NON-Star Wars Fan Edit and Alternate DVD Covers SHOWCASE
Time
I redesigned the cover of Walt Disney's Fantasia for a school project. I re-did it in the style of it's sequel, Fantasia 2000:

(scaled down because I'm not sure about copyright issues yet)

The Violin Bow is actually Mine, digitally altered with a "colored foil" effect.
(for fellow Musicians, there is a hidden meaning to the Stars (taken from the Tocatta and fugue segment) in my original design.

How do you watch the Star Wars Saga?
Time
to celebrate the anniversary of the firing of three very mean former teachers of mine every may 17th, here's how I do it:

5 days before: The Phantom Menace
4 days before: Attack of the Clones
3 days before: Revenge of the SITH (one of the ONLY times the prequels are watched streight through)
2 days before: A New Hope (OCP's Classic edition)
1 day before: The Empire strikes back (2004 official version)
the day itself: Return of the Jedi (OCP's classic edition), followed immediately by the "Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria" segment of Walt Disney's "Fantasia"

4 days: AOTC
3 days: ROTS
2 days: ANH (OCp's classic edition)
1 day: ESB (2004)
the day itself: ROTJ (OCP) followed immediately by the "Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria" segment of Walt Disney's "Fantasia"

Will those who hate the SE OT and bought the OOT DVD's..
Time
I bought the Pan and scan version of return of the Jedi (with the OOT disc still Widescreen) so I Wasn't buying the same disc twice, plus allowing me to take high-res stills of undestroyed scenes- now I've got a high quality full screen picture of Han and Leia's embrace during the ending celebration, as well as a few other good stills (when the ewoks set them free and all of them are on screen withen the 1.33:1 frame, for example)

plus, it makes the OOT disc clearly the better choice for watching the movie:

destroyed version:
full screen format Modified to fit your screen

Original version:
2.35 Widescreen preserving theatrical presentation

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)

Once again, I agree. And another thing I just realized I'm glad about is how the presentation of the menus does not scream bonus disc. It doesn't have the Star Wars logo with a huge roman numeral behind it and a tiny, tiny title underneath. They have the REAL TITLES with no episode numbers in sight! It doesn't refer to itself as a bonus disc. It has Play Movie, Chapters, Options, and Special Features, just like a regular DVD would. They're clean and simple and not redundant and half as long as the movie like the SE discs. If not for the cover art of the disc referring to it as a bonus disc and having the new logos, it would be perfect. But just watching the actual disc, you'd never know it was supposed to be supplementary material, and I'm glad someone had the balls to make it like that.

i think that proves the Lucasfilm employees have a passion for the OOT and they promoted it as much as Lucas would let them.
in fact, if it weren't for Lucas's iron fist in keeping the OOT inferior, the OOT might not have even been labled "Bonus Feature" at all.

Info: What is your dream fan edit if you could get the rare footage?
Time
I'd do what I HOPE disney is planning to do with the platinum relase of "Fantasia":

1. 5Oth anniversary theatrical edition of Fantasia, with the Original voice of Deems Taylor giving the shortened narrations that don't spoil the whole segments before you watch them, but with an uncut Pastoral segment (black centaurs and all) and with the remastered audio of the DVD, plus Rachel Field's Lyrics for Schubert's "Ave Maria"(which is my second favorite movie ending of all time next to the OOT RotJ) so I could put them in subtitles.

2. the 1982 version with the re-recorded Irwin Kostal score (for comparison)

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
I only got return of the Jedi, because I Can't STAND the destroyed 2004 ending.

I also got the full screen version so the destroyed edition is inferior without question:
Destroyed version: 1.33:1 Pan and scan
Original version: 2.35:1 widescreen

plus, i too suspect there will be a high quality release of the OUT eventually. as this release clearly shows that Lucasfilm employees care about it. so if it doesn't come next year, then it will come when the company is in their hands.

E X A C T L Y!!!!!

Daft buggers.

I cant name another company that actually tries to piss off its most loyal fanbase.......

Yeah, I ponder this fact too...a lot...

possibly Disney, or more accurately, the Eisner company, the way they edit their classics and pass it off as the "Original theatrical version"
i.e. Fantasia and Lion King

Also, notice that the bonus disc of "Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope" says "Star Wars Episode IV A new Hope" instead of just "Star Wars".

maybe the lucasfilm employees only did that to get them past Lucas.

because what's on the Disc is pure retro: No Roman Numeral or "Bonus feature" subtitle in sight!

I think the menus reflect the respect the Lucasfilm employees have for the OOT-or as far as lucas will let them express it.

That is an excellent post! Just goes to show that some people in Lucas' camp are getting sick of his antics. Maybe, just maybe, they will be able to put the pressure on him even more and a proper restoration will happen....some day....

lets hope plenty of college grad OOT fans join lucasfilm so they'll still be there when Lucas isn't.

and you know what, since this is a limited release and the films will be off the market by 2007, I say the defense "this DVD restores a version of the film that is no longer commercially available..." (as quoted by Garrett Gilcrest at the end of RotJ classic edition) will still be quite valid. I say continue with the fan edits.

Bulls-eye- in my opinion, pristine picture quality means diddaly squat when the uplifting effect is destroyed.

That will be a nice comprimise- I'm only getting RotJ- the full screen version if the OOT is Widescreen either way, as I plan to use it to take hi(gher)-res stills of my favorite undestroyed scenes.

"All of the OOT DVDs will be widescreen/letterboxed- even the ones included with the fullscreen SE discs."

is that confirmed? because I like to use the 2004 editions to take screencaps of my favorite un-destroyed scenes, and having the full screen 2004 versions will allow for higher-res stills. that would make the 2004 discs worth buying again (but only if the OOT discs weres still widescreen)

The definitive list: changes you can and can't stand...
Time
I can stand most of it, but what i CAN"T stand are biggies, big enough to label the 2004 editions of ANH and ROTJ as completely Destroyed:

I can't stand the botched audio and missing Music in ANH.

I can't stand the blatently obvious error when the lightsabers cross infront of the emporer's face in RotJ.

and most of all, I HATE Hayden Christensen at the end. completely destroyed the uplifting effect.
