Actually, I am sad to say, the first TJ Hooker dvd flopped, that's why they never released the subsequent seasons. (don't ask how I remember that, I'm full of useless home video info at this point)

This is really not that complicated. They don't have to split the atom to do this. They will not lose money on it. They will not need much effort to do it. They do it all the time, I just came from Burbank where every day the labs are churning out this exact work for tons of movies you've never heard of. It's not a big deal. Sansweet and the junior sansweets are painting it as some unreasonable thing when it's just not.

This is why these guys are all such pissers, they don't care. I wouldn't expect him to put his job on the line over this. I wouldn't expect the average person to care at all. But these are major Star Wars fans yet somehow they just don't care, and Sansweet is just the most extreme and public example. He has a list that looks like this:
Original movies-Don't care
All variations of kids' Boss Nass underpants-Do care
How do you even argue with this mindset, it's like a different language.
The guy with the separate house for his doll collection wants us to grow up.
It was just a ham-fisted attempt to get kids and schlubs to like the movies better and buy the toys. And it worked.
It's not a big deal, but it feels like kids get sort of gypped if they don't have something that's totally new, instead of our warmed-over leftovers.

When this comes up in outside circles, I think it might be worth mentioning that he is not the sole director, writer or financier of those 3 movies. I don't think the general public is aware of that anymore.
The funny thing is, the super-duper intense fans barely seem to have any actual fun with it either now, it's more like this intensely personal, religious/OCD thing.
Man, I've tried but I'm totally incapable of watching those discs without becoming hyper-aware of how much better ICE PIRATES looks. As for the EU, is the Heir to the Empire trio still considered the best? I know I read it back then, vaguely remember the third book was kind of a slog to get through, but may have to give it another look. Is there an ongoing comic now that is post-Episode III or is that still off-limits for the TV show?
It stopped being fun when this thing came out. The sheer low-class stink of that one act put an unpleasant perspective on everything LFL deems worthy of doing. (and not doing). Makes me feel like a chump for supporting anything they put out.
Are we already at the part where the warsies stand up for chintzy work? This is why they don't need sansweet at all.
Ideally, the Jedi book should be the most revealing if it's done right. It will probably be surprising how EMPIRE is perceived as such a not-masterpiece throughout 1981. And how much of JEDI is a deliberate reaction to the not-uncommon notion that EMPIRE just wasn't fun enough.

I guess the only reason it means anything in the context of this forum, is that he was out there in 2006, the official voice of Lucasfilm, saying how great the original version dvds were going to be and how lucky we were that LFL had graciously deigned to bless us with their release.
Maybe LFL realized there's no reason to keep paying this guy when there's already a bunch of guys out there on the internet who will shill the products and preach the approved gospel and do it for free.
These bloggers only write about stuff that stirs the shit. The altering/suppressing of the original versions is so much worse than the prequels but it's easier to say people are just upset about a fictional world and make everyone involved sound like an unreasonable nut.
Too bad, since presenting the preservation angle can stir shit too, that always brings out loyal superfans who will say they are purely his work, he has the moral right to do what he wants with them, etc. etc.. (Which ignores the fact that the trilogy he's altering is made up of one movie that he didn't finance and 2 that he didn't direct.) Anyway, this one's better:

On the other hand it's getting hard to tell for sure out there. Some real freakos among the prequel-heads have emerged lately. Real touchy zealots, I figure we're about 7 years away from our first Star Wars jihadist.
The book is pretty great, and it's huge. I'm having a hard time finding a comfortable place to sit and read the thing. I love how passionate and honest everyone is at this point in 78/79, everything is so guarded and phony now. (like Harrison Ford saying Force 10 from Navarone was "dogshit". I can't imagine him saying that about any of his recent movies.)
I forgive you Lucas. Whatever that means. (Some people are so melodramatic about Star Wars. Do the guys who write these articles know that Lucas is not our dad?)
