Needless to say, the lie got bigger and imploded. I tried looking for the thread on their forum couple years back.

Ah, thanks. I'm actually surprised how much of that stuff was right. (I don't get wanting to know all that stuff ahead of time, or the desire to leak it.)

Agreed. (also, "the Yoda farts" what now?) Anyway I prefer the term "Transmorpher" personally. From what I can tell, TFN is essentially the Alamo for those guys (the last place left where the post -'97 dogma is still super sacred or whatever) but in the long run I can't imagine that being good for them. It only took 8 or 9 zealots to make it thoroughly unpleasant there (you could name them if you spent about a week) and chase away any interesting talk/casual shooting the shit.

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

For awhile it was going to be AN EVENT, a touchstone moment for a new generation that had never seen blah blah blah. It ended up preaching to the choir and doing quite well for a 13 year old movie I guess. Which is fine, whatever, a great accomplishment, millions of dollars, lots of rendering time and shit, etc. So, well done, and here's to spending money and a year of life on episode 2, feel the excitement.

Info Wanted: Is this amateur audio recording of Star Wars in '77 any use?
Time

I wonder if this ad represents a fair picture of what the breakdown was like when it comes to how widespread stereo was in a given city. (I believe small towns were not necessarily the last to get it, what with 70s urban decay and everything)

Ithanks for contributing the recordings, Protocol)

Not to derail the thread, but how do Lucas-apologists (TFNers... whatever we call them) value McQuarrie?

You should ask dgr4 that question. She's one TFNer who justs loves to deemphasize the collaborative nature of the SW films.

(It's been awhile but I think dgr is a dude?) But anyway the answer is: no, Mcquarrie is not particularly valued, nobody else from the '77-'83 period means much of anything to the cult, it's just like asking a scientologists about someone who left the church.

Maybe you should change the title to something about the OT losing it's stature.

I don't think it will though. At least not any more than any other movie. The problem is every movie loses some status over enough time. When they inevitably remake THE GODFATHER and you see all the grown adults come out of the woodwork who have never seen it and/or are bored to death by it, that'll be clear. Every movie eventually becomes a fairly niche thing.

Star Wars Colortiming & Cinematography (was What changes was done to STAR WARS in '93?)

Nice!

semi-related: One thing that is interesting to me about the technidisc laser is that for some reason it's the most flattering to the matte painting of the soldiers during the end ceremony. (thanks to mysycamore I've become a big fan of that disc. It's not as blah as the gout, and unless it was left outside on the porch after 1993, I think that source could make a great basis for a Blade Runner-disc 3-type restoration. All the little dings and specks are really not any worse than the stuff dealt with years ago for ERASERHEAD, which I believe was self-financed by Lynch)

Yeah I probably would have shelled out if not for the blu-ray BS, I've paid for much dumber movie experiences.

I don't know if scoring a win with the TFN guys qualifies as "people paying hand over fist" but lurking over the weekend they seem to have decided that this release is an amazing success, unprecedented for a 13 year old movie. (just discovered I can't log in there anymore, make sure nobody tells them about  The Exorcist Director's Cut (2000) - Box Office Mojo or   E.T. (20th Anniversary) (2002) - Box Office Mojo) especially don't mention 10 years of inflation and non-3D tickets

Well, there was a trailer and poster, not sure how extensive it was, pretty sure it was a wide release.

edit-who can compete with Porky's Revenge anyway

Weekend Box Office Results for March 29-31, 1985 - Box Office Mojo

It was interesting how the 1997 release caused EMPIRE and JEDI to switch places. As for Phantom passing star wars on the list like it means something, shee-yit. A 3D ticket here is 19.50, vs. 2 bucks or less in 1977, get real.

In 1985 there was a re-release of JEDI that was a total non-event, and was pretty much part of the last gasp of SW, entering its lowest point of popularity.  In tickets sold it's not that far off from this much more expensive reissue, so what does it take for LFL to acknowledge any kind of flaw in their M.O.? (the M.O. being: really little kids are the only thing that matters, the rest of you who supported this thing for 20 years can suck it. Maybe it's a little off-putting? Maybe?)
