as there are still different interpretations out there, when it could be argued that the chosen one is the entire family line from him onwards, of which Rey is adopted into).
+1000
Just seeking some clarification after watching the newest workprint (which is exceptional). Is there still a plan for Ben to be incorporated as a force ghost with Luke and Leia at the end of the film? I think this is an absolute must in my opinion. I had already seen a few mockups on youtube with him inserted. Is anyone in particular working on this or willing to take it up? I wish I had the skills to pull off such an endeavor, but no doubt in my mind the talent on here can pull if off for sure! Keep up the great work everyone and thanks for everything Hal.
+1000 extremely vital. While we’re at it, I’d LOVE to see Anakin with those three too. The Skywalker family 😃
I think the rambling is just as pointless as “power converters” or “moister vaporators” or “speaking boche” or “thermal oscillator” or “compressor adding stress on the hyperdrive” or “GIVE ME THE HYDROSPANER!”
When audiences see the original film they see the Falcon flying into different parts of space rabidly and they hadn’t seen that before (set aside that it’s stupid). The question is then “what is that??”
Answer in the film and canon; Lightspeed skipping
When watching the film now with Lightspeed skipping removed we see the falcon punch through a solid object while moving into hyperspace, something we have never seen before.
Question. “Didn’t the last time we see a ship fly into something at Lightspeed it destroy almost a whole fleet? Why doesn’t this maneuver destroy the falcon?Answer: “you Lightspeed skipped? You can’t Lightspeed skip the Falcon!”
The audience now knows that the maneuver Poe and company did by punching threw the ice wall is different and a risky maneuver with an in-universe name. With a simple line of technobabble the question is settled. Without it, the question remains, “why were they able to punch through the ice wall?”
If we had not seen the act of Lightspeed skipping before, if we didn’t have that context, I don’t think that line would be in contention at all.
I understand everyone’s reasoning, I’m sorry that I’m harping on it I mean no offense, just want to explain my thinking. The added bonus is retaining one of the very few interactions we have between Finn and Rey.
+1
Hal, I know this is a long shot but would you consider rendering a version of your final edit with that Lightspeed skip conversation intact? I could host it on my own google drive since I understand space is getting low on yours?
+1
That’s what I’ve been thinking about a lot. I don’t have the hardware or the software to try to add things back into the edit when it’s completed that didn’t bother me and I think are necessary (pretty much just the Lightspeed skipping conversation)
Honestly though I think if you showed the scene with a reference to Lightspeed skipping to anyone who hasn’t seen the movie before they wouldn’t think it was anything bother than what they saw
How did I forget about adding the lightspeed skipping scene back in? Lol, it’s one of my favorite scenes in the movie
Just realized that since I’m planning on adding a few things back in that were cut (Rey and Finn’s chat about Poe at the start, Rey holding the dagger to see the Throne Room location, etc.) I’m going to need to match them in color correction. How would I do that on my own? I’m pretty inexperienced in video editing
Here’s an old test from the last time we hashed this out, using the music intended for TFA that was replaced with Burning Homestead:
I even tried to see if it could be put back into that moment in TFA, but it would affect sync in order to do and I am not willing to go through all that it would take to do another update to that project. Plus not everyone watching will have the whole 9000 setup.
Gotta be honest that doesn’t fit the scene IMO
There’s not a problem with the music chosen for that scene, what is a bit irking to some is that immediately after it plays it plays again.
Exactly- Very fitting for the Rey and the Force ghosts, not fitting for rocks crushing Sith loyalists and Star Destroyers blowing up
Another solution (because Burning Homestead admittely sounds epic) could be changing the music that plays over the destruction of the Sith temple - as I said before, it’s already canned music from another movie.
^ Good idea. I just rewatched this scene in the workprint and while the music cue is very fitting for the Force ghosts arriving, it’s just tiring/meaningless having it play again right after Palpatine dies.
Personally I don’t think there’s any music that could be more fitting than Burning Homestead for all of the Force ghosts returning in one final climax to help destroy Palpatine. It’s basically the Force theme- the perfect choice!
And while the opening straight to Mustafar is cleaner and paced better, I’d stick with keeping Mustafar. I love the idea of Kylo going there and will take any version of it even if it’s messy

I think the full de-blue is too much, but the 50% version looks nice. It fits more with my expectations of what a Force Ghost should look like.
Fully agreed- 50% deblue + LUT is by far the best. It’s the perfect blend between looking “real” but still having that slight blue glow… and you’re so right haha, the original looks even more ridiculous now
De-blue Luke is cool but too de-blued IMO. In most scenes, he looks like he’s actually physically there and just glowing white. Really good edit though
