Also, there was apparently a plot thread that got dropped late into the scriptwriting stage of ROTS where Anakin would (wrongly) start to suspect Padme and Obi-Wan were having an affair. It was the right decision to cut it, but you can still feel vestiges of it in the shooting script, when Anakin suspects Obi-Wan has been in Padme’s apartment and when he declares “You’re with him!” on Mustafar.

I don’t recall ever reading those scenes like that. It would make sense, but it always felt like more of the ‘everyone except Palps ganging up on poor Ani’ plot that was necessary for Anakin’s turn.

I always assumed it was Obi-Wan especially in light of TCW. Padmé technically has known him for longer than she has Anakin, he’s expressed a distrust of the Chancellor openly, has the confidence and trust of Padmé’s friend Satine, knew about and kept the secret of Anakin and Padmés relationship, and is a high ranking member of the Jedi Council.

It’s not massively apparent in the final cut of RotS or in TCW (thanks to the Return to Mon Cala arc being cut) but, by the end of the War, Padmé is really having trouble with finding herself on the opposite moral side to her oldest adviser/mentor and her husband. A build up of that conflict would have gone a long way to explain exactly how quickly Anakin assumes Padmé and Obi-Wan have teamed up against him when they all get to Mustafar.

a new hope, adding visual effects, emotion and more character (a WIP)

I managed to get some of the Yavin stuff to load and I like the more tropical feel it gives off. The light skies and dark forest also look like there’s an imminent storm which is a good metaphor.

The lighting in the Laars’ garage may be a bit too dark. I always thought it was too dark compared to AotC in ANH anyway and I never even noticed the skyhopper because of the lighting, but it looks a little creepy with 3P0 as a main light source. (the nighttime scenes, not the daylight ones where he’s playing with the toy).

Most of the Death Star is a matte grey or a blue tinted grey but the scenes of Obi and Vader getting ready for their duel have a redish tint. Is that a Musterfar callback?

Something I’d like to add in a V2, if I ever do one, is a modified version of one of NFBisms’ changes - a really neat bit of audio trickery in the missed briefing scene, where he has Obi-Wan tell Anakin “Your apprentice has moved her troops to Mandalore.” I’d want to change it to “Ahsoka has… etc” instead, though; “your apprentice” implies information about Anakin the audience doesn’t know and will never get touched upon again (he has an apprentice?). Naming her directly means that if the audience doesn’t recognise the significance of the name, it’s just some technobabble in context (like the original line it replaces).

I’d be able to get a clean clip of Obi-Wan saying “Ahsoka” with the right intonation somewhere in TCW, but even then it might not work, since that extended open “oh” sound is one of the places where James Arnold Taylor’s Obi-Wan voice is noticeably different from Ewan MacGregor’s. I’ll keep an ear out while next time I watch TCW, regardless.

Maybe he’ll say her name in ‘Kenobi’.

The way you’ve inserted it still works well besides the weird red tint it has (I don’t know why it has that considering the senate is blue and grey lit) and it works quite well considering the general level of CGI in TMP anyway.

TMP has a lot of instances of things that don’t particularly match the following two films (as well as being 10 years earlier) so another Senator from Alderan is no more out of place than the Jedi Council which is only about 50% carried over into AotC. Also, the Representative in the background with the hair buns and white dress is a nice nod to the OT whereas the look of Alderan in the rest of the PT is quite different.

Out of all the changes made to the PT the audio change from ‘Vote Now’ to ‘Incoherent Yells’ is the most bizarre and baffling.

I’m looking forward to this. As good as fan edits usually are, there’s also something good about just adding all available media back to the films.

The only thing I don’t think I’d include in a workprint is the Bail Antillies/Organa scene since it confuses things a little with Jimmy Smits.

I don’t know the context of the scene (I’ve only seen screen caps) but is there any actual dialogue that indicates that the fella is supposed to be the same character as Smits’? Or that they represent the same planet or whatever the actual confusion is?

Would it be possible to fit the scene in by just letting viewers assume they’re different people like the Wedge/Fake Wedge in ANH (who I didn’t even know were supposed to be the same person until it was pointed out that Fake Wedge was now a new character).

I can easily see amendments written which would destroy democracy, like making the Chancellors term in office, and his practical power…unlimited.

This comment has made me realize that “Amendment after amendment” might be saying that Palpatine is making amendments, not that George Lucas thinks amendments are like units of Constitution juice or something.

Still… what an incredibly awkward line. Don’t blame me for thinking “Amendment after amendment” meant “Amendment after amendment is in shreds” lol

It’s far from perfect, but there is potential I think.

“The constitution is in shreds! Amendment after amendment!”

Whoever wrote that line has no idea how government works. It always bothered me, and it’s why I’ve never liked that deleted scene.

A chancellor with unchecked power altering the constitution whenever he wants to stay in power forever? Yeah, no government has ever worked like that.

Can you truly call that a working government?

The Republic isn’t a working government. Corporations have seats as if they were systems.

That said, my huge volume of posted thoughts don’t generate as much discussion as I’d expected, which I think comes down to one of two things: Either people read it and are like ‘yeap, sound enough, carry on’, which is fine by me as it means I’ve generated good trust, or I’m just overwhelming people by massively overdoing it and they’re sitting there wishing I’d just shut up and output content. Which is also mostly fine, though I’d rather not be putting people off with a too-high volume of unnecessary analysis and losing out on having people chime in on the necessary analysis.

A lot of the time I don’t have much to add as I’ve not watched the series in full since the run up to the final series. Other times you’re in my brain anyway so there’s no need to add anything (as I see it anyway). I do read it all though so I’ve no problem with a full transcript of your brain if it helps put this together.

I nearly just rendered an episode with incomplete titles by mistake.

It would have read:

"The Clone Wars spread instability and chaos across the galaxy.
Mando Mando Mando.
Mando Mando Mando.

Mando Mando Mando.
Mando Mando Mando.
Mando Mando."

I’ve no doubt that’s exactly what Dave Filoni’s template document for scripts for episodes of the Mandalorian looks like, but it’s not going to suffice for you guys.

Works like Pokemon speech. It’s only a repetition of the name but it makes sense if you speak it.

Can I get a quick opinion guys? A friend recommended that I change the way I present the four cuts (Mando, Quality, Continuity, Complete) in my tracker spreadsheet. Can I get some feedback on whether the original INFO tab is clear enough, or if it isn’t, that the new ‘Info2’ tab is any clearer? I want to make it obvious to people that people who want the Mando cut just need the red episodes, but people who want the Quality cut need red + green, etc.

It’s fine to me, though I’ve seen it since you first put it up so maybe I’m just familiar and know what I’m looking for.

My issue is that I don’t actually remember anything that happened in any episode which makes it difficult to make suggestions on how best to order them. I’m terrible for remembering details.

I will say that after the canon series 3 (and the model change) up until the end of series 6, the characterisations of the mains and recurring supporting characters don’t really change too much. Obviously plots continue that have impacts on later stories so it’s not like they can go in any order, but the characters don’t change all that much. The main trio and Padmé are especially static after that point I feel.

Ahsoka basically starts from her model change as having got over the impulsiveness from before, and basically become a hybrid of Obi (she’s incredibly sarcastic) and Ani (she’s very prone to emotion) and stays that way until series 7 where she becomes more like Obi (calm mentor).

Both completely correct. I’ve just finished a re-review of a batch of Padmé-centric episodes: Corruption/The Academy, Assassin, Heroes on Both Sides/Pursuit of Peace/Senate Murders. Onwards to analysis!

  • I don’t know how much value I’d get out of this next idea, but since the drinks contain “Tea”, I might use the opening crawl to establish the street name “T” (short for whatever so long as it begins with ‘T’) if I want to use more dialogue that refers to the word ‘Tea’. I might not need to though.

Turmeric… 'cos it’s a… spice… spice runners.

*Regarding the Palpatine twist. I know this is just my opinion, but a lot has been said about the right order to watch Star Wars. Original first, Prequel first, Machete, etc. And a lot of edits have been made so that it can be enjoyed in those preferred ‘right’ orders. Ep1 trimmed as the opening of Ep2, trilogy edits, prequels with the OT twists preserved, etc. But here’s the OBJECTIVELY CORRECT, NO ARGUMENT WELCOME, OFFICIAL DEFINITELY RIGHT, IF YOU DISAGREE YOU ARE WRONG ordering:

  1. Original Trilogy
  2. Entire franchise in chronological order (including the OT, in place).

Absolutely perfect except for the minor typo of adding bullet point 1 when only 2 was needed (which is technically two typos as you’ve put 2 rather than 1).

You can’t teach children to count then say ‘well actually sometimes it goes 4,5,6,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9’, it’ll confuse them.
Besides, back in 2005 I was the archetypal older child, i.e. the one all the others were based on, and the OT was boring, it was plastic, bad effects, and teddy bears, whereas the PT was constant excitement. And if that’s how I saw it then all other children in the world (who are based on me as established) will only enjoy the OT with context that it kinda follows on from the defining event of their lives.

Taking out all the background fluff on Cyborg, Aquaman, and Flash and making them into some sort of short film would help. You don’t do your big team up film and spend a significant chunk of it on mini-origin films for half your cast.

Correct the aspect ration. The film is essentially part of trilogy within the DCEU of Man of Steel and Batman V Superman and is incredibly jarring to watch after them due to the tacky aspect ratio. It’s like he was making a nod to Whedon’s weird aspect ratio for Avengers: Assemble that doesn’t match Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Fix the terrible colourgrading of all three films in the trilogy.

I’ve not seen the other cut since it released but you could probably take all the scenes that don’t cause continuity errors, add them to this cut (once the terrible colours and framing have been fixed) to replace the endless flashback stuff and split the film in two.

The problem with this petition is that it’s based on the JJ cut nonsense. We have no evidence that JJ was forced to cut the movie down any more than any other movie has to be cut down for run time. The “Disney Star Wars is Dumb” source the petition links to is a repost of a post originally from /r/saltierthancrait, clearly intended to stir up controversy and almost certainly fabricated.

It’s like the QAnon thing - there’s a whole culture of Star Wars fans, and particularly YouTubers, who buy in to this enormous divide and conflict at Lucasfilm because of their supposed insiders, and are sure that any day now Joe Biden Kathleen Kennedy will be suddenly ousted or arrested or something. With Justice League, the BTS issues were well-known, obvious, and corroborated by the actors. The “JJ cut” idea is just a desperate attempt to apply that same concept to this movie, even though TROS didn’t bring in a second director for reshoots or anything similar.

My point is there’d probably be more of a chance of success with a straight forward petition to release the deleted scenes we know were shot, rather than bringing in unsubstantiated speculation and begging for a cut that doesn’t really exist.

Sorry, this isn’t anything to do with Ascendant.

Abrams is also known for fast paced, rapidly moving films with little in the way of extra scenes released. He’s never going to release an extended cut on his own terms any way because that’s not his style.

From what I recall, it was Paramount that added the deleted scenes to the release of the 2009 Star Trek film, not Abrams.

I’ve been going through these episodes and really the only issue I have with them besides technical ones is the opening texts. I feel like they aren’t needed at all… They just take up time that honestly leaves me bored. I feel like taking the first few minutes of an episode and doing a cold open before the title card is better.

+1

-2, just to balance it out.
