That's pretty well done for your first run at colour correction! Most people just lower the saturation and adjust the contrast - I can tell you've put work into it.

Before you attempt any form of colour correction make sure that you have your monitor properly calibrated. That video is way too orange/ brown so i can guess that your monitor is probably set to "cool".

ady is right. When I did graphic design, a lot of the colour on my earlier work looked great to me, but everyone kept telling me it looked bad and I missed some dark areas and bright areas, and then when I got a better screen I was able to properly adjust colour tones and the blackest blacks and the whitest whites. I've personally invested in a Toshiba 23" HDTV as my computer display and it works like a beauty! What kind of display are you using?

fishmanlee said:

alright, i'll look into calibrating my display, i dont want to do crappy color correction/adjustment. until i calibrate my display there shouldnt be any color corrections/adjustments posted here

Even once you think you have the video calibrated, check it on another screen first and if it looks good to you, then upload it. The worst that will happen is that people will point out some errors - and frankly, how else do you plan on improving?

Nothing you do ever looks good. Sorry.

That was completely awful.

Aaaaaaaaw..... how cute! You actually think you know what you are talking about. :)

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

I know he has a wife and kids, but I don't really know anything about his financial life, etc. I think all of us fan-editors do our work on our edits during our spare time (at least, that's how it is with me). Consider this: a full-time editor is supposed to finish editing a film in 1-3 months for a feature film, and then there's also 2-6 months for effects. By that account, ANH:R should have been done in 3-9 months, and CWN (Star Wars Renascent - The Clone Wars Narration) should have been done in 3 months (5 maximum due me needing to "un-edit" many scenes), but both ANH:R and CWN have taken (I think) 3 years! Going by all that, I would think that ady, like myself, and like many other editors, does his edits on the side of his work, social life and family life.

Now I am by no means a representative of all fan-editors, I'm just trying to give my understanding of the matter - and of course I could be completely wrong.

I had a question for ady:

So during my progress for CWN, I realised a lot of the preview shots were laggy. I have a 2.6 dual core processor and 5GB of RAM - my graphic card is an Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset. I feel that the RAM and CPU are sufficient, but that I need a new graphic card. What is your opinion on the matter?

Alright, so essentially, it's done.

Tomorrow I'm going to make a new logo sequence - I've already got it planned out and everything (it'll be in 1080p so that later I won't need to remake one).

Then I'm going to right down every change and adjustment I've made in a notebook

Next, I'll be recording an audio commentary track of me addressing it all.

Then I'll be rendering the DVD video and audio files, as well as a single WMV file.

Then I'm going to make adjustments to the main disc for the new commentary track.

Finally, I have to make a couple corrections to the cover and then they should be ready to go.

If people ask me for a copy, I'll gladly print the covers and labels, burn the discs, put it all together and mail it, I only ask that the person do two things:

1. Show proof of ownership of Episodes I-IV (a video or photograph would be fine) and a message stating good faith and that they do in fact own the films.

2. Pay for the supplies (printing, cases, labels, discs) and also the shipping. (I'll be making NO profit off of this, and I'm going to post complete breakdowns of pricing later (showing you how much the labels, cases, discs, etc all are so that you can chose if you want the Single Disc Edition (with or without Digital Copy) or the Two Disc Edition (with or without the Digital Copy).

We're almost there guys!

If anyone was curious, here is a screen shot of the AV-line for my edit. There are 25 different tracks.

Also see here: http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/8688/editingscreenshot.jpg

Also, I find it interesting how I thought the only problem was the frame rate error, and then I found a bunch more issues. I give a lot of credit to my new computer for allowing me to actually see the previews (to some degree, I'm still getting a little lag).

Ok so today...

I finished editing Anakin's voice.

I fixed the Genosis fade error mention earlier.

Fixed a couple audio transtitions

I re-adjusted the flashback Vader has.

I replaced a handful of AOTC scenes again.

I continued re-aligning the AOTC audio/video (it was out of sync before by 0.07 seconds).

I adjusted the colour, saturation and contrast in the opening sequence.

Only four more AOTC sequences to fix! I'm also going to make a new logo sequence, and record a commentary track.

See the thing is that you have the shot of them leaving the ship - this allows for the audience to experience their transition in setting and a better lapse in time. In my edit, I've cut them walking away from the ship, I've cut them entering the factory, and I've cut the factory sequence. It's not something that the viewer will consciously realise, but it's something that you're mind will know it's off - a lot like the 180 rule in camera work.

R2D2 and the Protocol droid are cut completely, but there is a reason why I left it. If you cut from a group of characters to the same characters quickly in a different setting and much later, it makes the transition much more jarring and noticeable to the audience. Although, I don't really care for the scene with the droids, it was necessary to avoid this disturbance in the audience's sense of time and space in the film. If we followed them through the factory scene, that's different, but I cut that out. Instead, they both just walk into a trap.

I'm not even showing him in the PM scenes, he's in the AOTC scenes and he's shown on the Lars' farm - why doesn't Owen remember C3PO? It doesn't make sense. Owen needed a new protocol droid would make sense though, considering they would no longer have one by ANH. C3PO is in ROTS though. He'll be Padme's protocol droid - makes more sense for her to have one, and have it be gold. It takes care of many plot holes by just making him some other protocol droid. If you guys want, I can upload the ONE scene I have of him.

Ok so today...

I went over all of the AOTC scenes where Anakin sounded whiny and lowered the pitch SLIGHTLY. (I doubt you would have realized unless I told you).

I fixed a bunch of fading errors.

Fixed random audio errors. (Bleeding, missed fades, a random "beep" sound)

I finalized the flashback Vader has.

I replaced a handful of AOTC scenes again.

I continued re-aligning the AOTC audio/video (it was out of sync before by 0.07 seconds).

I deleted one of C3PO's lines.

I adjusted C3PO's voice so that he no longer sounds like C3PO but just some other protocol droid.

Only four more AOTC sequences to fix!

Here's what I did today:

Remapped all the audio clips I added so that speech comes out of the center speakers only (in the Phantom Menace scenes and the vader breathing I had put in were panned 5.1)

The music I added no longer comes from the center speaker

I replaced the Vader breathing with a high quality one for his reveal and it now pans through the surround sound as Vader walks off camera - from C to FLl to SL

"The Imperial March" featured in Vader's reveal is now turned down and fits better with the film.

One of the fly-bys from a TPM scene now has proper 5.1 pan (before it just played out of all the speakers, now it starts in SL and makes its way up to FL).

Sepiah effect in TPM scenes now have better contrast.

Finished retouching the clashing music from InfoDroids mirrored deaths scene.

Re-inserted the AOTC scenes during the mirrored cantina sequence.

Fixed the "flash" during Vader's flashback sequence to the last time he saw Obi-Wan (still missing a sound effect that I mentioned in the post above).

Fixed clashing audio and the volume of the fade out to the credits.

Replaced the songs "Honour Him" and "Now We Are Free" in the credits with Lisa Gerrard's "Maranatha (Come Lord)" to better fade with "The Shroud of the Dark Side" and "Briseis And Achilles".

The shortened "Briseis And Achilles" is now fades through the cut smoothly.

Fixed a few segments of audio that were out of sync (speech and fly-bys).

Re-adjusted the timing in a few fades.

Still left to do:

Replace six more AOTC segments (I found a few I missed).

Double check every audio cue/fade and video transition.

Thank God I only have one class on Wednesdays!

EDIT: Once I've rendered the video, I've decided to make a commentary track and also an MP3 of the credits music.

EDIT 2: I'm also thinking of making myself a new logo intro. We'll see.
