Very enjoyable but kinda soulless.
I must admit that while PT being annoying, it has more soul.
I would say the opposite. TFA is mindless drivel, but it does have some spirit.
I certainly wont be adding it to my all time greats collection!
No, it’s the best film period. And I say that as someone who is usually into dramas, and not much of an action/adventure fan.
Really>? What about The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Vertigo, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, Any Kubrick film (apart from Eyes Wide Shit) to name but a few masterpieces. ESB is good but it’s definitely not the best ‘film’ ever made…
I’m glad to see that my scale of “Citizen Kane - Ed Wood” has had an impact.
Also I agree that it’s important to judge a film by what it’s trying to accomplish.
The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film ever made, period.

I really liked the atmosphere of the film, it’s a thinkers’ film.
Frink, why defending TFA? Are you saying there won’t be any “The Ridiculous Awakening”? What’s wrong with you, man!? Now I’m disappointed! 😄
Force Blinkers
There’s an exchange in the actual film after they escape that’s something like:
Finn: “How did you do that?!”
Rey: “I don’t know! I’ve flown a few ships in atmosphere before, but I’ve never left the planet!”I’m sure that’s not close to verbatim but it’s definitely the gist. It’s a line I couldn’t make out until my second or third viewing because Rey and Finn are talking at the same time very fast. I took the “few ships” she refers to to mean other junkers Unkar Plutt owns, doing odd jobs for extra rations. She says the Falcon hasn’t flown in years, but I’m sure Plutt had other freighters of similar classes. I’m seeing it again on Saturday with my family, I’ll try to remember it word for word.
Considering this forum is called original trilogy, I think a rebrand is needed as most folk in here consistently defend non-original trilogy films Tfa is just another bad spin off…my second viewing really brought this home… #originaltrilogyand anyoldshitewithstarwarsinthetitle.com
You’re assuming an awful lot of authority about the state of the forum for someone who registered less than a month ago.
I joined thinking this forum was dedicated to fans of ‘just’ the original trilogy? It seems that I was very, very wrong. Loads of TFA blinkers on in here, must have seen a different film to me as it’s just as bad as the prequels if not worse as it’s not even had the involvement of the ORIGINAL creator.
Now I know you are at the wrong place. This forum was started to support the original films, not the creator who has withheld them from us.
I knew I was in the wrong place when I read some of the threads and replies from the resident CLIQUE, you all should really try harder to be inclusive rather than criticise every post a non-clique member posts, your forum may last longer.
I’ve been a member for roughly eight months now and I’ve hardly felt like I was ignored by a “clique.” People here, like most SW fans, are just very opinionated, and you can hardly expect to find a forum where everyone will immediately agree with everything you like and dislike about something. Also you are kind of implying that the people here who acknowledge the flaws of TFA but still really enjoy it are more or less dumb or ignorant, so you’ll have to expect some retorts.
Ignoring the fact that TFA is shit is definitely ‘dumb’. I was open to the Post trilogy but how many chances can you give it (I’ve already given it 4 chances), get a decent script and a brilliant SCI FI director such as Ridley Scott or Spielberg and we may get a decent film…

It is obvious that everyone in this thread had some form of expectation going in to the theater and that is why opinions very so much. I enjoyed the film as a whole but it doesn’t mean I don’t expect the bar to go up now that TFA is here. I’m sure they are watching and listening to all the reactions.
This film has short comings for sure. I went in expecting nothing and had a good time with my daughter. Do I think some of the rehash was unnecessary, sure. Do I feel the writers, including Lawrence Kasdan, could have brought it bigger, yes. I’m sure there were a lot of outside interests at play here that none of us had control over too. The film is here to stay regardless of how anyone of us feel about it.
I’d like to think that with the box office draw it’s had they can use that and all the reactions to tread smarter for the next 2 installments. Us Star Wars fans are a finicky bunch but we probably know the universe far better than those making the films now so it stands to reason that there are a lot of heavy handed reactions. I am hoping that we will all be heard and that they will think before they leap in to the next film.
😃
I remained unpumped by the hype so there wasn’t the deflation I experienced after TPM or Prometheus. Sadly I remain unpumped for the next one too.
Prometheus was a good film IMO, I’m looking forward to the next one. But then again I was never bowled over by Alien.
Considering all TFA discussion is confined to a handful of threads (one of which you started), it seems to me that if you’re so bothered by people’s reactions to that film, you can easily avoid them. I’m not pretending to be an old timer here myself, but my impression has always been that this place is about preserving and campaigning for the OOT, not relentlessly dumping on everything else. Hating everything since 1983 is not and has never been a requirement for membership.
You sir are correct, I need to avoid anything pre/post. Is there such a forum?

On reflection TPM is a better film as it had a better score and was paced better and that says a lot.

Why would there even be a map to locate Luke if he’s gone into hiding>? Plus don’t Force sensitive folk ‘sense’ each other and talk to each other remotely as seen in the OT.
I went to see it again, and I hate it even more…I’m OUT. There will only ever be 3 star wars films! The end!
Listening to the soundtrack last night, thanks Amazon.
Definitely better than John William’s PT scores and right up there with the originals. The score has such a freshness and familiarity at the same time
I couldn’t agree less. This for me was the weakest Star Wars score. Even the crappiest prequel moments had memorable themes. The only motifs that I recognised were from the OT.
I concur , and the only aspect that was successful in the PT was the excellent score. I have to say if you want to watch a proper SCI-FI film then watch Interstellar it is by far the best SCI FI film of modern times.
The film has been out for almost ten days now, spoilers are EVERYWHERE ffs, delete the thread if you want
People here really do have drastically different personal rating systems.
I personally would give TFA a 6/10, but whereas that’s a bad rating for someone here, for me that’s a pretty decent rating. Citizen Kane is a 10/10 for me, and something like the Avengers; dumb, but not necessarily stupid and without a plot, and definitely entertaining and funny, is a 5/5.What.
What?
Are you objecting to my rating of the SW movies, or my other examples?
I think your jump from ratings out of ten to ratings out of 5 threw him? But comparing Citizen Kane to TFA is like comparing a Picasso to a child’s drawing.
It’s really hard to decide which is the worst Star Wars character in history now, Jar Jar or Phasma? At least Jar Jar was a genuine character, even if wildly inappropriate and hopelessly annoying. Even the Ewoks were cute and had their emotional little moments.
Phasma’s only purpose in the entire ******* film was to lower the shields for the resistance. That’s it. Just imagine an imperial officer whose only function was to lower the shields on Endor and say “you’re gonna regret this!”
I think her role was to sell action figures, ‘chrome trooper’, such a shame.
Don’t forget that they cut roughly 20 minutes from TFA just prior to its release. And a few months ago the film was 4 hours long.
Give me those rushes and i’ll have a go at rectifying it 😃
My issue is Vader wore a mask for a reason and never took it off
I know what your rebuttal will be like, but couldn’t help myself.
I’m aware of that and the finite scene but he never took it off when asked etc
The original trilogy (theatrical versions)
ESB 9/10
ANH 8/10
ROJ 7/10
Spin offs
TPM 5/10 (because of the score and Darth Maul)
TFA 4/10
ROS 3/10
AOC 2/10
Kylo is part of the knights of Ren, we see them all wearing masks in the force vision scene, so him wearing a mask may be related to that. Or it’s becaue of his worship of Vader, which makes sense as him being Kylo’s very powerful grandfather.
We saw Luke for only a few seconds, I’m sure the next episode will show a bit more of this island and what Luke has been doing there.
My issue is Vader wore a mask for a reason and never took it off. I always thought bobafett was a humanoid until we saw PT where his dad took his helmet off and it was a kiwi underneath, why does ren take it off any chance he gets, just seems pointless. Are we going to see more storm troopers without helmets on, it takes the sci fi out of it and normalises the whole thing IMO.
These are my dislikes, if you wish to attempt to explain them by ‘creating’ then feel free.

I’ll start
Rey’s quick found force abilities.
The poor humour and some very dodgy dialogue. The holding hands scenario for example.
Rathtar scene!
Why does Ren bother to wear a mask?
Starkiller base.
Maz Kanata.
How Han’s death was dealt with.
The scene with Luke, has he really been on a cliff in Ireland all that time with seemingly nothing there?
Why does Ren worship Vader? And why the Dark side is referred to the darkness!!
Where did Snoke come from?
Use of Luke’s theme for Rey>?
The R2/BB8 map thing.
All the rehashed stuff from OT, chess table, Maz cantina scene.
The seemingly endless Falcon shots.
PHASMA was purported to be a strong female character/role model, yet she did exactly as told without even so much of a fight?
I’m sure there’s plenty more.
How has luke been training others for 30 odd year or fighting without a light sabre?
