The Clone Wars: Refocused [COMPLETE]
Time

I’ve never been able to get along with the original CW series. I really dislike the voice acting for most of the characters (American accented clones! At least Baker’s Australianish accent is relatively close to a New Zealand one) and the Anakin here is my least favourite in the franchise (even TPM and AotC Anakin is preferable). I know it has its fans but I just don’t get the appeal.

Nooo, I think I just got lucky. I have been thinking about this stuff for three and a half months straight now. Though it does go to show that you can’t over-plan for this stuff, you should always be ready to flex and change as new ideas come to light!

EDIT: Damn, it works even better in context than I’d thought! She goes and teaches the younglings JUST AFTER SHE’S SAVED A BUNCH OF YOUNGLINGS. She’s literally just had the experience of realising how important the future generations of Jedi are, so she immediately goes about starting to get involved in their training, setting her on the path which continues through Rebels with Ezra all the way through to Mando with Grogu. FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK this was a really lucky get.

Well that fits like it was always meant to. It’ll actually be different to see it another way now.

‘Seven Warriors’, at 7 mins in has a really weird transition where Ashoka is surprised when Obi-Wan says they can’t help the farmers, followed by a scene cut that directly returns the same conversation. They move outside during it tough so there’s not really much that can be done, except possibly remove Ashoka’s line inside and just join the conversation outside after.
I really hope Hondo turns up in The Mandalorian or one of the new live action spin-offs, he’s just so fun.

Ashoka takes charge in most of the early parts of this episode and is focused on her job when they crash whilst the other two bicker, it shows she’s learning from the events of the Holocron episodes. On that note I wonder if it’d be better after ‘Lightsabre Lost’, show she’s picked up on the patience lesson there because she feels a lot more like later series Ashoka in ‘Seven Warriors’.

I see your link to Hondo and the Underworld in the opening of Lightsabre Lost, but Hondo, and pirates in general, aren’t really connected to the Underworld. I think a better link would be investigating the crew of Bane and set it before ‘Seven Warriors’. There was a Weequee in Bane’s crew after all. Also, it follows Ahsoka’s relationship with Jocasta and essentially looks like she’s been in the Temple continuously since the disaster on Felucia.

While I continue to work, one question’s popped out that’s worth asking the community:

In Children of the Force, there’s a fun scene where Sidious in hologram gets all excited about the force sensitive babies he’s had captured. Obviously, ideally this becomes the first (chronological) hint that he’s interested in collecting/harvesting force sensitives, as continued in Rebels, Mandalorian, and ultimately implicitly used as part of his resurrection.

In the original version of this scene, he talks about turning the kids in to ‘force sensitive spies, capable of viewing the galaxy from afar’, which is both not a very interesting use of the force, and also not really what he ends up doing with force sensitives.

You could maybe argue he’s thinking Inquisition there, but ultimately that’s not how he created the inquisition anyway.

So, right now I’ve got it so instead he talks about dreaming of a ‘force sensitive army, trained in the darkside, and my enemies will be helpless’. I think that’s both more ambiguous and more threatening, and I don’t think it necessarily conflicts with the rule of two since he’s not calling them Sith, and there’re examples of him using many different force users in his various plans.

However, what that version does do is still make it explicit, so it doesn’t leave much room to be interpreted as an investment in his eventual resurrection.

On the one hand, eventual resurrection is a more powerful reason to want force sensitives (and helps smooth out ‘somehow Palpatine returned’), but on the other hand generic ‘force sensitives in my employ’ is fairly threatening and meaty.

Army. Basically anything that helps answer where the minions of the Final Order and all the chanting weirdos in ROS come from would be more useful than the return of Palps thing.
I really had no issues with Palp’s resurrection from a technical standpoint (from a narative standpoint however…), clones are a thing, Nightsister zombies are a thing, Bane’s essence hanging around is a thing, so I’m not bothered about even more clues to it. But limitless minions from nowhere is just odd.

I’d certainly appreciate any feedback on the clip I have done so far ^_^

The music fits well. You’ve already mentioned the odd jumping in the sound right at the beginning. I don’t have the original to compare to at hand but it’s possibly a bit loud compared to the other sounds. It doesn’t drown anything out but it does seem like it’s been laid over (well it has but it also sounds like it has).

The difference is that Stark and Strange had arrogance that was a character flaw.
All heroes in the Marvel universe (comic and cinematic) are intended to have flaws proportional to the strength of their power. Only by overcoming these flaws can they become the heroes they need to be.

In her movie, Captain Marvel’s arrogance was not intended to be a flaw, but some how a strength… and that just doesn’t work.

No they’re not. Strange’s feeds into his desire to be the best at magic as much as he was at medicine and Stark’s drives him to constant innovation. Danver’s main strength is not giving up, it’s probably due to arrogance, but, like the other two, it directly feeds her strength.

What Strange and Stark have to give up is their selfishness. Danvers never suffers from that problem.

I had no problem with her being arrogant and condescending. I also had no problems with Strange and Stark being arrogant and condescending. The problem I had was the latter two were allowed to also be funny whereas Danvers wasn’t. Though that’s probably because she spent most of the film not knowing who she was.

and either trims to or the full removal of the Neimoidian admiral who serves as Anakin’s foil,

Unless it drastically affects the pacing, I’d rather he stayed. Seeing living CIS leaders and not just a endless array of Tactical and Super-Tactical droids is nice, but having a Neimoidian character who isn’t an absolute joke (even if he’s only brief) improves them as a species a whole lot. Lot Dodd is pretty cool compared to every other Neimoidian but Mar Tuuk is better.
Considering how much every other CIS leader is played as a joke (excluding Dooku), you have to wonder how they’re actually doing so well against the Republic.

Not sure I see the issue with “heck” vs “hell” - Star Wars has always had odd real-world expletives so this never felt out of place for me, unless there’s something I’m missing?

It’s just a really mild reaction to the situation. I don’t think ‘heck’ is even used again.
Edit: Me referring to it as ‘the most pressing issue’ was just humour. It has no impact beyond just sounding really amusingly underplayed for seeing Red shoot a ‘clone’ in the head, especially as Heavy does say ‘hell’ later in the episode.

Interesting take on Clone Cadets. Do you not feel that it’s necessary to focus us on our main characters and give a little extra context? Even without the Echo/Fives/Hevy setup, it feels necessary to set up 99/bad batchers, does it not? Interested to see if there’s a community consensus on this.

In terms of character it is important, in terms of plot it’s not. There’s very little in it that couldn’t be covered in a crawl, that’s what I mean.
I’m not saying it needs to be excised or even altered in any particular way, just that it feels less useful to the story of that arc than it is useful to the characters of the series as a whole.

I’ve given it a watch. Firstly, the most pressing issue is Cody, upon having seen Rex shoot a ‘clone’ in the head asks him what the ‘heck’ he’s doing. That’s just silly. Is there an instance of a clone saying ‘hell’ that could be used there?

As for the structure, I found the first episode to be the most problematic. It does cover all the necessary beets to make the second and third work, but it mostly feels unneeded. It does help with the pacing and characterisation but it just feels out of place and tacked on. It did originally as well. It never fit very well with ‘ARC Troopers’ and it doesn’t really fit as a two parter with the Listening Post episode either.

The Anakin hunting Grievous part is well done and ties the three episodes in better than the clone plot does.

‘Heavy always did hate that place’ seems a little overly dramatic to say he’d only been there two weeks. I also miss the ‘do we take prisoners? I. don’t.’ bit. Also, when Fives and Echo first turn up on Kamino and speak to 99, their surprise that he recognises them is out of place for people that have been gone for 2 weeks.

This was always going to be the most difficult cut to compile from a continuity stand point and I, unfortunately only have nitpicks and not any suggestions. I do mostly like how it’s come out and you’ve done a good job fitting it together, it’s just naturally weaker than the other cuts.

I don’t think there’s anything in it that would turn off new viewers though which is the important part.

I think I agree for most of the edits but I also think the Toydarians need a little bit of a role. I like the style of their city built for flying people and they lead to Savage showing why he’s so named. I also like Katuunko making a stand even though he probably knows he has no hope.

Christophsis, I’d suggest the crystals are important for the ray shield generation, the Republic does use some crystal based weapons (i.e. the lasers on the LAATs) but mostly they use the same sorts of weapons as the Separatists.
Malastair (the Dug planet) is their fuel planet and, as you point out, Kamino, Sullust, and the Medical Station are all military targets. It contrasts nicely with the end of the war and the Outer Rim Sieges where both sides are faffing around on places of no strategic importance not daring to strike at key sites like Kamino or Geonosis again.

The scene from Duchess of Mandalore was included and should be there.

Unfortunately, the only remaining sources of deleted scenes, as you point out, would have been in the Cad Bane cut, (His s2 arc had some as well), but the only sources I was able to gain access too were too poor quality to use effectively at the time, so I felt it was best to just take the hit and move on. Perhaps an extended v2 of that specific cut could be created at a later time, but right now it’s not a major priority.

Hope you’re enjoying the rest of the cuts otherwise.

Ah yes, as I said I was only flicking through before whilst waiting but I’ve since got it downloaded and Mas Amedda is there.

Oh I am enjoying them. Having them all edited together seems like the way they should always have been watched. Considering that several arcs were edited together for the DVD sets I wonder why they didn’t do it with all the arcs for Disney+. Still, the visual quality isn’t as good as yours so I’ll stick with yours and leave my DVDs in the cupboard.

I think that’s a good way of doing it. Considering how important Echo and Fives (the former especially) go on to be they do need to be the focus. It’s good that you’re keeping as much 99 as possible as he’s the clear inspiration for Clone Force 99 and Echo’s part in that.

One thing I find a bit weird (and this is with TCW in general not with these edits) is how ARC Troopers are classed as something to be promoted to, rather than a lighter version of the Clone Commandos. Fives does seem to have earnt some Special Forces bona fides by the Umbara arc but the pair of them in the Citadel arc and Jessie in the SoM arc are basically normal troopers with fancy armour.
The other thing is how much Cody defers to Rex despite out-ranking him. I know they were going for playing down Cody so audiences didn’t get to liking him, but it leaves Cody looking like another trooper in fancy armour.
