Anakin's fall to the Dark Side
Time

It's interesting how by that point, it was so easy to write Anakin off as merely a dumb fuck, I just accepted anything he did.

It's a pretty fascinating topic to pore through, how the movie was semi-remade before it ever came out. But it was always tough to really discuss it because fans get very defensive, as if Anakin is a real person or some shit. I'm very curious to see those scenes from the 2003 shooting.

Lucas' Red Tails
Time

I think only that they were up at the ranch being interviewed in the early 2000s, beyond that, not sure. I wonder if the "inspired by" true events thing means that it ended up being more fictionalized then they originally intended. It looks decent, it's interesting how the reaction to the CGI varies so much from person to person. We seem to be at the point where you have people who expect it to look utterly real, as if it's just an event that was photographed, and others who recognize it's not real but still find it appealing.

What do you think was the best release of the OT at the time it came out?
Time

With Star wars, in a way it feels like it's evolving backwards. Only because in those days the pirate home video tapes were just like additional gravy, since the movie was also available to see in the theater pretty much anytime, often in 70mm, for literally months and years. Now theater showings are basically forbidden.  (and contrast that with Indiana Jones as shown here: http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=18467&page=22

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Yet with little fanfare plenty of movies manage to clean the scratches and get the color right so it's not a big deal until we have these weird guys and their personalities entering the mix. Gordon Willis says this (about the blu of All the President's Men:

it's all fucked up...all the medium tones [are wrong] and contrast is way higher than it oughta be....it's overloaded. They don't get it. They get on those fucking dials...it's a disease. Their idea for a Bluray is to make it for guys who are watching football.""And what are they gonna say?," he said. "We're sorry and we'll do it all over again? You call these guys, it's like talking to a head on a stick."

So basically all it takes for a hugely respected cinematographer to get hosed is one or 2 of those tech support guys who get a little taste of authority.

Are we supposed to believe Leia rode in the cargo hold of the X-Wing, or that they abandoned a perfectly good Y-Wing on Tattooine in the middle of a war? ;)

Well...Luke did abandon his X-wing on Cloud City. It magically reappears. Unless the Alliance just gave him another expensive ship to simply replace the one he left sitting around.

I'm waiting for the LOBOT CHRONICLES tv show, which will show how he flew Luke's X-Wing out of there, looking for a job as one of those reverse-lobot guys in Flash Gordon.

The Millenium Falcon and its missing conceptual development
Time

It sounds like it was a real emergency re-design so I guess it's not that odd that there isn't much documentation, it could have been over a weekend. (I drive by the crappy old ILM building all the time and it's amazing what a shoestring operation it must have been, it's pretty awesome. One more reason it's such a shame when any of that early Macgyver work is replaced)

So according to the only article about the restoration, it doesn't even sound like they cleaned it in 1080p, but 480p (which is crazy).

My favorite part of that article-Jim Ward 2004: it’s hardly a controversy. We sold over $100 million in one day of this DVD around the world, so I don’t think anybody’s too upset about it. And any changes that George made, they might be controversial to about 5 people.”

vs. Jim Ward 2006:" a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward

The prequels' influence on pop-culture?
Time

I wonder if the clone wars cartoon may end up having more influence in the long run, only because we've seen how a weekly cartoon can worm it's way into people's brains for years to come if they're the right age. Look at how Transformers and Thundercats and all that stuff never goes away. I can't really tell how popular clone wars is these days, but I assume it's pretty successful. (Although I don't really get it, it feels like I'm watching Veggie Tales or some shit to me)

The only version of SG not available on DVD is the 106 min US theatrical release which contains a side shot of SG flying as she's about to fly out of the Phantom Zone into Selena's fortress not seen in any other cut.

Is that the version that was in that big chunky VHS box? That brings back memories. I had that and the ABC version of II from 1988, I can't believe i tossed both of them, duh!

What do you LIKE about the Prequels?
Time

There's stuff in the various old books/articles about how Lucas had to fight to have Greedo speak with subtitles and how strongly he felt it added to the atmosphere of the whole thing (and how it was actually meant to be an unexpected novelty for Admiral Ackbar to speak regular english). But when FRINGE-Lucas came through the vortex and switched with ours in 1995, he just really thought Hanna Barbara voices were hilarious.
