Why we love the prequels @ SW.com
Time

I don't get why we can't all get along and accept people have differing opinions without cutting them down and judging them or their motives. It's all OPINION anyway not fact.

Generally you're right. But in this case, maybe the opinions of this new breed of superfans are having an actual consequence: they help keep the original movies from being taken care of properly. Maybe LFL might come up with some real quality discs if these minions weren't so easy to please. (there was a review of the Family Guy Star Wars who said it's the perfect union because it's the two fan groups with the lowest standards).

005: Excellent job on getting those wipes. I hadn't realized they basically just covered over the pre-existing wipes. On some it seems like they went back to the original pieces and did new ones, but the timing is never the same.
This one is probably the most obvious early start of a wipe, its almost completely done before the original begins!

This confuses me. I don't understand why it was necessary for the new wipes to start at a different time if they were using the original negative. Did they just say "eh, close enough"?

So they have changed Obi-Wan's roar again. I'm dreading to think what it sounds like this time especially when they said it will sound more human and that it will sound like someone. OH god.

The hell? I think the world has been punk'd and Lucasfilm actually consists of about 6 computer guys playing with their toys. I'm picturing this:

Who (if anyone) saw the Holiday Special in 1978 before they ever saw Star Wars?
Time

Anyone who's been bored/drunk enough to watch lots of 70s stuff on youtube can tell you the holiday special is a pretty standard network variety show, like the type they'd crank out nightly.  The shittiness of it stands out way more now. At least the cartoon is pretty cool. (And it's on film, I wonder if they still have it to put on the blu-ray.)

I quickly found and inserted all of the wipes and fades I could find, along with an additional SE change (another extended shot).

Very interesting, thanks for doing that.

About Raiders, I vaguely recall that the 90s laserdisc had a few redone sound effects that were then reverted back to the original for the dvd. (In particular, the sound when Indy drops the staff into the map room)

It's really thorough and impressive, gotta love it. It represents some real care and labor. Maybe it's too crass to do this, but I would love to put a real dollar amount on the cost of a potential transfer in there and have it very prominent on the front page. I've heard it's doable for about 75 grand, but I don't know if that's reliable. (I guess the lowest number that yields a good basic vanilla disc is best for the sake of making a point). Maybe put it up in the corner next to a "stock ticker" of Lucasfilm's worth. Anyway, really good work.

The Special Edition wasn't needed.

Because the true artist is never truly happy with what they create.  They are always striving to better themselves; it's what keeps them trying

Now be honest: If Fox owned Star Wars and Lucas would never see any money from working on the special editions except minimum wage and a turkey sandwich, AND they told him he had to fly down to LA. to supervise the animation, would this true artist still do it?

Well he has everything in storage, just like he says in the dewback clip. Everything you would need for a Godfather-style project is right there. The "expense" and "effort" is just so very, very enormous, that's the problem. It's only Star Wars, not something major that passes through the labs in Burbank every day, like BUSTY COPS 2.

I'm pretty sure at least the last frame of Han's closeup ("yes, I'll bet you have") is gone. Maybe because it was spliced to the new super-important shot that now comes after.

The 97 does look good there. It's so annoying that that version is just as good to go as any theatrical release from 97, like CON AIR, and yet it's too much work to do it plus 5 minutes worth of original shots.

It is neither unecessary or unmotivated (how do you work that one out, fella?  How does carping and negativity motivate anyone other than to continue to it all the more, especially when the braying gallery is urging them on?) to complain about negativity?

If someone does something that is perceived to be bad and then does something that is good, is the good deed then ignored in favour of the bad?

Turning to the Dark Side: PT vs. OT
Time

I've seen all three prequels a bunch of times and I still have no clue how attachment led to the dark side. He was so worried about his wife staying alive, he choked her. Wha? And wasn't the original cut of SITH more in line with JEDI? In other words, killing for the revenge/pleasure of it leads to the dark side. Killing Dooku in Anakin's case, killing Vader in Luke's case (if he had gone through with it).

Well, that sounds really weird to me as 1997 was the year DVD first appeared and very few people heard about it and he didn't release the films on it for another 7 years.

Dvd wasn't some obscure mystery in 97, it was a new thing but it was in mainstream stores everywhere and had been on the boards a long time. He participated in the Graffiti dvd less than a year later. He only waited 7 years because he's a pain in the ass that way.

Sequels were made and watched in a very different way back then. Everyone has a raging boner for continuity and tonal consistency now, but it just didn't matter as much to the average, non-starlog reader. That's why it was ok for James Bond to meet Blofeld in one movie and then meet him again in the very next. It just wasn't a big deal.

I think the shift in sequel-making mentality might have begun after Temple of Doom was so deliberately, gleefully, different in tone than Raiders and people got all pissed.
