LOTR
Time
In many cases (not in the case of LOTR), it's intentionally planned for the first movie to be able to stand alone just in case it fails and they cannot release any further movies. In other cases, sequels may not have been intended in the first place so the first movie is really able to stand alone.

Star Wars. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Scream. Alien (okay, so it's really a quadrilogy. Sue me). Et al.

See where I'm going?

It's been upgraded to a 9.0. For those who want some sort of relative comparison... the San Francisco quake in 1989 during the World Series only measured a 7.1.

Two waves hit the city of Phuket. The first was a large splash up of water likened to a major ocean swell. The second was the big wave and it hit about two hours after the first one. I think the death toll is over 11,000 now.

Not likely. An official reissue poster might have a new date. But the likelihood of ever seeing LFL "reissue" posters, I would think, is pretty slim. So anything else you see out there is a copy of the original. So it would contain the original copyright date and all that jazz. We did have a site linked here some time ago that gave a checklist of things to look out for to determine if a poster is real or a copy. That site has long since been relegated to Internet oblivion.

Not a snowball's chance in hell. Armageddon is a fun movie, but has so many scientific holes in it. So there is the complete lack of credibility.

Top Gun has the love story from hell in it. I hate everything about the whole Tom Cruise/Kelly McGillis love story and cannot watch anything even remotely related to it (save for Goose's "you know... the bird" bit while Cruise is flirting with her in training). Otherwise, no. The fighting sequences are cool, no question. But, in this movie, that is not enough for me.

Black Hawk Down just has some of the greatest action sequences I've seen. The movie starts strong and never lets up throughout. Plus, I cannot recall any cheesy effects scenes in it at all. And I've heard from people who have been involved in similar situations that it's very realistic. What I find to be the weirdest thing about it is that BHD is a movie in which it ranges from "very difficult" to "nearly impossible" to identify one character versus another, yet you feel a sort of sympathy for these characters that you normally cannot feel for characters in any other Bruckheimer film.

On the topic of collectibles, a coworker just walked in my office and put a box Sigma ROTJ Biker Scout coffee mug on it. It's an original box (albeit a little beat up), the mug may need some cleaning, but it still has the original swingtag in excellent condition. He said he's had it laying around for a while after finding it some years back at a garage sale. Said I can just have it because he knows I would like it. It's copyrighted 1983.

Jerry Bruckheimer is not usually known for quality in films. However, that is a completely different story with his TV shows. When you watch a Bruckheimer flick, it's usually just thrills, chills, and visual effects. No high quality acting, emotion, or writing is typically involved in his movies. I can't think of too many Bruckheimer films that have high quality acting, emotion, and writing to be honest.

The only exceptions I can come up with are Pirates of the Caribbean (and even that still wasn't 100% in the acting category - Orlando Bloom leaves a lot to be desired), Veronica Guerin, and Black Hawk Down. And both were recognized very highly for how well done they were.

Now let's look at the rest of his history...

American Gigolo, Flashdance, Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Days of Thunder (hack), The Ref, Bad Boys, Crimson Tide, Dangerous Minds (not too bad), The Rock, Con Air, Armageddon, Enemy of the State, Gone in 60 Seconds, Coyote Ugly, Remember the Titans, Pearl Harbor, Bad Company, Kangaroo Jack, Bad Boys II, and King Arthur.

Some were okay when they came out but haven't held up well over the years. Most were forgettable and some were downright terrible. When you have a track record like that, expect critics to walk in with extreme caution. I usually do.

Bruckheimer is a flash and bang producer who hires directors he knows he can work with and get the desired end product which is popcorn fluff summer blockbuster fare. I give him credit, though, for taking a chance with Guerin and also working with Ridley Scott on Black Hawk Down. Scott can be notoriously difficult to work with so I'm sure Bruckheimer kinda backed down on trying to lord over him. But, then again, he already had an in with Scott since he's worked with Ridley's brother, Tony, so many times (Top Gun, Crimson Tide, Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder, and Enemy of the State).
