AVATAR and 3D in general....
Time

Thanks for that link TV's Frink. The lack of content is the main drawback to the current market of 3D telly's and the studio's and hardware manufacturers aren't doing anything to help the situation.

On a different note, I saw TRON Legacy in IMAX 3D on Sunday. I must admit, I was very impressed. They didn't rely on any cheap jumping out of the screen at you tricks, but the action sequences benefited greatly from the added depth of field. Although at times it seemed as if you couldn't tell if it was in 3D or not, I think subliminally at least, that added depth helped engross you in the film even more.

Of course, the IMAX screen might of helped as well.

Some (not so kind) words about Lucas by Mel Smith
Time

Sorry Kenobius Prime if you thought I was having a go at you. What I was trying to say before I got caught up in a rant against the Daily M**l is stories like this should be taken with a grain of salt and it's always best to look at the complete story.

As I say, it's apparent Mel has bad memory's about his time working with Lucas. His comment seems to be a sly dig at Lucas, possibly a joke but more than likely just a story used to explain why he dislikes Lucas.

He tells this to a so called newspaper (who once got Shakira mixed up with Enter Shikari) who publish it. The internet jumps over the story and repeats it because it's the crazy type of thing Lucas would do (go back and alter a movie and insert CG characters). LFL denies this is happening but when it comes to LFL, that means it's not happening until they confirm it's happening so take the denial with a pinch of salt as well.

However, as we know Lucas plans to just re-release the Star Wars movies over and over again, so unless he's planning on remaking all 6 films with dead actors I can't see this happening.

Something occurred to me last night though. Back in the early 90's, when rumours about the prequels was beginning to emerge, I remember reading somewhere that Lucas planned to use images of Alec Guinness from his early movies to create a digital young Kenobi in the prequels. As I say, this was back in the early 90's when Mel Smith would have been working with Lucas on the Radioland Murders so that could be where the story comes from origonaly.

So there's my analysis of this story.

Sorry again Kenobius Prime and thanks for sharing what Mel Smith said.

The main problem with that article is it begins with the words Daily M**l. Why the interview might be accurate, that shit rag of a newspaper would more than likely take any comment like that out of perspective.

It's already been denied anyway

So please, don't take this as absolute truth, just because someone who had a bad working relationship with Lucas bad mouths him.

Irvin Kershner has passed away
Time

Who'd of thought that the year of Empire's 30th Anniversary would see the saddest news of all.

RIP Irvin Kershner.

Thank you for giving us the best Star Wars movie.

Thank You for giving us the best line ever:

Leia "I love You"

Han "I know."

Thank you for scaring me as a child with the brain removal scene in RoboCop 2.

You have now become more powerful than we could possibly imagine, for you have become one with the force.

A sad day indeed, but we will celebrate your life with the movies you gave us.

RIP

Thanks ImperialFighter, that will be great.

Think I found the articles you linked to

http://www.digitalversus.com/bringing-tv-to-life-with-2d-to-3d-conversion-news-13322.html

After doing some research, my guess is it was the TX-P42GT20, A Panasonic with 2D - 3D conversion.

Don't know why I'm looking at 3D TV's at the moment, until the price drops and more 3D content is available, I wont be rushing out to buy one.

The Infamous "Stormtrooper Aim" Explained With Science
Time

Ok, I think we may need to start a Cracked.com thread but guess who's number 4 on the list of 7 Classic Star Wars characters who totally dropped the ball?

http://www.cracked.com/article_17546_7-classic-star-wars-characters-who-totally-dropped-ball.html

As they point out, Leia withholds the information when she's tortured by Dr. Ball M.D. and when her home planet is under threat she lies about where the Rebels are. So despite going through all this and correctly guessing that they're being tracked she just figures "F##k it, the Empire's going to find us eventually!."

Luckily for her and the rebellion Number 3 on the list is Tarkin who decides to park the Death Star in orbit of Yavin and wait for the rebel base to come into range.

Star Wars makes a lot more sense when you realise it's populated by a group of idiots.

my memory isn't that bad, is it? (in SW '77 - Luke misses with the grappling hook?)
Time

Sorry to beat a dead horse but I've just found this article about a Star Wars bibliographer.

http://www.starwars.com/fans/profiles/20090211.html

If someone would go to this much trouble to collect every single printed reference to Star Wars, don't you think that someone would have collected every TV appearance of George Lucas? Especially a late 70's/early 80's interview in which he talks about the changes he's made to the films.

That's why we doubt this interview aired.

'78 interview with David Prowse [spoilers] :) he reveals Vader is Luke's father
Time

Here's the "Official" response to this story

http://starwarsblog.starwars.com/index.php/2010/11/15/major-empire-spoiler-actually-dropped-in-1977/

Is it just me or does LFL's attitude towards these story's stink. An article surfaces suggesting Prowse knew about Empire's secret plot reveal, they trace the evidence back to an old fanzine who interviewed Prowse and all they have to say about it is correct the date to 1977!

We've all been told Prowse didn't know the big secret plot twist, we find evidence that he may have known as far back as 1977 and all they can do is comment on the incorrect dating in the original article!

Typical LFL BS. This, along with their reaction to the 3-D backlash just proofs that they're not in touch with a large portion of their fans.

Sorry, that's my rant over. Just wanted to share this.

Yet another case of "Phantom Grappling Hook Syndrome". Check out this link for an article on the nature of memory.

http://www.cracked.com/article_18704_5-mind-blowing-ways-your-memory-plays-tricks-you.html

It might surprise people just how much Star Wars stuff is preserved from the early 80's and some record of a George Lucas interview (video or magazine article) would have surfaced by now.

As for visual evidence of the missing scene, bootleg videos taken from 1977 prints are available on the net and believe it or not, actual film prints (both 35mm and 70mm) exist in the hands of private collectors. If the scene existed, news of it would have leaked onto the internet following one of the many "private screenings" we often hear about.

I'll throw down a challenge open to anyone all over the world.

You find and post video evidence of this scene , then I will give you 100 English Pounds for finding it.

However, my guess is it's as rare as rocking horse poo !!!

Article on prequel films. Note: Does not pertain to Godfather II, which isn't a prequel - it's a sequel with extended flashback sequences - or a partial prequel to some.

Has there ever really been a GOOD prequel to anything? Given their very nature aren't they as a storytelling device doomed to mediocrity at best?

Its why im really apprehensive about Ridley Scott making a prequel to Alien. It has alot to live upto. I just hope he hasn't lost his tallent for film making like George Lucas has.

The more I read about the Alien Prequels, the more I worry about them too. However, Ridley Scott has made a lot more movies than Lucas over the last 30 years, so he's had a lot more practice.

A new Star Wars Trilogy on the way?
Time

FFS. Move on Lucas. If you want to make a sequel trilogy it should have commenced in 1986. Instead, any sequel trilogy now would wipe out 20 years of EU. That's not necessary a bad thing but thanks to the prequels we already have a load of EU retconning.

The sad thing is, this sounds all to plausible. The SE was only released to fund production of the prequels, now it looks like the 3D release is designed to fund the sequels.

Some people just don't get it.

Actually, the rebuttal is mostly true.  This is what I said about the CNN article missing the point.  When ineffective arguments are made supporting our side, it ends up being more fodder for GL and others to make us look bad.

We have to be very careful exactly what we say and how we say it.

Agreed. Both articles are extreme examples of the two sides of this argument. What we need is someone who can articulate our side without resorting to name calling and extreme analogies.

doubleofive makes a good point about re-releasing the movies unchanged at the cinema. If Back to the Future can make £462,000 at the UK box office without new visual effects or a 3-D conversion, why can't Star Wars?

Next year I'll own Star Wars for the first of several times on Blu-ray!

I was there.

1. From what I've read, it was actually the 1981 re-release print, as it had "EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE" and "Close the blast doors! Close the blast doors!" was missing.

"Close the blast doors" was missing in the first 1977 run as well - it didn't appear until the mono mix, which was finished some time after the Dolby mixes.

The 1981 print you saw probably had the original 1977 Dolby Stereo sound mix.

Nope "Close the blast doors, close the blast doors! .... Open the blast doors, open the blast doors!" was there in the original 70mm Dolby 6 channel on opening day.

(as was Luke missing the first grappling hook throw, which has never appeared in any other version, not in any of the 35mm prints no matter when they were release, nor in any of the home versions- Lucas decided that it made Luke's kills appear to feeble and decided he wanted his skills to seem more amazing there after all; the original scene was longer and more dramatic since more suspense was built up over a more extended period of time as the stormtroopers slowly propped the door open)

Beg to differ with you there. The "close the blast doors line" was only heard in the Mono Mix and was never in the 70mm Mix. This is confirmed by an in theatre recording of the 70mm Mix from 1977.

As for the missing grappling hook, after 33 years no one has ever been able to prove this was ever seen in a released version of the film. Unless any one can produce hard evidence of it and not a 33 year old memory, I'm guessing  it didn't happen.

Star Wars audio remixed again! (for the coming 2011 blu ray set)
Time

An interesting article on the Home Cinema Choice website today.

http://hcc.techradar.com/blogs/team-hcc/star-wars-audio-remixed-again-%E2%80%93-3d-06-07-10

Apparently they have already started work on the audio mix for some future release. We can only hope for a 5.1 soundtrack based on the 70mm prints sound mix.

If you listen to the ForceCast in question they say Kenobi’s Krayt Dragon call has been changed again.

http://www.forcecast.net/story/forcecast/Weekly_ForceCast_July_2_2010_132277.asp

The interview with Matt Wood and David Acord begins approximately 50 minutes in.

Opinions?
