Hal's copy of MagnoliaFan's DVDs are probably DVD+R.... out of the four DVD Players I currently have connected at home only 1 (the XBox) will play those DVD+Rs.... even my new LiteOn player crapped out on the DVD+R of MagnoliaFan's BOTF.

... no reason to return the player... just copy the disc to your HD and burn it to a DVD-R disc, it will work on pretty much anything.

Someone else mentioned that if you "burn it right" that it should not matter whether it is DVD+R or DVD-R. I would like to hear a little more about this... when I first bought my burner I bought a boat load of DVD+R discs because like always, they were much cheaper but no matter what software I use or how I burn the disc, nothing I burn to DVD+R will work on anything other than my XBox, however, I have yet to find a DVD-R disc that didn't work on every player I have and every player my friends and family has.

Ash, I think that was you... do you have any tips for burning with DVD+R media... any specific software... Nero, etc.

It is my belief that DVD+R discs are cheaper because the "moneymakers" in the industry know it is less compatible and will not work as well as DVD-R discs on most players... thus reducing "pirating" for people not in "the know". Sadly, I have never seen a dual-layer DVD-R disc... they are all DVD+R and most likely as incompatible as their DVD-5 ancestors.

I have been holding off on doing new screenshots until I got the complete ISOMIX Trilogy and I finally got the full set Saturday so I will be working on new screenshots this week.

I'm such a slacker

I promised Farsight screenshots in the official "screenshots" thread but have been way too busy lately. Don't worry thought, these are forthcoming.

I will hopefully get to post more screenshots early next week.

I was expecting to get the ISOMIX ESB transfer last week and had planned another round of screenshots then but that didn't happen. I have the ISOMIX ESB disc now so I should get back to some screenshots soon and the Farsight set will appear in this round as well.

I totally agree with Rik on this one... that is why I try to always refer to such work as "transfers" rather than "bootlegs". It is one thing to copy a LaserDisc and burn it to DVD, it is something completely different to run through video transfers from multiple sources in an effort to clean up the video frame by frame, adjusting for screen "bounce", rot and other media "blemishes".

George Lucas claims that it would cost him millions to create DVDs of the Original Theatrical cuts of the films. He could save himself a but load of money by bringing in some FanBoy interns, giving them access to the LucasFilm vaults and making sure they have a good supply of beer, pizza and popcorn.

Hats off to Zion, MeBeJedi and anyone with the patience and will to archive these movies knowing that they don't have the time nor the budget of LucasFilm to do so

Is General Grievous really Maul??
Time
I'll have to look it up when I get home but I remember reading an article about this very subject in a past Star Wars Insider issue.

From what I remember, the "creators" of Grievous originally had this idea... to make General Grievous be the resurrected Darth Maul. Their idea was that Sidious "saved" Maul much in the same way he does Anakin as Vader. In fact, that is why Grievous shares the same looking eyes.

When the character designers (artists) pitched the idea to Lucas he said emphatically "NO".

I guess it is just another case of the FanBoys getting pushed down by the man.

If you think about it, this would have made a lot of sense considering that Anakin was made to live through the use of a mostly mechanical body so seeing Maul "living" the same way would have made sense... but then again, we are talking about the prequels so such nonsense as "making sense" just goes out the window

Okay, that did it... I played the video in PowerDVD and stepped through frame by frame, then I saw it, but, that is the only way I really noticed it. If I play the video at full speed, this "jump" in the video is not really noticeable at all.

I saw a comment posted in another thread that is relevent here... something like this.... only geeks like us would notice something like that. I for one will not be stepping through my DVD "boots" frame by frame on the big screen... so no crime, no foul.

Thank you Laserschwert for posting that snippet and Zion, keep up the good work

Not damaged, just that the film itself tended to jump around during the transfer. This is actually not as unusual a scenario as it seems - it's just that not many other films come under such scrutiny.

It just seems to me to be quite a bit more jump than even my crappy e-bay purchased bootlegs. MeBeJedi (and other experts) - any chance you could take a look at the footage that Laserschwert has posted and let us know if that is the same amount of jump that you have seen?

I think I am going to have to see the doctor about possibly boosting my prescription because surely I must be blind.

Is this one of those "making a mountain out of a mole hill", "the other sheep went that way" sort of thing? The only real flaw I can see is a silver "flash" on Vader's helmet. I can't say I have every seen that before in any other transfers but I don't really see this "jumping" or "wavy" video like many of the others have said. I guess I can watch it again in super slow-mo to see if my tired eyes can see anything

Laserschwert, I think in each case from your examples the "original" shots look 100% better. The filters you are using are just white washing the images. With the filters you are suggesting, the output video looks pretty much like Dr Gonzo's, TR47's or any of the other white washed and blurry transfers out there. I think Zion's original transfers look worlds better than any of the existing transfers.

According to ebay, a DVL-91 goes for about $200 with two days left. I bought mine on ebay for $39.99.

After doing some ressearch, I recently purchased a CLD-V2600 off of eBay for $50. It came with no remote so I began searching the net to find one and found that most places wanted around $50 just for the remote.

I decided I needed to be patient and finally I picked up a remote for the CLD-V2600 on eBay for $15. Oddly enough, I believe the remote was listed only with its model number and not the word "Pioneer" so anyone looking for the remote would have probably missed it.

Zion, do you at least have a Universal Remote programmed to work the LD?

Zion, because of the limitations of some widescreen TV's you'll let that dictate the quality of the transfers? I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There are DVD Players on the market that will output a 16:9 Anamorphic picture from non-anamorphic sources, people can use them if it's that important to have a 16:9 picture.

I have been very busy with projects at work and at home so I haven't been following this conversation all that much but after catching up this morning I felt I should chime in.

No offense to DanielB but comments like the above sound absolutely insane. For years I have followed threads at the DVD Talk forum and the one thing I have learned is that DVD Fans believe that "anamorphic" video is the best new invention since sliced bread and a true audio/video aficionado would be absolutely insulted if you told them that 4:3 letterboxed video was better and that they should upgrade their DVD Player to a model that can "trick" the video into filling out the entire screen by stretching it via some sort of pseudo automatic mechanism.

I have seen a lot of posts in the OT forum where people suggest that widescreen TV owners should use their DVD Player's "zoom" function to make up for the fact that 4:3 letterboxed video will not fill out the screen the way anamorphic video will. Both the idea of using the "zoom" function or a DVD Player that does this automagically for you as a means of fooling the viewer into believing they are actually seeing the "full" widescreen presentation is preposterous.

I guess I come at this from a different angle. Since I come from the world of an A/V aficionado who has spent way too much time at places like DVD Talk I have grown to detest 4:3 letterboxed video. DVD video and modern day A/V equipment just screams for anamorphic video. I have seen numerous threads over at DVD Talk where people actually boycott purchasing DVDs just because they are presented in 4:3 letterbox instead of anamorphic widescreen.

With that said, I do realize that since the source of this and other such transfers is coming from a less superior, analog source, the resolution is not what we would expect from DVD, however, I do not feel that making transferring a widescreen video to an anamorphic format will degrade it to such a noticeable extent that it will detract from the presentation. A lot of the people here at the OT forum that have made comments to the contrary do not ahve HDTV or otherwise Widescreen TVs and typically view their DVDs on a Computer monitor to judge the quality. While a computer is great for inspecting DVDs and has the potential of much higher image quality than any TV, the experience is much different from watching on a real TV. Along with that, comparing anamorphic widescreen and letterboxed widescreen video on a 4:3 TV is not a true test of the quality of the video presentation. This so called "standard" 4:3 scale television is an abomination of the video medium and restricting viewing to this old and outdated format by utilizing burned in black bars to "frame" a video down from its original aspect ratio to fit into a smaller viewing area is just absurd.

If given the choice between being forced to sit down and clicking the "zoom" button a few times to fill out my widescreen TV to view a 4:3 letterboxed presentation or sitting back and enjoying the wonders of modern technology at work by providing anamorphically sized 16:9 video, you can bet my finger will be no where near the "zoom" button

Zion, I think you made a great decision in going with an anamorphic widescreen presentation. The only anamorphic transfers that are out there right now are the Dr Gonzo and Farsight transfers.... both of which are fuzzy, whitewashed transfers of the inferior "Definitive Collection" set of laserdiscs. Because of the fact that the available anamorphic transfers are rather poor when held against the highly coveted TR47 transfer, a lot of people believe it is the anamorphic transfer that makes them inferior. As we have seen in your screenshots, your transfer is worlds apart from Dr Gonzo, Farsight and even TR47. I think we are all going to be pleasantly surprised

***The "ISOMIX" feedback thread ***
Time
I watched the ISOMIX ANH transfer on my HDTV before my review and before hearing about his "white line". It was not until after I sat down at the computer to do some screenshots that I actually noticed this at all.

I will take a look at the DVD on a standard 4:3 television later to confirm but from my viewing on a large widescreen TV, this "white line" was not visible at all.

For those wondering how this can be that the line is there on the computer but not on the TV, you should know that video sources are projected onto a TV screen slightly different than what we see on the computer. If you were to capture video feeds that were intended for a 4:3 TV and then watch it back on a computer you would notice that there are black borders in the video. This is completely unnoticeable when viewing on the TV but is clearly apparent when viewing on a computer monitor. In fact, most people tend to crop off these black borders when posting Divx versions of TV shows they have ripped to the internet. If you then re-encode these videos over to a medium that is viewable on a standard DVD Player you will notice some times (depending on your encoding) that certain things get cut off that you know were viewable on your computer such as the station's "watermark" that is typically in the lower right of the screen.

I know a few people have commented that this "white line" is very distracting and thus many people reading this thread may discount this as a "bad" transfer. This is a common mistake many people make about a lot of the transfers out there. If you are judging by how a DVD looks on your computer monitor alone, then you are really missing out. I would urge anyone who had downloaded this or any other transfer to burn it to DVD and check it out in your favorite viewing forum. I rarely ever watch a downloaded DVD on the computer first. My first round is to go to my widescreen HDTV and then to a smaller "standard" 4:3 set for comparison.

As JM has pointed out, the ISOMIX Trilogy is really a great way to enjoy the musical score (soundtrack) of the films.... its more like watching a music video than a movie. I know myself that I enjoy the mixes of the score that appear in the movie much more than what is actually included on the soundtrack because it is more brief and can easily be associated with the corresponding video.

While it goes without saying, I will mention this just in case anyone is confused. The ISOMIX Trilogy includes to audio tracks, one is the standard audio track that goes with the movie while the second is just the isolated score (music).

I think it is a great idea and I look forward to checking out the rest of the trilogy

New screenshots have been added

Zion has provided me with screenshots from an early "screener" version of his transfer. Man, those are sick dude

I think we will all agree that Zion's project is coming along rather nicely

MeBeJedi, we have seen glimpses of your latest transfer of ANH in the "bootleg" threads. If you can, please provide me with updates screenshots of the scenes listed above so that we can all see where you are at. I know the versions I have posted above do not do your transfer justice.

I don't have any new scenes to post at this time. I am working hard on a project at work and got in late last night and was dog tired

Hopefully I can look at doing some more shots tonight... and I will see about getting the Farsight screenshots in there as well

Come on over to the Feedback thread for discussion.

Say what?!? PCM is mandatory for DVD players, since DVDs are required to have either a PCM or DD soundtrack. Are you sure your PCM file was good? Did you try playing the PCM file on a different disc?
"So, for instance if I make three captures from three different ANH LD's and on one frame one has a rot spot and the other two don't, the output video will be without that spot. Using this method, I should be able to produce a transfer that is rid of all rot spots."

What if the "spot" is from the laserdisc material itself?

Not so sure PCM is considered to be mandatory. I used to get a lot of PCM encoded DVDs from a guy I met on eBay and they wouldn't work in my older players. One of my newer DVD Players handled the PCM audio horribly... it just kept skipping. I found that with all of my DVD Players that the XBox was the best at playing the PCM audio source.

Maybe you are right, maybe it is the encoding. All I know is that I was so glad I was not at my Grandparent's 60th Anniversary party when they tried to play the DVD I sent them and the audio kept going in and out. I don't think I could have looked in the eyes of all the people there when that happened. Luckily my brother had sent a DVD with a lot of the material I had done but with Pro-Logic (DS 2.0) sound and it worked great. He saved the day but I still felt like crap.

I think it is hit or miss with DVD Players on their level of PCM support.

Not that I think of it though, I think I should dig out some of my older players and try the TR47 set to see how that works.

PCM is raw, uncompressed audio and audiophiles just love it for music but when it comes to movies, pro-logic or Dolby Surround 2.0 will get you the same level of sound and will be much more compatible with new and legacy players.

Now you have me interested... I'm going to have to check out some pro DVDs to see if PCM is really a "default". I have ripped quite a few DVDs in my days and I am used to seeing DS 2.0 and DD 5.1 tracks but not so sure about PCM... other than music DVDs.

Some DVD Players are not even compatible with PCM Audio... I got burned on that a while back doing a 60th Anniversary DVD for my Grandparents only to find out their DVD Player wasn't compatible

I checked the disc on several of my other DVD Plaerys (I have 5) and it only played on 2

So if you are doing dual-layer and can afford the space then including both is a great idea.

All great ideas. The majority of the screenshots shown here today come from a few weeks ago when I did some comparison shots for the MeBeJedi set. Since I don't have the MeBeJedi set I was just going off of what MBJ had posted himself.

What I will do now is go through and make another round of screenshots illustrating some of the darker scenes such as space battles and if I don't have the source material to get the same shots from MeBeJedi then I will just leave a placeholder and request shots from him.

I know Zion is going to be doing ANH next so I will coordinate with him later to get his ANH shots.

Thanks for the feedback guys... hopefully this thread will proove to be a great resource for us all.

Great feedback Zion... you are totally right. Those screenshots originally came from the "bootlegs" thread... I made all of those to match shots MeBeJedi had made. I'll see what I can do about adding in some more shots that show of the detail in some of the more dark or "black" scenes.

Zion, I will PM you later tonight about the ESB screenshots
