The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).
Time

Hey guys.

This is a sequence composite of my new and hopefully improved Alderaan destruction for my own Star Wars edit. The keen-eyed will know that I've borrowed the shockwave around the planet from Star Trek Generations. I could create my own, but it wouldn't look any better and it would take a very long time.

Hope you like it. Any suggestions welcome.

DV.

(PS Thanks to my buddy Mr Ghostface for uploading it)

I've taken the liberty of shifting this over here so I can comment on it without taking the ESB:R thread off topic.

It looks great and I can imagine it working really well.

It adds another possible alternate model to the OUT, SE, ANH:R and this fun alternate, which also uses a Star Trek element, the Xindi attack in Enterprise : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcWBVZIWfCk&feature=related

The idea of the planet being engulfed in a the green energy of the beam is an interesting addition (would that still be the case if this was carried over to the destruction of the capital ships in ROTJ ?).

I agree with DarthBo the Death Star dish needs to be pointing more within the ballpark of the target but it's a great proof of concept of the idea and certainly shows you have a flare.

And like Bobocop I'd really like to see this in motion.

I'm not sure if the Death Star is firing twice or if it's the same shot from two different angles, if it's one shot it might need a bit of repositioning to get the idea across (and that way you possibly wouldn't need to see the far off Death Star element because we have already seen the dish firing).

PROMETHEUS was (Alien 0?) NOW NO LONGER SPOILER FREE.
Time

The real problem with a prequel is how to get humans in there.

If the suits had a problem with a wooden planet full of space monks I doubt if they would put money into a 2 hr movie with just Giger's designs wiggling about on a bone ship.

These issues are discussed rather well in this article :

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/259949/the_plotobstacles_to_an_alien_prequel.html

I don't have the same problem about the Company knowing that the ship is there and sending the Nostromo out to investigate with Ash onboard as the author of the article has.

Burke in Aliens wasn't very high up in the chain of command and sent the colonists out to the co-ordinates in Ripley's report to feather his own nest so clearly information is passed around on a need to know basis, with in house rivals tending to their own pet projects.

Perhaps there was a previous encounter which someone in the Company wanted to capitalise on and sent the Nostromo out in the same way that Burke does 57 years later.

If this was a personal project of a Company stooge when the ship vanished the perpetrator may have covered his or her failiure up not knowing that Ripley was still floating out there waiting to awake company interest again almost six decades down the line.

I quite like the idea suggested by O'Bannon that the eggs were the remains of a civilised race and the Jockey's crew woke them without adults to provide the education necessary to turn them into anything more than very dangerous feral children.

My better half maintains that the space jokey was a cosmic pizza delivery boy and that the eggs were a strange delicacy from a very dangerous world were the xenomorphs are relatively harmless compared to the other nightmarish creatures that keep their numbers in check .

Tell me what [movies] to watch!
Time

I'm going have to watch it again now.

Prompted by this thread I just watched Went The Day Well? again, sure it's a 1942 propaganda film and some of the performances were a bit mannered but there are some pretty brutal scenes in it (the post office lady, the hand-grenade scene).

I wonder if George Romero watched it (it certainly influenced The Eagle Has Landed).

If only George Lucas had used a similar approach in the invasion of Naboo, having real people fighting back instead of pixels.

So I watched "The Battle Of River Plate" last night as recommended by someone on this list. All 2 hours.

BORING! 2 hours of film, with just 10 minutes of story.

It was great to see Bernard Lee in something other then Bond, but this film could have been 30 min. long.

For example, there is lots of pointless exposition showing the transfer of men and equipment from one ship to another. It slows things down way too much, and if it was more directly related to the point of the story, I could understand its inclusion. it's obviously there to pad the movie. But at 2 hours, this film does not need padding. What it needs is a script that can carry the film for 2 hours.

The direction, editing, and script are just substandard. Even for a 1956 film. About half way into the movie there is a traditional sea battle (based on a real events) with some very cheesy effects mind you. Then just as the movie is starting to become a bit more exciting, the plot really thickens and there is the promises of Bernard Lee and a band of captured British sailors escaping from their brig and causing mayhem for the Germans on board the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee as it's being chased and fired on by a closing British task force. But no!!!! Just as things are about to get very exciting, ALL STOP! We are suddenly in a harbor of a neutral South American nation, and that can only mean one thing. That's right! It's time for a MUSICAL NUMBER. Complete with Carmen Miranda rip off.

Yes, it's now a gay and festive South American musical flavored comedy. With a sudden story focus turning from war battle responsibilities of ships captains, to a wacky girl grabbing (sorry, dame grabbing) American radio newsman named Mike Fowler. No more battles or shooting for the next 60 min. But to be fair, you do get an exploding toy model before it all ends.

Now this movie is based on a true event, and the director completely cut out one of the most dramatic elements of the entire incident. That is the fate of the German Captain just four days after the battle.

Oh, and that they thought they could substitute a U.S. Navy Heavy Cruiser (the USS Salem) as the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee was purely ridicules.

This film can be seen FREE online at: http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/drama/watch/v16247411822rxtad

"Is that Leeegal?"

The pace of the film isn't to everyone's taste, the bulk of the film is a battle of manners.

It's not a film for viewers expecting constant visual action scenes.

Some of the production anachronisms were down to the US Navy (brought in to bring the budget down) refusing to put on German

uniforms or allow their ship to be dressed to even remotely resemble the German vessel.

It is still a remarkable film for showing both sides in as human beings who would possibly be friends if their nations weren't at war with each other.

The scenes of crewmen enjoying shore leave during the impasse are only jarring if you are expecting an action movie.

Shows like that would have been common place back then and navy personnel do like to chat up ladies so I don't have a problem with those scenes.

Shoah may not be for you (it's 9hrs long and on the surface it's talking heads all the way, but in my book it's not only one of the best films about events that took place in WWII but also the most gripping and horrific film ever made).

As this is an ideas thread it is possible to have edits covering the whole spectrum of sabre colour rationales (including what looks nice).

Though personally the blue for Jedi up until Luke in ROTJ makes a whole lot of sense to me.

When Luke loses his father's sabre it's like the end of one era and when he builds his new one it feels like the beginning of a new one and warrants Vader's fascination when he first inspects it.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>

Actually I wactched it again the other day, and there's something that could be called a mistake, or maybe jsut an inconsistency. When Vader and Obi-Wan meet on the Death Star in the original, Vader's saber is already lit up (which I liked, in that he really was waiting for him right there), in Revisited, it's not on, and he lights it up as he walks towards him. This is grand, but the noise his saber makes as it lights up is not the noise Vader's saber makes in ESB and ROTJ, it's the standard "woosh" of Luke and Obi-Wan's sabers, as opposed to the higher and sharper ESB/ROTJ one.

In the prequels, all the Jedi sabers use the "woosh" sound, all the Sith sabers use the Vader one. I guess this has offically been designated the "Jedi Lightsaber Sound" and "Sith Lightsaber Sound", but I, for one, don't welcome anything from the prequels, so that is moot to me. What isn't moot, is that Vader's sounds different in ESB and ROTJ, and since it was not seen lighting up in the original ANH, I'd call it a legitimate inconsistency.

Pointless complaining now of course, since Adywan is long finished on ANH:R, but it's one of the very few things that bugs me in the edit, so I thought I'd say it.

I'll have to listen again (more incentive).

True Ady wont be doing ANH:R:R but you can mention it on the previously mentioned After Ady thread.

As a proof of concept it works very well, sure all the other colours are shifted out but that wasn't the point of the exercise.

I'm really beginning to enthuse about the idea of blue for Jedi, red for Sith and green for Luke in ROTJ.

I know it doesn't appeal to everyone but it's sits well with me.

Something as simple as a colour acting as a metaphor of rebirth, love it.

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

This is a thread about ESB:R there is a bit of wiggle room in any thread for jokes and asides and if and when Mr Ghostface makes a comment it makes sense to respond to him.

It is also understandable that people will defend Adywan's diligence (even if they have constructive criticisms to make) in threads dedicated to his projects.

I'm sure if Mr Ghostface produced a project to a similar standard people would do the same on a related thread.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Ady does with the Leia's room continuity issue now that he has said it's back on the to do list.

Remember back when we had actors like Charlton Heston? Who'd refuse to do sequels on principle, feeling that ultimately they could never be quite as good as their predecessor.

This is why he had such a small role in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. He didn't want to do the film at all, but since they couldn't do it without him, he offered to do it if they would kill off his character in the first ten minutes. They agreed, and later asked him if they could modify the first ten minutes thing in order to have him killed in the climax, but still write it in such a way that he still only has about ten minutes or so screen time, which obviously he agreed to. He also suggested they blow up the planet at the end of the film, and was happy when they decided to go with that, because he thought that would mean there couldn't be any more sequels at all... :D

Anyway, too bad more actors don't take this kind of approach and pride to their acting careers. Instead, they have no problem doing the same thing over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over... so long as they keep getting paid for it.

I love Beneath The Planet Of The Apes it used to give me nightmares as a child, I also like Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (even if the political side of the side is rather heavy handed). I've always had a taste for the bleak.
