Reorganising Star Wars Fanedits

Yeah… when the mods see you posted it on FE in the ‘OT Renegades Voyeur thread’ - where the old clique congregate to take pot shots at this site - before posting it on here… this reads like a wind up.

I apologise to everyone as I shouldn’t of posted it over there first or at all, I wasn’t aware there was a feedback section over here and I should of looked more thourghly.

ooj has already been through the ‘Toys and Memorabilia’ forum and sorted that out - including a new Index for it. As he has done for the ‘SW Preservation’, ‘SW Fan Edits’ and ‘Fan Edits’ sections. He is due to start work on Preservations soon too (it looks like he already has).

Threads have already been relabelled as ‘Ideas’, ‘Info’, ‘Info Wanted’, ‘Help Wanted’, (unfinished projects) - with more added to ‘discussion /idea thread’ index or sections, ‘Help: looking for…’, or a mix of each depending on the thread content. Finished project threads have been left alone - so it is easier to distinguish what is a project - and what isn’t.

I have noticed this tagging of threads as of late, and I have to say its a step in the right direction, I’m a big supporter of this idea, as I mentioned in my post.

The Index threads seem to have been updated and added to - and even unfinished projects with useful information have been added to the ‘discssion / idea’ sections. ooj says they may be of interest and help others loooking into projects for the future, and record the efforts on here - even if they weren’t finished or released.

The ‘markdown’ posts which were all over the place on here have been removed (for the most part) - as have many double and triple posts.

Multiple request threads for ‘where are the Despecialized Edits?’ have been merged into a mega thread, along with ‘how-to and help’ questions - and are no longer prevalent through the forums here.

I know Harmy has tackled this sort of thing, other threads still share similar issues such as Smudger9, DonKamillo, Hal9000 and even this small thread about upscaling deleted scenes consists mostly of requests. I know there is still a lot of clean up that is done and it’s amazing that the mods clean up a lot of messy threads, but the amount of posts dedicated to requests to PM instead of PMing often strangles discussion.

Bobson, if you’re being genuine and not taking the piss, then I am truly sorry and deeply apologise. Though you may want to have a look around again at the things you have issues with. Posting that on FE, and then this on here… reads like you are taking the piss out of the mods on here. The timing of this, especially as ooj was apparantly the mod a few people now at FE had issues with (and still takes jibes & digs at) - and just so happens to be in the process of finishing up a re-organisation of the Fan Project forums… sucks. That’s not even taking into account you saying ‘this is something that I’ve had on my mind for a while now’…

I’m also deeply sorry if my post did not come across as genuine, my timing was awful and I regret that sincerely. I don’t have any problems with any mods and I don’t associate with any group that takes the piss out of them. I didn’t know that they were nearly at completion of a re-organisation and I look awful now for mentioning something they should do while doing it.

I’m not even sure why I bothered typing this up - it’ll likely lead to arguments, division and old wounds - sorry mods! (please delete this post if you wish)

Me neither, I don’t want to argue with anyone here either. I apologise for my tone as it came across as hyper critical

Reorganising Star Wars Fanedits
Time

This is something that I’ve had on my mind for a while so I thought I’d type it up. I think the Star Wars fanedits and preservations needs a bit of a clean up and reorganisation.

There’s a lot of threads in both categories, well over 1,000, as there are a lot of users, but it means everything is mixed in together. Ideas for edits, edits in the works, completed edits, inactive and unfinished edits and requests are all put together, meaning it can be a pain to navigate at times.

A lot of threads end up becoming simply request chains with everyone asking for the same thing over and over for years while the edit is in development and after its completion. It clogs things up and stops discussion. I’d propose that we make a separate section simply for requests and trying to minimise that kind of post as many people sign up just to request popular works such as Adywan, Harmy and Hal9000, even though there are detailed guides by now on how to get your hands on them. People often double up and makes posts in threads and threads of their own to ask for them with the ever popular Markdown default text as they don’t bother with a body text. Also I think it should be more common to ask through PMs as those posts really clog things up. This is the one thing that drives me up the wall more than anything as I open a thread looking for some legitmate discussion, and find a chain of requests.

I’d like to split the ideas/in the works edits from the completed edits, but I don’t know how viable that is. Beacuse I can rarely tell if an edit is done or not based on the title and first post. It often takes some digging for me to see if the edit is official done and released, or still needs some work done. There is often just a jumble of new TROS or TLJ edits and it’s hard to see what their status is if any as many edits have one post and then are subsequently abandoned/ I know there are index threads, but everything is still mixed in together. The new IDEAS tagging is pretty good as now I can telling something is just a conception and I feel this is a good step in the right direction.

I do caution against too many subcategories though, since there is no real search, people won’t know where things belong, so either we will get lots of duplicate posts, or else topics will just go dead as less eyes get into the various sub-forums.

Sorry for the garble, but I felt it should be said over here instead of FE where I had originally put it.

Revenge of the Sith - Bobson's Theatrical Reconstruction (Released)
Time

I mean it’s pretty useless, there aren’t that many changes are there? And you’re right.

Main source is the 2020 1080p Blu-Ray with patches of schorman13’s HDTV Pres. v2 as I generally prefer the look of the newest release.

CHANGES
00:00:00 - Prequel Era Fox and Lucasfilm cards inserted as 2020 removed the “News Corperation” and added the Sequel Era Lucas card
00:33:18 - Bottom half of Jedi temple has been revised, replaced with HDTV shot and wipe
00:38:05 - Coruscant sun, more intense, now dulled slightly
00:48:28 - Kashyyyk roofs revised with moss, replaced with HDTV shot
00:53:12 - Coruscant sky is brighter in 2020, now dulled slightly
00:59:30 - Clone voices removed when they enter and attack the droid forces on Utapau, was a 2011 change thats been reverted with the HDTV audio
01:23:01 - Another Kashyyyk building roof color change
01:35:33 - Mustafar screen revised to be brighter, replaced with partial HDTV shot
01:40.26 - Brightened sqaure power window over Obi-Wan has been removed with HDTV shot
02:02:19 - Theatrical wipe restored, I mean it was restored on the 2011 BR, but it’s still of note

Thanks to none for his work on the DIF 2004 v 2011 and 2004 v 2020 of all six films which helped find some new changed that otherwise wouldn’t of been found.

Star Wars saga - Extra Extended Edition (1080p) (* unfinished project / WIP *)

Wow, this sounds incredibly ambitious and I am looking forward to it, especially the ROTS scene of Yoda communicating with Qui-Gon and the ROTJ scene with Darth Vader in his meditation chamber trying to reach Luke. I’ve never seen anyone try to restore these scenes. Would it be possible to get a preview of them?

ROTS is done as you can read further here

And ROTJ would be a long way off, not sure what film I’d tackle next though, but ROTJ is ambitious

Falling Into Darkness: The Making of Episode III (Released)
Time

The final cut is probably nearing completion. All the nametags, and technical details have been fixed to my knowledge so a release may be soon.

I think I’ve settled on a name, which probably will be Falling into Darkness: The Making of Episode III. I’ve made a poster too, with some Mustafar concept art.

Ooh…this is promising.

Edit: There is a “feature length” documentary on the making of Episode III (Within a Minute). Do you plan to integrate that material as well or does this sort of stand alongside it?

There is so much material in there and it’s such a good doco into the making of the Mustafar section of the film, that I thought it was best to leave that along and create a second one so that I don’t end up making a 4 hour long slog that becomes a bore.

Falling Into Darkness: The Making of Episode III (Released)
Time

title

I’ve always been annoyed by the wide spread of behind-the-scenes content of the Prequels (specifically ROTS) and that the Complete Saga Blu-Ray has a lot of stuff buried within the “Collection” that most people would skip over. The DVD has some great stuff too, that was broken up into featurettes and webisodes, some of which were only on starwars.com. I’ve amassed all the Making-Of content that I could from a variety of sources to make a feature length documentary based around Revenge of the Sith, broken up into five chapters.

Chapter I - The Cyborg and the Jedi (38min)
The first chapter discusses the opening battle over Coruscant and talks about the ships featured, General Grevious, Dooku, digital filmmaking, lightsabers and Obi-Wan, and his progression from Episode II and then into Episode IV

Chapter II - Capital of the Republic (27min)
This one is a bit more broad and kind of a catchall for a lot of stuff, but is mostly stuff on the city planet itself. Things included are Coruscant locations, Padme, Palpatine, Mace Windu and their fight, C-3PO, and finally costume and creature design.

Chapter III - The Expanding Galactic War (35min)
Planets, planets and more planets. The Clone Wars cover a lot of planets, and so does this section. Utapau, the Utapauns and the Boga chase dominate the first section. But Order 66 is described as well and the featured planets with Kashyyk and the Wookies taking up the backend.

Chapter IV - Last Turn to the Dark Side (35min)
Anakin and his turn to Darth Vader is explored in great detail here in what I think is the longest section. Anakin as a character is discussed as well as Hayden Christianson as an actor. His development as a character across the trilogy and his darkness within, character design and costuming from his Jedi robes to his horrible burns and the Vader suit itself.

Chapter V - The Fires Within (21min)
The last chapter covers Mustafar and the surprising miniatures that make up the planet. This is covered amazingly in “Within A Minute” so there’s just a few tidbits here as well as some of the new Imperials being talked about. The rest shows some of the premiere, the joy from within the fanbase and the cast/crew and the conclusion of the journey of Episode I-VI.

The current cut is 2:38, which is longer than the film itself. But considering this was cut down from 5 hours of footage, it ain’t bad. I’ll continue to make cuts here and there to fasten things up.

Rough cuts are as follows (these have been updated since with more footage and cleaner cuts)

Battle Over Coruscant, Grevious and Obi-Wan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZUE7gX8mEc

Revenge of the Sith - Expanded Edition (v2 Now Released!)
Time

I did see both of those, but I do prefer the Hal9000 position of them. Having the “Plot” scene right before the council scene makes sense to me so that we can see where they’re coming from before putting Anakin on the council, so that we know they’re hesitant and suspicious of him and Palpy.
As for the “Confront” scene, I also prefer having the vision of Obi-Wan just before Anakin asks Padme about him, as he has him on his mind in that moment. Also having the apartment scene right after feels off in the continuity, different Padme outfit and a strange teleport.

The edit is just about done now, I’ll be uploading shortly with a few bonus features, listed below.

  • Unfinished and Unused Workprint Scenes (6:48)
  • Deleted and Alternate Trailer Shots (0:13)
  • Behind the Scenes, Raw Footage and B-Roll of Deleted Scenes (3:24)
  • George Lucas and Rick McCallum Introduce the Deleted Scenes (5:55)
  • George Lucas and Rick McCallum Talk Deleted and Alternate Scenes: Feature Commentary Clips (7:04)
  • PixelMagic Trailer - Breathing (1:24)

The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)
Time

Here’s some artwork I mocked up, obviously not perfect and still a bit boring, but it’s a start. I tried to match it similarly to the first two edits, with some success. I swapped Rey’s head from some other photo, so that all 3 would have the characters facing forwards, but it aint’t 100% so I made a variant just in case

Revenge of the Sith - Expanded Edition (v2 Now Released!)
Time

I’ve found this deleted clip of Palpy’s shuttle on the approach to Coruscant from the 2nd trailer, but tried to slot it back into the film. It added a wipe as there is in the theatrical cut, but this is a lot faster, not sure if its too fast though, so I made one without the wipe. I think i prefer the wipe, but could it be better? (shorter, longer or delete the shot entirely?) There’s also no audio yet as I haven’t worked that out yet.

A test render has been done and uploaded, although it’s not the final cut as left 9 minutes of dead air at the end by accident. The correct runtime is about 2:29:15.

I’ll send it out to about 3 or 4 people for feedback so that I can fix anything that needs fixing, but it is uploaded now. I won’t be sending out mass links just yet, so ideally don’t bombard me me PMs.
