Not a fan of ranking films, but here goes…
Star Wars: 4,5/5 - Groundbreaking classic. A celebration of film and the ultimate feel good (fantasy) film. Only a weak middle act (Death Star) keep it from a perfect score. (best film score ever produced)
The Empire Strikes Back: 5/5 - Perhaps the boldest sequel ever made. A dark fairytale so beautifully conceived it hurts. A masterpiece in the genre on every level.
Return of the Jedi: 2/5 - Huge disappointment. Stupid and poor conclusion that only gets worse the more the years go by. Great puppetry (Jabba) and costume design (royal guards) but the magic was gone.

The Phantom Menace: 1/5 - Sterile test-tube baby
Attack of the Clones: Never seen it, and probably never will
Revenge of the Sith: Never seen it, and probably never will

The Force Awakens: Not yet seen. And have not yet decided if I’m going to. Please, convince a grumpy old fart if he should?

From your comments, which echo mine apart from jedi, as I like it, probably an age thing. If you’re going to see it,then see at as it’s supposed to be seen, on the big screen. That’s all I’m going to say.

I think a lot of people are trying very hard to like the film after the prequels but I think on a few viewings at home and not on the big screen they will see all the faults in all their glory.

Perhaps they might be. Perhaps I am. Perhaps people are trying very, very hard to dislike the film also due to the prequels. Perhaps definitely the last one.

For me it’s nothing to do with the prequels, this is the beginning of a new set of star wars spin offs with tfa clearly setting out a new trilogy. I didn’t dislike the film like I completely disliked the prequels, I just left confused as to what this film actually was which, for me seemed a film that was poorly executed. It could have been brilliant! I just felt they tried to hard if that makes sense? Almost as if they sat around the table throwing as many ideas at it as possible. Keep it simple Imo it didn’t require a lot of the elements contained within it to set the scene for the subsequent installments!

I understand what he’s saying, the film is forgettable and nobody will be quoting lines from it as nothing in it etched itself into any cognitive area. It was just like an action movie, a series of visual events that although entertaining, is ultimately forgettable. I think a lot of people are trying very hard to like the film after the prequels but I think on a few viewings at home and not on the big screen they will see all the faults in all their glory.

I stand by what I said prior to viewing…for me there will only ever be three…it’s just not working!

So you went in determined to rate it below ROTJ regardless. I think my head isn’t the one that needs checking.

No, I went in expecting great things as I’d avoided major spoilers for days and heard it was ‘good’ which it was in a fashion. Just not a patch on jedi for ME.

Okay I’ll have a go, luke will train rey in the force (even though shes picked it up!)

I’m not sure why you’re nitpicking this. Luke used the Force in A New Hope to blow up the Death Star.

After having a quick training session by ob1… Yes. Rey just decided she could use it by closing her eyes mid battle

Pretty predictable what’s going to happen in the next installations.

Interesting. Perhaps you could share now, rather than after the next movie comes out.

Okay I’ll have a go, luke will train rey in the force (even though shes picked it up!) luke will have to fight ren possibly kill ren and the be defeated by snoke (probably in front of luke’s daughter, rey). The final installment will see rey as fully fledged powerful jediess take down snoke.

Do you think Disney will remake the prequels?

I would much rather leave well enough alone. If it ain’t broken don’t fix it. I believe they are perfect as they are. Sure, there may be elements that may be better had they tried something else but the stories are written in stone so to speak.

Jason

I’m not saying alter or amend the current prequels. I’m hoping they have another go at the back story and give it some proper depth.

That’s not how executives will see it in fifteen years or however long we’re talking. Honestly, it would set a dangerous precedent that in no way would be worth it. Better to focus on making the new movies good than pouring energy into a do-over of something most audiences are content to just ignore.

It’s difficult to ignore that the OT has a dark (or not so dark) shadow hanging over it. If it were to be revisited and completely remade to tie in with the OT (in terms of continuity) it’d be brilliant. If I had Disney money I’d definitely make it happen.
