An idea for Halloween....

The Shout Factory version of Halloween 2 has the TV cut in SD but the deleted scenes (stuff from the TV Cut) are all in HD.  That could prove be useful if you plan on using that footage in your edit.

You mean the BD? I have the DVD version, and the "deleted scenes" are pan'n'scan 4:3, just like the TV cut (but lower quality and interlaced).

Though "HD" and "SD" have nothing to do with the aspect ratio anyway ;)

@msycamore: You're right about the glue. I just checked Puggo's version of ESB and it's there.

This makes me wonder if the glue marks in SW is in the technicolor prints as well.

The glue is ALL OVER the JSC. It's at the end of almost every shot (not scene!) change.

Yeah, it's about as bad as Ernest Saves Camp @_@

Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971

Yowza, popped in The Spy Who Loved Me UE DVD last night for a minute (had the title song stuck in my head), Zeta Minor's website hadn't mentioned how much of a grainless DVNR nightmare it is @_@

Looked like there was some edge enhancement haloing going on too, and everything was so stable that it looked unnatural...but as soon as the title sequence ended, the frame started wobbling and bouncing all over the place...very strange.

I'll just have to sit at a normal distance from the screen next time, and not straight in front of it.

But compression and EE is bad, isnt it?

If one had to make a set of DVDs using the SEs and UEs, which would you choose from each set to make a "best" set?

I've got a few of the SEs, and they're not bad, they're just not amazing. Not that the UEs are amazing, but some of them look pretty darn good, problems aside.

You want to see bad, see the original DVD of Throw Momma from the Train =( That's one double-dip I was very happy to make.

But back to your question, I think the general opinion is that Live and Let Die looks a lot worse on the UE. The other DVDs tend to be a matter of weighing the pros and cons.

if there was gate weave in the original

why wouldn't it be there?

It wasn't in the original though, it's just in the GOUT masters...or they screwed something up while mastering it to DVD.

Either way, if you haven't seen the GOUT before G-Force got a hold of it, basically the picture shakes left and right by a couple of pixels the whole time. All three movies.

overall, those don't seem like bugs to me...

That's why I used the quotation marks ;) As was stated in the original post: "The definition of a bug in this context is left intentionally open.", so we're including other mistakes, flaws, etc., and intentional flaws.

Please don't list things like: "DVNR! har har har!". An exception is the infamous speeder shot because a replacement can be dropped in from an LD source (and color-corrected) without being too distracting.

That's not going to fix the entire movie, though.

Or movies, I should say. Empire is really bad, too.

Other "bugs" include the gate weave, those weird "glitchy saber" shots (don't know much about them, but I've seen the screen grabs), and obviously the non-anamorphic picture.

do you think the noise, dirt and reel change marks

are too distracting?

No. The GOUT smearing I find distracting, but dirt and scratches (as long as they aren't too excessive) are just the nature of the beast. It's like pops and clicks on a vinyl record, or RF interference on your Atari 2600.

I don't know what "noise" you're talking about. If you mean film grain, it would be a crime to remove it. Even grain during composite shots, trying to take that out I think would just be too destructive, and would make the film feel more lifeless, like the 2004s.

I go to the theatre a lot, so I'm used to seeing "cigarette burns" on films.

Having said all that, I don't mind too much of the cleanup you guys are doing, especially all the scratches that are all over Empire. When you've got the green lines going down for a whole reel or whatever, that does get pretty distracting awfully quick. I just hope the method you're using doesn't take too much time and energy, or doesn't remove things that it shouldn't be. Also, the stabilization/de-warping filters are nice.

would/could you

watch the whole movie in this quality (720p/1080p)?

I could, as long as it had the color correction. I don't think I'd enjoy it as much if it was blue tinted with certain scenes all faded red spliced in.

notice how some camera shots are really shaky?

If you mean the shot of R2 in the canyon, I didn't know they "fixed" that in the SEs.

negative1 said:

you need to UNLEARN....

I think I've seen the SEs maybe three times total, so there's not much for me to unlearn =) With all these great new releases out lately, I think I've forgotten most of the SE changes already.

try different browsers, or update your flash plugin.

It just kept giving the generic "Sorry, There was an error encountered while loading this video." message. I tried a different computer, and most of them played.

why not show harmy's v2/2.1 afterwards?

I might have to keep that in mind as a backup plan.
