Somehow, I remember being surprised that the line "close the blast doors" was said by a calm woman's voice, as if it were an automated voice coming over an intercom.

Maybe you're thinking of Star Trek III? (There's an automated female P.A. voice saying "space doors are closed" etc. when they steal the ship.)

Boycott Star Wars on Blu-ray
Time

If it's no originals and just the 2004 versions, I guess I'm boycotting. But...maybe...it will be a new version where the changes are subtle! Where they don't stick out like...er, yeah, I can't even finish that. Boycott. (I just realized they restored and branched old and new versions of EIGHTY Star Trek episodes! And LFL can't be bothered with this? The hell?)

Are there any shots from the original Apocalypse that aren't in Redux?

I wonder what Lucas' feelings are about easter egg-type scene branching, like with T2 where you can watch it with the alternate future ending. So let's say, buried in the menu somewhere, is the option to to watch Star Wars with the original death star battle or original Mos Eisley. That's where the worst, most obvious new stuff is. (Instead of complex branching of many shots, just have a whole alternate reel in there, the movie is short enough, I think)

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Would it kill them to throw us a bone and include some kind of cool option to just watch the movie so it branches off to the original death star battle? Or to the old ending to Jedi?  Hell, my 5 dollar disc of Buckaroo Banzai has the option to watch it with a different opening. But it would probably take up valuable disc space reserved for a Wii game promo.

I love the scene. The dialogue is definitely stitched together from old stuff, some of it might be alternate takes. Is it possible the scene was originally played without dialogue at all, but became subject to the same "people won't understand, everything must be over-explained" mindset that we've become so used to?

I demand that we get to see Larry Ackbar!!! ;-)

Lucas making the show or not making the show seems to have no bearing on if we get the OOT or not.  Are they really mutually exclusive?

Well, he just said the cost is what prevents a restoration. He's willing to spend the same dough on the one thing but not the other, that's all.

Save Star Wars Dot Com

This is a tricky topic when it comes to trying to preach beyond the choir, ("it looks so much better and more colorful now, how can it be a mistake?"). One suggestion: to me, the most striking thing is that before and after image of the stars disappearing, I would lead with that, right at the top. That, and lots of before and after lightsaber pictures, they speak the loudest. That pink 2004 saber next to the proper 1980 one is an image even a kid can understand.

Showing of THX 1138 in Los Angeles area!
Time

Pretty sure it's never been released. I don't think anyone even knows exactly what the cuts were anymore. (With Graffiti, I believe we know it's two distinct scenes that were cut and then put back in post-star wars.)  It's too bad when you consider a movie like Mr. Arkadin can get 3 distinct versions on the dvd. Okay, maybe it's not really a crime against history/film preservation, it's more a measure of douchey-ness. You'd think it would be flattering that anyone cares enough to want to see this stuff.

The making of the new version THX is an interesting, mysterious thing that apparently no one involved ever talks about or acknowledges. Yet it was pretty extensive and was done smack in the middle of Revenge of the Sith. And it wasn't just a matter of replacing old shots with new ones, some real thought went into it, it's very meticulous compared to the hamhanded trilogy stuff. Whole scenes are moved around, etc.

The Graffiti shot is minor but it's kind of a perfect microcosm of how this computer fetish grabbed Lucas. It's a sunset/magic hour shot that you normally would have to go outside and wait around for, dealing with other human beings the whole time. Discovering that you could do that while sitting on your ass inside your tastefully decorated giant NoCal coffeehouse, was probably like finding gold.

The marvels have the right tone and had the right idea with smaller scale stories. The 90s-and on stories from the modern era are actually more unintentionally hilarious. Besides being overly serious, this catastrophic stuff just keeps. on. happening to these people. It turned Luke and the gang into Kenny from South Park.

Didn't it turn out that the death star walls were straight black but then Gil Taylor had them quickly repainted to be something, anything, that would show up better. And the throne room in Jedi was like a do-over attempt, like "how black can we get away with? (and the answer is none. none more black.")

Anyway the new website looks to be really cool, zombie. For what it's worth I still had this still of the 77 theater screen, can't remember exactly where I grabbed it though.

The more eyes that see this- the better. :-)

Good idea. (The force.net and the official site have a blurb every time a new sticker book comes out but didn't mention this.)
