Fantastic work! Amazingly, the skin tones look pretty natural, which is always where colorization efforts fail.

It was a pain to get right and took me the longest time out of any part of the frame.

Here’s a new cut of the Vader surpise. It’s not longer, but there’s two new angles integrated in.

I’m also having trouble working out where the Lobot capture scene should go, or even if I should use it. The missing slug of footage doesn’t let it work quite well and the continuity of the final film doesn’t really work out.

Hey, Bobson! I think you’re on to something cool here, and a bunch of the clips look fantastic so far, but I think you’re using certain bits in ways that aren’t quite accurate. For example, I think that bit with the probe coming to camera through the flames isn’t supposed to be right after it crashes. I think it’s pretty clearly the scene from the script where the Probot wipes out a Rebel outpost before Han and Chewie are sent out to deal with it. I think that’s why the wreckage is pretty clear in frame. The actual destruction of the base is off-screen in the fifth draft, and the shot of the aftermath that it describes is almost exactly like this shot from the eBook.

And right you are! After looking at the 4th and 5th draft, and seeing this line, looks like the probe does attack an outpost.

script

The “Trooper Voice” is missing in the final cut, but there is around 7 seconds where I could dub the voice back if I could. I think it would slot right back in, and then with the clip of the Probot firing right after.

Secondly, I think your edit of the Echo Base Wampa attack is a bit wonky on the continuity. Granted, the footage as presented isn’t exactly the most easy stuff to work with, but I think it’s very clear to see the shot from the finished film of the ice crumbling onto R2’s head is what segued into the wall collapsing, and then lead to him getting locked in the corridor. The scene of him peaking from the wall occurs during the troopers fighting the Wampa off in the script, and at this point I would say having the sound of the Wampa being defeated over this shot is probably the best bet with the available footage. It’s hard to say if the scene’s scripted finale, with the Wampa being defeated by some large gattling-gun style blaster, was ever filmed, but my money is on no.

And one last thing, I think a lot of the shots of the actual Wampa suit during the attack scene were probably shot just for safety. The script describes quick snippets all until you see the corpse on the floor at the very end.

I honestly might just cut the whole thing, I think there is enough set up with the shot during the Han/Leia argument and C-3PO mentioning the ice monster in the Medical Bay. The Wampa attack just doesn’t have a real conclusion, it just needed like 2 shots of the soldier firing the Bazooka and the Wampa going down. I could dub the scene or something but it’s hard to work with the very limited footage.

Good luck on this! I think you may try perusing the sound effects wiki for the sound design question. In 1979, Burtt would still be using stock effects as well as his own recordings.

I didn’t know about this website but it’s very helpful

https://soundeffects.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:Episode_V-The_Empire_Strikes_Back(1980)/Sound_Effects_Used/Alphabetically

I’ve also got a whole stack of SFX I got from ‘The Sounds of Star Wars’ book which I’ve already used to mix a few things.

I feel that you should release the deleted-scenes only, as you did for ‘Star Wars: Leftovers’, without doing an extended edit.

https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-Leftovers-A-Collection-of-Raw-Footage-and-Deleted-Scenes-Released/id/82752

I’m sure that you have a lot of other projects that you want to do, so let someone else use the collection of deleted scenes to produce their own polished fan-edit of ESB.

Are you going to use the bounty hunter footage, from the 40th Anniversary videos?

Annoyingly, there’s a lot of missing frames, that’s impossible to fix.

A pity, as the scene would fit in nicely with the surrounding material.

get off that game and do your homework

ADDITIONS (so far)

Extended Han/Leia kiss? 😉

It’s in B/W, so I’ll probably save it for a 2nd version of this project. But yes I do like that alt version of the scene.

Thank goodness the most important section, “OK, hotshot!” is in color.

It’s in one of the 40th Anniversary videos which is good, but it could be tricky cutting it into the long take.

Do we know what dialogue was intended for the Wampa attack?

There’s only one line of dialogue, and that comes at the end of the scene, so I could dub it if I wanted to considering their mouths are off screen.

I’m really impressed that there’s as much material for the Wampa stuff as you even have here!

Yeah there’s shocking a lot of the unused Wampa footage out there. There’s a longer version of Luke escaping the cave that I probably use but is very cool.

This is really cool to see! What sources have you been pulling from so far?

Deleted Scenes from the 2011 set, Rinzler eBook, Empire of Dreams, 40th Anniversary Videos, Michel Parbot Making of, Sounds of Star Wars book, Evolution of the Lightsaber Duel, trailers, 2004 DVD Outtakes, and anything else I can get my hands on.

A slow work in progress of an extended cut of ESB. There’s a lot of stuff out there from a lot of sources, so I’m not 100% on exactly what I will and won’t use. I’ve finished a pass most of the Hoth section of the film so far.

Extended Opening
https://vimeo.com/692903101

Extended Medical Bay
https://vimeo.com/690488443

Han/Leia Arguemnt
https://vimeo.com/692906633

Rough Wampa Attack (almost no sound mix)
https://vimeo.com/689887320

Obviously none of these clips are 100% finished yet, and the sound design (more than anything) needs a lot of work as most deleted clips are silent or have an extremely minimilist sound mix using only on-set audio. If anyone wan’t to help out with sound design, I’d be more than happy to work with you.

ADDITIONS (so far)

  • added additional shot of Probe Droid rising up after landing
  • added exteneded scene of the Wampa attacking Luke
  • added extended scene with Han telling Chewie he’ll be right back
  • added extended Echo Base argument with Han/Leia
  • added a Wampa attacking Echo Base
  • added extended Medical Bay scene
  • added C-3PO ripping the sign off the Wampa trap door
  • added a Snowtrooper being pulled into the Wampa trap room

With all of those scenes back, the film runs at 2:09:22 vs the theatrical 2:04:54. Obviously there is going to be more additions and trims and all that to get the deleted scenes and moments to all work as best I can.

I plan on making one version with the finished colour scene, and another with the unfinished B/W ones, since there is a lot of interesting stuff in these exclusively monochromatic scenes.
