Nice looking screenshots Arnie. I have to ask if you've done something the colour though, as it looks very muted compared to other versions of the Special Collection. Your caps look closer to the GOUT colourwise.

Other than that, great to see more examples of the Japanese set, keep up the good work!

I haven't done anything to the color. But these are just raw caps. When I encode it for dvd with CCE SP I convert it to RGB and 0-255 colorspace. The resulting mpeg file has a greater range. The space will be black, the whites will be white and the color is a bit more distinct.

A comb filter removes the rainbowing.

No, a comb filter separates the luminance (y) and chrominance (c) elements of a composite video signal.

Since video is stored on laserdisc in analogue composite form, there must be a comb filter somewhere in the chain.

A poor comb filter will lead to dot crawl and "rainbows" (aka cross-colour effects). A good quality comb filter will reduce the appearance of these effects.

Since the player the OP used does not (I think) have an s-video output, he would have hooked it up with a composite video cable, therefore the (cheap?) comb filter in the capture card will be used.

If the card has an s-video input, then a potential improvement could be obtained by connecting the LD player to the DVD recorder with a composite cable, the the DVD recorder to the capture card with an s-video cable. This uses the comb filter inside the DVD recorder, which is likely to give higher quality results.

Whoops...  I knew that.

There's a lot of ghosting/haloing in those caps- is that from the LDs themselves or is something in the script causing it?

It's not on the LDs themselves. It happens when the sharpness level of the capture device is too high.

Is there anything I can do to get around the sharpness problem or should i look for a new capture card lol?

The only thing I can think of is a capture card that allows you to change the sharpness settings. I'll post a screenshot from my capture later for comparison.

Since you used dehalo, are the ghosting effects much worse in the raw capture?

Oh, that's a pitty you can't set the sharpness to negative values.

I use virtualdubMpeg, but I think it can be done with any version of virtualdub. You have to go to video > framerate. At the bottom you can select the manual IVTC. But IVTCing the special collection is a lot of work. The pulldown changes from time to time so the settings have to be adjusted for specific pieces of video. Personally I just processed every side 5 times (offset 0 through 4) and I cut and pasted the correct IVTCed pieces together.

What a coincidence, I captured the same LD (and also Star Wars and Empire). But I think your sharpness settings on your capture device are set too high (I've had the same problem but Moth3r showed me the way). If you look at the first picture you clearly see ghosting effects around Luke. Setting the sharpness lower will solve this problem. Ofcourse the image will look a little bit softer but that's just what it looks like. If the sharpness is set too high you only get "fake" detail and ghosting effects. Did you try different settings? Here is a useful thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Setting-sharpness-for-analogue-capture/topic/9566/

What capture device did you use?

Did you try the derainbow before the inverse telecine step? I think derainbowing works better before inverse telecine.

I also tried derainbowing but I noticed I got some black and white frames just before a scene change. Did you have the same problem?

For IVTC I used virtualdub in manual mode.

The fact that Microsoft keeps changing the basic support of their OSs each year is dirty. If they had any competition with OSs that were capable of running programs with the same source code, the situation would be very different. Instead we'd get an OS that was updated each year but didn't lose support so quickly, and was given more interface improvements over the course of it's life.

Instead, Windows 2000, XP, Vista, are all very similar in their source codes. The major differences are external and shouldn't require us to upgrade or risk "support" and availability of the versions we like.

Well, this is capitalism, the big company creating a product people have to keep buying. Microsoft has a monopoly position and it is using it. This is how the rich get filthy rich, by playing it dirty.

GOUT image stabilization - Released

what do you mean?

Both the Ntsc and pal releases of the gout were taken from a 480i D2 master tape.

Laserdiiscs are interlaced.

Just becuase they flagged the dvd as fake progressive does not make it a progressive scan transfer.

Any more than a fake resizing to anamorphic would make it an anamorphic  release.

Both the PAL and NTSC GOUT dvds are progressive. The PAL version is not interlaced. The NTSC version has pulldown flags so the dvd player plays the 23.976 fps progressive mpeg2 stream at 29.97 fps . There is no such thing as fake progressive flags.

Blu-ray prices not coming down

You do realize that the TOP side of a DVD is far more prone to damage than the bottom side.  A scratch that damages the top side will usually damage the data layer, while a scratch on the bottom side can usually simply be buffed out.  The data layer is only protected on the top side by the label, on the bottom side it is protected by a much thicker piece of polycarbonate.

I think the data layer usually is between 2 layers of polycarbonate. I've never had problems with scratches on the label side, it will hardly ever reach the data layer. A scratch on the read side of the disc doesn't need to reach the data layer to make it unreadable.

Something that has always bothered me about Blu-ray from day one, the cases. I find them very unattractive, being bright blue just doesn't do it for me. Anybody else feel this way?

PS3 cases being clear plastic is a large improvement, but the blue of the blu-ray discs really distracts from the artwork. I almost enjoy my DVD collection just as much for their nice shiny cases look as I do for their watch ability. I don't think I could ever feel that way for a blu-ray title.

I have always felt the same way about Xbox cases vs. PS2 cases, the green case looks fine enough for some games with lots of green in the label, like Halo, but for other games it looks like crap. PS2 games on the other hand, with their dark blue/black cases and that sleek black steak across the top doesn't conflict with any box art.

Take Half-Life 2 for Xbox or the Orange Box for 360 for example, both contain large amounts of orange on the cover art, contrasted with the green case, it just looks awful. Look at their PC counterparts with black cases, 100% improvement.

Green and blue just are not nutrual enough colors, I know they want to be unique, but it just doesn't look good. Or am I the only one who feel this way?

I think it is time for me to go to bed, I am starting to rant about ridiculous things.

I don't like the cases either. I only like the standard black amaray dvd cases.

Why did you buy the PDI card when you already had a capture card with the later 7135 chipset?

Shouldn't the later and presumably more advanced chipset be better for capturing?

Because the 7135 card also has a tuner (which can introduce noise). With the PDI I can more accurately set the sharpness settings, etc. It's a better card although the chipset is older.

I'm still working on this. I bought a PDI deluxe card for capturing. Problem is, the video and audio is out of sync (it was in perfect sync with my other capture card so I don't like this at all). But the sync seems to be constant so it should be pretty easy to fix, if you know what the delay is. I have a pretty good idea what the delay is by now but I would like a second (or third+) opinion. So I uploaded a fragment of Leia talking to Darth Vader (link below). It's a seperate mpeg2 stream and a wave file so pretty easy to load in virtualdub mpeg and to play around with the audio delay. Can anyone help find out the audio delay?

 http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GRCG9AXS

-300ms, but that delay could drift over a much longer video,

you can't tell with this one... (it could be -270ms or -350ms)..

 http://rapidshare.com/files/148132350/x2-300ms.avi.html

later

Thanks for the help. I though it was something like -225 to -250.

Why was the '04 DVD set such a botched release?

kenkraly2007 said:Ok let me make myself clear I've watch the 2004 dvds and I see other than the missed up sound nothing wrong with them in terms of colors on the dvds.. You people that complan about the colors need your eyes check or something.

You need your fucking brain checked you dumb fuck. Have you seen the OOT? Have you compared it to the 2004 edition? The 2004 edition is too dark, the blacks are crushed, detail is lost. Ep. IV is sometimes too pink, sometimes, too blue. Ep. V is too blue. Does the snow look white to you? The lightsabers are terrible. In Ep. VI they mostly are lacking their white core. In Ep. IV the lightsabers should be the same color blue, check this link and compare the screenshots: http://www.dvdcc.com/articles.php?swdvdchanges1_09_12_04
Do those colors look good to you? Who needs his eyes checked?

Don't come to OT.com and tell us we should be happy with the 2004 edition of the star wars trilogy. There is soo much wrong with it, it is unwatchable for a true star wars fan. Go fuck yourself!!! At least go play somewhere else talking like a retard.
