I have no idea how the Mary Sue archetype can be remotely be described as sexist (it hasn’t been used to hold down generations of women if anything isolating the trope enhances female characters in Fiction) but even if it is it has nothing to do with the thread title so perhaps we should stop going on about it or open up a thread in off topic.

VINYLVINYLVINYL!
Time

The earliest CD presentations were very tinny. The AAD discs being the worst of the bunch.
Over time though they have got a lot better. A good well looked after DDD set should sound perfectly good and be better than even a pristine vinyl recording.
What people tend to mean when they compare the sounds isn’t so much the recording but the manner by which those recordings are played back.
Speaker tech is becoming more and more amazing but around the eighties and nineties when CD first came along you needed really well engineered speakers to get the best out of records.
Along with the speakers you had the warmth and clarity of valves. If you are used to playing a tune on vinyl through a really good amplifier and then put a CD or an MP3 player through generic equipment you will feel the earlier technology as being a richer experience. But if you were to get the equivalent equipment now and play a modern recording through it you’d have to be blinded by nostalgia to honestly say the high end of the past sounded better than the high end of the present.
The quality of modern music however is another story for another day.
I disagree about the value of culture during a post flare apocalypse though. If you are fighting for tinned peas you will need Tina Turner and if the internal circuits of your iSplode are dead you will be thankful for a wind up gramophone. Trust me. I’ve seen your future.

Legacy of Sequel Trilogy?
Time

Okay after hearing Ben’s ‘nostalgia for Weimar’ we were led to believe that before the Empire the world was a better place and the Empire just ruined it all.
But if ESB told us one thing it’s Ben is not a reliable narrator.
I could have handled a muddier peek at the galaxy he grew up in IF that world was convincing.
Not only are the Jedi not what you expect in the PT from watching the OT they are bizarrely stupid and kind of creepy. However I would draw issue with you saying the Sith were more adaptive and less stupid.
Palpatine is kind of smart but that’s really more a manifestation of him not being as bizarrely stupid as almost everybody else. It’s like someone dimension shifted Henry Kissinger into the world of Idiocracy(2006). And that too could be fun, Richard III is fun, Black Adder is fun. If Palpatine had been the focus of the story it could have been delecious.
If the OT was the story of the struggle of a slowly growing band of Rebels against an oppressive Tyrannical Empire, the PT is the story of one clever man playing two sets of badly directed assholes against each other. My only real objection to the PT are the scripts and how they are delivered.
The whole saga seems to be fueled by nostalgia (from the characters and the audience).
The OT is born of nostalgia from a myriad of different sources (only some of which are space opera). The PT and the ST are built on nostalgia for it.
In terms of what the characters are doing the main driving characters yearn for a past or play on such feelings.
Palpatine feeds Padme the line of the Republic ain’t what it used to be, he feeds Anakin tales of how great the Sith were and that the Jedi aren’t as selfless and heroic as they make out to be. In his Sith guise he feeds the Trade Federation the promise of a return to an age without regulation getting in the way of conquest and plunder.
Obi-Wan feeds Luke the line of things were better before the Empire, Owen feeds Ben the line of things being better before he turned up, Lando is keeping a bubble of the past floating in the sky and is willing to sacrifice old friends and old ships to protect it, Luke is pushing on Vader the line that Anakin was a better man than Vader.
In TFA so far we have the Resistance seemingly nostalgic of a time when they had the whole galaxy to liberate. Ren and the First Order in general are nostalgic for the certainties the Empire seemed to provide, to the point of dressing in versions of old Imperial uniforms and venerating relics of his fallen grandfather. The nostalgia generated by the Jedi, in particular Luke but fetishised by Anakin’s saber is a major part of the story. The nostalgia Han and Chewie feel for their glory days on the Falcon is also a big chunk of that movie.
It seems no matter if the story looks forwards or backwards it’s always looking at a past. It’s a space opera set a long time ago. So if it’s true to form it will keep doing that.

By the way that concept art is sorta proof that the people behind TFA weren’t lying on their arses and blatantly making a reboot of A New Hope. They consciously, with EFFORT, decided to go for the look we ended up seeing. Otherwise, if you see what I mean, the concept art would be redundant.

Or they had interesting new ideas but ditched some of them for brand recognition reasons.

None of the concept art proves the plot would have been vastly different if these ideas were
implemented into the film.

The presentation of plot points in some cases were visually less similar to the OT in general and ANH specifically. In other cases it’s the other way around. The Jedi Killer concepts are pointedly more Vader like than Rylo Ken for one example.
The plot beats would still be very similar to ANH but making them look different would mask the similarity. Clearly a choice was made to make the similarity more obvious for branding purposes.
I personally think this was an error that an ambitious editor might be able to have some fun and success with.

If someone were to do a Ady style refresh I would have liked to see Jakku as it’s shown in some of the concept paintings.
So it could keep the sand but have flooded trenches and canyons looking like canals.
This would make the planet look less like Tatooine and quite unique to the series :

The Place to Go for Emotional Support

Absolutely. Just wouldn’t feel comfortable opening up myself.

The reason I asked is if you could volunteer some time to help people in a similar situation as yourself you could talk about your own experiences contextually.

So if a chap was talking about how low he felt and how the thoughts of suicide were becoming frequent and pressing you could express your solidarity by recounting some experiences of your own and maybe share some of your coping strategies with him.
Usually the training given for such roles is as useful for yourself as it would be for the people you might help.

It’s just an idea but it might be worth just looking around and seeing what sort of voluntary services are around that you could help out with and in turn receive some help from by the act of helping.

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread

Most people here will watch the films in the order made but there will be some younger viewers or general newbies who will go chronologically.

Episode 1 is called Episode 1 not Episode -3 so in my book the PT should work both ways, as a film trilogy you watch after the originals to see some of the back story and as the first three episodes which do not spoil the next three.

My preferred option is for Obi-Wan to say “Your Mother wanted you to have this” which suggests that Owen knew Luke’s mother and then later change Vader’s line in ROTJ to “Your Mother once felt as you do”.
This would bring a very important female albeit by reference only to an OT that is sadly lacking in many.

This is the kind of talk you need to share with your therapist.

I agree but it’s also very welcome that people talk about this any and everywhere. The stigma around the subject particularly with the male of the species is best dispelled by just openly talking about it and actively listening to such testimony.

Do we all know where we all know our local helplines etc ?
Do we have a real world friend we can talk to openly on the subject?

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

Most jobs come from networking these days so I recommend volunteering for peer befriending or something like that. There is training where you will meet new people, you are giving your time for something you have some interest and experience in (repetitive 9to5 drudge isn’t good for mental wellbeing) and you add new skills and references to your resume. You are still around after experiencing the emotions that got this conversation rolling. Helping someone else keep to even that level of functioning is a rewarding experience.
It certainly has helped me not be trapped in the house with a shouty drunk person to come home and think I helped someone today. Shouty drunk person you are wrong. I have some value to society 😛
These are exactly the sorts of attitudes employers like to see.
Take a look at what skills you do have (writing, digital tech experience etc) and see who needs it.
Also think of what you’d like to be paid for doing and see if someone needs it done for free.
The best customer feedback comes from people who need something and someone gives it to them.

Warb, I have no idea if the poor kid is still alive physically but the nurse told me that there wasn’t much in the way of corrective therapy. His brain was damaged by the overdose. Physical therapy and surgery might have been able to stop some of his actions but in terms of the self it was just gone enough be beyond function but not still there enough to be restored.

It was truly horrific for me as a casual observer so heavens knows what his poor mother had to go through. It was her prescribed medication he used.
The thought of bringing a child into the world and they using something of yours to not quite kill themselves really puts anything the world throws at me into perspective.
You are a long time dead so you might as well give life a good go.

As for development, some children are probably fit to escape the nest at nine, some never, if you use an arbitrary age to say “job done” you are pretty awful as a parent. That it works for some is no excuse. If you decide to create a life you should be an available presence for the rest of your days (In my opinion which isn’t law or the last word on anything). Honour from children is not a given it needs to earned. It’s not an alchemical reaction of egg plus sperm.

Well, aside from my dumbshit parents and sister, I have no one to talk to, and I’m not going to bring this up with them; all they’d do is wag their finger at me, throw empty Bible quotes in my face, and/or make fun of my situation.

Your family could have easily thrown you out of the house and never talked to you again the second you turned 18. Be careful when bashing the people who provide for you.

I haven’t met any of your parents but in my opinion anything less than tolerance is bad parenting. Children don’t ask to be born. Yes is good to be respectful when possible but if a parent thinks their job finishes when their child reaches 18 it would probably have been better if they hadn’t started in the first place.
I don’t think in this instance someone who is suffering a crisis should seek assistance from the sort of person they have a low opinion of, regardless of if that low opinion is earned or not.

At the risk of showing my signature haughtiness, you are currently using this here internet thing. Let your fingers do the walking to your search engine of choice and type in your locality and “men’s mental health services” or various combinations of the above.
And don’t rule out the Samaritans who despite their name are a faith neutral organisation. They will listen to you non-judgmentally and should be able to point you in the direction of peer support.
If you get stuck PM me and I will let my fingers do the walking for you. The tubby bitches could do with some exercise 😃
While we are on the subject of talking let’s not avoid the biggy.
When I was hospitalised with pneumonia I was plopped onto the respiratory ward. Way wayyyy off in a separate room we old wheezers would have our quality coughing time disturbed by the sound of a man crying out. Naturally I asked what was happening. I managed to get from one of the nurses that a young man in a similar situation to what Warb, myself and you have experienced had had enough and took his mum’s insulin pills.
One thing about the internet is you read forums like this one and people write stuff about how the prequels make them suicidal or how the want to kill themselves because a fan edit is taking too long.
On my way to having a camera shoved into my lung I was wheeled by the guy’s room. He was in his twenties, physically fit, conventionally attractive in normal circumstances but the nurses couldn’t keep the guy still enough to brush his hair or shave his chin. His muscles and tendons were in perpetual tension. He was covered in sweat and the human distress as be screamed touched my soul more than anything I’ve seen before or since.
Talking, it doesn’t solve everything but it does keep the light of life on long enough for the chemistry to change. If that guy had grabbed a phone instead of the wrong pills he would have a chance at a life with good days in it.
I don’t direct this at you in particular but at anyone reading this at any time. Talk about what is on your mind and listen when someone talks about pain.
Health is a road we wander up and down on. This includes mental health. If you find yourself in physical pain you go and tell someone and they help you deal with it. Emotional pain, mental pain, is the same thing.
Help is out there, seek it, use it get better and pass it on.
