Dark Knight Rises - Now that we know the cast
Time

Nolan has stamped Batman pretty distinctly for the majority of the world, I know  bloggery computer guys are going through the 3rd movie with a red pen these days, but its still going to be pretty definitive for everyone else for a long time. The justice league movie has 2 big hills to climb, establishing a new Batman so soon and not appearing to just be the RC cola version of Avengers.

What's the status of the Originals? (the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy)
Time

Unfortunately this always feels like these guys need to justify the existence and importance of their gig. Not that they don't care or aren't talented, but man. Last year when they did the press for the bluray, at home theater forum, Matthew Wood went on about how harsh and hissy the 77 movie sounded, it was almost verbatim the way they talked about SUPERMAN years earlier, basically if a modern audience heard the old mix your ears would melt, and TERMINATOR is about to come out with the same issue.

It would be fine if they don't use the negative, it's too easy to screw up and anyway it's Joan Rivers at this point. Just in the last few years they can do all kinds of great restoration on other sources, it would be no muss no fuss. (But ignoring the negative and basically just using a tape from 2004 for the 3D version is kind of weird too, I don't envy the people who have to disentangle all this now).

Wonder what the odds are on WILLOW making it through unchanged. It's funny how perception and promotion of farting around with these movies has changed in a few short years, in 1997 the changes were heavily promoted, now it's like hey the movie was always like this. (Culminating in 2004 with THX1138, still the heavyweight champ of abusing the word "restoration")

Since episode 7 is coming in 2015 I'd figure the 3D was being accelerated to be done before that, either way I'm optimistic the originals will get done, there's only a few clowns hanging on to the idea that its financially unreasonable and doesn't have enough demand. (Which, if were true, would contradict the existence of almost every non-new release blu-ray in existence).

What do you LIKE about the EU?

Taking those 3 visual adventure movies and making grown up airport books out of them was a really neat trick that Zahn pulled off, it shouldn't have worked but it did. But it feels like a trick you can only do once and I haven't been able to finish a Star Wars book since then. The Han Solo Ocean's 11 book sounds like a good new angle, it may be the first one I buy in years.

Interesting, since the Biggs scene was put back in 97, the people from the 97 SE would be able to shed light, some of them must be on twitter (hey stranger things have happened, like hearing from Harry Shearer 30 years after the fact). The negative for that scene would have been in a completely different place if it had been in the movie and lifted out vs. if it had never been in at all. (On a small roll of its own with the trims in one place etc.  or still on the big rolls of unused raw negative).

Hah I think of that South Park too. This might be the change with the most varied reactions out there. Completely separate from whether you like yub nub or not, some people think this song is beautiful and moving, others just think it's the worst. Supposedly Lucas gave Williams a temp version of the new ending with this music from a TV miniseries and said "sort of do this."

500 Nations (Powerful Native American music and art) - YouTube

The actual bootleg of the rough '97 version with that music used to be on youtube but it looks like Fox pulled it.

Episodes 1 and 2 and 3 interpreted as comedy

The Kiss
In this scene the audience is left stunned as Anakin begins saying to Padme that, "I don't like sand. It's coarse and irritating and it gets everywhere. Everything here is soft and smooth." You can sense they're going to kiss but you think that you must be wrong because everything up until this point has showed Anakin to be a total numbskull and that she must be creeped out. When they begin kissing you can't help but wonder why it's happening. The music gets loud and grand but then she snaps away...

My first reaction to Hayden was "Return of the Jedi" but my second reaction was maybe he was actually smart enough to recognize how bad the kiss scene was, because he seems to be playing it for a laugh at the end there.

I Finally Changed My Mind
Time

I've heard people referring to "the force runs strong in my family" as merely an early form of midi-chlorian that isn't explicit, but I never got that, since saying it runs in Luke's family doesn't preclude anyone else from having it. And if it was genetic, wouldn't you just make sure all the Jedis were out there doing as much fucking as possible?

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years
Time

From what I've heard, sales of any blu ray that isn't a new release have been shockingly low, and not getting significantly better. I don't see how  that can continue for too long but I'd like to be wrong. Supposedly even always-reliable titles like Wizard of Oz and Godfather fell way, way below projections.
