Ah. I've been there and it seems

There's nothing we could do except to buy another DVD player...You can thank Hollywood for that...

Yeah, the only thing to do with a Toshiba is to buy a mod-chip. My advice to you is to take advantage of the rediculously low prices you will find on cheap DVD Players around Thanksgiving. I pick up a new player every Thanksgiving and just keep it in the box in case anyone ever wants it. I just gave my brother a $20 DVD Player from Best Buy that could easily be hacked to multi-region, could play MP3s, WMA and JPEGs and was Progressive Scan. Keep a look out and check VideoHelp for advice on buying.

Thanks for clearing that up... I have always wondered why the DVDs my in-laws send me are listed as Region "1 y 4" (1 and 4) but are NTSC. I know that other than "1 and 4" they also have just R4 discs in Mexico so that means that their DVD Players are mostly multi-region with NTSC and PAL capabilities.

Good to know

Which makes me want a multi-region DVD player, in addition to getting the Japanese uncut Kill Bill V1 DVD...

Unless I am mistaken, R4 is NTSC. My in-laws are from Mexico so a lot of the DVDs they send me are either R4 or Region "1 y 4" and they are NTSC. Usually the main difference between what they get there in R4 and what we get in the states in R1 is that we cover English and French in NTSC where they cover English, Spanish and Portugese in NTSC.

I'll have to see if my brother-in-law picked up the set to see what he thinks.

As for getting a multi-region DVD player... your typical $20 to $40 DVD Player can easily be made multi-region by hacking via the remote. You might have a multi-region DVD Player at home already and don't realize it. The big guys like Toshiba and Sony use hard-wired region coding in their computer chips but the cheap guys usually just use codes keyed into "secret" menus to change the region so they can make one model and sell it everywhere. Go to VideoHelp.com and look up your player(s) to see what you can do.

Do yourself a favor and hack your player or buy a cheap player that can easily be hacked for multi-region..... I know you like "Army of Darkness"... you really need to get the R3 MGM release... it is the best there is

If I am not mistaken, I believe the whole "leia looks like a whore" comments are coming from the comparison pics I posted a few pages back... somewhere in the 70s.

The comparison pics showed the new 2004 release vs MeBeJedi, TR47 and Dr Gonzo.

Some of the pics made Leia look like a whore with a lot of makeup... it was due to the increased "red" look in the color.

I would look back at the comps but my wife is calling me for Spanish class... gotta go

While I have never tried out the process, DarthGates did an awesome Anamorphic version of the Cartoon Network's "Clone Wars" series and he actually used an existing letterboxed DVD source to create his anamorphic version. He included some very highly detailed instructions with his torrent of the DVD. I'll have to see if I can dig it up because I am interested in using this process on some stuff I have.

As for VideoHelp, that site is a great resource but between work, family, posting to this forum and the RPF, sadly I haven't had any time to post there... but yes, I am registered there... BadAsh or BadAsh71... can't remember

MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)
Time
I just did another DVD Santa convert of Balance, it's done and creating DVD data now, and I just realized - I did it at fullscreen, not widescreen! If it just turns out nonanamorphic I could care less, but....

I have both the Xvid and actual DVD version of BOTF. I checked the Xvid last night and realized that while it is widescreen, it appears to be pretty messed up. It is encoded as 16:9 anamorphic but with burned in black bars at the top and bottom. So, that makes me wonder if you should select 4:3 when encoding through DVD Santa. Not what I would want to do but that might be what you should do. I am tempted to try it tonight to see what happens. It just looks weird that if you load up the Xvid in PowerDVD it plays in Widescreen but with black bars on the top and bottom. Usually if a video rip is widescreen you will not see the top and bottom bars through a software player like PowerDVD. Of course since Star Wars is 2.35:1 and 16:9 TVs are 1.85:1 a small black strip will be displayed at the top and bottom but on your computer it should not show the black bars.

Very strange.

To make your "4x3" set, have you actually zoomed in and cut the edges of the picture off to make a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, or are you calling it "4x3" rather than "non-animorphic" and still leaving it widescreen (2.35:1)?

I believe what MeBeJedi is referring to is the fact that all WideScreen laserdiscs are letterboxed meaning that they are at the correct ration but to make them fit on the standard 4:3 screen black bars are added to the top and bottom. So, what you have in the case of Star Wars is a 2.35:1 image that has had black bars placed on the top and bottom to fill out the full 1.33:1 (4x3) TV screen. This is very unfortunate but necessary considering that we didn't have 16:9 TVs at the time.

That being said, you can get a much better transfer of a letterboxed video source if you crop out the black bars at the top and bottom. If encoding to 4:3 the encoder will add computer generated "black bars" at the top and bottom. These new black bars will be solid black and much cleaner than the fuzzy grayish and pixelated black bars you will get from letterboxed video. Another great thing about cropping out the black bars is that the encoding time will be dramatically reduced.

So, what TR47 obviously did was a direct conversion rather than cropping out the black bars and replacing them with new generated versions. TR47's motive was to give us a transfer that was as close as possible to the letterboxed laserdiscs. However, he could have done the same thing by cropping out the bars. The quality of the video would not have changed.

I hope MeBeJedi is doing this (the cropping) for his non-anamorphic version. If not, MeBeJedi, please crop those bars

Believe me, I have tested this, you will not sacrifice quality on the video by removing the black bars and letting the encoder add them back in... if 4:3 is what you intend to produce.

To all interested, this process of adding the black bars to the video is sometimes called "fraiming" or "re-fraiming". The idea is to preserve the widescreen presentation on a standard 4:3 screen.

FYI, a letterboxed DVD can be made to be 16:9 Anamorphic without re-encoding the DVD... look that one up on VideoHelp kiddies

Please do

Seriously though... the current DL version of the OT was a big waste of time because it was compressed more than it should have been to allow for "extras" to be included on the same disc. While it still was less compressed than TR47 or Dr Gonzo's version, it wasn't by much and thus the outcome was not much of an improvement.

It looks like this thread is already getting away from its original purpose so I will apologize if I digress as well.

I have the "Faces" LD set on order (should have it soon) and no other versions so I can't speak of the actual LD quality but I will say that I have many, many different "transfers" of the LaserDiscs to "bootleg" DVD, however, predominantly all are from the same source, the Definitive Collection which is a good transfer but not as good as the "Faces" edition. Many of these transfers have been rather "white washed" especially the opening to ANH. This is due not only from limitations of the source but also due to the poor quality of the ANH Definitive transfer which was fixed for the "Faces" edition.

MeBeJedi and Zion are the first (that we know of) to be working on transfers of the "Faces" LaserDisc set. From what we have seen so far from screenshots, these sets will definitely rival their "Definitive Collection" counterparts.

As to whether there is any resolution loss in terms of brightness/contrast or "black" levels, I am sure there are some... there are a lot of transfers out there and not everyone has taken as much care into their transfers. MeBeJedi has involved the community here at the OT forum and thus increased his tenacity for perfection. Zion is doing really good as well. These will both definitely be the ones to get going forward.

MeBeJedi, Zion, Rikter... can you guys chime in and give us your thoughts?

Oh yeah... for the person looking for BT downloads... keep looking... there is a "torrents" thread in this forum and there you will find everything you seek

You really didn't like that line? I was just going through a bunch of Star Wars "transfers" I have and found that the 3PO line appears in the SE and ESE (Extra Special Edition) as well as the '89 and '92 LD re-release. I watched and re-watched this scene with and without that line and I thought the scene just seemed odd without it.

In the versions that do not include the 3PO line the camera pans from the computer to Luke, Han, Ben and R2 and everyone just has this bored look on their face... kind of awkward. In the versions that include 3PO's line the camera still pans to a bored looking Han and Luke but the audio snippet of 3PO relaying the information R2 has found out about how to deactivate the tractor beam just fills in the awkward space and makes sense.

Maybe we should take a poll.... is this scene worth reviving for the OOT? Keep in mind this sound byte was added before the Special Editions but no, it was not in the original '77 release.

As for the snowspeeder sound byte... can someone refresh my memory on that one?

when did you see SW first...
Time
I saw it in 77 when it came to the little town of Milan, TN. I was 6 years old at the time. I believe I lived in Medina at the time so we had to drive into Milan which was then and still pretty much is a rural hole in the wall.

The movie theater only had one screen so we had to stand in line for what seemed forever waiting through showing after showing before we could finally get in.

I remember when we got close enough to the lobby doors that we could see the big cardboard standups of some of the characters.... it wasn't like the individual cardboard standups you can get today, this was like a big Star Wars poster on cardboard.... for some reason I think the Jawas were on there... I just remember looking at it thinking wow, I have to see this.

From that moment forward I was hooked.

My parents were not the type to spoil their kids so I had to wait to get the figures on my birthday and christmas which both come in December so that sucked each year but man did I get a lot of figures over the years

From that first day in 77 I wanted to fly in space and I wanted a "laser sword". No at age 32 I have a crap load of lightsaber replicas, a stormtrooper helmet, Han's blaster and more figures, books and comics than I care to admit

Good times
