Why was the '04 DVD set such a botched release?

Janskeet when LFL restored the star wars trilogy episodes 4,5, and 6 in 2004 for the dvd release the 1st where sent to flim restorationest John Lowery to restore them and then they where sent to ILM for Color Correction and any addition changes Mr. Lucas wanted to make to the flims and yes the original version and SE's where restored before work on the DVD began because they where restored from the original nagitives.

Is this a joke?!?! Color correction? The colors weren't corrected, they were fucked up. If an original is restored you would expect it to be made as it was before, not to be majorly changed into something else.

Why would you take the effort to join originaltrilogy.com today and start saying nonsence like this? This has to be a joke by another memeber...

[Request] Uploads to newsgroup or torrent

OK, I'll try to seed ANH Editdroid. But I don't know if my version will pass the hashcheck...

EDIT: OK, most files fail the hashcheck so I can only seed the vob files. But I think everybody has all the other stuff already. So you should be able to finish it. But my upload speed is currently very slow as I have a lot of other torrents running at the moment that I have to finish first.

I can't "see" some of the threads entirely
Time

Somehow there are a few threads that I'm having trouble seeing like the politics thread. I can only see the last 4 message posted on page 146. I can't see the quick reply field, the page just ends with ghostalpha26's reply to janskeet. Also The Dark Knight Movie discussion thread has this problem, I can only see the first 2 messages on page 7 of hotrod and ghostalpha26. Video Game Thread is the same, the last message I can see is of ghostalpha. Hmmmmmm, why are ghostalpha's messages the last I can see?

STAR WARS V8 - A Final Attempt (Released)
Time

Before starting this transfer I was afraid of three things:

- dotcrawl

- haloing/ghosting

- rainbowing

As far as I can see dotcrawl won't be a problem. The haloing/ghosting is solved for the most part by adjusting the sharpness settings of my capture card. The only thing that bothers me a bit is some rainbowing. I tried the "derainbow" script and it solves the rainbowing a bit but I was wondering if there is anything that's better.

Few updates.

I tested capturing in huffyuv and it workes ok now and saves a lot of space.

I upped the contrast and saturation in my capture card settings and I have to say it looks much better now. The black of space is, well, black and the colors are better.

I also noticed rainbowing (which is a bit more visible with higher saturation I think). I'm not sure what and if I can do anything about it (except for a few avisynth filters that I don't want to use). I don't know, maybe it's on the LDs itself.

I tried 2 different voltage convertors. They turned out to be chinese crap. fffffff is going to send me a quality convertor from the States.

I'll buy a BNC cable and BNC to RCA plug to reduce haloing.

Darth Mallwalker, I guess the back of your player looks like this?

Tomorrow I'm going to France for 10 days and I won't be here during that time.

Well, I'll give it a try. Does the length of the cable matter? I mean, would I see any difference in image quality if I use a 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 meter cable? Wasn't BNC made to be a good signal over long distances?

Also, left of the EXT SYNC connectors on the back of my player is this 75Ω on/off switch. Any idea what it's for?

Broadcast/professional equipment uses BNC connections for video cabling, to minimise signal degradation from back-reflection caused by impedance mismatch. The X0 team actually modified their PDI Deluxe capture card to swap the RCA with a BNC connector.

Arnie, in those clips you posted, did you crop then add the black bars back in? I'm asking because the black level of the bars is pure black, whereas the black in the actual video is elevated a fair bit higher. There is no clipping of the whites - in fact, I would recommend increasing the contrast.

Yes, I cropped the black bars and added new ones (to get rid of the subtitles).

Do you mean increasing the contrast of the capture card or avisynth?

Regarding haloing, do you suppose a cable impedance mismatch could be affecting it?

Didn't you say you're using a BNC/RCA adaptor? Would that be an RCA cable with BNC adaptor on the LD end?

I wonder if you'd get any different results using a true 75-Ohm BNC cable with the adaptor on the PC end?

Can you explain how that can possibly make any difference?

Arnie.d,

Im not a big advocate of the whole "the cable makes all the difference" that is so prevalent in the Audiophile community. But in this case it really does. At higher frequencies, cables stop acting like "wires" and more like "waveguides". So if you have some high frequency component of the signal that is (due to impedance mismatch like DM said) bouncing back and fourth between the mismatched impedance ends, you will set up standing waves and have the same signal arriving multiple times.

Give it a shot. Can't hurt right? Might even want to clean off some of the corrosion on the jack with a metal polish of some sort.

OK, so a cable like this and a plug like this?

Yes, I'll remove the corrosion.
